I love using analog recording equipment. And had this Tascam 4 track recorder for sometime. Was working fine until recently the play button wouldn't release. So I took back cover off and noticed the play belt slipped off the cam. This Tascam Porta 2 was serviced few years back by licensed Tascam company. Inside was clean as a whistle. So now I had no time to repair belt. Looked for repair shop and this store came up. Took unit to store and filled out on work order: Play belt slipped off cam. (See pic) Simple repair you think? Well let me tell you this place will pad the bill as high as possible. With frivolous work charges. When I went to pick up unit. I got a bill for $185 for 1 play belt. Ohh they charged me for Replaced Belts, Rebuilt Motor which was a lie etc. There was nothing wrong with anything except the play belt. On top of that they never called me to say this work needs to be done. Or provide any photos to show what they did. That's what I mean by padding the bill. So I show up to pick up unit and bring my own Tascam OEM power supply, that was original to unit. Plug it in and all is ok. Just wanted to pay and leave. There is one thing I learned in life. Never argue with a fool. Because that makes two fools. So low and behold I take unit to my job and less than an hour later the Tascam unit fails. All this work that was supposed done and it breaks done before I even get it home. Yea right! So now I take it back. And it takes another day. Funny thing is the guy working the counter is like. Hey bring that Tascam oem power supply back and he will trade it for a $3 Chinese power supply. I was born at nite. But it wasn't last nite. What a moron bad enough he is ripping me off for unapproved work. Now he wants me to trade a $30 Tascam oem power supply for a $3 one. What an idiot. Check it out if you enter this store. Enter at your own risk. And be specific about any repairs with the caveat if work goes beyond scope of original quote. That you need to approve it. And ask for proof like photos etc. And as of July 4 th after only using tape deck for two hours. Tape deck failed with same error as when taken into this shop for repair. ((4.25 stars)) located in the Chinatown and Lower East Side convergence known as Dimes Square-- this cool repair shop is parked on Canal Street and is packed with all kinds of electronics from old vintage tvs to old A/V devices like stereos, amps, cameras, video cameras, etc. people come here to get their old or new devices repaired or troubleshot. i have not gotten anything repaired here, but there always seems to be a steady stream of people bring in stuff to be brought back to life. i mostly stop here because they put out a table or two of old (20+ years old or more) print magazines like Life, Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and more. there's no rhyme or reason to the selection of magazines other than being old...picked up a few old magazines that caught my eye, over the last few weeks. spoke to one of the staff here who said that they just put of an assortment because they have a large stock of them. definitely a unique store and how many repair places do you actually see in neighborhoods these days? not many if at all. so if you are looking to revive some dead media device, i'd head here. for me, it's the old print magazines which is totally dead media. I brought in my 5 year old Sonos subwoofer that suddenly stopped powering on. Earlier that day I had called Hi-Tech Electric Service Center, explained the issue, and was told "sure, no problem, bring it in." I even mentioned what I thought the problem was and that I preferred a professional to handle it. After leaving work early and lugging a 35 lb sub about an 8 minute walk to the shop, the person I spoke with asked what was wrong, then basically told me I should just do it myself. He then said he was uncomfortable having his team take it apart and declined the job. This is exactly the kind of thing that should have been communicated over the phone so I didn't waste the time and effort bringing it in. On the positive side, he seemed honest and didn't try to pretend they had skills or comfort level they didn't. He also recommended another shop in Chinatown that "will fix anything," although I checked their reviews and decided not to go that route. In the end I repaired the sub myself successfully. Overall, I appreciate the honesty, but I was frustrated by the lack of clear communication up front that led to an unnecessary trip with a heavy piece of equipment. read more

