We had a wedding rehearsal dinner here last month for about 30 people. The wait staff was very attentive and accommodating, the view was lovely, the food was delicious, the ambiance was quite lovely. We made a reservation for 9:30, late but it was barely dark and we had a full day. It took 20 minutes for a server to talk to us and she said they just gave her the table, didn't seem thrilled. This past Sunday we had dinner at Andiamo's and had a most enjoyable experience!! We were heading to the Fox after our dinner and the staff was exceptional! Our server Jason was attentive and ensured that we would make our show on time. The manager Hussein attended to us as well to make sure our dining experience was going well and arranged for a shuttle to take us to the show. There were so many kindnesses extended to us for our evening by the staff that I had to do a shoutout! This place is a great, easy spot to check out when you're at a conference (like me). Do yourself and your part my a solid and ask for Jen's section. I came here last night for a conference and was luckily sat with Jen. She did not steer us wrong. She knew the menu, specials, and the drink menus off the top of her head and helped us pick stellar dinner options that suited each of us. First challenge was trying to get into the restaurant. In years past, there were valets down on Atwater street by the promenade, but none to be found this time. So we parked in a nearby garage and walked to the riverfront entrance. All doors were locked. No signs or direction on how to actually get into the restaurant. We had to walk (with two small kids) back up the stairs and go through Joe Muer, asking for directions and somewhat lost. Not convenient and not well-documented for people who aren't on the Riverfront every week. We were seated outside the restaurant, in the grand hallway of the hotel entrance. The view of Windsor was great. But it was loud and echoey, and felt kind of like being stuck in a warehouse. At least it cleared our conscience when our kids were making a bit of noise? But for a $240 meal, being stuck in a hallway chamber outside the restaurant with exotic views of the Marriott check-in desk feels a bit like a bait-and-switch. We started with calamari and mushrooms with beef tips. The calamari was excellent! The mushrooms were good, and beef tips were nice and tender. I would order either appetizer again, although for a $10 add-on, I felt like there wasn't much in the way of tenderloin tips in the dish. The kids split an order of penne Bolognese with an extra cup of the chicken soup. The soup was great, and the pasta was a healthy portion to be split between a 6 and 4 year old. I know a lack of a kids menu is supposed to be a subtle hint that a restaurant is not really kid-friendly, but they didn't feel unwelcome. I had a filet with add-ons of blackened shrimp and scallops. The food was fantastic, although two medium-sized scallops for $15 and two large shrimp for another $15 doesn't seem to have the value I'd hoped. The mushroom covered in some kind of special butter was an amazing side that really added to everything I ate, including the asparagus that was otherwise somewhat bland (needed some salt). It was a delicious $75 plate. Our waitress was fun and nice and had a great attitude, but the service itself was not great. We ordered water to drink and asked the server to check back for our drink order once the kids had their drinks. She was gone a long time, then dropped off our appetizers, then said she'd be right back for our drink order (we wanted some sangria), then she was gone about 15 minutes. We finished our two appetizers and then sat for a long while with no food at the table (and, catastrophically, without even having ordered our sangria yet!) before our dinner showed up. It showed up lukewarm. Not sure if that's the fault of the server or the kitchen, but either way, it reflects poorly on the restaurant. This was a good meal and the flavors were on point, but the spotty service, the seating in a loud echoey hallway, and the price point for some of the items was a bit off to justify a "wow experience" rating. I have a solid 10-20 places on my list to return to in Detroit before I think I can justify putting Andiamo back in the rotation. read more

