It wasn't too busy today for lunch but the service was very slow. There was no wait when we arrived around 1:00. I ordered the Swiss burger. The burger was big, good and juicy with a lot of cheese and mushrooms. I liked the fries too, they had a little crunch to them. The restaurant is really nice inside and there is a nice patio with a tv that we didn't get to use today because it was a little windy. Solid, kinda touristy spot to check "German Biergarten" off your list when you come to Fredericksburg. We came early (~5:30ish) on a Saturday and only had to wait 15 minutes for our table (were able to grab a drink at the bar while we waited), but we saw people who came later have to wait over an hour. Overall the food was decent - we shared some bratwursts, schnitzel, and spaetzle, the staples. It wasn't the best German food I've ever had but it satisfies the craving. Their frozen sangria/margarita swirl is delicious and a great alternative if you don't want beer! We stopped in to eat. Got seated fast. They have many beers. We ordered a German Lager in 16 ounce mugs. Next we ordered a platter of fried mushrooms. They were the size of golf balls! We dug in. This is the best German food I have ever had. The ambiance is so cute! White walls and rich wood. Seating area outside with music and small bar. The inside has multiple mini rooms with private seating. It was just what we needed for a large family visiting from multiple destinations. The wait wasn't too long despite a ton of tourists. Decided to check this place out Wednesday morning! There was not a wait at all for outside seating and we were lucky enough to get seated next to a fan. We brought our dog and she was provided a water bowl. Our waiter was amazing, very attentive and nice and checked up on us frequently. I always like to start off giving a report about what an establishment does during the pandemic. I'm not a germ phobic, but some people have concerns nowadays. So, if you're looking for a place that adheres to the recommendations during the pandemic then you don't want to eat at Altdorf Biergarten. The only employee that was wearing a mask was the bust boy. We saw no other employee wearing a mask and/or gloves. The restaurant wasn't busy so we were seated in small room with no other diners. For whatever reason, the host started to seat another couple in the same small room with us even though the next room over was wide open with no diners. The couple asked to sit in the other room which was granted. That pretty much sums up the restaurant's concerns about the pandemic. Now for the main review. My wife and I both order different schnitzel dishes with different sides. Both of our schnitzel dishes had zero flavor. The meat was very dry. Even the gravy on my dish was tasteless and watered down. We both love spaetzle but it too had no flavor. My sauerkraut was pretty good, but my wife's red cabbage was way too sweet. Our waitress started out doing everything right then she was gone for long periods. We could hear her laughing and talking to other employees where they like to gather in a hallway towards the kitchen. Another employee had brought out our food and picked up our dirty dishes. It took a long time to get our check and they weren't busy on a Wednesday evening. I'm really not sure why this place gets such good reviews. I guess the beer they offer make people return. I'm struggling to put my feelings about Altdorf as it is now compared to what it used to be. You young-uns won't get this, but 40 and up peeps, think about 80s actress Jennifer Grey from Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Dirty Dancing. She got a nose job in the 90s and, while by some folks' reckoning, her new nose looked better, career-wise, being more generically "beautiful" by some artificial standard made her less distinctive and unique. Her career afterwards was never the same. Well, in my opinion, the "improvements" at Altdorf make it feel like a place you'd find in Addison or downtown Austin. More glitz but less soul. Frankly, I don't think the remodel did them any favors. Don't get me wrong, the food is fine, though not stellar. But the overall vibe just falls flat to me somehow. Maybe Texas is ok with one less gravel-covered patio with rustic furniture and country music, but I'm not sure we needed something that looks like the pool deck at an Embassy Suites playing weird instrumental techno-pop either. Or maybe I'm just a grumpy old man who is nostalgic for what this place used to be. Either way, I think I'll stick to other choices next time I'm unwinding in the Hill Country. read more

For a second visit to this establishment, I'd choose Springtime. And, I'd be more inclined to dine outside with a group; or as a couple. Those are my subjective thoughts. We had a great dinner here. The only reason I don't give it five stars was the service. Our waiter didn't come back much after we ordered our food. Someone else dropped off most of the dishes and someone I believe was a manager often cleaned the dirty plates off the table and offered to get us anything else, so we weren't forgotten about. I started with a cup of the soup of the day, which was the best cream of mushroom soup I've ever had. Then we shared some of the salad entrees as appetizers. (We ordered way too much food, but we wanted to try different things.) Both salads were very good. The watermelon feta salad was refreshing and tasted like summer. The mint in it was good and fresh and the flavors paired well with the oregano dressing. The cold smoked salmon salad was also good. Plenty of pickles, capers, and pickled pearl onions topped the salad along with boiled egg, pumpernickel croutons, and a generous portion of salmon. It had a very Nordic feel to it. My aunt and I split the sausage sampler and jägerschnitzel. I ordered red cabbage and sauerkraut as my sides. I should've ordered potato salad or something different because they're both similar in flavor, but I did like both. The red cabbage was more of a sweet and sour flavor. The sauerkraut was very good paired with the sausages and the grainy mustard. My daughter had the kids' chicken nuggets and fries. They were basic nuggets and fries, but she was happy with them and that's what counts. For dessert, I ordered the apple strudel, which was excellent. It was served warm with a caramel drizzle and a side of vanilla ice cream. My daughter had the cheesecake with a strawberry drizzle and my aunt had the german chocolate cake, which I didn't try. Overall, presentation was good, flavor was good, service was ok. We had a good experience and I'll definitely be adding it to my list for the next time I'm in town. read more
