This is such a cute place right on Main Street with indoor and outdoor seating. We were a little nervous after speaking with the hostess as she wasn't very friendly and almost rude. She did warm up when we were leaving though. The waiting area is small but luckily we weren't there for long. We waited about 10-15 minutes for a table and our server greeted us immediately. He was super friendly and helpful. We ordered the sauerkraut balls, the pork cutlet with capers and the bacon wrapped meatloaf. The sauerkraut was good but the mustard sauce made it that much better. You definitely have to be a lover of sauerkraut though, my husband didn't love them. The cutlet with capers was freaking amazing! Perfectly crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside. I wanted more capers but honestly there's never enough on anything in my opinion. The meatloaf with gravy hit the spot for me. I love meatloaf! The spaetzle didn't really taste like anything but was a great side with the gravy mixed in. I love vegetables so much and the broccolini was cooked to perfection. I really appreciated that! The place was pretty packed but we seemed to be seated fairly quick. Excellent service and the food came out FAST! We will definitely be back.

We showed up around 1:15 p.m. on a Saturday, just in time for the live German band -- and wow, they were loud. Let's just say the singer gave "enthusiastic karaoke energy," not "Oktoberfest headliner." The veggies were solid beer snacks, and the beer itself? No notes -- just order it and be happy. The schnitzel was okay, but the gravy tasted suspiciously like it took a shortcut through the canned goods aisle. Spaetzle did its job, and the red cabbage (Rotkohl) was the star of the plate. Then there was the water... let's just say if you enjoy a strong hint of swimming pool, you'll love it. At this point, I realized I've become both a water and music snob -- and I'm oddly fine with that.

Great restaurant "off the strip" that is totally worth the extra walk to avoid the crowds and get imho better fare than what most other places are serving, and prices are great. Went on a Saturday early afternoon for lunch and it was very quiet inside; we were sat immediately and our servers were all great. Their menu looks similar to most other places but their food was much better than I've had at other restaurants in the area. Portions were large - we took home leftovers and enjoyed them later. We sat inside where you can check out the glass-covered well in the center of the building, but they have a patio with music outside if the weather isn't too hot.

We had such a great experience at Altdorf Biergarten! The food, atmosphere, and service all hit the mark. I ordered the Jägerschnitzel, and it was absolutely delicious--crispy, flavorful, and comforting. I do wish I could have subbed out the side for fries, but the default option was still very tasty. My mother-in-law had the Greek salad and loved it. It was generously topped and super fresh--definitely not your average side salad. My husband went with the Reuben, and he swears it's the best in Fredericksburg. High praise coming from him! We couldn't resist trying dessert, and I'm so glad we didn't. I had the apple strudel, which completely blew me away. The homemade ice cream and caramel drizzle took it to the next level--truly a standout dish. My husband had a rich chocolate cake, and it was equally indulgent. The atmosphere is another major plus. The outdoor patio is shaded and beautifully done--it was so nice to enjoy our meal outside without baking in the Texas sun. Don't miss the hand-dug well inside either. It's a cool historical touch that makes this place feel like a true Fredericksburg landmark. We'll definitely be back!

Went with some ladies on a girls trip up to Fredericksburg! Needed some food and loved the Ruben sandwich with fries. The bread was so fresh and paired well with the filling. Cute restaurant, the inside has plenty of seating, air conditioning, and some windows for people watching outside. Our waiter was nice and super responsive to changes for food when another meal came out incorrect, he had it fixed quickly. Will need to return when back in town.

Loved the food! Everything we had was delicious. We ordered the pretzel appetizer and it was 3 loaves of pretzel bread. Not the traditional shape but they were delicious and served warm. Also beer cheese and grain mustard (slightly sweet). Very tasty! I had the Haus Salat- mixed greens, goat cheese, golden beets, pickled onion and candied pecans. And a mustard vinaigrette. Overall I liked it! The mixed greens were alright. I would've liked more of the goat cheese and vinaigrette. The salad was a little dry and I wasn't given any extra salad dressing on the plate. It was served already with vinaigrette on it. I also had the Weinerschnitzel - pickled onion, capers, lemon, with sides rotkohl (warm pickled red cabbage) and spatzle (I call it German pasta). Everything on the plate was delicious! I ate it all! Another in the party got The 'Frankfurt'. It's a half pound of sausage! It's the width of the plate. It was way bigger than expected! Tasty. The pretzel bread it came with was a little soggy from all the sauerkraut on top (and then drizzled with mustard). And a side of fries. Overall a good plate. Bang for your buck! Someone else ordered the chicken 'pikant'. A sandwich, with a grilled chicken with cayenne on it. They claim it wasn't spicy but I don't know. Served in a brioche bun and fries as a side. They finished their plate. The inside entrance features a natural well that goes at least 25 feet deep. Impressive! The restrooms are far away from the restaurant which is great - keeps away any odors, but...it's far (haha). The restaurant does not take reservations. It's first come first serve. The staff were very nice! We would return for sure. And the desserts sounded lovely!