Wow, delicious. I'd rank it up there with San Diego's Buona Forchetta, but a tad lower. Our server was Eric and he was phenomenal. He is a law student and was very attentive to our dining needs. We mostly ordered pastas and one of us ordered the Shrimp Salad. The House Andiamo (Pesto & Cream) Sauce and Linguine Pasta I ordered was really good. The sauce perfect and noodles cooked well. I had the signature homemade meatball and also chicken added to my entree. Both were delicious and tasted like Authentic Italian. Wine was also super delicious. We chose their house red and it was divine. Dessert was caramel cheesecake for me. Others had the tuxedo cake, which I understand was super rich and yummy. Came to Detroit on a work trip not expecting much, due to all the stories I hear. My colleague and I got hungry and decided on coming here for a late lunch. And what a grand lunch it was! For starters, I had the house salad. Who ever knew salad could be so delicious. The dressing was on point along with all of the tastey ingredients in it. Loved the bread basket that came complimentary with the meal as well. For my main dish, I was craving seafood and ordered the Frutti de Mare. It was pasta mixed with a smorgasborg of mussels, scallops, calamari in a nice light sauce, topped with fresh parmesan. It was delightful. Keep in mind that the portion is very large. Good enough for 2. I was sad that i couldnt take my leftovers home because we still had hours of driving left to go for the day and didnt want the seafood going bad in the car. They also have an extensive wine list to go with your pasta. Our server was amazing. She was very detailed on her explanations and recommendations and knew her stuff. She was always near by making sure we had what we needed. The view from the restaurant was also nice. It was right on the lake (or river??) and complimented the nice ambiance already found inside the restaurant. I would definitely come here again. I entertained a friend from overseas at Andiamo Riverfront. The location was supreme and that's what you pay for. We were seated immediately on a reservation. Our request for outside dining was accommodated. A nice mild night and a beautiful view of the Detroit River would make the ambiance perfect. Excellent service from start to finish was also nice. But the food, prices and noise detracted from the experience. Starters begin at $16. The selection was limited. I had stuffed clams which was a meal in itself for $17. My friend had Calamari Friti ($19). Both were served hot and tasted quite nice, but when you have an appetizer as big as they served, there is little room for dinner, which itself comes with a salad or soup. The main meal selections are plentiful, but not particularly inspiring. This isn't "fine Italian cuisine" that one might find in Italy. I departed from my norm of ordering a salad and instead ordered the cheesy white onion soup. It arrived with a congealed skin in top as if it had been sitting around a while. It was warm but not hot. The soup was a creamy but grainy consistency that indicated the flour used to thicken it had not emulsified. It was heavy but not a tasty soup. My friend had a Caesar Salad, which looked good. For the main course I ordered duck ($40), which I expected in the summer season to be duck breast sliced and served medium rare. Instead I got a half a roasted duck on top of a bed of wild rice and mushrooms and a side of a orange/mustard dip. Meh. The rice was delicious but the duck was ho hum. The sauce was overpowering sour. It was a heavy meal more suited to late fall than mid summer. Once again, way too much food and only half got eaten. My friend ordered Ravioli ($32) stuffed with mushroom. How boring can you get?! The wine list is extensive with plenty of open bottles. But the cheapest glass was $13 with bottles starting in the $65 range and up into the hundreds. Finally the dessert tray came by and it looked appetizing. There were probably a dozen items. I would have loved to have finished my meal with a creme brûlée or a tiramisu or even a cannoli. But they had fed me too much. We both passed on the dessert. The meal came to $168 for two, plus a $32 tip for a total of $200. That is crazy expensive for mediocre food. Bottom line: it is one of the best locations to sit at and have a water view while dining. But the food was mediocre at best. And the prices were borderline predatory. If the management looks at this review, I would recommend a few changes: 1) Smaller portions and proportionally smaller prices. If you want to sell dessert, don't overload diners with huge portions with their main meal. (You wonder why we have so many obese people in this country) Not everybody who would like to dine downtown is on a corporate entertainment budget. And a 4500 calorie meal is unhealthy. 2) Find a new Executive Chef to bring a more compelling menu. Lighten up man. Or send your current guy on a trip to Italy to learn some new ideas and techniques. The menu needs a full makeover. Lighter options and seasonal items would be nice. Things like Prociuto Melone, Caprese Mozzarella di Bufala, Buschetta di Pomadoro, Calamari alla Griglia, Spaghetti Olio e Oglio, grilled Duck Breast, Pizza di Stagione, Sardine alla Griglia or Ceviche Mediterraneo to name a few. 3) Work with the city to restrict noise in front to the sidewalk dining areas. The constant din from many severely loud motorbikes, hot rods and HipHop-blaring cars truly detracts from the ambiance of the waterfront view. It would be great if the road was closed to traffic in the summer when people would like to dine in peace. read more

I ordered the Tortellini alla Panna and it was delicious! The dish was very savory and had the perfect amount of sauce and mushrooms (my favorite!). I paired it with their sweet Moscato wine, which really brought out the flavor of the filling. The staff were polite, efficient, and knowledgeable. The restaurant appeared very classy. I felt comfortable being there with my group of co-workers but it definitely had a more "business casual" ambiance and I would not go there in jeans and a t-shirt. The location was perfect for me since I stayed in the Renaissance hotel above the restaurant in the same building. It is great if you do not want to roam the streets of Detroit and risk getting lost. read more

On a recent trip to Detroit, I brought my dad to Andiamo accompanied by my partner and friend. Our waiter, I believe his name was Luigi, possibly Jordan, was excellent. He thoroughly explained each menu item and was attentive to our needs. We started our meal with the calamari. It was divine. I ordered Frutti Di Mare / Fruits of The Sea Pasta but with olive oil and garlic instead of the traditional tomato based sauce. My friend ordered the traditional entree, in which I did try the sauce, it was very tasty as well. My partner ordered steak. It was heavenly. My father, ordered soup, salad and gnocchi. I went here after going to a friends wedding in Detroit. I was all dressed up with no place to go. I have always wanted to try out the Andiamos downtown. There is no valet parking and you have to park you own vehicle. There is a few parking garages across the street from the entrance. It is pretty convenient parking. Just plan on paying an average of $12. As I entered the restaurant the guard took our temperature and we had to sanitize our hands. Masks were also required. You had to go down the escalator to the restaurant. We were greeted quickly. I was asked if we had reservations. We were told we could be seated but there would be another party coming with reservations in about an hour and a half. That was acceptable to me. I would recommend reservations to this place. We were seated with a view of the water which was a plus. There is also outdoor seating but it was a little chilly on this day. The waiter told us his recommendations. I ordered the seafood pasta with a ceasar salad. My drink of choice was a dirty martini with blue cheese olives. Everyone cannot make a good dirty martini but they did do a great job. Bread and olive oil was placed on our table. The bread was pretty good. You could get full on that alone. The salad was also one of the best ceasar salads I have tasted. My main course arrived directly after finishing the salad. I am a seafood lover so this was great. It had mussels in the shell, 3 large scallops and really large butterfly shrimp on top of pasta. The dish had a light sauce and a really good taste. The scallops and shrimp were not overcooked and they tasted fresh. This was a great seafood pasta salad dish. I was pretty full and grabbed a to go box for some of my meal. It was a pleasant visit with good food. The waiter was also friendly, attentive and helpful. The four stars was due to me putting my hand into some water or liquid when I sat down in the seat. It was like a puddle of water. No huge deal but just made me feel that it was not wiped down properly prior to being seated. Overall a good experience. I will be back in the near future. read more
