This establishment is great for large parties but expect to pay a pretty penny. The meals aren't prices reasonable and they charge 20% mandatory tip. The playlist is also great for the real old school R&B heads. My beignets are crunchy on the outside w a perfect cheese mix. The orange cornbread butter was nothing fancy yet the added jalapeño was. We visited Amina for dinner on a Saturday evening. The food was very good, although the oxtail came out lukewarm and the creamed corn was a bit too sweet. The staff was friendly and professional, but the wait time for seating and service was too long and team members appeared uncoordinated (clearly due to understaffing). The ambience offers an appealing atmosphere with beautiful artwork and decor. The start to our visit was a little rough. We had a reservation for 8:30 and we arrived at 8:20. However, as 9pm approached we were still waiting to be seated. I will say, it was not their fault per se, but the wait was due to the popularity of the spot. I will say, the space itself intimate and there for a crowd can be hard to manage. However, eventually we were seated. As I stated, the space itself is intimate, but space itself is amazing. The decor is top notch and music is enjoyable but forces you to move in close to those around you to communicate. The service is ok. The staff seemed a little overwhelmed and our server was giving her all. Her other table kept her on a short leash. However, the food was a winner over all. The star of the table actually was the baked macaroni and cheese. Usually when we order, macaroni and cheese in a restaurant, it's usually a half notch above the "blue box", but this one was actually really good. It was kid approved and adult verified. We ordered various items and all were really good. The fried chicken, scallops, greens, cabbage, wings, but for me the star of the show were the oxtails. I drove two hours from Brooklyn to check out this " Black Owned" establishment . The ambiance of the culture of art creation is pleasing . The food was good and the mimosas were on point . There was only 1 bartender working during brunch and she kept my drinks flowing . The food was amazing and yes, I cleaned my plate . The two negatives I would say is, there needs to be a larger bathroom and they ran out of the peach cobbler dessert which is a main dessert at this establishment . On a staycation to Philly my partner and I anticipated to try the cuisine of the black own chef and I believe owner Darryl Harmon. When we walk in we're greeted with a staff that is not only friendly and hospitable but damn they're efficient. For drinks we had an Amina's crown and a twist on the French 75 ( because tequila is life). For an appetizer we had the cheesteak Beignets , we didn't know what to expect but damn it was good and FAST! For dinner I had the gumbo, it was well seasoned but there were bits that I had to eat at home like the crab legs or the colossal shrimp but if I wasn't trying to be cute, it would have been demolished right then and there!! The crab legs on top are a nice touch. My partner had the beef short rib, I had a bite it was tender and the polenta underneath was very flavorful. We had Brussels for our veggie and they were nice and crispy and seasoned to perfection. Everything went together perfectly. We sat at the bar where the seats were comfortable but too close together that it was hard to get in and out. The servers were attentive and they actually tried and like the items on the menu. The menu items are very creative. The shrimp tacos are made with fried tomatoes as the shell, nicely flavored coleslaw, and a crispy glazed shrimp sitting on top of a sliced lime. I ordered the Yard Bird & Waffle Flights, which is described on the menu as crispy chicken wings, red velvet waffles, 100% Pennsylvania maple syrup, powdered sugar. The chicken wasn't crispy and could've been better seasoned but I threw some hot sauce on it and I was fine. The waffle wasn't something I'd ever want to eat again. It just wasn't good. It was bright red, lacked red velvet flavor and was chewy. I also had a side of collard greens. The greens were seasoned with smoked turkey and the flavor of the greens was pretty good but the greens were just short of being overcooked, or they were canned. The service was very fast but it could also be because I had a reservation which was right after brunch ended. The atmosphere is nice but it's a little too dark for me. It was a bit hard to read the menu and see my food. Some people had to use their flashlight on their phone to see the menu. It's a small spot and there is a lot right across from the restaurant that charges $25 to park. Since I went on a Sunday evening I was able to park on the street along the construction where u can use park mobile app to park. That ticket was only $5 for 2 hours.My mother got the fried chicken with fries but she didn't care for it too much. She was also still hungry afterwards. I think there should be a little more lighting in the restaurant and for the portion size of some of the options to be a little bigger but hey it's