I never knew what a difference a name makes. This is NOT Cardoon, so please disregard my stellar review of that restaurant. On Saturday, September 26, 2020, I hosted a dinner for 8 at this re-tooled seafood joint. The restaurant has a large gravel parking lot which was filled to capacity so I found parking a few blocks away. Before I get to the annoyance of the evening, I need to mention two others. Although I made my reservation a month earlier, the person answering the phone when I tried to confirm my reservation claimed to have no record of it. She agreed to honor my indoor reservation WITH CONDITIONS. She would have to split up our group into two tables of 4, citing some incorrect COVID-19 rule. Upon arrival, however, one of the more vocal members of my group arrived early and insisted that our original group of 8 sit together. The restaurant agreed. This shouldn't have happened. Strike one! Next.....I order the Steamer app. Another member of our party orders it too. The waiter says they are out of steamers and puts the plate of steamers in front of me. Big boy that I am, I give it to my dining companion (who later said they weren't very good). After some time passes, the same waiter tells me my steamers are almost ready. I tell him I do not want them. Strike two! Strike 3: A person in my group orders the Chicken Panini and, after taking a few bites, says she feels sick and that the chicken was not cooked totally. She runs off to the restroom. She explains the situation to the waitress and another waitress says that the chicken is good. The first waitress gives my dining companion a lecture on the etiology of food poisoning, basically calling my dining companion a liar in not so many words. While I do not agree that the customer is always right, setting down a litigation position against a diner is not the way to roll. As to the food, I also got complaints about the Octopus and Skirt Steak being "tough". A diner described the Salmon as "good". My Raw Oysters were fresh and tasty. I enjoyed my Wedge Salad and Baked Potato. BOTTOM LINE: Cardoon it ain't. read more

Will be updating based on second experience. Rating this 5 stars as I have received excellent customer service from the owner Stephen. First experience below but will be updated. We had come here on a Friday night to sit outside and have dinner, around 8:45pm. They had asked us to sit inside so they could get our table ready, and so we did just that. We did not want to order anything at the bar, so we were just hanging out until the bartender said he would get us a drink "on him" which he said about three times. And by the end of our dinner it was on the bill which was a little odd. We had ordered hummus, octopus, scallops and the short ribs. I will say, the octopus and the short ribs were pretty good. Especially the ribs. If I were to go back I would definitely get them again as they pretty much fell off the bone. The server was a nice girl. It seemed as though she may have been new. When she dropped the bill off to us, there was a band-aid on the bill and we were a little taken back by that. We had told the waitress and showed her the bandaid - she said that someone had just broken a glass in the back. She apologized but didn't really do much to make the situation better. I will say that was pretty gross, especially when you're trying to finish up your meal and wine. I'm a little on the fence if I'd return here. The atmosphere was very nice and I especially liked that it was on the bay with boats driving back and forth. (And a few nice looking ones at that) but the bandaid, and saying drinks are "on the bartender" when they weren't, were a little off putting. read more

Came here on Saturday. Had a reservation for two was seated no problem. Order a moscow mule for myself and the appetizer calamari for the table. The drink lacked any punch and they used crushed ice which quickly watered down the drink. The calamari was all fried breading with no flavor or spice. We ordered our entrees and waited over an hour. Eventually the waitress offered me a free drink which i declined since the first one was so unenjoyable. The owner came over and apologized and gave us 20% of the bill. At this point we had been here for over an hour and a half and just asked for the food to go. Still took them another 20 minutes for them to get it out to us. My fiancee tried get Branzino when we got home and she said it was over cooked and easily the worst Branzino she's ever had. I come here often and it never fails. The atmosphere is absolutely lovely and all the food is absolutely tasty. I love how the poke bowl comes in an edible wonton "shell" and I also recommend the crab stuffed fish. The service is also lovely. The only reason why I deducted a star is because the menu listed online and the menu served at the restaurant do not match up completely. If you've been to anchor down, you'll love it's friendly Mediterranean half sister. But, how do you find her? Cardoon is not exactly located on a main road. Make your way to seaman's neck road in Seaford. Go south, then left, the south again on South Seaman's neck road and allll the way down, you'll meet Cardoon, nestled right up against a lonely park and dock in a residential area. The interior was soft, warm and inviting with a ceiling slightly higher than Anchor down. The menu is Greek inspired with grilled octopus, lamb, souvlaki and an assortment of fish to tempt you. The arctic char is a rare menu find on Long Island, but I ended up with a visually appealing olive crusted tuna in front of me. Not only was the chef/sous-chef's plating so fantastic --- my medium rare tuna was an absolutely beautiful piece of fish. If they had a "Miss Atlantic 2018" contest that little tuna would win the crown, hands down! The olive crust was subtle but flavorful and the lemon egg avogolemono(ish) base was inviting to dip the fish in. It was definitely a creative dish, and a welcome change to the typical sesame crusted wasabi aioli tuna you get everywhere else. I normally don't mind collard greens but they picked up a fishy taste sitting under the tuna. It was reminiscent of wet seaweed. I think that was the first time I didn't finish all my vegetables (as an adult)! Minus that one little thing, it was very enjoyable. The cornish hen had a flavorful char that accented the delightful Mediterranean spice. It, too, was plated carefully. Even the pita on the dish tasted like it was lightly charred with care. It was perfect compliment to the chunky tzatziki and light tabouleh salad. Our busy waiter was working his behind off last night and forgot to give us the drink menu. I took a shot in the dark with a request for a glass of pinot noir. Whatever it was, it should probably not be restocked. At first sip, it was light bodied and fell flat on it's face. Once it warmed up, it was even worse tasting. At $11 a glass, it's worth avoiding. I'm looking forward to coming back when it's not 16(!) degrees outside to enjoy the much fawned over canal-facing deck with a mixed drink in hand. read more

