I will give them zero stars if I could. I made the HUGE mistake of bringing my garments to clean to this place because it's a little closer to my apt. I have been taking my clothes for years to White on White cleaners in TriBeCa and I never had an issue. I picked up my clothes and the next day I was going to wear one of the blouses I took to American Thread Cleaners. When I took it out of the plastic bag from the cleaners I noticed it had a big slash on the right sleeve and a similar mark exactly on the same location on the left sleeve. It's an expensive blouse and I probably wore it 5 times since I bought it. The blouse is so damaged that it's impossible for me to wear it. I went back the next day and the business was closed, I tried again twice and they were still closed. I was finally able to get them on the phone and went in person. I arrived with the best intention and disposition, I even brought an additional cashmere sweater for them to dry clean. Because I understand things happen sometimes and I was sure they were going to be nice about my blouse (basic customer service). I was in shock when the manager of the business started questioning me and suggesting I damaged the garment after I picked it up from their business. He went off explaining to me how it was impossible for their solvents to damage clothes like that, he said that if it was their fault the damage will be all over my blouse not only on the sleeves! Then he proceeded to ask me how come the damage was only on the sleeves like I knew!!! He said he will have to send it to a laboratory for an investigation to find out what really happened and that I had to cover the almost $200 fee to do it. He said they were not going to reimburse me for giving me credit if the results showed that the solvent didn't damage the garment. I pointed out that it didn't matter how it happens because the blouse was ruined and I couldn't wear it. What I needed to know was if the business was going to pay for the garment or offer me credit. He said no because the damage was not made by the solvents they use! I then told him that on the receipt it was clear that the business will offer to pay for some damages as long they don't exceed 10 times the value of the service rendered. I showed him the back of their receipt where it says that and the manager said: 'I don't believe in those terms". I said that was outrageous because that was the receipt of the business. I said I could place a complaint in a small cases court. As soon as I said that, a middle-aged man with a strong middle eastern accent came out from the back of the store, claiming to be the owner. When I explained to him that the blouse I picked up from his cleaners was damaged he said that was not possible, he suggested that something happened to my blouse after I picked it up. The manager supported him and I asked them not to call me a liar and he responded that I was the one calling them liars because they didn't damage my blouse. The manager started with his bizarre questioning again about why the blouse was only damaged on the sleeves. They both said that solvent wouldn't do that, therefore it wasn't their fault. I told them that I was not a detective and that as a customer it was not relevant to know exactly how the blouse got damaged, all I wanted was to replace my blouse. Once again, the owner suggested sending my blouse to a laboratory to find out if the solvent was the cause and offered to pay for my blouse if that was the case, I agreed but then he said I will have to pay the almost $200 fee lab and APOLOGIZE to him and the manager for falsely accusing them if it turned out the solvent didn't damage the garment. Complete nonsense! I asked him if they could give me a service credit or partially pay me for the blouse, the owner said that will give me $15.45 credit (the fee I paid for the blouse cleaning). I told him my blouse was over $300 and that was unacceptable. The owner admitted that the blouse was not damaged when I originally dropped it off it at his business but he kept suggesting that it got damaged after I picked it up. The manager looked at the sleeves of my blouse and suggested that my blouse looked worn. Bottom line, they wanted me: 1. Pay almost $200 to find out if a solvent had torn the sleeves of my blouse. 2. Get no reimbursement or credit. 3. On top of it all, I have to apologize to both of them for my wrongdoing! INSANITY In 18 years I have never been treated with so much disrespect in any business in NYC. Both the manager and the owner of this dry cleaning are incredibly rude and delusional. The owner told me I could do whatever I want that he didn't care and I left the shop. If you live in TriBeCa go to White on White cleaners! They are way more professional, less expensive, and much more courteous. As I said it was a big and costly mistake to have brought my business to American Thread Cleaners. NEVER AGAIN. The dress I brought in needed significant alterations and their seamstress did an incredible job customizing the dress to fit my body perfectly. American Thread Dry Cleaners is a small shop tucked away in Tribeca. You almost have to look hard for it to really see it, unless, that is, you walk by this place to work every day. I needed to get my suit jacket sleeve length shortened, and figured I'd give this place a try. The place is tiny, and I almost felt a little shady descending the steps to get to the store. They measured my arm length, but the tailor had no idea how long they normally should be (come on, give me some advice bro). It took them 4 days to do the work, which I thought was a bit longer than normal. When I picked up the jacket, I realized they never moved the buttons. I pointed this out, and the owner, I presume, was apologetic and promised it'd be done within two hours. I went by during lunch and picked it up. Nothing bad with the quality so far, but the tailoring cost me 28 bucks. Points deducted for: not knowing how standard sleeve lengths should be on jacket (I'm slightly embarrassed not to know myself, but that's beside the point), forgetting to move the buttons (this is..pretty obvious no?), needing 4 days to do it, and charging me $28 for it. I got sleeves shortened before for $15...but then again, not in Tribeca, NYC. Can't comment on the cleaning, but their tailoring service could use some improvement. read more

