Ridiculously slow service for food that even McDonald's would be embarrassed to serve.

BUYER BE BEWARE. Just came back from Amy's Café from a dinner with friends. The dinner was ok. The service was ok. It was when the checks were delivered that the evening fell apart. First, the checks were not calculated correctly. Out of the 7 of us, 3 were over charged. 2 of the party that were charged correctly, were given the incorrect change creating an overage in the customer's favor. When the correct change was returned to the server, the server pocketed the change. Now back to the 3 of us that were over charged. We notified another server that the checks had been calculated incorrectly, she collected the incorrect bills and went to correct the situation. That was the last we saw of the bills. We called the owner, Amy, over and told her of the situation. She gathered the 3 bills and issued voids to the charges. She then wanted us to sign the voids. It was then that I noticed my original receipt had been signed. Which I did not do. The signature was blatantly different from my own. When I made Amy aware of this, she conferred with her staff and came back to tell me that the woman that had taken the original bill from me, was the person that forged my signature on the receipt. In the back ground, the woman was indicating through hand gestures and mouthing it was not her. The server came up to me and confessed that she had done it. Her reasoning was because I had not signed it and not seeing a tip there, she would just sign it and put the over charges through. That Explained why my corrected bill was not returned to me. The server signed my receipt of charges that were in access of my bill, because she didn't see a tip on the receipt... Of the other two overages, 1 was handled correctly in the end. The other was still in dispute in the end, as the server returned 2 credit cards to the owner of the last overcharged bill as being declined. Both cards are known good cards. Eat here if you want, but please be extremely careful. Amy assured me that the young lady that committed credit card fraud would be fired, but as she was telling me how this young woman would not be working for her any longer, that same young woman was in the back ground settling up another customer's bill at the register. I am not a rocket scientist, but I know enough to not let the fox run free in the hen house, especially when you know that the fox is a fox... read more

This was our first and last visit to Amy's. After being recommended heavily to try this establishment i have to wonder if i was being punked. My first thought as we walked in for a saturday breakfast, sat down and looked over the sticky plastic menu on the just as sticky table was "where are the cameras?". I was sure this was a taping for gordon ramseys kitchen nightmares. The menu was subpar and very limited for breakfast. Having been to mercantile and mason dixon, i know a small menu can still mean great food. We ordered drinks as quick we could as our server took our order without stopping at the table. And then she forgot my drink altogether. The food that came out was terrible. Grits were mushy and cold, the egg and biscuit in my egg sandwhich was equally cold, but the water was nice and cold, so there was that. Oh and we saw our server twice, once on ordering and then for the check. Please try any of the much better restaraunts in fredericksburg and avoid completely or just go to a wafflehouse. read more