Picked this place because it was central to a group of friends, and that it was on the water. Many pros and only one con. First off, the food was delicious! I had grilled Branzino with lemon and summer veggies. It was the first time having this fish and it's now my new favorite. Others had the blackened swordfish over Cajun rice (with sausage and shrimp), seared wasabi tuna with noodles, and a salad & lobster bisque. I think if it weren't bad manners, we'd all be licking our plates. Second Pro is the ambience...it was practically perfect. It's a quiet dead end street, and small enough to be quaint. The service was good also. Now for the con. When I called to make reservations I specifically mentioned that we had a wheelchair in our party. When we all met in the parking lot it was all gravel and not one designated handicap spot in the entire lot. My friend has. A van with a ramp and had to finagle a spot so he could get out of the van and not have far to get to the entrance. I'm this day and age, I would think every establishment would have designated handicap parking. Aside from this, we all agreed it was a great choice and would all go back. read more

The food is mediocre. It's a gamble, things can be overcooked or undercooked. The service from the time your order is taken is practically non existent. You have to call someone over for a refill or water. No plates with appetizers you have to ask for those too when you get them they rudely drop them on the table and are still wet. You even have to ask for more napkins since they use paper and assume one is enough per person for an entire meal. We haven't been here in years but gave it a shot twice now to see if things are better. Unfortunately it was not I can't ever see us having a reason to go back. We haven't been to the one in Merrick in a while and after this experience we won't take the chance with it. read more

