So many people have told me about the great pizza.Unfortunately they didn't tell me about ordering bacon on a pizza which is my hubby's favorite topping and a standard at most places. I have very happy memories of going to Al's pizza with my parents and family friends when I was a kid in the 1970s. The place has hardly changed and is literally a time machine that took me back to that era. That nostalgia bubble burst upon placing our order with the rudest little blond cashier that treated us with complete indifference and disdain. All the while the staff is yukking it up with the regulars and shouting in unison "Thank You" to every other customer but us. So cringe and unwelcoming. We planned to dine in and were told our pizza would be ready in an hour. While we waited we heard the kitchen staff bickering with each other. So awkward. We have been going to Al's for many years but this last experience was poor - they overcooked all the pizzas and then said we should not expect it to come out differently because this is the way they always do it and they were rude when they brought out another smaller pizza - done right but tasted terrible - not going back. Friday night, pizza was great. Liked the thin crispy crust! The place was crowded and it took an hour and 15 minutes to get the pizza. That seemed long but they were extremely busy, it was very good, and they warned us of the wait precisely. I would say the only downside to Al's was how cramped it is and oddly set up. Tight booths, stairs down to get your own drinks, narrow walkways...an senior's nightmare, but I think that added to the nostalgic almost college day feels. So overall, a solid 4. Really excellent Chicago thin crust, maybe the best I've had. Only criticism is that the green peppers weren't cooked enough for my taste (we always get a mushroom and green pepper pizza). They also take credit cards now. Beer from the bar next door is affordable. Good range of draft options for a small neighborhood bar. Al's Pizza, Warrenville We do not usually order from here because of the cash only policy. Never have cash and it's an added step just to get pizza. (Someone said they now accept credit cards). Two weeks ago my son and his family came over and we ordered four pizzas. Everyone likes something a little different. I sent my husband and son as they loved that they could sit and talk while having a beer waiting for the pizza. Past pizza has been great. Only compared to Uncle Pete's in Naperville for us. So we ordered, the guys had time for one beer and the pizza was great. This past Friday my daughter and her family came over so again we decided to order from Al's. Four pizzas we ordered. My husband and son-in-law went to have a beer before they picked up the pizza. Sounded like fun. They brought the pizza home and the 10" pepperoni pizza was black on the crust and across the top. The 12" cheese only pizza was very dark brown crust and brown to black top. Both pizzas were inedible. The 16" cheese and sausage pizza was very brown questionable if you could eat it. The 14" sausage, mushroom, black olive pizza was at the point where it was almost too done. Family's over, kids need to eat, it's been an hour since we ordered. What to do. I called and spoke with a girl and she asked "did you ask for well done?" No! She handed the phone to another girl who asked what's the color of the crust? One is black with a little dark brown. One is a little black with very dark brown, one is dark brown and one is medium brown. She hands the phone to the manager who says"What do you want me to do about it?" I said at least remake the pepperoni and cheese pizzas. He said ok but it would be 30 minutes. I said ok. Then I got off the phone and the little kids were hungry. It would be after 7:00 by the time they got something to eat. I called back and said just refund my money. It's too late to wait for the pizza to be remade, come get them and bring it home. He said he could only give me a credit of $10. TEN DOLLARS for more than $80 of pizza. Of course no recourse as it's a cash operation. We threw out all four pizzas. I think this was terrible and won't be back. The 4 pizzas that cost $80.00 were inedible. The manager and the two staff before him were totally rude. We had a snotty little blonde with an attitude... We ordered from a nice young man and tipped as we always do... It really doesn't get any better than this if we're talking Chicagoland tavern pizza. Walk in, order your pizza and then head over to Towne Tap for some beer while you wait. Al's is nestled in a quiet part of Warrenville (honestly all is Warrenville is pretty much quiet so to speak) and close to the expressway as well. This pizza is the real deal, flavors are phenomenal and sitting in this blue collar bar among Warrenville locals, enjoying a cold