Sadly seems like another restaurant that took a hit by Covid. Apparently they used to have much better portions for the price. We paid $8 for a tiny 6 piece roll with the thinnest sliver of salmon, 90% rice. The eel and cucumber tasted great but again was roughly $16 for a small amount. The ramen clearly had come from a pre cooked noodle pack that you can get at any Asian market...I've made these myself at home and knew instantly. Wait staff and owner were very friendly and the fish tasted good. We felt bad that they must've lost a lot of business during Covid/didn't have easy access to raw fish because of supply chains. read more

Great Japanese menu. Food was very good, but they let their liquor license lapse temporarily. Seemed understaffed, and no single person was assigned to our table, so it was 'service by committee' and not the best. Seating was very tight and somewhat cramped, and outdoor seating was not very nice, but they are moving soon so hopefully that gets fixed. read more

Coming from Los Angeles, the sushi here is just about good enough to satisfy your craving. At least everything on the menu isn't centered around the California roll... However, the service was completely subpar! 1. I experienced more than a 45min ridiculous wait, which was infuriating as I looked upon at least three, 4-top tables which were "reserved" though VACANT during our whole wait. 2. When I got my check back, I noticed that all my roll/nigiri orders were $1+ more than the advertised price on the menu. When I asked the waitress and owner, their response was that the menu wasn't updated. OH, OKAY thanks for this lovely surprise and the mandatory 18% gratuity for our party of 5. Understaffed. Food was OK. Absolutely worst customer service I have yet to have in Cincinnati. The uni is Double the price of the one at Miyoshi in Florence Kentucky. The hamachi Kama was half the size of the one at Miyoshi at the same cost. We ordered it as an appetizer, asked about it after we had finished our sushi and was told it was coming out. It wasn't until 30 minutes later that it arrived. For the birthday guy they said they would bring out ice cream. Asked twice, never received it. Absolutely unbelievable. Had to have to sushi chef attempting to remind both servers to attend to us. Yet service was not even performed. this is my third and last time at this establishment. I hope the manager figures out how to fix this problem. I would not recommend anyone come to this restaurant until these things have been addressed. read more

1 star for the quality of food + prices. 1 thank you star to them for removing an item from our bill. Will not return. We waited in line for an hour to eat at this spot after everyone raved that this was the best of the best in Cincy. We sat down and learned that they don't serve alcohol so right away be aware - BYOB. The sushi menu looked legit, however the prices were outrageously high. Ranging from $9-$20+ for a single roll. Since both my dining partners and I are a stickler for quality we thought - hey, who cares, if it's quality it may be worth it. We ordered up one Combination Roll roll that was $17.95 and a standard Philly Roll for $12.95. They were eight pieces in each and my jaw dropped when I saw them come to the table because I thought - is this really the cost for this? Then I tasted it. The tuna did not smell or taste fresh. The salmon in our philly roll was tinnnnny and not high quality as others mention. Then we move onto the noodles. We ask if the portion of the ramen was big and out server assures us it is not. So we order the ramen and the udon. He reccomend a special udon that is not on the menu additional charge of $13.95 instead of the standard $9. Again, valuing quality I go for it. The ramen comes out and it is gigantic. Had we known it was huge we wouldn't have ordered the udon. The ramen was meh. The noodles were not house made. The broth was probably the least flavorful I have had and the "pepper" they recommended was table pepper shaker (not even a grinder) and it did little to enhance the already dull flavor. HUGE disappointment. The udon comes out. Immediately I notice the color of the noodles are almost clear. They look swollen and slimy but I give them a try. The broth was extremely bland. Worse than the ramen. Again the "dry spice" they gave us to try to spice it up was old and did nothing to enhance this dish. I have only ever sent food back twice in my life and both because of a danger-situation something in the food etc. I politely asked the server if the udon noodle dish was as they intended to serve it and he said "let me check with the chef." He comes back and tells me this is how they always serve it. I then ask if the noodles are fresh and he says no they come in a package because they don't have space to make noodles there. So for $13.95 you get prepackaged asian market udon noodles that are blanched so hard they are slimy and sitting in a bland broth with fish cakes and some small chunks of chicken in it. After some back and forth he let me know there was nothing wrong with the noodles and he felt them and they felt fine. He did take them off the bill which was much appreciated. But this dish was inedible. A few things to touch on: You "don't have space to make your own noodles." There are noodle shops in NYC 1/6 of the size of your space that make them in house. In general even if you don't want to offer fresh noodles - fine. Please learn to cook the packaged ones correctly (or perhaps change to a different kind) and do not charge $13.95 for this dish. As for the sushi - be warned that this is extremely overpriced and in my opinion the quality does not rival many other restaurants in the city. Don't even get me started on fresh sushi in other cities compared to here. Thus, I know it's not fair to compare so I won't go into it. I took the 40 minute drive. Waited the hour. Left with a huge bill, a hungry belly, and a very sad experience. I will not be back. read more