I am a big fan of Anchor Down, the other restaurant owned by Stephen & Jennifer Rosenbluth. After returning from Greece I was excited to try their new Mediterranean waterfront location and I must say this is probably as close you will get to Greek (or Mediterranean) seaside dining on Long Island. It is evident from the dishes that Chef Stephen (CORRECTION Chef is Jason DeLeo - see owner's comment. I will add that EVERYONE here was excited about the food!) is a guy who loves to eat and he serves up dishes for people that love to as well. Although at first glance the menu may seem slightly pricey, there is tremendous value for the money with large, delicious portions. The watermelon and heirloom tomato salad with large chunks of both along with perfectly dressed arugula and feta cheese was fantastic. The tomatoes lightly grilled to bring out even more flavor. The waitress has the salad split when we said we were sharing. We ordered dishes with the intent of sharing (Greek taverna style) and it worked perfectly. The crispy baby artichokes were perfectly lightly fried chokes topped with shaved parmesan, lemon zest and a ramp/pesto aioli you would like to bathe in (we asked for more). The grilled octopus listed as an app can be a meal in itself - tender, large portion of octopus with confit fingerling potatoes, spanish chorizo, mache, frisée, roasted fennel, pickled shallots, smoked almond romesco. This was more like a pikilia, an assortment of appetizers - so good and satisfying. I expected the Summer Cod Pita to be served gyro/souvlaki style wrapped in a pita, but it was sandwich style with the pita cut in half. Broiled atlantic cod, arugula, fennel, crispy lemon, herb mayo - the fish so tender and flaky, crispy lemon was actually fried thin slices of coated lemons. You could eat this as a sandwich but it so juicy better with knife and fork. Incredible seasoned fries with this. We were so deliriously stuffed after our summer Sunday lunch we couldn't fit in dessert, but we so wanted to. The service from McKenzie was excellent! She was so friendly and accommodating. The cocktail/wine and beer selection is very good - we liked the Sauvignon blanc and rose by the glass. I believe this has just become my new favorite Long Island restaurant. This place needs an overhaul (a manager?) in many ways. 6:30 reservation for 6 on a Saturday night and we were seated within a reasonable time frame. Outdoor seating on the canal (which means - especially at dusk - riddled with bugs - be warned) with five outdoor chairs available and one straight back indoor chair so one in our party was a few inches higher and quite uncomfortable. When we asked for it to be changed, one of the wait staff (short gray haired woman) answered obnoxiously that one of the others at the table could switch. Uhhhh. That should have been our cue to leave but alas ... got worse. Wait service was friendly but erratic, absent, slow -- you get the picture. Bus service (who told us there were no water glasses available, no lids for to go tins, etc) needs training and supervision. But the real issue - the food. Higher priced and disappointing all around. Frozen rolls served at start. Over sauced ribs, dried out fish (in fish and chips), open faced steak sandwich was wet slop, piece of charred octopus (special) that was as tough as a tire .... When we stepped in the host was busy on the phone and asked us to just stand there and wait instead if allowing us to walk up to the tables to settle down. Then the waitress took forever to come by to get our drink order ( there were only 3 other tables but are already served and eating) then took forever again to get our food orders. Then took forever to bring up our meals. Not to mention the waitress and server were no where near friendly or even average serving standards. The food came looks good but was disappointing. The seafoods were not fresh ( lobster roll & shrimp cocktail). Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. The service is ridiculously slow, and not exactly the nicest. When I got up to go to the bar to check on our food, I was told it was in the kitchen. Waited over an hour for our food, no one filled up waters, we needed napkins. Onto the food: it was tasty, but I know they can do better. The buratta app was descent - sounded better than it tasted. It was canned peaches, not fresh. My salmon entree was in a burre blanc sauce. While the fish tasted great, it was swimming in a platter of oil/butter, not a sauce. The fries are great. My kids had a burger and steak- both tasted great but the sauce was meh. Def will not be back here! read more

Perhaps it was a little over dusted with flour which gave the dish a slight gumminess. My wife had blackened mahi-mahi which was just ok. Oh how I wanted to love it here. We used to go often when it was Cardoon. We've been to Anchor Down in Merrick several times and enjoy the food. This did not hold a candle to either place. We were looking to sit outside and have a nice meal. First, the outside was beyond dingy. The service was ok. It was a Thursday at 2. I think there were more tables than expected because there seemed to be only one waitress on. She seemed to be a bit in the weeds. We ordered the 1) wedge salad: Not good. Was lacking everything except for lettuce. 2) calamari: not good. The breading was nice and light, but the calamari itself was tough and lacking flavor. 3) Fish tacos: decent. 4) crab cake: decent. We have had this at the Merrick location and they were the same quality. Again...I REALLY wanted to like this place so that it could be a go to. I had a very enjoyable dinner here whilst spending quality time with my family members. We came in and were seated immediately. Our server, Megan, was excellent. She frequently checked in with us and made enjoyable conversation with the time we had. For an appetizer we had the Loaded Dockside Fries. They were served quickly and tasted delicious. My meal personally was simple and scrumptious, the Dockside Burger. Cooked how I wanted and came with fries, (I love their fries). We came here last month for dinner with our parents and I was blown away . Sitting on our table being able to look over at the dock with boats and the sunshine just beaming down at us it was really special. The ambiance alone wasn't the best part the food was definitely very good from the drinks to the appetizers especially the mussels in the white wine sauce and there calamari were really really good. And our main course was the best part from some of us getting steaks and others getting chicken all around the food was top notch. I would 100 percent recommend this place to anyone who's local enough or wouldn't mind a small drive for a good meal . Went in for dinner and the only two good things I could say about this place was the service and the view. Other than that the drinks were never the same and the food was mediocre. Our waitress was Karen and she was outstanding! She made our first margaritas at the bar while we waited for our table which were on point. After that who ever made them definitely was not consistent. We ordered the steamers which were probably the best out of the whole meal. Then I got the tuna which was very bland and soggy. My wife got the steak which really had no flavor and her "truffle" fries had no truffle or cheese on them. For the amount of people there on a Wednesday you would think the food was outstanding.
