There was no music playing and we felt quite awkward holding a conversation in front of these silent observers. The food: The food was great, we'll definitely be ordering takeout or delivery from here in the future. We tried the pork dumplings to start, which were freshly prepared, crisp, and delicious. We tried the seafood lo mein and red curry fried rice with pork for our main course and really enjoyed both. The only sour note to our meal was the mango smoothie. It had a great flavor and at first I believed chunks of real mango, but upon closer inspection the smoothie was filled with these weird rectangular, colorless jello things. The texture was awful and I couldn't drink anymore of it, but my fiancé didn't mind. The service: Almost as weird as the ambiance. I love Amy's. Although a bit pricier than other Chinese take-out spots, it's definitely worth it based on taste and freshness. First, the interior when you walk in is totally not what you'd expect compared to other Chinese take-outs. It's very homey, intimate even. The kitchen is in the back behind a curtain, not behind the registers like most other Chinese spots. And the lady who's always there (Amy I presume) is a total sweetheart. Always attentive to her customers who dine in (from what I've seen, though personally I've always gotten my food takeout). On to the food. The first thing I ever got there was the steamed shrimp dumplings. These are delicious. Pieces of fresh shrimp with fresh veggies (carrots, peas) inside the dumpling dough, steamed to perfection. One of the healthiest items on their menu (FYI they have a whole section in their menu devoted to diet/steamed foods). The other two dishes I've tried are the Sesame Chicken and General Tso's Chicken, both delicious. Again, the freshness of Amy's is what puts it over the top when it comes to Chinese spots. Whereas some places you might find dark pieces of who-knows-what claiming to be chicken, both these Amy's dishes use white meat chicken; it looks and, most importantly, tastes superior. I love this place. It's my go-to Chinese delivery place to my bachelor pad in Wash heights. I'm quite the dumpling fiend. I get 4 sets of dumplings and feed on them for days: fried veggie, steamed veggie, steamed shrimp and Schezuan shrimp. Everything amounts to about $28 dollars and I get 4 meals out of it at least! The curry noodle soup with pork is awesome. It isn't overly pungent curry flavor.. My favorite rice is the kimchi fried rice. It is what you would expect from a kimchi fried rice...a good amount of spice and flavor. The peach green tea with tapioca pearls is a must. And you have to start out with the scallion pancake. Not only did the delivery guy get here quickly, the poor man was panting and puffing, because he'd clearly RUN up the 4 flights of stairs to get to the apartment on time, so that the food arrived piping hot. Piping, screaming hot. If you prefer to eat with chopsticks, please make sure to ask for them, because they provided forks by default, which is a shame. Also, if you enjoy soy sauce on your stuff, be sure and ask for a bit extra, because we only got one packet with our two entrees. 3 years ago I gave Amy's a 3 star rating. They've gone from a $15 minimum on Seamless to $25 ($18 on GrubHub). I placed an order through their website since there it is only a $15 delivery minimum. After 45 minutes and no food, I called them. They still hadn't made it because they were busy. I swiftly cancelled the delayed order, which they hadn't even charged yet, and called up Lotus Express. For less money and far better customer service, my food was to my door in 15 minutes. They even called as soon as I ordered to let me know they had run out of string beans and if I'd mind broccoli. I adore Amy's and visit pretty regularly. First of all, this is not your typical New York greasy Chinese takeout place. Amy's actually has a nice little seating area (and it doesn't consist of cheap wood booths). There is a nice fish tank to keep you amused while you wait for takeout or while you dine. The service at Amy's is also very friendly. The woman who runs the place is super-nice and her son is sweet and helpful. Okay, on to the food. Amy's menu is quite extensive, and though I have yet to really branch out from my favorites (which I keep eating again and again), everything I have tried at Amy's has been very good and has exceeded my expectations, especially considering it is in Inwood and east of Broadway. (Ooooh! Scary!) I ALWAYS order the hot and sour soup and it is ALWAYS delicious. The soup has a great broth that is not too thick and not "syrupy" as some hot and sour soup broths can be. The chunks in the soup are tasty and come in a range of flavors and textures. Best of all, the soup actually provides a bit of a burn. I cook with habaneros, so it's impressive if hot and sour soup is actually hot for me. The vegetable dumplings are perfection. Filling is tasty. Cripsness is perfect. Not too much grease. Nothing at Amy's is greasy! I've tried the string beans with tofu, tofu with black bean sauce, tofu with peanut, vegetable lo mein, vegetarian chicken with broccoli, and the vegetable fried rice. I can't really pick a favorite, but they really do know how to treat tofu. And it's not always the same. For example, the tofu in the black bean sauce is on the softer side and not fried. The tofu in the string bean dish is cut into little rectangles and very crispy. The tofu in the peanut dish is cut into larger chunks and fried. Oh man, that peanut dish is YUMMY! I love Amy's. It's super-clean, very friendly, and incredibly delicious. Bravo! She was right and Amy's has one of the most diverse menus I've ever seen for a Chinese Restaurant. I ordered the steamed vegetable dumplings with hot oil sauce. It was heavenly. I even lapped up the sauce like a dog it was so good. But beware, if you have a peanut allergy stay away. I also ordered the general Tso chicken which actually was real chicken meat and was a perfect texture; crispy, saucy but not hard. Lastly, I had the delicious lemonade. For some reason, typically pricey meat options like shrimp and cashews are part of the lunch deal but the only vegetarian options are broccoli and rice or soft bean curd with string beans - boring! I asked if I could get a veggie meat instead of the meats but was told no. If I wanted veggie meats, I'd have to pay $10.95 - nearly double. Not cool. More than the lack of getting a good deal, I didn't appreciate that the server was very cold and rude. The vegetable dumplings are a really good choice. Also, you can't go wrong with the meat dumplings. Naturally, I like them steamed. They hold together nicely and are amply filled. The stand out dumpling offerings include the dumplings in the hot sesame oil and the steamed pork buns. Consider those, when ordering. The other more dinner-y options are very good. Their soups, as well, are a solid choice. Forgive the lack of detail here, we've become focused on those small bites because, they're pretty darn good.
