These guys are like doctors for antique radios. They basically performed surgery on my boyfriend's Bose from the '90's, and even built the part for it that Bose no longer manufactures. Without going into the long and boring story, through my own fault I messed up the wheel and it wasn't playing records properly. I called this place, and while I was told there is normally a waiting period after dropping off a device, when I explained the situation I was told to just bring it in and they would look at it. When I arrived, they took a few minutes to diagnose the issue (a washer had fallen out when I had disassembled the player) and fixed it for me, at no charge! I did ask if I owed anything, but was told not to worry about it. After a deeply disappointing experience at a home repairman in Brooklyn, I brought my vintage 1970s solid state Yamaha CR-2020 receiver in severe need of repair to Analogique, and they brought it back to life. I could not have been happier with my experience. From the get-go, it was a very professional experience. I dropped off the unit, and they spent 3 days making an estimate of the work required. When I heard back from them, I agreed to the repair and they got started. The repair took about 5 days (insanely fast, especially compared to the last guy who tried to fix it) and they did a top-notch job. Went above and beyond the problem with the unit, going so far as to replace burnt out lightbulbs and clean up after the last repair. These guys are perfectionists, and are honest about their work. When I picked my receiver up, they let me know that the tuner frequency wasn't completely accurate (the station frequency displayed was slightly different than the frequency being delivered). When I brought it home and hooked it up, the unit performed flawlessly and sounded like it used to - beautiful! I've learned that you get what you pay for when it comes to vintage stereo repair - and while the repair at Analogique wasn't cheap, they did a top-notch job. My receiver plays like new! Do not use these guys. Had a simple repair that should've taken 5 min. They told me over the phone to bring it in and they'll fix, easy. When I got there, not only were they rude, they told me it would take 2 weeks or more. And that they need to open it up and look inside (+$75) and that a minimum repair is $150 on top of that. When I tried to explain the issue, the staff was rude and interrupted me. It didn't matter if I knew exactly what was wrong and how to fix it. Their "business" is built on exploiting and overcharging people for simple tasks like needle replacements. I'm disappointed that Turntable Lab referred me to this exploitative repair shop. read more

They are expensive but its worth it because they do a good job and when there is a problem they stand by their warranty which went a long way for me when I had a lot of trouble getting my turntable to work properly. Technician Axl (I hope I'm spelling it correctly) did a great job, and stuck it out as my old, outdated equipment struggled to live again and I had to take it back in multiple times under warranty to get it to work properly, which it does now and its great to have. I hope this place is always around cause there really isn't much else like it. Just know that at minimum you are going to spend $150, even if you decide not to proceed with a repair after taking it in for a quote. But I brought two turntables in, and one of them was repaired for that $150 minimum because there wasn't much wrong with it, while another was twice as much to get working, and took tons of work. The moment you walk into the decrepit building in Chelsea where they are located and wait for the one working elevator you begin to feel uneasy about Analogique. As you wait for someone to notice you holding your heavy piece of gear, you have plenty of time to take in how dark, dirty, musty and hot the place is, like the back room of a pawn shop. Crudely lettered and written posters behind the counter remind you in no uncertain terms that the minimum charge is $150, labor is $75 an hour and no credit cards are accepted. After describing my problem (static on one channel of a 14 year old integrated amp) I was told that I'd hear from them in a few days with an estimate based on my $75 non-refundable cash deposit (which would be applied to the repair). After a week I didn't hear from them so I called and spoke to the counter guy who is clearly not a technician and just repeats what he's told. Apparently I needed a couple of relatively inexpensive parts replaced that had failed with age but it would cost $360 for them to thoroughly check out the unit and "restore it to factory specs." Since that was a minimum of fours hours on the bench at $75 per I imagine they were recommending they test and replace every capacitor, clean every switch, examine every solder tracing, adjust the bias back to factory spec, etc. etc. etc. Or if they weren't going to do all that unnecessary work they were just looking to rob me. I didn't want all that work done. I just wanted the obviously faulty part replaced which should have cost less than $10 for the part and an hour of labor. The counter guy quickly replied, "Let me ask the technician" and came back a moment later and said, "$285 is the best he can do." Wow, a $75 instant discount! Clearly these guys pull their estimates out of their a*ss and if you don't like it you can just take your amp back and they get to keep the $75 estimate fee. Peeved about this, I called one of Analogique's competitors where the owner answered the phone and spent several minutes patiently listening to my problem and explaining how he did business. Bottom line, with any old electronic device there is inevitably deterioration but with time and effort pieces that were well made to begin with can be made "good as new." "Good as new" costs a lot more than the amp is probably worth after all those years. But he told me, "We always give the customer the option. The minimum price to fix the problem he came in with and a price to make the unit as good as it can be." I took my amp back from Analogique, swallowing the estimate, and for less than they wanted in addition I bought a classic power amp on Ebay which I will use with my "broken" amp serving as a preamp (the problem is in the amp circuitry). I wish I could suggest an alternative to Analogique but the repair of older high end audio is a field where the chances of getting taken are very high. As it is I'd stay far far away. read more