We visited Amy's on Saturday 9/12 for dinner. I had been there before and I think it's one of Fredericksburg's under appreciated spots. Awesome ambiance. I love the outside area and the live music. So, why only 2 stars? Because unfortunately Amy's misses the mark with food. I ordered the Orange Glazed Swordfish with Asparagus and Rice Pilaf. It was one of the specials. My daughters ordered the 1/4 Rack of Ribs and 2 sides. My wife ordered the the other special which was a Rib Eye. One of my daughters asked for mashed potatoes (they were out of the Mac & Cheese). The server asked if she would like gravy on the mashed potatoes and she declined. We all had salads. The salads came and they looked old. Like they had been made earlier that day. The dressing was on the side in a plastic cup. The entrée's came and my swordfish had grill marks but was raw in the middle. The asparagus was room temperature. The Rice Pilaf was good. All the plates were less than hit. Like they had sat in the kitchen for a while. My wife's dish was good. The ribs were good. Fall off the bone and a little heat in the flavor. The mashed potatoes didn't show up. We reminded our server and he apologized and went a got them. He brought them ....covered in gravy. I reminded him of the order and he brought her some more without gravy. The server was very nice but appeared a bit in the weeds. My friend and I have been trying to make our way to Amy's Cafe for a year. We are usually out and about at breakfast time, so it has never worked out. Finally, today we got the chance to have lunch at Amy's. To say we were disappointed is a gross understatement. I ordered the soup & half sandwich combo. I chose Grandma's potato soup and chicken salad sandwich. The potato soup was the most bland and disappointing thing that I have had in a long while. My sandwich was decent. There wasn't much chicken salad on the bread. The chicken salad itself was just 'okay'. Our server noticed that my soup was still full and asked if there was a problem. I just told her that I didn't like it and it had no flavor at all. She offered me a cup of their 'delicious' broccoli cheddar soup instead. Well, delicious is most definitely not a word that I would use to describe it. Awful, comes to mind. It tasted like it came from a can. It was extremely thick and like the potato soup, was very bland. My friend also tasted both soups and agreed that they were bland. The owner came over to ask why I didn't like the potato soup and I told her exactly what I told the server. The owner seemed offended that I didn't like her Grandma's recipe. Sorry, but you asked and I gave my honest opinion. When I told her it was bland she said that they don't season it because her "older" customers complain. Well, I don't think I've ever heard of not seasoning something to appease a few customers. I'm not suggesting you pour a container of salt into the pot, but a little seasoning would help a lot. My friend ordered a grilled chicken salad. When her food was placed in front of her, we thought there was a mistake. It was the size of a side salad for $12.00! That was outrageous! $12 for a 'side' salad. Half that price would have been more reasonable. My meal was comped. I did not ask them to comp my meal, they offered, which was the right thing to do. I had to stop elsewhere on my way home to get myself something to eat. I have read nearly every review here on Yelp and I just can't understand where the 4 and 5 stars are coming from. As we waited for our food, we reviewed their dinner menu and thought the prices were quite high. Especially if the quality was anything like their lunch options. I came in a little bit ago (it's been about 3 or 4 days) my husband and I were celebrating our 10 year anniversary and we decided to have dinner here... everything was fine except for the manager that was behind the bar kept flirting with my husband.... and I know people are going to read this and think that I'm just insecure.... but that's not the case.... she was actually flirting with my husband right in front of me... she touched his hand and rubbed his arm.... she winked at him and ignored me most of the evening. I was very irritated but tried to make the most of my night... until when i came back from using the restroom and she was rubbing my husbands back.... I couldn't believe how disrespectful and rude she was when I returned to my seat and she acted like I was the problem.... when we were leaving out instead of her just saying by she came around and met us at the door to give my husband a hug!! This is our first time here... we are not regulars!! My husband tried to turn around and leave out the door before she grabbed him and she just hugged him from behind. We were both pissed and did not like "over friendliness" that was only directed to my husband. She was not professional.... I would like to say her name started with a B.... she was definitely inappropriate and said very inappropriate things in front of me and my husband, that we did not want to hear!! She also wanted my husband to refer to her as chocolate.... but he had a better name for her I would definitely expect this at hooters but not at such a place that pretends to have so much "class" I didn't speak to the manager because she was the manager and it's pointless to complain to her, so figured posting on here would be more effective. read more

Went to Amy's because I had heard good things about it so my daughter and I had lunch there the other day. I had one of the daily specials, a roast beef sandwich with a side of egg potato salad and my daughter had a vegi wrap. Everything tasted good and we were pleased and left. Later that night I was in the bathroom on the pot all night and wound up loosing 2 pounds that day. So the next day we were in the area and I spoke to Amy about this and she totally discounted me and said that there was no way that I got sick from the food here. No concern no compassion and yes Amy there were several ways that I could of gotten sick. Do you wash your employees hands and know how long the food sits out!! After two times of trying this cafe, I am not going back. We went in for brunch on a Sunday. Parking is horrible. They have two small parking lots that do not accommodate the available space that they have for seating. There isn't anywhere else to park...no street parking. We got inside about 11:20 am (breakfast served until 12 pm) and instead of greeting us normally, the hostess just told us that there is a 20 min wait in the kitchen for breakfast, OK no problem. We sit at the bar. Next lady comes and tells us that they are not serving breakfast anymore at 11:30! They basically told us to go somewhere else to eat breakfast because the kitchen is switching to lunch. So we left along with many other customers. We actually saw some of of them at the dinner we ended up going to. Short staffed, unprofessional, and inconsiderate of their customers. Would be awesome place if they just listened to what their customers want. Serve breakfast parallel to lunch or serve brunch later than 12 pm like everyone else and hire more people. You would have my business weekly. read more

My Girlfriend and I found this spot on a whim one day, we were greeted by a great host, the food was amazing and the staff had amazing things to say to my girlfriend and I. We go atleast 1x a month and they remember us and treat us like family. We on occasion bring my 1 yr old niece and they always remember her lemon fetish. read more

This used to be my favorite restaurant to visit but it has really gone downhill. I was there on Thursday night and the service was horrid. There wasn't many customers in the restaurant so I assumed the servers would be attentive but boy was I wrong. My server, Tonya I think, and the other server were acting like teenagers; being loud and rowdy. At one point, her and the other server disappeared into the restroom for awhile and were totally ignoring their tables. They acted more like drunken party girls than professionals. I'm by no means a needy customer but I expect my drink to be refilled in a somewhat timely fashion and not to be ignored. Fast friendly service. Clean restrooms. Nice ambience - both indoor and outdoor seating. All food was fresh and clearly homemade. Homemade chips were very tasty. Pulled pork ok. Kids gave thumbs up on grilled cheese and Reuben. read more

