Very few places that we both enjoy this much or look forward to returning and this is one of them! I still refuse to go back to this place after the service made some off hand remarks when my mom and I ordered food a few years ago. While this review may be a bit dated it happened not too long ago that I still think it's relevant. The food was alright but I'm not sure how to place this review in an objective manner when I still linger with the horrible service. Never have I heard anyone be told "this is real Orange juice not what you're probably used to". After 6 years of enjoying Amorelia, today was my last visit. My fiancé found a small rock in his pozole. It was the size of about half a small peanut or pistachio. He stopped eating and advised the waiter. The waiter took the rock and said he would report it to management. He later came back and said they have no idea where the rock came from. We emphasized we found it in the pozole and his response was they have no idea where it came from but maybe it came from the beans. He assured us everything would be up to their standards on our next visit. He offered no apology or solution to the problem. He didn't even say they would throw out the batch of pozole to prevent this from happening again. I guess they didn't believe us, but I hope we got the last rock and no future patron bites into a second rock. The only tip I'm leaving on today's bill is for management. Do better. read more

This review is late but I feel it is better late than never. My parents rave about Amorelia Mexican Cafe. Recently, (sort of) for my birthday back in May we had a celebration dinner here. I can't remember the name of the dish but I've been craving it ever since. I don't see it up on the website. It was a tasty fish dish with the right amount of spice. My mother enjoyed a mole dish. I will definitely be back! I cannot wait. Update: My boyfriend and I went here for breakfast, this morning. We arrived at 9 AM. Masks were enforced. I had not dined in the restaurant in years and it was nice. The bar is gorgeous, there are beautiful paintings on the wall, and Amorelia was playing relaxing Latin music. The lighting was pleasant. Miriam provided excellent service and we ordered the Huevos Rancheros. I asked my boyfriend if he would like to do breakfast at Amorelia Mexican Cafe again, and he says sure. Next, I would like to try their lunch and after going over the menu displayed on Amorelia's website, once more, it indicated the dish I'm fond of that I tried for my birthday celebration dinner at Amorelia was the PESCADO VERACRUZANO (Grilled fish, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, yellow peppers, olives, greens and white rice. $18.) I was intrigued by the generally great reviews and the gorgeous photos of Amorelia's food on their website. Never underestimate the value of good food photos! We walked in no reservations, no problem on a Thursday night. I had a Mojito Classico which was delicious and served in a very large glass. I ordered the Molé Poblano Chicken - served with Mexican rice and black beans. I love molé, and the chef here has my esteem because this was the finest molé I've had in ages. My husband ordered the La Tampiqueña and gave it 5 stars. The beef was excellent, onions accompanying it were great, the black beans and rice were excellent. The flour tortillas were hot and fresh. The food is so delicious! Real authentic Mexican food. I had the chile relleno plate and it was amazing! My husband had the enchiladas poblanas and he really enjoyed them. The drinks are also great. We both had margaritas and they were so good. We wouldn't have mind the drinks being bigger, but over all everything was great. Great little spot, but mucho pricey. We went for lunch on a Saturday, but were only given the dinner menu, which was priced much higher and had heavier dishes. There were very limited choices for my kid as well. I had the Carnitas de MICHOACAN, which was $18. They came with a small side of rice and beans. Everything was cooked to perfection and was really delicious. My husband had the chicken mole Pablano, which he liked, but thought it could have been better. That was also $18. My son ordered a steak, bean and cheese burrito, which was $14. It was big and fell apart. He could barely eat it. A Mexican coke bottle was $4.50. We happened upon this place, pretty much by accident, and we are so happy we did. It's a small place in a strip mall, but inside it's very nice and cozy. They offer a lot of the typical things you'd expect from a Mexican restaurant - enchiladas, tamales. But the real treats are their regional dishes from Morelia. I had the Trucha al Coco - trout with coconut and an avocado serrano cream sauce. It's not like anything I've ever had, and it was just wonderful. My wife had the enchiladas Suizas, and they were excellent as well. Mauro was our server and he was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. Without a doubt, we'll be back. This is a follow up to our visit at Amorelia. Great food as always. Delicious and quite tasty. The red Chilaquiles were a bit spicy today, more so than usual. The purpose of this review is for the waiter (male). The restaurant is wonderful, the food is outstanding and it is clean. So no complaints there. The service could be better. More effort could be made by the waiter to check on his patrons. Other waitresses seen during our visit checked on her tables very often. We did not receive similar check-ins especially for water or for incorrect delivery of coffee. Moka Chocolate,,,not Cafe de Olla. He said it correctly but brought out the wrong drink. No problem, things happen but after 5-10 minutes of waiting we had to address this with another waitress because,,,he didn't check in with his patrons. Going in I was hoping to leave a 5 star review based on my previous two visits to this restaurant. But my experience last night