I brought in the 1991 Mac Classic my wife used growing up. At this point the screen was very dim and the volume very soft, even with everything turned up to max. It was hard to use this way and I worried about it getting even worse. These guys were able to completely restore it! It works like brand new now. The price was great and they got the job done fast. The upside is that this is a magical place that will take on almost any repair - camcorders, minidisc, cassette tape, stereos, cameras, transistor radios, whatever... The rates are reasonable and the owner is a friendly character. The downside is that the work was not thorough if you are looking to do it 100% right. I had a tape deck serviced here, the initial repair was about $140, which was fine with me. When I got the deck back the same mechanical issue was happening after about 5 minutes of playback. I brought it back in and they fixed something else that they missed. Back home, the mechanics were working well, but now the deck sounded quite off: the output was about half of what it should be and somewhat muddy. At that point I decided to send it to more of a hi-fi specialist and they found the problem: the person at Hi-Tech had reconnected the leads from the tape head to the wrong terminals. That cost me another $250 in tech time and shipping. Moral of the story, Hi Tech might be the only shop willing and able to fix what you have--I would go to them with something obscure and not too valuable--but their approach is more down and dirty than meticulous. They will re-fix something for you, but I'd rather rest easy that it is being done correctly the first time. read more

Brought my macbook in here because the logic board was damaged due to liquid, apple quoted me $1300 & said that it would make more sense to get a new one bc of the steep cost. I called this store and they told me to bring it in, they opened it up and gave me a quote of $350 and said it would take about 5 days. I brought in an old, used MiniDV camera that I got off eBay (that worked for a couple days, then stopped working right). I was nervous that older piece of technology like this wouldn't be able to be fixed, but the guy there said he would try his best, but also warning me that it's possible he might not be able to actually repair it 100%. I kept my fingers crossed and came back a week later (it was actually ready a couple days after I dropped it off, but since they aren't open on the weekends, my schedule didn't allow me to go pick up during their regular business hours). It ended up being slightly cheaper than originally quoted (oh, and they're CASH ONLY, so I had to run to an ATM and come back), and when I brought it home to try out, IT WORKED! I brought my father's legendary Fisher 500-C for general servicing. The manager seemed nice at first and said they see Fishers a few times a year and would be comfortable with servicing the power supply. A week later it was ready. The moment I turned it on, the output tubes red-plated and the amp started smoking and nearly burned my house down! They did a terrible job, lied about being able to fix it, and stole my money. I called them right up and they said I shorted the amp with the output cables and they were not responsible. Do not bring your valued pieces of equipment here! They do not have the expertise to fix vintage and the pictures of my amp at home and on their premises prove it! I shipped the amp to a real shop in Chicago who said this lousy shop grounded my bias and B- supply, which meant the amp was sending the maximum current to these tubes. Not to mention, my Telefunken tubes were missing when it was returned. BEWARE of these scam artists; they took my money and did not repair my amp and my valuable tubes are missing. I'll never forget the time I came here with 2 previously functioning film cameras that had started to have some small issues. The man who owns the store had me drop them off, and come back to the shop later, to see if there was anything he could do. After multiple trips and still no results, he told me his diagnosis that they were both useless and beyond repair. He said he would take them both for $30. I was caught off guard by the outcome and tired of all the time I'd invested. I agreed to the $30 and left. It was only as I was walking away that I realized they had fully functioning lenses on them. I had been swindled. They will take advantage of you if they can, so beware. For some reason I had my review saved in drafts for 7 years, LOL, but I figured I may as well post it anyway. (Cut to spring 2018): Several months ago I experienced an agonizing bout of 90s nostalgia for my childhood, and, coupled with this funny return of albums being released on cassette again, went on eBay and purchased a Babysitter's Club Sing-Along Cassette Recorder/Player. It miraculously arrived new in its original box, as if it had been sitting on a shelf unused since 1992. Excitedly, I basked in the glory of entering a time warp, and eagerly began playing some of my newly acquired cassettes. Praise the Lord, this cheap plastic kid toy worked! For about 20 minutes. Enter Hi-Tech Electronic Service, who fixed it for me and probably got a good chuckle out of it too. I ended up moving back to California a few months later, and enjoyed a few more months of listening to cassettes on this thing before it broke again. It was fun while it lasted. LOL. read more