Aftyer years of failed attempts elsewhere I brought my Braun SK55 in here for repair and they did a fantastic job bringing it back to life. I later had some more issues with it and they were happy to take another look and make some adjustments under the warranty. It's been great ever since. Do not use these people. I wished I had read these Yelp reviews before I dealt with them. I dropped my speaker off 11 days ago. They did not tell me at the time that they don't accept credit cards for the deposit. So when I called 2-3 days later to check on the troubleshooting, they told me I needed to write them a check before they look at it (notice how they did not call me?). I mailed a check. It was received and cashed and I called 2-3 days after (notice how they did not call me). They told me the speaker 'was not giving a signal' and they had to do further testing of the amplifier board transistors at a tune of 350$ (The speaker is worth about 500.00). They also had to send away to Mackie to get the manual for a very commonly sold speaker. I thought they were an approved shop. I guess the term 'approved shop' means very little. They are janky, unprofessional and expensive? Really? keep looking. read more

I'm not sure why there are some bad reviews on here - these guys are very busy, but they do a very thorough job with an artisan's touch, and they can fix things that no one else can. We need to support craftsmen like these in our city, otherwise we will be forced to drive to Long Island to get anything repaired! I brought in an ancient Nakamichi SoundSpace 8 unit whose CD player had stopped working. I was also caught off guard by the cash/check only policy, but it was merely inconvenient. The man in charge was very pleasant and knowledgeable. They finished the initial estimate but never called me back - I had to call them and confirm that I wanted the repair. Phone service was very helpful. They then repaired the unit but never called me back, and again I had to call them. When I brought the unit home it only half worked! Luckily there was a warranty on repairs, and after I brought the unit back a second time, they got it working perfectly, good as new. So, some bumps along the way, but service was always great, and in the end I got a beautifully refurbished Nakamichi. I like the people here, but their technical know-how leaves something to be desired. I dropped off my Marantz receiver here because one channel wasn't working. I picked it up and when tested at home, the problem was still there. I took it back again. When I picked it up again the manager said he had found the problem. I took it home and tested and the problem did show up again. I stopped going back. They had charged me a bit over $400 for the work and it was essentially not fixed. My receiver still has the same issue, although I noticed by tweaking some knobs gently the channel would get signal, so I've just been using it like that for a while. They did a proper install of a tweeter on a vintage KEF speaker, no complaints there, but taking the Marantz back again and again cost me a lot of cab money and they didn't fix it, for all the money I spent. read more

Despite the preponderance of negative reviews here, I brought in an amp for inspection/overhaul because I live within walking distance which allowed for the massive unit to be brought in rather easily. The amp, a Sansui AU-717 Integrated, was exposed to contaminated water and although working, was in need of renovation/overhaul, since nothing internally had been replaced since being manufactured in 1977. In the end I actually thought more could have been replaced and I would have paid for the parts/labor. Costs were reasonable considering these things typically cost a lot. I'd love to pay less but alternatives are often even more expensive. There wasn't a detailed outline of part costs but I was given all the replaced parts and values are not difficult to find. The owner isn't as communicative as he could be. The service was quick, less than two weeks. The unit sounds great and they replaced a fair number of capacitors, relays, and other circuits. All in all, a very satisfying experience. read more