Fresh sushi right off 71 in Cincinnati. I enjoyed my lunch but it just didn't knock my socks off. I've only eaten here once and it was fine. I guess that's as much as I can say. I had chef choice sushi lunch. 5 pieces of nigiri with a spicy tuna roll miso soup and a salad. The nigiri choices were pretty safe. Tuna, white tuna, shrimp, mackerel and salmon. Eel would have been nice or maybe scallop or hamachi. The spicy tuna seemed like it had been made ahead. I don't think it was but the rice seemed a little dry. The miso was ok the salad was also ok. I might stop again because it's right off of 71 but I think I will map out some other cincinnati spots first. read more

In a city where too many people seem to think of a quality sushi restaruant as a joint serving "half-price" Americanized "sushi" rolls loaded with the gut-bloating likes of cream cheese, mayo, tempura flakes, and who knows what else, little Ando is one of the few restaurants in town that reminds me of why I loved sushi and sashimi in the first place. It also disproves the notion that you can't get decent sushi in a land-locked place like Ohio. Sweet Jeebus, it's pretty simple: Select the freshest fish reasonably available, store and handle it properly, cut it skillfully, and present it beautifully. When you do that, there's no need to gussy it up with a bunch of distracting filler. Instead, you get just the bright, clean flavors of the sea. Ando has the sushi basics down. Fish is about as fresh as I've had in the Cinci area: some of it goes down with the almost buttery, melt-in-your-mouth perfection that the "half-price" joints can't begin to achieve with their half-priced and sometimes freezer-burned, flavor-deprived fish. Ando is NOT "half price." You'll pay for the quality, but it's worth it. Ando is also a subdued, dignified old-school Japanese restaurant that has a broader Japanese menu, featuring soba, udon, ramen, sukiyaki, various meat dishes, et cetera. (No Thai or Vietnamese culinary invaders here.) There is a nice list of appetizers, and Ando usually has a list of appetizer or sushi specials. (Do yourself a favor and order the grilled mackerel as an app, if it's offered.) Standard Japanese items like gyoza taste freshly made here rather than dumped out of some freezer bag. The couple who own and operate the restaurant, and their staff, are great: warm and welcoming and very helpful. Ando is BYO, and a server (or Mrs. Ando) will quickly appear almost as soon as you are seated with an offer to refrigerate the beverage you have brought. P.S. Ando takes resevations, which might be a good idea on a weekend. P.P.S. I've been sporadically visiting Ando for years. This visit was accompanied by a few coworkers from India who had particular dietary needs. I recommended some form on Donburi (rice bowl) for one coworker, and the Nabeyaki (mountain vegetable) Udon bowl for the other. My choice? What else: Ramen! I love ramen, it's one of the bestest foods EVAR! In this visit I chose to go with the tonkatsu (pork cutlet) ramen which had a pretty decent broth, but not the best tonkatsu broth I've had (Men Tei in Boston, MA.) I ordered some hot tea which the server referred to as Ocha but, tea being my thing, I'd have been truly surprised if I was served Ocha since the "O" honorative designates the "cha' (tea) as special, ceremonial or extremely premium quality. While not bad for a sencha served in any restaurant here in the US, Ocha this was not. Not the restaurants fault, unless he was instructed it was Ocha. All meals were preceded by a small size salad with a typical ginger dressing. Typically tasty, but nothing special there. The noodles themselves had the right taste and they were firmer than expected, but not hard. Usually I expect the noodles to be somewhere between al-dente and mushy. The to this range the noodles are, the more easily the noodles can be slurped down as is traditionally done in Japan. The noodle dish was very tasty, though I did add some Japanese red pepper to satisfy my idiotic need for absolutely everything to have some kick to it. As I usually do I ordered two tamago (cold sweet egg omelette) nigiri. I often use this particular sushi to judge how an establishment treats their ingredients. Tamago should be smooth, solid and with minimal cracking. If the tamago is dry or cracked it has likely been sitting for a while and is not going to be the right texture. Ando was a little difficult to judge on their Tamago. Generally it looks good, and the flavor was good as well. However, their presentation seemed more unique. The tamago is presented as "split" in two atop a smaller than usual mound of rice with both ends of the tamago wrapped in seaweed where it is usually wrapped with a thinner strip of seaweed around the middle simply to hold the omelette to the rice ball underneath. Overall, Ando is worth the visit. The sushi quality is typically good. The ramen has broth near the top of the Cincinnati area options. Both of my coworkers enjoyed their meals as well. One of the three better Japanese restaurants north of the rive, I expect to visit Ando frequently given the "around the corner from the office" location, and I won't regret the visits. But Matsuya this is not. read more