I googled "best Reuben" near Stafford and set out to Amy's cafe in Fredericksburg. The waitress and hostess were fabulous and so was the Reuben. Like my waitress said you won't stop till your down, it's that good. Unfortunately it was (I had hoped to bring half home, lol) The sweet potato fries were the best I've had. They are cut thinner than I've ever had and whatever oil they use makes them super crispy (not greasy)... Loved every bite. read more

I stopped by here on a Thursday night for a bite to eat. I sat at the bat and there was a band playing outside, which is good and bad. The service was exceptional! The price was right for the amount of food I got. I got the BBQ platter. I sort of expected a few different kinds of BBQ but all I got was a large pile of pulled pork. Luckily it was very good. I'd come back, but probably not on my own. Did I say I was in the area on a business trip? So I doubt if I'll be back for that reason alone. read more

Nice atmosphere. It's a cozy place for a hot meal. The food is ok. Staff is courteous and service is good. Prices are a bit high for what you get. Small issue with appetizer which was quickly rectified by our server. One small complaint though, instead of a deviled egg with our sandwiches we got a pickle. Disappointing. read more

My husband and I were anxious to try out such a quaint and wonderfully reviewed eatery. Before we even walked in, the disorganization was noticeable in that the open/closed sign was still signaling closed despite the cafe having been open for some time before our visit. Once inside, we found the hostess to be very scattered and stressed, though very nice. When seated, we found service to be very poor. We had to ask for waters no less than four times, the two options to order, waffles and omelettes, took eons to make it to our table though many excuses were readily available (though we never asked), and the cleanliness was much to be desired. I watched a chef come in to refill buffet items several times with his fingers in the bowls of the items to be refilled. Cups were help by the rims, and dipped into the ice to fill. We were also HORRIFIED when the table next to us ordered coffee and were told they would have to share the spoon brought as "it's the only spoon clean in the restaurant"...And no, it was not extremely busy. Finally, we found the food much to be desired and extremely lacking for the price. Disappointment isn't enough to describe how we felt walking out. We don't get to eat out often, and we were excited to do so on this particular morning. This experience has been the first time yelp was way off! Funny thing is, since we have gone and I have chatted about our experience, many many folks have mimicked our feelings/disappointment... So who is writing the great reviews????? Awful in every way. We went for lunch this past weekend and will not be returning. Nearly everything that we ordered was previously frozen or prepared food (crinkle cuts fries, a piece of "battered" fish, applesauce served in the Motts container with cover, bagged baby carrots, Kraft Mac and Cheese - served slightly warm, etc) One could hit the frozen food aisle at Giant, spend 20 bucks and recreate this meal at home. The food quality made it seem as if we were eating at an elementary school cafeteria. Service was average at best. For the same price point, one could cross the river and hit Foode or another establishment and enjoy a fresh, home cooked meal rather than the garbage that we were served. read more

My husband decided to check out Amy's for Friday night late dinner, since he knows I'm always looking for places to eat outside in the summer. He, my 2 teenagers, and I loved the food! My husband and son raved over the meatloaf, and I enjoyed the Rachel sandwich with the best sweet potato fries I recall. We held our son's rehearsal dinner at this wonderful place. The staff was more than courteous--they were positively solicitious to our every request, even before we made them. The food was excellent--amazing everything--even the green beans and mac 'n cheese still warm gastronomic recollections. We enjoyed live musical entertainment by a very talented country-music performer. If I am ever travelling through Fredericksburg on the way anywhere north or south, I will certainly pull out all the stops to return to a fine meal at Amy's Cafe. read more

Extremely expensive for a cafe/restaurant! 2 burgers w/ fries, 2 beers and apple pie a la mode for almost $40 . . REALLY! The a la mode was $2.00 extra. Your prices are high for the quality of food. This place is just great. It is a very comfortable atmosphere and the cooks really know what they are doing. We had the chorizo soup and chicken-fried steak, which was so large it could have easily been split between two people. The mini-corn muffins served with lunch are worth driving 100 miles for by themselves. The restaurant plays live music on certain days which is quite fun. This is a historical building, so travelers or locals who enjoy history need to add this spot to their to-do list. The many photos hung around the restaurant tell the properties' story. One photo which is particularly interesting shows the restaurant under water during a flood. Server "Betty" provided outstanding service with a smile that I won't soon forget. How wonderful it is to walk into a place and feel like everyone loves you and can't wait to give you that comfort food you need. We are regulars and anytime we can cruise to Amy's for a meal it is a very special treat. read more