wasn't pleasant. The food was pretty good as it was in my other two visits. But the waitress we had was HORRIBLE! I honestly felt like she didn't want us there from the time we walked in and I really don't know why. Maybe I reminded her of someone she didn't like, but that's still unacceptable. We get to the restaurant and notice it was a busy night. But we also see a small table with nobody at it. There was one other larger party ahead of us. I also noticed at least two tables were finishing up. The waitress tells it'll be a 20 minute wait. I'm ok with that. Maybe there's reservations. So we wait outside for less than 5 minutes and she comes out and gets us and seats is at that first small table I noticed. Nowhere near the 20 minutes she told us. Was she hoping we'd leave?? Then we wait, and wait, and wait for service. We notice every table has chips and salsa. EVERY TABLE. In fact, our waitress went to another table right next to ours and asked if they wanted a refill of chips. Finally, 12 minutes in, when the waitress finally comes and asks if we want something to drink, I have to ask for chips and salsa. The chips and salsa finally came as did our food. I asked for a refill of my lemonade in one of the few times I saw our waitress. At the end of the night I look at our receipt. I was charged $2 for a refill of lemonade. I've never been charged for that but ok. What really upset me was that we had to pay $5 for the chips and salsa that every table had. How many hundreds of times in my 50 years have I had to pay for chips and salsa at a Mexican Restaurant? ZERO. Well, not anymore. I just think we had a bad waitress from the beginning. I saw a waiter rushing from table to table doing a good job and the only reason I will ever return to this restaurant is in hopes that I get that waiter. Think open face masa sandwiches. These were topped with carnitas, chicken, and shrimp, respectively. So ono! Our entree order was the pièce de résistance. Chile Colorado. There are no words to adequately describe how perfect this dish was. Braised, melt in your mouth, boneless short ribs smothered in a beautiful, earthy mole sauce. I would die a very happy woman with this as my last meal. Finally, we ended our delicious feast with Tres Leches for dessert. So moist and decadent. A perfect way to end the perfect meal. Mexicans truly know how to throw down in the kitchen and definitely know how to feed your tummy and your soul. If you're ever in Costa Mesa, make sure you stop by this fabulous restaurant. My wife wanted Pizole soup and when we looked for it. We have in shopping center for other shops and never seen the cafe. It is well worth going here. The issue is this peppery taste in the backside. My wife tried to have the server bring a mild salsa. "That is the mild one." She replied. "Can we just get Pico de Gallo?" I asked. the Pico came, it too was peppery on the back side of the flavor profile. Everything they brought us was very peppery. Someone in the back is just shaking that pepper shaker. Lol. $5 for a Mexican Coke was a bit much. They also charged us for the Pick de Gallo. We won't be back. If you can take the pepper, the food was good otherwise. I went to Amorelia a few years ago and it was a nice experience so I finally convinced my mom to come for breakfast and I was so embarrassed. Host was great we were seated promptly. Ambiance was good as well, all tables were filled. But, All went downhill as soon as we were brought the food. My mom ordered the chilaquiles which were your topical corn chips with sauce nothing to crave or recommend again and I ordered French toast which quite frankly were below average. The real problem was the cafe de olla, it wasn't as yummy as usual, it seemed like the flavor was overcompensated by a lot of sugar. BUT the main issue was that the mug was incredibly stained by a bright pink lipstick. I didn't initially notice because it wasn't facing me and I didn't inspect the mug, because why would I? I don't see myself ever even thinking about coming back because nothing about the restaurant is worth drinking out of a dirty stained mug. Sorry for the lack of pictures! read more

That salsa is fresh and has a medium kick to it. To take advantage of Taco Tuesday , we ordered Los dorados tacos because I prefer crispy tacos with my beer. According to older yelp pics of their taco Tuesday menu, it used to be 3 for $6 rather than 2 for $6. Too bad, I just don't think it's much of a deal for $3 tacos. Drinks are okay priced. Tequila ranges from $8 to $$$. All depends on the type of tequila. Good variety. Food was delicious. Tacos Dorados are deliciously crunchy and is sure to hit the spot for taco Tuesday. After enjoying 2 tacos and a drink or two, we shared chicken mole poblano enchiladas. Pretty good! Good flavor of smokey spiced chocolate sauce and tender chicken.Pinto beans and rice are perfecto. I love fried enchiladas. Mine were not fried. The other order was. I brought this up to the waitress and she said "sorry, that is how we serve them here". This was really bad customer service. I came here with some doubts because I'm a picky Mexican food critic. I turned out to be surprised. FOOD: I didn't think anything on the menu looked too appetizing so I just ordered the albondigas with a cafe con leche. I give the albondigas a 2/5. It was probably just tomato soup with meatballs. The cafe con leche was absolutely amazing. I mean if anything you should get the cafe con leche with anything you have here! Granted it was 20 times more delicious because it was cold and raining but try it anyway :) SERVICE: The servers were SO nice! So hospitable. The check did take a while to get to us but the rest of the service made up for that. I wanted to take my cafe con leche to go and the ladies threw away my coffee and gave me a completely new batch of coffee in a to-go cup. So sweet. LOCATION: Located in a strip mall.