I took my dual tape deck and walkman in to be repaired and had a great convo with Frank. He was friendly and very knowledgeable. He told me to call him in two days to follow up, but he seemed confident that the repairs could be made. When I called back, he said he wasn't able to make the repairs. He charged me $40 for a bench fee, which had already been discussed when I dropped them off. When I brought my items home, I noticed there were a ridiculous amount of scratches on the top and the front that definitely were not there before. In addition, one of the two doors on the tape deck was stuck. I still can't get it open. As for my walkman, whoever opened it and attempted to repair it didn't set the manual switches that control bass boost and other functions back correctly. So now they just slide up and down without clicking into place. One of them doesn't move at all. Don't get me started on all the scratches on the back cover of the walkman. I understand that many people think that if something is unable to be repaired that it can be treated like junk. But when that something doesn't belong to you, that's not your decision to make. Because of this, I'll never go back here again. I was really looking forward to an experience akin to all the five star reviews I'd read on here that prompted me to go here in the first place. read more

I normally do not give out 5 stars but I had a great experience with Hi-Tech. I had a VHS tape stuck in an old VHS player. There are not many places left in NYC that can fix a VHS player. But I was fortunate to find Hi-Tech Electronic Service Center on Google. I initially called to get an estimate, and the woman on the phone indicated that it might cause $100.00 to get the tape out. I had no choice but to go to Hi-Tech. I believe I spoke to the owner of the establishment and he took a look at the problem. He was able to remove the tape, and I asked how much it was going to cost. He told me whatever I wanted to pay. I gave him 20.00 dollars and he told me it was too much. But I said to him that he was very honest and told him to keep the $20.00. It is not easy to find an establishment that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for service. I would come back to Hi-Tech if a need arises in the future. read more

I recently took my vintage Nakamichi SR3A to Hi-Tech Electronics to have the volume and balance function checked because I was getting static and drop offs. Frank and his knowledgeable staff of many, called me back in 4 days and said it's fixed and ready to be picked up. The price was very reasonable. If you are into vintage classic audio equipment like I am, something will eventually need to be repaired. My Nak is from the 80s (40+years old). Hi-Tech technicians are very capable and service is prompt unless they have to order a special part. The place is a museum and tribute to the era when audio equipment was beautiful to look at and to listen to. Over the years, Frank and his team have consistently delivered good work with straight talk and consideration at a fair price when fixing my various devices, whether it's my VCR or even a pocket-sized satellite radio. The care and consideration also come from others on his staff including the nice young lady who assisted me at the counter when I brought my VCR in for repairs recently, something that helps to put at ease the worried mind that a customer has when the equipment that they enjoy using just isn't working and they don't know how big of a job or how expensive it could be to get it fixed. It's been several years since I went to Hi-Tech, but I have two devices sitting here waiting for me to schlep them down there. Several years ago, I found a big expensive looking subwoofer in a trash heap on the street. It had a note taped to it: Doesn't work, not repairable. So, a challenge, right? I went and got my little 2-wheeled cart and brought it home. No detailed manuals were available for it, it was a vintage piece, and German. The speakers themselves were fine (plus what speaker could be unrepairable?). So I disconnected the amp section and brought it to Hi-Tech, which I had found on Craigslist I think, and had called to discuss. About two days later, I got a call - it would be $150 to repair. This was a $4,000 subwoofer originally. So, yes, thank you! Another two days, it was ready to pick up. Brought it home, hooked it up, perfect! It was amazing. So much for "cannot be repaired!" So this shop has my 100% confidence and support. They inspired me to believe that anything can be repaired. read more

This is the single worst experience I've had with a repair. It's tricky since it's an old record player that plays 33s, 45s, and 78s. They put it the wrong needle for 78s, they're missing a part for 45s, and the needle comes down wrong for 33s. To his credit, the owner said to bring it back, and he'll fix it; but after all these mistakes, I can't trust him. I'm disputing his charge with my credit card company and taking it elsewhere--to someone who understands each problem. read more