just my opinion. We didn't expect the Cheesesteak Nacheros to be presented with a Dorito bag on the plate; however, being a foodie I understand art and presentation. I just explained it as the Chef's artistic expression. My friend said, it was a reach lol. They only offer turkey bacon for patrons to order. They have dishes prepared with beef bacon but that's not for sale. What was truly the main turnoff is while we were sitting and finishing another round of drinks, the house lights were turned up. Staff started placing the bar stools on the bar and waitresses suddenly appeared (we had to look for ours early to make a request) with billfolds. I said, oh I guess they're putting us out. We looked at the hours on Google prior to making our reservation and it did not mention they close and re-open, as a lot of restaurants do. Had we known, we would have planned accordingly. Also, it's unfortunately when establishments automatically add a gratuity to a check. This is twofold, first, the service usually will be lacking and secondly, the customer usually suffers as a result. This was our experience. This place is the perfect date night spot--moody, intimate, and with an ambience that's warm yet sophisticated. I absolutely loved every dish I tried. Each ingredient felt intentional and added something special to the dish. We ordered the cheesesteak beignets, candied yam purée, and the stand alone rib. We decided to try out a savory and a sweet menu item. The lobster omelette was a pretty decent size and was filled with lobster. The omelette was served with toast, and breakfast potatoes that were perfectly crispy. We also ordered the walnut fudge french toast. Although I asked for the french toast without the walnuts, the presentation was not what I had seen from other pictures. The other components of the french toast were served in small ramekin dishes fudge, fresh fruit, and whipped cream. The french toast was good, I just wished the presentation was still on point as if I did not take the walnuts off the dish. The vibe was definitely there and the staff was great. Amina was recommended by a friend when I was visiting Philly. We made reservations ahead of time and I'm glad we did, because the restaurant is booming on a Saturday night. Our server was very pleasant and helpful when trying to decide on menu items. For appetizers we got the deviled eggs with lobster (there's not much lobster on them at all), Buffalo fried okra, fried Catfish Hush puppies, and the Peri Peri Sticky Wings. For entrees, I was torn between the oxtail and the turkey wings. I was told that the turkey wings are hit of miss. Amina was absolutely delicious and did not disappoint. I had been meaning to try it since last year, and on June 1st, I finally decided to go for it. I figured I would drive down and try to find parking; if I managed to find a spot, it was meant to be! Luckily, I secured street parking after circling the block a few times. Upon entering the restaurant, I didn't have a reservation; however, the bar was wide open, and I managed to grab a seat. I had already reviewed the menu before coming and knew I wanted to try the gumbo with a side. At the bartender's suggestion, I opted for the collard greens, and I was not disappointed. The food took about 20-25 minutes, which was reasonable. It was delivered by someone who appeared to work in the kitchen. The gumbo was excellent -- moderately seasoned with rich flavors. The addition of crab meat really elevated the dish. The collard greens were fresh and delicious, impeccably prepared with no stems in sight, indicating careful washing and cutting. The space is much smaller than it looks in person and I'd recommend a more casual dress than dressy. We made a dinner reservation and when we arrived, no tables were ready. After waiting about 27 mins, some people left the bar and we sat there. 13 mins later, we were offered a table. We liked the bartender, she was very welcoming. Gratuity is included no matter the party size so we spent between 250-300 on the food listed below plus 5 cocktails, just get an idea of the cost. Combined, we got the meal with the Turkey wing dinner, fries, cheese steak beignets, the salmon dinner, and devilled eggs. I enjoyed the devilled eggs but the filling is a little heavy so I removed some of it. The beignets were really nice but taste nothing like beignets. My friend didn't like either of those items. We both didn't like the salmon or Turkey. These are all personal preferences but the friend who recommended Amina admitted to getting other dishes, not ones we got. The inside is small so if it gets busy it can feel a little crowded, but you still have room. I got the deviled eggs ($10), they were pretty good, had a hint of sweetness to them and tasted very fresh. The passion fruit margarita ($15) was also a great drink, didn't taste the alcohol too much but the other flavors were there. The down house gumbo ($32) was ok, probably my least favorite item out of everything. It needed more flavors popping out of it, and it isn't spicy so don't get it if that's what you're looking for.
