I was so disappointed by my recent visit to Amphora. I love this restaurant and have been several times. Last week, I explained to the server that I am highly allergic to a couple things and asked that she check the pita bread ingredients for me. She returned and said that the pita bread did not have these ingredients. I became very ill that night and for the next two days and required medical attention. I called the manager two days after my visit, and he sent me an image of the ingredients label, and the precise ingredient I told the server I was highly allergic to was listed. I asked the manager if anything could be done. He was nice, but he told me that I should have asked a manager and not the server to check on the ingredients during my visit to the restaurant. This felt as if he was blaming me for asking the server rather than the manager. I would hope that the servers are equipped to deal with questions such as information regarding food sensitivities. I really am disappointed in how this was handled both because the server did not read the label carefully and because the manager did not take responsibility or offer me anything for their error and the two days I spent very ill. I won't be returning which makes me sad as I liked the restaurant. I can't feel good about giving them my money though. Also, the pita bread is very processed and contains many ingredients I would never consume. They could and should do better. read more

The food is ok. We got take out and thankfully we where at the register as the girl struggled with a busted calculator to figure out our total. Start at $36 then $38 then $44. I grabbed my phone and came out to 36 she called the manager over and charged me $46 and said i was wrong. I didnt want to argue my kids were going nuts told her to buy a new calculator with the money she stole. Got home noticed they forgot an item when i called back. The girl told me to hold then held the phone where i could hear her. Then was speaking loudly and rudely then said I will just tell him we didnt charge him for that and he will have to pay again.... I dont know what game they are playing we wont be back. read more

Almost everything I have tried here is amazing! Kreatopita (meat pie), spanakopita, calamari, Thracian chicken, gyro, galaktoboureko, tzatziki. The only thing I'm not as excited about is the saganaki - instead of a fried hard cheese in a block fried, it's blended. It tastes good, but not typically the way I like my saganaki. I normally love this place but I just went to pick up take away and none of the cooks were wearing face masks. I saw one of them even wipe their nose on their arm. Great place love getting the gyro plate! I've lived near this place practically my whole life. My old friend used to work here and I used to drop him off once in awhile but never tried it. Finally tried it on Greek Easter and I think I go back every week/every other week! First time inside checking out the other week and it's absolutely beautiful inside. Delicious freshly made Greek food! Our group of 6 for dinner had 2 people who don't like Greek food until they ate here. The place is small but they are adding more space very soon. Our server was awesome, attentive, smart and with a great sense of humor, everything you would hope for in a waitress! Half of us ordered a summer seasonal chicken dish Samos Island. Wow! Full of flavor, a unique dish not found anywhere else; mango spicy glaze on grilled chicken topped with cubes of watermelon on a bed of authentic rice pilaf! Even the Greek salad that comes with dinner is above the rest with their homemade Greek salad dressing that they sell by the bottle. We took one home. Dinner ended with their award winning baklava cheesecake, again Wow! Would highly recommend this hidden gem for an awesome delicious meal! read more

Amazing authentic greek food. Complete menu and very attentive staff. Rice is amazing, chicken perfectly spiced, yogurt is thick and zesty. I highly recommend trying the appetizers. The hummus, and various sauces and warm pita bread are a slice of heaven. The meats are well marinaded, and tender to the fork. Deserts perfectly sweetened and authentic! Based on the reviews, I really, really, really wanted to like this place. I love Greek food and have been eating it my whole life, so I was excited to give this place a shot. I might be back, but I am hesitant after this experience. If you've never had Greek food before, this might be a good place for you to start. However, if you've had real Greek food, you probably will want to pass. We came in first thing on a Sunday and ordered spanakopita and saganaki to start. The saganaki was the only redeeming factor of the whole meal, it was almost perfect. The pita that came with it however, was not. I have never been a Greek restaurant where they don't at least offer you plain pita with your meal, here it was covered in some sort of spices. The spanakopita was burnt on the top and bottom and the spinach inside tasted old. Next was the main part of the meal, gyro sandwiches. For $7 each, the sandwiches came with nothing else, no fries or small salad or anything, odd but I can deal with that. They were wrapped in the same pre-flavored pita that came with the saganaki. The tzatziki sauce was almost flavorless and very thin. The meat tasted like it was boiled. The sandwiches weren't even half finished when we left, there wasn't a point to even try. read more

Based on the large number of positive reviews on Yelp (and the fact that El Rincon Zacatena is closed on Sunday nights) we tried Amphora. It's okay. We split a fried calamari appetizer and gyro and lamb souvlaki sandwiches. The calamari was lightly breaded and carefully fried. We all tried the dipping sauce, but just once as the sauce was bland and the calamari better alone. The sandwiches were fair. Either the lamb had not been marinated or it had been marinated in something so bland that it imparted no taste. Where was the garlic and oregano? Service was okay, but on a 95 degree day the server did not offer to refill our water glasses. It was not busy. read more