I brought a KLH Model 20 in to this place because it was the only game in town. The run down nature of the establishment as others described impressed me unfavorably, it's true, but in New York City one quickly learns that appearances aren't everything. That said, the second impression, being the $75 nonrefundable fee, to be paid up front, impacted me with the qualities of a ruse. But once again, as I've already said, this was the only game in town. I had left my sweetie-pie in the no parking, no standing zone downstairs and was in a bit too much of a hurry to see this through. Being summer I was in no mood to cart the stereo around the sweltering city in search of some place else, some other vague lead into the field of electronics repair. I felt that handing over my precious stereo was enough of a deposit, yet despite my better judgment I found myself to my surprise fishing out and handing over the required wad of cash. As others have stated, the week passed and I did not hear from them. After waiting another few days I checked in with them. They said they had looked the device over and quoted a fee beyond the value of the unit to complete the work. As you already know I've lost the $75 fee. Agreeing to let them tinker with it boiled down to a nagging persistence of a sentimental nature, the $75 fee already paid and that I simply wanted the work done. They did do the work, and they did actually contact me when they had finished and told me to come pick it up. I did come to pick it up. Once again I left sweetie-pie in the no parking no standing zone downstairs. Needless to say I was in something extra of a hurry especially because the elevator in that building is beyond the usual New York elevator decrepitude and one cannot but help to feel immensely foolish standing amid hordes of other unkempt souls awaiting its arrival and the disgourging of its sweaty load. When I finally entered the office I found to my left amid heaps of broken equipment my precious KLH Model 20 unit running untended, some negligible FM station blaring while a filthy, heavily used, scratched and greasy Columbia pressing of some God-forsaken and best forgotten album by some God-awful band like Journey or something I would never want to soil my ears with was left turning incessantly with the needle bouncing at the center of the disc. AND the unit was overheating: not simply warm, but burning hot to the touch, having evidently been left in that condition for a very, very long time. I pointed this out to the little man and he practically scoffed at me, like I were some kind of idiot. Well, I must be one, I suppose. With no time to really argue about the matter I left with the unit. The amplifier was indeed fixed and the radio comes in with astounding clarity. The needle, needless to say, was ruined. The bill states that special attention was given to the functioning of the turntable. There appears no evidence that any was given. Its a rather blatant oversight then that they also gave me my improved system with a now un-useable needle. I found a replacement on-line and figured it would be less of a bother than letting Analogique have it again (see LP Gear review). After fixing the action of the tone arm and fidgeting with the switches myself a bit my unit is now at long last in perfect working order. My final word on Analogique is that they require haggling over the fee and need to be prodded into doing what is asked of them. Have no expectations they will do precisely what you ask nor what they claim they will do. All my experience speaks of an over-priced crappy hovel of a place. read more

Let me start by saying that I'm not the kind of person that enjoys leaving bad reviews. I brought Analogique 3 units to work on, 2 were NAD amplifiers. I used Analogique because they are mentioned on the NAD website as an authorized repair specialist for NAD equipment. I am going to contact NAD to alert them to the fact that this business has changed hands and is no longer run by competent repair specialists. My experience was incredibly frustrating and some of my equipment is still not working properly after spending over $500. I had to bring in one of the units 3 times, resulting in extremely costly cab fares from Brooklyn to Manhattan, they are extremely rough in handling your equipment placing it on its side and sliding it across the counter seems to be one of their trademarks as several other reviews mention here. If you value your expensive audiophile equipment and appreciate detailed repair work be aware that even the head repair person here is not a true expert and read the review written by "XG", he sums it up nicely. My experience was almost exactly the same. read more

I purchased a 1970's Pioneer SA-780 stereo amplifier on eBay for $125. I had some small problems with the unit (the left channel was noticeably quieter and some of the switches and knobs were noisy). After trying to fix the unit myself and leaving it in much worse shape, I searched online for an audio repair shop in the city that specialized in analog or vintage equipment. I dropped off the unit at Analogique along with $75 for the estimate. After about 4 days I called to check, they said the technician was getting to it soon. Called back a few days later, and they told me there were a few components that needed to be replaced, some cold solder joints to be fixed - but that they could fix all of it and restore it to factory specs for about $400. Pretty pricey but to get a vintage unit in good-as-new shape, I went for it. I gave them about a week and half and called back - the guy said they made most of the repairs, but that the technician was having trouble finding some vintage transistors. Using newer models would change the distortion ratio and they wanted to find the right kind. No problem, I said, sounds like it should be worth the wait. Called a week later, they had found the right transistor, but there was still a funny pop when the unit was switched on that they wanted to eliminate - but that it should be easy to fix and they'd call me in a day or two. I called back the end of that week and they said the problem had been solved and the unit was ready to be picked up. The final price was $439 (the estimated $400 plus tax) and I'm at home listening to the unit now. It sounds terrific, much sharper and cleaner than before, and, of course, the left channel's volume problem is fixed. All the repairs are clearly indicated on the repair sheet - they cleaned and lubed all the switches and knobs; checked dc offset, tone control response, phono equalization, and frequency response - a really thorough job. Overall, I'm really happy - it would have been nice to get a better estimate of the turnaround time at the outset (it took a full 5 weeks) and to not have to had call for updates myself. But the work itself seems impeccable. Note that they don't accept credit cards though - cash, cashiers check, or money order. read more

Analogique repaired a Technics 70's receiver couple years ago, one channel was not working and the other channel was noisy. They charged $75 (applied towards repair) for diagnosis and contactme me couple weeks later with a well described report and a proposal. They fixed several cold solder joints, replaced a few off spec transistors, thoroughly cleaned the unit, set Bias and DC offset to spec and aligned the tuner. The total fee was around $250 and the receiver was back to life. Bottom line, honest business, with a brick and mortar shop with professional technicians. I will be coming back again, they seem very knowledgeable and passionate with vintage audio gear. read more