The food came out quick and the best thing we had was the pretzel and chicken salad. The presentation was pretty.

This is the second time I've been to Fredericksburg. I looked up restaurants and Altdorf Biergarten was my choice. I'm not much of a German food fan but the hockbraten caught my eye, which was tasty bacon wrapped meatloaf.

Altdorf Biergarten is what happens when restraint, competence, and taste are allowed to coexist without apology. The food is excellent--properly executed, structurally sound, and refreshingly uninterested in novelty for novelty's sake. Each dish arrives as intended, which already places it well above much of the contemporary dining landscape. The beer selection is unapologetically German and thoughtfully curated, clearly assembled for people who understand that tradition is not a flaw in need of correction. The ambiance is immaculate: authentic without cosplay, warm without affectation. It feels lived-in rather than staged, as if comfort and coherence were priorities rather than marketing angles. Service is attentive, calm, and mercifully non-performative. No hovering, no scripts--just someone quietly ensuring that nothing detracts from the experience. More broadly, it serves as a reminder that appreciating a culture requires intellectual maturity: the ability to acknowledge historical atrocities while still recognizing the depth, discipline, and humanity embedded in its food, craft, and social rituals. Reducing an entire civilization to its worst chapter is lazy thinking. Altdorf manages to honor culture without evasion or nostalgia.

One of the best German food and beer we had in TX! We came from Dallas to visit Fredericksburg and learned about how the small town had German settlers and infused with the culture. We came here for the wine but went back also being a fan of German beer. Love the vibe with live music and definitely beer!

Nice spot in Fredericksburg for traditional Bavarian fare. We visited with a large group and shared a variety of plates. We tried the pretzel and sauerkraut ball appetizers, the broccoli cheddar soup of the day, and the wurst plate, Jagerschnitzel, and Bavarian goulash entrees. Everyone enjoyed their meals, and we found the sauerkraut balls and pretzel especially tasty. It was the perfect day to sit on their patio, which is covered by fabric tarps, and the service was quick and friendly. This is a great spot if you are looking for traditional German food while in Fredericksburg.

The service and the ambiance of this place definitely win over the food I got...BUT, my friends really enjoyed their food and they got more traditional German food than I did (just got a club sandwich for lunch) so this review is really based of the vibes and service. They had live music playing which was a nice touch and were able to seat our large group outside with no reservation on a Saturday. Our waiters were very attentive!

Delicious and staff was attentive. Dog friendly place and recommend!

What are they doing in terms of covid precaution and procedure?

As of 3/26/22, no more COVID precautions. Masks are optional. No social distancing.

Any gluten free alcoholic beverages and food available?

The menu has clearly marked gluten free food. I drank water as I am not able to drink alcohol so I can't answer that. I did not have any kind of reaction to the gluten free food. I'm gluten sensitive but not celiac.

With the new menu - do they still have the wonderful Hot and Sour potatoes?

Alstadt Peach Radler - Top of the list of what I personally enjoyed at the Auslander. This beer was a light, crisp, and refreshing beer with a hint of peach flavor. Definitely something to enjoy on a hot day. This was my happy place drink. Beer Battered Mushrooms - The shrooms here were better than most other German establishments I've dined at. Reasonably sized mushrooms with a non overly heavy batter. Portions were bigger than expected and would readily satisfy a group of four. Jägerschnitzel - A fair sized slab of fried pork goodness smothered in a red wine mushroom gravy. The pork loin was a good thickness and not an overly pounded thin cutlet. Breading was good, but didn't stick much to the protein. Gravy was just okay in my opinion and had a hint of sourness to it for some reason. Not a terrible entree but wasn't mind blowing either. Currywurst - The bratwurst with this meal was a solid portion of meat that was full of porky goodness. Curry ketchup had the spice flavoring to it, but wasn't particularly strong. It was a fair entree, nothing mind blowing, but still a good comfort dish. Sides - All the entrees came with a choice of two sides. Fries were just fries... good, but nothing special. Mashed potatoes tasted like the usual suspect, mashed potatoes. Potato salad was properly cooked and prepared with some simple vinegary and cream flavors. Red cabbage tasted like vinegared red cabbage. All in all, the sides were just okay. Everything was for the most part clear cut of what was good and just okay. In that terms, there seemed to be a strange and wildly large chasm between what was okay and good in terms of the food. I was satisfied at the end of the meal, but at the same time not unhappy nor super happy with my meal. I was just... satisfied/okay. Food felt a bit overpriced for what we received, otherwise this establishment felt more like a one-and-done type of place.

