One of my favorite finger foods in the whole wide world has to be chicken wings. The Anchor Bar is the birthplace of this famous finger food. A piece of Buffalo, New York can be experienced all the way down in Texas. The wings are cooked to a perfect crunchy consistency and are a good size. The wings I ordered were tossed in the original medium sauce. The sauce was very tasty and had good heat (not too hot). My only complaint would be that the wings were not tossed in enough sauce. I ordered five wings plus french fries which was the perfect amount of food for me. Oh, fyi their blue cheese is AWESOME. Creamy and not pungent. I also ordered one of their specialty drinks that reminded me of a slushie (lemonade something...all I know is that it had vodka and blue caraco ). The restaurant has a cool sports theme going on with TVs on all of the walls as well as in the middle of the restaurant. This would be a great place to watch any sporting event. We had pizza and wings and everything was tasty! The service, however, almost lost us altogether. I kid you not, not a single person acknowledged us for almost 15 minutes after the hostess sat us. The woman who turned out to be our server had been cleaning tables all around us when she happened to catch my eye, at which point she realized she had been ignorant to our arrival. This is a great restaurant/sports bar. It's spacious with a good sized bar, good amount of tables and booths, and outdoor seating. Plenty of TVs inside and outside to watch the games. The service was very good. Our waitress was Brittany. She was awesome. She was informative, attentive, and very nice. The food was delicious. They have plenty on the menu to choose from. Even the kids menu was pretty good. Each of our three kids got something different from their kids menu. Their portions were more than enough. We ordered the buffalo chicken nachos as an appetizer and they were very good. We ordered the 20 wings and they too were very good. They had plenty of meat and cooked just right. My wife and I went to Anchor Bar because we saw the show on Texas Eats. We tried the pepperoni pizza, some buffalo wings with blue cheese, the mac and cheese burger with potato wedges, and two mixed drinks. I liked the chicken wings and blue cheese dressing. The dressing had chunks of blue cheese which was really nice and the wings had good flavor and crunch. However, the pizza was not good, it was much thicker than what I've experienced at other buffalo style pizzerias in town. The flavor of the sauce was rather bland, and there was no real char on the pizza. The Mac and cheese burger while I understand could be hard to pick up and eat, there was no real flavor added to the burger from the Mac and cheese as it was rather bland. I think it was more of an example of culinary skill making the mac & cheese than it was flavor. You would think with a burger with macaroni and cheese that it would have a intense cheese flavor which it did not. The potato wedges included with it were really good. My wife ordered the peachy tea which was supposed to be like a long island iced tea but peachy flavored. It was pretty disgusting and you could not taste any peach... The waitress took it back and apologized and said the bartender put something in there that wasn't right but no peach so they simply added peach to the drink and it was disgustingly sweet so that was a bust. The drink I had was a red,white and blue type drink of shaved ice, but was more like a snowcone of coarse ice which basically made it undrinkable until enough ice melted and you could get some liquid. This is my third visit and will be the last. The wait during our second visit was very slow. We actually had to ask for a server after waiting for too long. Bad part was others getting service before us even though they arrived after us. During todays visit there was a crowd which is expected at 12 on a Sunday. But there were plenty of seats visible and only a few people outside. We were told there was no seating for 2 and after we asked about the patio they told us they have bees. So I guess the people out there were the bees because they seemed fine. We ended up walking out and going to another restaurant. The food here is good but the service is non existent. We checked out this restaurant for the first time today. We had plans on going to Pluckers but didn't want to wait the 55 minutes and I wanted wings. The building is in a little strip right off 1604 and easy to get to. The place was pretty busy on a Friday night and although Yelp didn't put us on the waitlist like I filled out, they were still able to take us right in. The place has many, many tables squished close together, some booths and lots of screens, almost all on sports which is annoying for those of us who don't like just sports. The place is LOUD so you may have a hard time hearing your friends. They sat us at a table/ booth but we had a child with us so I asked if we could grab the open booth that we had passed. The hostess mumbled something about a waiter and walked off with an attitude. We tried the Pizza rolls first. They are made of mozzarella and pepperoni, fried in a wonton wrapper. It's a different way to serve pizza anything but it was alright. You get 4 in an order. The little one got chicken strips and fries. The chicken was definitely fresh and hand breaded, not premade, fried tenders served everywhere else. I was actually surprised an had to sneak a bite. They were good, just a little bland. I am a Wing fanatic. I love chicken wings and have worked in a restaurant where we made them. I know good wings when I have them. I'm also from the city where the most popular wing franchise is from. I'm no newbie to the delectable dish of chicken parts. I ordered the 24 count of wings. You can either order a 10 count for $12 or a 20 count for $24 and you have to pay $0.25 to have two different flavors, which doesn't make sense. You could just put in two orders of 10 wings and not have to worry about paying for additional sauce. If I'm ordering 20 wings, I should get two flavors without penalty. We also ordered potatoes wedges, Philly cheesesteak and fries. Our waitress was nice but very inattentive. We often ran out of drinks or she would forget something like straws or the fries. It took forever to get refills. I ordered my bone-in wings extra crispy, half bbq and half mild. They came out not very crispy but with a good portion of bbq sauce on them-just how I like it. However, the mild wings came out looking naked. They didn't appear to have any sauce on them. Whatever was put on them, slipped off into a puddle underneath. They have ZERO flavor. I even asked for a side of sauce to dip them in and it didnt really add much flavor at all . The bourbon bbq were good. Not spicy and had decent flavor but tasted like the sauce found in the grocery isle. My potato wedges were great and tasty. The loaded fries were good but the cheesesteak was bland according to my spouse. When it came out, it didn't look appetizing to me so I didn't try it. It was nothing like cheesesteaks anywhere else. The prices are high for what you get. $24 for 20 mediocre wings is too much. They are normal in size and nothing extraordinary about them to warrant that price. My spouse's side of loaded fries was not worth the price either since the portion was so small. I still don't know why we were charged to split the sauce on our order if we ordered 20 wings but if we ordered two separate plates of 10 and 10, it'd be a quarter cheaper. Our waitress said "well, it's only a quarter", which is besides the point. I can handle a quarter but if you are going to nickel and dime customers and insult our intelligence and math education, I may just bite back. Overall, this place is just okay. We went because the wait was low, which wasn't even accurate on yelp, AND because it wasn't too far. I also looked at the reviews and thought it sounded good. There was nothing spectacular to make me go back. The overpriced food, poor service and the close proximity to those dining next to you is a turnoff. I'll pass on this place. read more