This little Greek restaurant deserves its almost five-star rating from Yelpers. I hadn't been here for over a year and I stopped in recently to see if anything had changed. Thankfully, it hadn't. The service and the food stands out and as with previous visits, the owner (I think it was him) stopped over to see if my meal had gone well. I ordered Greek chicken with rice along with sine spanakopita. The latter arrived piping hot from the oven and not a microwave. The chicken breast was seasoned well and was moist throughout. The salad was a little too heavily dressed but that was my only minor issue with my meal. I took some baklava cheesecake to go which was great. This restaurant has some ridonkulously good Greek inspired food and desserts. They could definitely charge more on their menu and I'd probably pay. A perfect balance between value and quality. First off, I was greeted by a super hot waitress/hostess with a matching personality to go along with it. Did I mention she was hot? The service was impeccable and I couldn't tell if the waitress was flirting or not (hope she was if she's reading this) for tips, but either way, I loved it. I told her she's a good saleswoman! The feta friend cheese was an amazing and unique appetizer. The taste, presentation and quality was superb. Very unique and original twist on fried cheese. My main dish was a nicely baked moussaka. It was nicely spiced and accompanied by pita bread and a well prepared Greek salad. Overall, I was looking for a nice quality lunch and ended up with more than expected. The restaurant is a nice change from the mediocre and average local operations that have plagued the Derry area for a while. other restaurant need to up their game. It's nice to see a restaurant who takes their food seriously and knows the importance of repeat business. Best. Fries. EVER. Seriously, if you eat nothing else there, get the fries!! The dolmades (grape leaves) are some of the best I've had. Our shawarma sandwiches (beef and chicken) were tasty, we each enjoyed our meal immensely. They have Greek beer and wine only, so if you're expecting drinks, this is good to know. It's a small place, and is listed as a fine dining establishment. The reality is the food is excellent, but the atmosphere is cafe-ish. It's quaint, but definitely you don't need to dress to the nines to go there! Jeans suffice. I stopped by because I heard they had gluten free wraps, and so I picked some up. I chatted with the owner about them as he cashed me out. They had just started carrying them and he asked me to give him feedback. A lot of GF stuff is dry or bland, but these wraps were great, and I'd go there again just to get them! He clearly wants to be selling high quality food and cares what his customers think. Finally, I found a great restaurant in Derry! Everything I tasted was delicious. We came on a Friday evening for dinner. The place was busy but we were seated right away. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. I ordered the Psari-Sto-Filo which comes with a simple house salad. Nothing simple about the taste. The house dressing they use is delicious. It had a bright lemon and vinegar flavor, pairs well with their juicy tomatoes and tart feta. The Psari-Sto-Filo was so yummy. It came straight out of the oven. The filo dough was buttery and perfectly crisp. The haddock fell apart beautifully and the mushroom sauce was very savory. I would recommend this dish to anyone that visits. read more

First off: the food here, overall, was very good. I started with the chicken avgolemino soup, which was excellent, very flavorful. My wife had the eggplant frites, which she thought were very good, while I thought they were just ok. As an entree I had the lamb chops with "lemon-oregano potatoes", which were basically lemony fries. The chops were excellent, on par with the best lamb I've had in the area, well seasoned and well cooked (tied with the lamb steak from Cotton). The fries were a little soggy, and maybe a little too lemony, but ymmv. My wife had the psari-sto-filo, which she said was wonderful (as other reviewers have said about the dish. I'm not a big fish eater so I can't personally comment). The food, particularly for the greater Manchester area, deserves a 4.5/5. The service was good, as our server was friendly and helpful, without being obtrusive. The thing that knocks this place down to a 4/5 (still very good), is that it was kind of a bizarre experience. It was a little strange putting down $90 for two apps, two entrees, a glass of wine and a soda (after tip) at a place where: the menu you receive at the table is a small, paper menu, the same as you would get at any takeout place; there are paper table cloths on the tables; and limited seating means that many people arriving to get takeout are within ten feet of where you're sitting. All in all, it was a pleasant experience, if a little strange, but the food is great, and it really is a gem in the otherwise lacking Derry food scene. Don't let the strip mall location fool you, it's well worth the trip. It also seemed very popular for take out. read more

This was my second time at Amphora and was looking forward to a good take out lunch. I ordered the Pastitsio. When I got home the Greek salad looked larger than the main dish. After eating the salad I went to eat the Pastitsio and it was stone cold. The pitsa bread was warmer than this dish. Very disappointed in take out order. Edited for further issue: Amphora was nice enough to provide a replacement dish. Nothingnelse was offered at that time. On trying to eat this second dish the outside was lukewarm, and the internal was cold to the touch. Once more back to the restaurant. There was no manager on duty, no way to refund my money. Was told I would need to wait at least 10 minutes. read more