I've been going to Amy's since it opened. It's a warm, very friendly place to meet and visit with friends. When my husband and I have visitors, we always take them to Amy's. The building is an historic one and it is decorated with vintage photos of the Falmouth area. The food is terrific (my favorite is the crab dip appetizer), and the staff will do anything possible to make sure you're happy with the food and service. I'm not sure why Jonathan H did not say something about having a problem with his food - if there was something wrong - Amy would, I'm sure, want to know about it so that it could be corrected. As far as the smoking that Jonathan mentioned, Amy's has always been a smoke free restaurant. Folks have smoked on the deck, but I don't understand how that would affect the dining inside. read more

Well, where do I start? I've been to Amy's quite a few times and initially thought that Amy was a genuinely nice person. I liked the staff and I thought the friendly atmosphere made up for the mediocre food. It didn't take long for me to see the true side of Amy. Cursing out her employees in front of customers, Flipping off her upstairs neighbor, and I've even overheard her make some racist remarks about customers. I really don't understand how she manages to keep enough loyal staff members to run that place. Ok food, friendly staff(at times), terrible owner. Would not recommend. read more

My family ate at Amy's for Mother's Day and it was absolutely awful. How you can make food have no taste is a mystery to me. The buffet was $20+, and nothing tasted good. Even the chocolate covered strawberries had no taste. How about some salt and pepper. There are too many other decent places to eat in Fredericksburg so don't waste your time on this place. read more

Management is very unprofessional. This was my first time to Amy's Cafe and will be my last. I was there because I heard the music was usually good and the atmosphere was relaxing. It would have been better had it not been for the owner (as identified by our server) was using profanity and drinking heavily. Obviously not an image I feel should be shown by an owner of an establishment. However, the food was ok and the menu selection was adequate but with the focus on the drinking atmosphere this "restaurant" shouldn't be taken seriously for the quality of the food. Identified as a bar would better describe this place. I don't recommend Amy's for the family but if you want to take a date there, it is a cheap place to go. read more

Stopped in here yesterday with my son for a quick bite to eat and we loved it!! We both had burgers and they were probably the best we have had in a very long time, and we eat out and travel a lot. My 16 year old is quite the food critique, so it's not that easy to impress him, and Amy's Cafe did that and more! Seriously????? I brought my family to this establishment last Sunday (April 17); huge mistake! Upon entering we stood at the reception area for over 15 minutes watching a totally confused staff continuously rush by without acknowledging our presence. Once greeted, we were directed to one of the numerous open tables (bussed and un-bussed)...as we took our seats the hostess casually brushed debris from the previous diners off the table onto the floor with her hand and simply smiled at us...I'm thinking yikes...what's next. As for the meal, I ordered a medium rare cheeseburger...the burger arrived well-done with a spot of un-melted shredded cheese one would expect to find on a taco. My daughters meals were equally poorly prepared...example, one daughter's grits' consistency was that of wallpaper paste; tasteless; therefore, totally inedible. Yet the circus continued...a person emerges from the kitchen area to retrieve a 5 gallon bucket they use to discard old beverages and other consumer waste. We were treated to an extra viewing of this repugnant "sauce" as the person retrieving the bucket stop by our table to engage another employee. Needless to say at this point my fun meter was pegged and I asked for the check. Realizing that I was not happy our server tried to make it right by removing the charge for my overcooked burger...somehow I was hoping she had the power to remove the entire experience from my mind. Pay cash!! Check your BILL! Our bill did not show the tax on it, only what we ordered and a total amount due. I told the waitress that our total did not match what was on the bill and she said the rest was tax. Nearly 10% tax! I gave the waitress the money to cover the bill and her tip and told her that I did not need any change. Moments later, she brings me change plus additional money. I told the waitress that she gave me back too much and she took it back. She never came back with a receipt. Others in our party paid via credit cards and that was a nightmare. Some were incorrectly charged and some had there meal charge put on the same ticket and another was told they their credit card was declined twice, not true. Later we found out that they did not take Am. Express. It took a very long time to straighten out the incorrect billing and even then it was still wrong! We were still waiting for all the corrections to be made... and we waited and waited. Not until we called Amy the owner over did she figure it all out and corrected the billing issues. That is when we found out that the waitress had signed one of the credit card receipts herself. YES, she signed it herself, that is why she never came back with one of the corrected bills!! Food was okay but pricey for some items. Amy, the owner was nice to clear things up but I would not go back. Not worth the trouble or headache. read more