beer brings on a sort of nostalgic feeling. I give the 5 stars solely on the pizza alone as I came here for a fulfilling meal, not to be overly pampered by customer service (I've yet to have had any experience here that I would consider bad customer service). I highly recommend if it's your first time to eat in Towne Tap and enjoy a cold one. You want a true authentic and fresh taste of this as opposed to having it made, waiting for you to pick it up, driving back home and then finally opening it up. There's a lot of pizza places in the suburbs that are great, a handful I give a rating over 8.0, but Al's Pizza is one of those rare ones that gets a pizza rating over 9.0, more likely closer to 9.4, it's that good. Double check their hours as there's a section of the early afternoon they're closed, and CASH ONLY, but there is an atm located next door at the bar. We have happily returned to Al's for years but, on our visit last week, we were really disappointed. We were not served the same tavern-style we had come to love and had been served at for years Al's. The crust was different (slightly lifted on the edges and flavorless), the bacon was different (thin and slightly rubbery - not the smoky bacon we had came to love), and it lacked cheese. It is no longer a phenomenal pizza; it is now just a standard pizza. We also noticed that most of the staff - in both the pizzeria and bar - had changed. Did they change hands - possibly on both sides? Why mess with the quality of what was once such an amazing pizza? Are they sacrificing quality to cut costs? Should be five stars for the taste & quality, but the woman that runs this place, has the be the nastiest/most unfriendly owner ever. Came here after a recent review that was raving about the pizza. Went into the bar Side(they're independently owned but connected), got a drink then went and order the pizza. Pizza came about an hour in, pizza was amazing. Fiancé and I only ate a couple pieces and went back to ask for a box. Lynn(I believe the owner) asked what we needed, asked for a box for our pizza. She gave a dirty look then flipped the pizza into a box and said "here you go !". We took our pizza & left. Never seen such a nasty owner treat ever customer like shit. I received a 20-dollar gift card from a friend for Al's Pizza last November when I worked on an office near Al's. We ordered from Al's ALL THE TIME. The gift card was valid for one year (handwritten). Due to COVID and not going into my office anymore, I hadn't had the chance to use the gift card. Well, I realized today that the gift card expired yesterday, so I figured I would try to order something today to use it before more time expired and I would make a special trip up to Warrenville to get the pizza. I called to explain the situation and was told flat-out "No" regarding whether they would honor the gift card. Keep in mind this wasn't a coupon or something. It was a gift card. A friend of mine spent their own money to purchase it. I have spent thousands of dollars at Al's over the years. Due to COVID, it was difficult to order from there since we don't live close by. And despite all of this, they wouldn't honor a 1-day expired 20-dollar gift card. I like their pizza, but that's some Bush League stuff right there. It's not about the money - it's the principle. The place was pretty raucous, with some work parties dominating the space and coming in and out from the attached bar (Towne Tap). At least no running kids thanks to all the warning signs. We ordered a pepperoni and mushroom thin crust pizza; the counter guy balked a bit when i requested it pie cut, saying there were "no guarantees" (?)...but it did come as requested. It came absolutely loaded with toppings, a definite benefit. The wait was long. This is a small operation, but it took every second of the 45 minutes they estimated and then some. So if you're in a hurry...don't be. Don't know if you have to be a regular to earn the thanks of the crew (which we heard with regularity throughout the meal), but we got brushed aside for the next person after paying. Hmm. We had a potluck at work & everyone bought or cooked food. Me being lazy I ordered pizzas! I ordered 1 small sausage/mushroom, 1 16in cheese, 1 16in sausage. My team loved it. They'd eaten it before so they suggested I order from here. My sausage/mushroom was good. The cheese was a little too thick for me. Sausage & mushrooms were tasty. The crust & sauce were good too. I enjoyed it. But I think the pizza was more of a 3.5 to me. Service is the reason for the 4 stars. I called at 930am to open & they were there taking orders, they don't open until 11. He said I could pick up at 1120. I got there at 1130 the food was READY!!!! They were friendly during pick up too. SERVICE IS DEFINITELY A 5. That's how I came up with 4 stars.