You pay an up front $75 fee which is supposed to be credited to the actual repair once they diagnose what's wrong with the equipment. Problem is they take months to do the diagnosis and if they can't fix it then they say too bad and they keep your money. After two months I was quoted $390 to do the fix and then they decided they couldn't get the parts. So now I'm out $75 and no equipment for 4 months. They also never call you. These folks showed up on schedule to diagnose our defunct Integra amp, removed it and contacted us the next day to advise of our options: repair or replace. We chose their repair. They gave us a loaner to bridge the several day gap (4 stars only because their loaner crapped out after 3 days, but they came back right away with a workable loaner--on Labor Day!). Their final repair took a bit longer than we all thought, but we've had it back a week now and all is well. Not so cheap but not unexpected--the unit was like 10 years old after all, and a new one would have been more expensive. These folks are super-nice. The bad reviews sound like trolls to me. This is the absolute worst place to bring your valued audiophile equipment. Years ago (I am talking the 1980's when I had them compentantly repair a few things) they were the defacto go to place to repair high end audio equipment, today, with the original founder gone, it is a merely living on its reputation of days gone by. When you drop off your gear they charge you a bench fee and insist that it is paid with cash (the first sign that you will have trouble is that they want your cash so that you have no recourse with your bank or credit card company). They refuse to even offer a ballpark idea of what a repair could cost, even if you tell them you understand that they can not be sure without looking first, but if they have really been repairing things since 1974 one would think they could say something like the average cost to repair and amp is X or between X and Y but sometimes as high as Z. They offer no such price range. And the reason why is obvious. They also state a timeframe for providing an estimate that they did not keep. Being patient and waiting for them to call me a week after their stated date to provide and estimate yielded unreturned calls until finally they said they just started looking at it that day and when I called again a few days later (they never called me!) they told me a completely absurd amount of money and no detail as to what the cost was for. Note: I complained via bbb.org at the time and looking today found that the 5 people that complained about them to bbb.org including me are considered 'resolved' because complaintent could not provide sufficient information. I provided tons of information including photos of the amp that they scratched right before my eyes as the clerk dragged the unit which was stored on end off the shelf where they store all of their repair units. Does storing high end audio equipment on its side on a metal shelf sound like a professional operation that cares about your equipment. And does a $650 estimate to repair something that turned out only costing $108 (including sales tax) at a shop on long island where they treated and respected you like a customer. My Harmon Kardon receiver stopped working suddenly ( the multi-room channel would not come on ) . The tech told me he needed to order a replacement piece which took a couple months.......... He charged me $350 and told me the unit was cleaned as well. Turns out , there is a sub-amp in the receiver that just needed to be switched back on . The amp can only be turned on w/ the remote after scrolling to the appropriate menu ----- it's confusing. He should have charged me the $75 fee for estimations and just showed me how to turn it on. read more

I had a problem with an ADCOM amp. It wasn't the amp in the end but the preamp that was the problem. Because the problem I had was not corrected (in terms of fixing the amp with which I didn't have a problem). In the end I paid $60.00 at first for a diagnostic. Where they should have told me then, as they did at the finish, that there wasn't a problem. On top of that, without knowing that there wasn't a real problem, I paid $125.00 plus, as it turns out for no more than cleaning. They never made it clear that everything, in large part, was fine. In the end I paid $185.00 plus ...largely for zilch. read more

I had a great experience of having my Adcom Receiver, PSAudio preamp,Rega Planar turntable, and Monitor Audio speakers repaired by Ernesto at Analogique. The turnaround was 1 week and as I live in the neighborhood Ernesto actually did a house call to help reinstall the components! (House calls are not normal business, but I appreciated it!). He quickly diagnosed the electrical problems with the Adcom unit, found disconnected wiring on the turntable, and was able to locate a used original equipment woofer for the Monitor speakers (they, like the Adcom unit, are no longer manufactured.) The sound is great and I saved thousands of dollars by not replacing this high end system. The cost was very reasonable compared to buying new, and considering how quickly the work was done, I was happily surprised. If you have high end components that have a problem, before replacing, I would highly recommend that you consider Analogique for cost effective repairs. read more

Not sure what all the bad/negative reviews I've read all about online about Analogique. I've been a semi-regular customer for the last 10 years, and every time they've been a pleasure to speak with over the phone (knowing my stereo equipment before I even have to give them my ticket number) and also whenever I've come into their workplace. They stand behind their guaranteed work, as was the case with my last visit when I brought in two pieces of equipment (one a combination amp/CD player I've had for a long time and preferred not to give up on - sentimentally attached - even though it had some serious issues. And so I spent fixing it probably half of what I would have spent on a replacement system). Though I returned home with it and the problem persisted (after a few hours CDs would occasionally skip), I brought it back and next time it was "cured" fully. No attitudes, just an apology. And I understood my stereo piece was touchy, which is why I brought it in there - to get fixed. For someone who prefers to hold onto their equipment, rather than trash it and spend twice as much purchasing a new system or piece of equipment, this is your place. read more
