Over the weekend I started to repair an old clock that needed a small neon bulb. A couple of places I call had either no idea what I was talking about or said "we don't have anything like that". What I needed was an electronics store. I did a Google search and came up with Anchor. They are located fairly close to me so I gave them a call. They said they had it. I went over to a store that for the past ten years that I'd lived in this area had no idea existed. I opened the door and it was just like taking a step back in time. The place itself is not very big but everything is organized and easily accessible. I went over to the counter and explained what I was looking for. They showed me where the bulbs were plus a bucket of miscellaneous ones that hadn't made it to the shelf yet. I found what I needed and paid them. I watched as they hand wrote my receipt. This place is totally old school and they're likely the last ones around like this. The only negative is that they aren't open on weekends. If you're a hobbyist and need electronic components that no one else has give these guys a visit. read more

Nowadays it is virtually impossible to find electronic components without ordering online. Anchoe has a brick and mortar (actually a concrete and steel) showroom with open stock of all sorts of electronic components. I needed a replacement knob for a potentiometer. Recently, I needed an electronic part and discovered this store--the last of its kind in the Bay Area. Walking in was a bittersweet experience; the nostalgia was strong, but it was sad to see how small this last remaining store is now. Ever since Frye's shutdown, I have been looking for an electronics store where you can buy individual components, but man oh man, that has been impossible! The worst part about this is that it wasn't showing up on Google and I never saw it. I mean, I typed in "Electronics" and it wasn't showing... what the heckers?! It's in the freaking name! Anyway, they have a super massive selection and it is awesome!! Aight, if you've ever been inside of Frye's, you wouldn't wonder for a second why they went out o business. I just can't believe this kind of store still exists. Before frys was close to my home and they had all kinds of different small parts. But at that time I never had the needs. After frys was gone I had to buy those parts on ebay, where I had to buy 10 pcs a pack, and all remaining got lost here and there after repair, not to mention I had to wait a week or so to receive the parts. So last week my garage door opener stopped working, I was thinking it was the big capacitor's issue, so I bought a new one from Amazon, nothing improved. I took off the logic board, was thinking to buy a repair kit from ebay, or send the board to ebay seller to repair. Both take very long time, and there is no guarantee they can fix it. I tried to debug by myself, and figured out all I need is probably just a small capacitor. Then I found this local store, it carries everything! I don't know how they make profits, but thanks to them, it was only 25 cents, got my garage door opener fixed! The contractor said $300 to fix, but what if they can't fix, I'm sure they will ask me to replace the board, the motor, and everything. That's a big value I saved! Anchor is a real gem and saved my hide more than I can count. If I was a religious person, I may say I even owe them a Wookiee life debt. I've spent thousands here but they've delivered millions in value. No really. Organization is impeccable, everything is easily findable, and service is prompt. The only store in Silicon Valley that comes close to stocking a wide variety of useful electronic components and accessories for both hobbyist and work related projects. You can replace that soldering iron tip that just went out or get your bill of material filled, though they may not carry every part you need (necessitating a Digi-Key order), but with their large selection of surface mount parts, you usually can find a substitute that will work in a pinch.