I'm typically someone who would rather post positive reviews, rather than negative, but, although it pains me, I feel I must vent about my experience today. I live about 1 1/2hrs from Derry but, since i was going to visit my friend who lives in Chester, I decided to pick up dinner at Amphora's. I couldn't have been more disappointed. SO disappointed! I've eaten at this restaurant a few times and always had a good experience. Not so much this time. I was first disappointed to learn that they no longer have lamb kebabs. Ok. So I ordered the sliced lamb shank which came with rice and some type of vegetable...maybe sugar snap peas? I'm not even sure. The lamb was overcooked, dry and tasteless. the rice was mushy and the vegetable was so overcooked i could have eaten it with a straw. The salad was ok. All for a price of $35???!!! Just awful. If the meal was outstanding, i wouldn't mind paying $35 but it surely wasn't worth $33 or $15. After today's experience, i don't know that i will be frequenting this restaurant again when I'm in the area. read more

Food is absolutely delicious! I've been here before but wanted to bring my boyfriend since he is a huge gyro fan. We both order gyro sandwiches which were delicious and fresh! We also ordered side salads with their homemade dressing which are also very tasty. The service was a little lacking. The waitress was very nice but initially forgot our hummus order which then came directly after serving our entrees. We could have cancelled the order but decided to keep it. I went there last night with colleagues from work. The food was excellent. The souvlaki was the best I've had - even with a few trips to Greece and a long term romance with a Greek woman. They have saganaki on the menu - but this isn't the same type that is done in Chicago. That being said, while different, it was excellent. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about their foods. I would go back more, but I live in DC. I will have to schedule more business trips out this way. read more

This is a hidden gem of a restaurant. I live in Derry and my my first visit was a couple of weeks ago so all this time I've been missing out. We sat at the bar, the service and the food were excellent! The bartender, I think her name was Colleen is amazing! She's such a hustler, she never stopped. The whole restaurant and outside patio were very busy but she and all of the workers who came in and out of the bar area ran it like a fine oiled machine. They all worked so well together, they are a great team. Between the service and the food you've got to check this place out, you won't be disappointed. read more

First time and we got takeout. Not sure about the hype of this place. In the end everything was bland. Horiatike salad just seemed like a pile of old veggies layered and the veggies had no crispness and no natural flavor. The thin slices of cuke and tomato gave the salad zero volume. Kreatopita and spanakopita were ok but very oily and didn't have any firmness to them. Pastitsio honestly was a pile of mushy lasagna, again no flavor. It seemed like there is some potential good flavor here but maybe just a bad night. Papa Ginos for half the cost or even tbones (overrated as well) for the same cost may have been a better option. In the end feel like I need to find leftovers in the fridge. read more

My Dad introduced me to this wonderful dining establishment. The food is exceptional. The owner is extremely friendly and walks around to check on his guests. My Dad asked him a few questions. One in particular was about how to cook one of the dishes. He explained it to my Dad. Another time, I was meeting my Dad there again for lunch and the owner remembered me, which is a great quality in a restaurant owner. The place is located in a strip mall. It is clean and modestly decorated. Outside seating is available during the warmer New England months. Enjoy a great meal made by the owner himself. You will be back. What would make a couple that had already waited an hour walk out of a restaurant on Valentine's Day? Dishonest staff (namely the hostess, Carolyn). My husband and I had called ahead and when we arrived we were told the wait was approximately 20 minutes. Instead, we waited an hour and were lied to twice. The first lie was when Carolyn told us that we would be seated at the next available table. When another customer complained because we were ahead of him, she explained to him we had called ahead, gave him free wine samples, and then promptly seated him at the table that had been promised to us. When I asked her why she had given away our table, she then lied again by telling me that the other customer had called ahead (I knew it was not true since I had overheard their conversation). We walked out without regret and will never return. Some suggestions for the owners (I've dined there before): -Revamp the wine list. The selection and quality of wines are very poor. -Get rid of your "call ahead service" because it serves no purpose in your establishment. -Don't hire compulsive liars to your staff, obviously. read more

Meze Sampler : Tzatziki, Melitzanosalata, and Kopanisti and Dolmades : 4 Stuffed grape leaves and Gyro Sandwich: The traditional Greek Sandwich and Baklava Cheese Cake. A great little hidden greek restaurant in a "dirt" mall in Derry. Who would have thought it? The Tzatziki has a nice little kick, the Dolmades were firm and the Gyro was tender, tender tender (don't forget to add feta + fried eggplant!). Just one other party there on a Sunday night, so service was fine and the food came out quick. The Baklava cheesecake was amazing. I must go back. read more