It's great the way it is, and trying to make it fancy doesn't make it better. One of us had the schnitzel au gratin, which seemed more to be like a chicken Parmesan. I had the duck schnitzel. I would say they were just both OK. The fried potatoes that came with the au gratin schnitzel were left largely untouched on my companion's plate. There wasn't much flavor to my red cabbage, and my spaetzel seemed to be more like a modern day risotto. The brewery was the first place I ever had a scotch egg, my dad would get a small beer flight, maybe we'd get a brat, he made it fun. I'm pretty sure it had just opened back then. We got into town, checked in at the Trueheart Hotel, and immediately walked to the brewery because I was so excited. I probably went in to this with the unrealistic expectation that it would be the same as when I was a kid. It had a great start. The hostess was nice, and our server was, too. I wish we had gotten to sit in the back room with the long tables, We started with the beer flight and a scotch egg. The beer flight was okay. I was expecting really good German beers, mind-blowing, but these were just fine. A pale ale, an IPA, a flat porter were on the list, just not a memorable selection, although the red ale was good. The flight was a good price, though. For our appetizer, I wasn't expecting such a small scotch egg for $9. I mean, it was really small. I've been to several places around my area for scotch eggs, and they're usually $11-12 for two and they're properly sized. But we're on vacation and I wanted nostalgia so fine. It was delicious, and the creole mustard the scotch egg comes with was divine. More on that later. For our meals we tried both schnitzels. I was disappointed they don't have spaetzle, I'm pretty sure they used to. My boyfriend had the schinken and I had the jager. I don't like ham but his was infinitely better because of the gravy. The gravy on the jager schnitzel I got was heavy with some seasoning, maybe sage. It's all I could taste, and I couldn't just push the gravy off because my pork was fried to death. I barely ate any of mine. The sides we got (you get two per plate) were German potato salad, fries, onion rings, and vegetable medley. The fries and onion rings were great, especially when dipping in the creole mustard we saved from the scotch egg. The German potato salad is supposed to be sweet and sour and my boyfriend usually likes it, but this was way sweet, he wasn't a fan. The vegetable medley was good, but seemed really out of place as a side, normally with schnitzel you'd expect green beans or a salad or something, we got broccoli and squash. They did have a side salad, but it was $5. Not sure why a side salad couldn't just replace the two sides for no upcharge. I will say the rolls were awesome. At the end our server let us sit and hang out for a few minutes, he didn't rush us. We asked if they sell the creole mustard in bottles but they don't, so he said we could pay $5 for a togo container of it. We got probably a cup, so I was fine with that, I really loved it that much. We paid, I noticed he charged us $5 for tarter sauce that we didn't have, figured it was the only way to ring up the mustard. We left with our prized creole mustard. Cut to this weekend when we opened it to make a sandwich, and what we actually got was tarter sauce, so somewhere along the way he'd forgotten what we asked for. We live 200 miles from Fredericksburg, there's no fixing that, but maybe that's on me because I should have checked it. They really should sell bottles of that mustard, it's very good. Overall, it just wasn't the experience I was expecting. It's not the same, it's been over 30 years so I totally understand, and I did try to be fair with my critique. It wasn't great, it was just okay.

Since there are no business owner responses, the problems could be persisting. However, we've enjoyed our time here in the past so we thought we'd try it again. We got here at 5 pm on a Thursday and the place was mostly empty. That usually translates into better service and likely a better prepared meal as well. Sure enough, this theory was correct. We had two craft beers on the table within three minutes followed by Ruben fritters five minutes after that. The menu here is pretty simple with the expected German twist to it. We just stuck to a salad and burger. The salad was fresh and good, but the burger was pretty average and you have to add your own mayo and mustard. Even by adding cheese and mushrooms it still fell within the three star range and the fries were just OK. The beers were correct to style, but the hoppier beers were slightly tame. It's pretty much three stars overall, but the service was great so 31/2*. I'd still come back and try something else off the menu before the weekend and before 6.

We also got some chili cheese fries. The chili is good , but for some reason it just didn't go with these thinner cut fries. Would get either the chili or the fries again ... just not the chili on the fries. Friendly counter service and a laid back vibe. Nice patio area with room to spread out.

Normally I get the Diablo burger- Ghost Pepper Cheese, Cayenne Pepper, Chipotle Sauce, Lettuce, Tomatoes, & Fresh Onions It is the BOMB! Seriously, flavor town. I love spice, this gets your nose a little runny and your eyes a bit watery. Perfect for that first date, ladies ;) The Dino burger is perfect when I just want a classic. Seasoned fries are the way to go. Dip them in mayo if you know what's up. Yes, you need napkins. Yes, you need to wash your hands aggressively, especially if you have nails, after chowing down. Yes, you will be full after this dynamite combo. Service is great, always friendly. They have a small bar inside and plenty of tables indoors and out. My only qualm is that they ever close... They have live music and lovely big trees to sit underneath.