this is an exemplary service! i was lucky enough to find them open on a saturday and badly needed hemming for my pair of pants, luckily i found them and two my surprise they were able to help me meet the deadline of getting them done in about 2 hours. They were very courteous and really provided with a great result. They have fixed a leather jacket of mine that is prone to tears multiple times for an incredibly reasonable price. Their service is quick and their work is phenomenal! They also tailored an event dress for me that needed a lot of work. They were so kind and started with the most difficult part of the dress to be sure it fit well once it was tailored and then moved on to the pricier alterations. I went into this place on a Wednesday to get a pair of slacks hemmed and taken in at the waist. I told them I would need them by Monday morning at the latest as they were for an important work event I had that night. They said it wouldn't be a problem. They quoted me $70, which I thought was pretty steep for that, but I what did I know. Monday morning I go in and at first they cant find my pants. Then when they finally do, guess what? I've been going to American Thread for a few years now since a friend in the fashion industry recommended them. It is pricey, but their quality is superb (and anything that you take back to them that you are not happy with, they will redo for free, no questions asked). I've had enough bad experiences with dry cleaners before that I trust this place enough to pay the extra cash. Another great aspect to the shop is their in-house tailor, Jason. (I'm sorry you had a less than desirable experience Andy C.!) He really cares to make something perfect, so much so that one time I think he re-altered a dress four times because it just wasn't fitting right and I paid only the initial quoted fee. If you recently moved to the area and looking for your regular dry cleaning shop, this is an excellent choice. My boyfriend is always impressed by how neatly his dress shirts arrive. The seamstress is also very good and surprisingly efficient. I once needed a simple alteration to a gown plus a more complex hem job on a pair of jeans and the turn-around time was less than 24 hours. I threw it in my suite case for my red eye from San Francisco and upon arriving at 5am before the bell-ringing, I noticed something from my toiletries bag had leaked onto the dress. I had not choice but to wear it, but you better believe after changing, I found the closest dry cleaners and took the dress in to see what they could do. I had a dry cleaning emergency on a Saturday morning when a friend's cat peed on my leather jacket. I was leaving the next day, and I went to 2 different dry cleaners who told me it would take 3 weeks, and then refused to ship the jacket to me. I got to American Thread, and they cleaned it by 3 PM that afternoon, and only charged me $30, for a rush cleaning of a leather jacket! FANTASTIC! Brought an expensive designer dress in for a temporary alteration that turned out to be more difficult than anticipated/almost impossible. After a first pass at it I was called to say the alteration couldn't be done without possible damage or permanent alteration to the dress. I called back the next day to arrange to pick up the dress and lo and behold, the tailor had come in at 8am (4 hours earlier than usual) to try a new way to complete the job. In my 15 years living in NYC, I have never come so close in inflicting bodily harm on someone as I did yesterday with the owner of this dry cleaner. 3 weeks ago I was delivered half of my own clothes along with 12 pieces of someone elses. I brought everything back to the store and after going through everything we agreed that I was 4 pieces short on my own clothes. I searched through the entire place and was able to find one of my Gucci dresses, so now I was only 3 pieces short. I spent and hour and a half waiting for 2 delivery trucks (supposedly they do all cleaning on the premises - an obvious lie) to see if my clothing would be delivered but it was not. I went away for 3 weeks, I asked the owner to please call me to let me know if he found the clothes but no call. 3 weeks later, I returned to the cleaners. 1 of 3 pieces had been found. When I inquired about the other 2 pieces, the owner of the dry cleaner accused me of lying about what I had brought in. It clearly states "9" pieces on my dry cleaning ticket and now had only "7"! When I reminded him of the hour and a half I had spent waiting in the store 3 weeks prior and that we agreed in writing that I was "3" pieces short, he told me that the other 2 pieces on the ticket belonged to someone else and just kept making up story after story. I now have to take him to small claims court. DO NOT GO TO THIS DRY CLEANER!! If you care about the clothes as much I as do, GO ANYWHERE ELSE! read more

This place is amazing! I called with an emergency tailoring issue (botched wedding dress alteration, wedding days away), and, as soon as the tailor heard my distraught, incoherent explanation of my situation, he told me to come right down, he would put everything aside, and we would make the dress work. I was surprised and touched by his kindness, and continued to be absolutely amazed by the service I received. The other (highly rated and recommended) tailor had charged me a shocking sum and kept my dress for a month, only to return it in a barely wearable state; American Thread returned it to me in less than 24 hours, and barely charged me anything for some really tricky alterations that made my dress beautiful again. I told them I had a few days, but the tailor insisted that he wanted to finish as fast as possible (even though he was obviously really busy!) so that I wouldn't have to worry about the dress anymore. Just amazing. I have never written a review of anything before, but this was a really extraordinary experience. Is it melodramatic to say that it restored my faith in humanity? Maybe...but I mean it!
