I ordered the huge thick pizza the other night and was a little disappointed. Thick pizzas have cooking problems with cooking the insides enough before the top burns. It was really undercooked in the middle. I would say the green peppers were raw and never got hot. I was hungry and ate it. The next day I cooked the leftovers in the oven for a bit to cook the insides. It was good then. If they worked on cook times and made sure they were done it would be better. 2-3 times they have been like that. Nice people, thinner pies were good. read more

Although this location is fairly close to my house, this was only my second visit to an Al's. Interior was nicely decorated, tables were clean and we were seated quickly. Our Server was lovely and thankfully wasn't annoyed at our being on the phone while at the table (horribly rude behavior, but we were sorting out an issue with our alarm company). We were waiting for our entrees when a car of excited tweens arrived and went into the kitchen (owner/employee kids?) and proceeded to shout, laugh and crash about, slightly impacting the low-key, intimate mood they strive for with the decor, lighting and overall ambience. We skipped starters (neither of us were ravenous) and The Hublet ordered a $9.99 Spaghetti with meat sauce and I ordered a $19.99 medium Meat Pizza (Hublet wanted some pizza, so asked me to order a larger size). He received garlic bread and a huge salad before his spaghetti arrived, so we shared the garlic bread which was strongly dusted with garlic and delicious. Once his pasta arrived he tucked in without complaint and said it was good. The portion size was fairly decent as well. Although my pizza was nicely loaded with toppings and overall was tasty, the thin crust bottom was scorched black. Thankfully the burn wasn't too deep and we wolfed down half the pizza and got a To Go box, with everything still edible when we heated it up the next day. I'm definitely going to revisit Al's at some point in the near future as I enjoyed my first visit but wasn't blown away and want to give it another shot. read more

Got a calzone delivered to my hotel from the Jax local pizza chain Al's. I was really surprised by how good it was. The calzone was the best I have had since I lived in North Carolina of all places that had great Italian food. The difference here is the inclusion of delicious ricotta cheese to the great eggplant filling. Dont know about the pizza but the calzone is legit. read more

I stopped there on a Friday night with my husband. We ordered a Deluxe pizza and it was really good! The crust is incredibly good and I think one of the best in the Jax area. My sister and I had the 'Al's mussels in the shells', our own 10" pizzas and molten chocolate cake. The mussels took some time to come out but the staff definitely made up for the wait! I had the ALL MEAT Calzone and it was perfect. This little flavor sack was filled will all the proteins I could imagine and dripping with multiple cheeses. Normally I can't finish meals this size in one sitting, but when my waitress asked if I wanted a box I sent her away knowing there's no way I wasn't enjoying this bad boy while it was fresh. Best. I've always been a fan of Al's. Sometimes it can be dicey, but usually they're spot on. This location is a little hard to get to depending on which direction you're coming from. I arrived early, but since they weren't busy I was able to grab a booth in the bar and hang out until she got there. They're specialty pizzas are the way to go. Some of the flavor combos may seem a little weird, but they're definitely worth trying at least once. Maybe it's just me, but this location looks a lot bigger on the outside than it actually is. I quickly fell in love with Al's pizza - it was literally love at first slice, well, pie...because I ate almost the entire thing. Whenever I go into the restaurant on Phillips Highway it's never too crowded and service is fast and friendly. I have noticed that the booths near the bar aren't usually as clean as the ones in the main dining area. I have found that there's been trash on the floor near or under the booth or they still need to clear and clean the tables. Have no fear, if you really desire to sit over on that side, you can always ask the staff to clean it and MOST of the time there's no attitude about it. When there is an attitude, I attribute it to them having a long day (I usually go in around 8 pm). One little surprise that I found to be delightful is the fact that they deliver!! On those lazy days, feel free to order Al's and enjoy from the comfort of your home or office. The one time that I ordered for delivery, the store manager was the person who brought my food. I thought that was impressive. There was an error on my bill where a coupon hadn't been reflected and when the manager got back to the store, he made sure to call me and let me know about the price adjustment that he made. How's that for professionalism? My only complaint is that the pizza isn't as hot and as fresh when it's delivered versus dining in. I think that's expected anywhere, though. Speaking of coupons, you can always find a few deals in the local MINT Magazine or Money Pages magazine. There's also a pretty super happy hour deal with beer for $2-$3 and $1 off wine. They even have pasta specials on certain days, and if you're anything like me, you'll be in pasta lover's heaven. It's the perfect way to unwind after work. The bottom line is if you want great pizza at an affordable price, go to Al's. read more

I went here for lunch take out today. The staff was super friendly and the restaurant was clean as far as I could tell. I ordered the fried chicken salad and their garlic and Parmesan cheese "pretzel", which is essentially just garlic bread twisted into a badly shaped pretzel. At home we use Tyson grilled chicken strips for cooking sometimes. They aren't that good and they use rib meat and dark meat. It's basically when we're too lazy to cook chicken. Al's seems to do the same thing for the chicken they label as "premium" and charge extra for on pizza. It's 100% pre-cooked chicken from a bag. Along with canned pineapple as a topping. And I'm pretty sure they used canned "roasted" red peppers. I didn't give just one star because I'm not a monster and this wasn't the worst thing I've ever had. But, it's just wrong. Went with a friend for dinner. We were immediately greeted with welcoming smiles. We decided to sit at the bar area. I have to say the service from this point fell to a pitiful & unbearable level. The bartenders' tone was abrupt as she requested our choice of beverage and without an immediate answer from my friend requested an immediate response without even offering a menu or suggestions. The food was pretty good thus the generous 2 stars. We had several appitizers and split them. Our presence was a hassle for our bartender thus our patronage is no longer needed. Very poor skill when it comes to handling to go orders. Ordered penne paste with Marinara and meatballs just for it to come with only meatballs, while ordering online I was presented with options and I chose what I wanted. Yet when I phone in I'm told I ordered wrong and it came how it was suppose to. Yet my food is wrong. Especially while I've worked in food before and continue to do so, the ticket said no marinara and the below said meatball and marinara. I understand confusion but to not even call to question? And then when I call to say my orders wrong I'm told I'm in the wrong? Probably some of the most unfavorable service I've ever experienced at any Al's pizza in Jacksonville. The food was great! The server... what server??!?! We had to ask her for all what is just standard with all larger parties (7 adults and 3 young adults). Things like extra napkins, drinks, silverware, service utensils, more drinks... all of which we had to ask for. Then the bud light that was tried to be passed off as a Blue Moon (come on). Then we had to prebus our table for the cake because once again, our server disappeared. She only had our table once the table of four left about 30min after we were there. I would not recommend this particular location to anyone. Would I recommend Al's pizza for pizza, yes. Just don't hold your breathe when it comes to the service. Worst pizza in Jacksonville and very disappointed. Mozzarella cheese tasted horrible, like fake cheese or cheese substitute. Sauce had no body or flavor. The only thing good was the pepperoni on top. I've enjoyed Al's for the past two Thursdays in a row because you just cannot simply beat their deals! Every Thursday is Thirsty Thursday and they offer $1 house wines & Yuenglings. Slices of pizza are only $1 after 8:00. This location is somewhat busy on Thursdays but I've been seated following less than a 20 min wait each time. Service can be spotty when they are busy but, once again, the inexpensive booze/food seems to help with patience. Last time I went, some girl friends & I shared the brushetta appetizer. The topping was simply delicious with fresh tomatoes, basil & feta. I had the greek salad for dinner and it was yummy as well. Are you in the mood for some pizza and are around the Southside area? I would highly recommend this place for the service that I received there. Their decor is semi basic. It isn't too upscale but not a dirty place. It is similar to a newer, modern hip location. When my date and I walked, the place seemed very clean and we were greeted by a friendly face. Now about that service! Our waitress named Adrian was very polite and not too hovering. She helped us with the menu and described each item on the menu that we pointed our interest in. Simply a helpful waitress. I know.. you may be thinking that this is what they are supposed to be doing. But no! My date that evening hadn't eaten all day and she started having a hypoglycemic attack!!! She noticed that my date was sweating, out of breathe, and looked fatigued. I was so busy on the pizza, I hadn't even noticed.... opps. She came over right away with a coke and helped out my date. Lucky, the waitress was a modern day super hero that evening for our basic pizza stop. Food wise, the pizza was decent. It was a level higher than fast food pizza that is for sure. I ordered the 10' Margherita pizza. It was cheesy with light olive oil on it. Half of the pizza seemed filling to me. One thing I realized about their pizza that it was still devious the next day in the microwave. Surprising, the crust was still crispy and non soggy. Random... but something that I don't see that much with re-heated pizza. I would recommend this place for the price. I will try more items on the menu for sure and update my review in the future. Just had a pretty strange experience ordering delivery from here. I ordered once via DoorDash and it was excellent, but decided to order directly through the restaurant this time and avoid paying DoorDash fees. After placing my order, I got a call back from the same guy who took my order and he told me I was out of their delivery range and they normally wouldn't deliver out of an 8 mile radius (I live 9.1 miles away from this location)., but they'd make a one time exception. I told him if it was such a big issue to cancel my order. He told me that wouldn't be necessary and that he'd deliver my food. Okay... Anyway, the driver eventually came and banged extremely loudly on my door. I opened the door and he reprimanded me about how he had to drive 40 minutes to my location and that I should never order delivery from this location again. Honestly, if this was such a major problem in the first place, they should have just canceled my order. I would have totally understood. I just really didn't appreciate being admonished at my front door by the delivery man. I'd rather give my money to a local business than a fast food pizza chain, but after this experience l, I definitely won't be ordering from here ever again, which is honestly a real shame because their food is so good. read more

I went there on a random visit and wondered if it was related to the same one I had visited in Riverside. My arrival during lunch was well received and I was promptly seated in the front. My server seemed ready, willing, and able to to answer my questions about the menu as I ordered a simple NY-style Personal Pizza and a Greek salad to match it. The salad came out first in an abundance of colors and the pizza followed with a interesting look to it that made it appetizing. Both were good in their serving and taste. While I was there, two female versions of Felix Unger (an Obsessive-Compulsive character from "The Odd Couple" with a cleaning fetish) came in and sat two tables away from me. As their luck would have it, they had a new waitress who was all smiles, but short on experience in dealing with demanding customers nobody needs. As I was leaving, I motioned to the manager to step in on the new waitress's behalf because I could see it was going that way before one of the crazy customers would likely scream or all of the other patrons would walk out. You can definitely find better priced pizza in town, but not much better tasting pizza. We love Al's meatballs, and sliced thin on a pizza they are especially good.