After both meals at Ando, I've buzzed about the experience for days. The service is great, BYOB (save $), and the Nabemono dishes are fantastic. Plus, it's healthy and affordable, so the indulgence isn't something to regret! I've had: Shabu Shabu and Sukiyaki- both Nabemono dishes, which means a gas burner is brought to your table and you cook a platter of food in broth. Both dishes have the same platter of goodies to cook- thinly sliced beef, shitake mushrooms, napa cabbage, onions (green and white), carrots, tofu, fishcakes and noodles (the types vary between the two dishes). Shabu shabu is a clear, simple broth with kelp, and the flavor comes from 2 dipping sauces. Sukiyake has a very flavorful broth (soy sauce, sake, mirin) and no dipping sauces. I really enjoyed both. It took us (2 people) 2 hours to finish the meal. At $27/person, that's not too bad for a great meal and 2 hours of entertainment. Nabemono comes with soup and salad (the ginger dressing is fantastic), but the appetizers are worth trying. I've had: grilled ika (squid). Very cool, charcoal flavor dominates yakame- tuna sashimi over ground yam. The yam has a unique texture and is mixed with soy sauce and wasabi. This style of eating is new to me, but I didn't feel intimidated because the owner comes to the table to explain how to eat/prepare everything. She's great (and has a wonderful voice). This is a highly rated Japanese place, and since DLW and I are fans of Japanese everything, this was a must-try. It's an unassuming location in a strip mall behind a Bob Evans, not visible at all from the main road, and maybe 80 seats inside. Nothing very distinctive about the décor, no paper lanterns or tanuki visible. They also don't serve alcohol, very unusual for a sit-down Japanese place where beer and sake are usually plentiful. Despite all of this, the place was busy on a Friday night when the weather forecast was dire. They offer a couple of prized items in DLW's book, in addition to the usual sushi and rice bowls. Sukiyaki and shabu-shabu are classics, but not easy to find in American Japanese spots. We saw a couple of sukiyaki orders come out of the kitchen, and they looked fabulous but pretty big for two people to put away, so we opted for individual entrees. DLW's go-to is chirashi, and this one was served in a small but beautiful bowl stuffed with goodies. This is just how she likes it, since she never finishes the rice. I went with yakiniku, a new item for me, which turned out to be grilled beef with scallions in a sauce flavored with garlic and onion, with steamed veggies and a rice bowl on the side. It was quite good, a take on Korean bulgogi I would guess, and a great alternative for diners who may be leery of "ethnic" food but want something besides boring old chicken teriyaki. We came prepared with our own bottle of sake, and they provided cups and a pitcher in an ice bucket with no corkage charge. The desserts were unusual enough that we chose a couple. Persimmon sorbet came with berries and cream. It seemed a bit overchurned, and tasted mostly like cinnamon, but we still liked it. Brown sugar ice cream is a hit on the menu according to our server, and we loved the caramel flavor and stringy texture. Not cheap at $90 for two people (not including alcohol), but a worthwhile splurge. We must come back for sukiyaki. read more

MR says ... Omakase is always a good deal for a meal MRS says... dinner is totally different. It's packed and even if you make reservations, you will still have to wait for a table. Typical wait is 30min for a table but worth all the wait. Ask for the Japanese menu. Server will explain what's on the menu and give you recommendations. Seafood particularly sashimi is a must. Servers still overlook refills and will forget your soup and salad especially if you order several appetizers. Just remember what "extra" that's included with your entree and you'll eat well. read more

Just another 5 star to the list. This place serves truly authentic japanese food, the one and only, in the entire Cincinnati. I usually go there during lunch because that's when they have the best deal. Typically you're looking at around 15 dollars per person including tax, may go up or down depending on what your order. Their dinner is a bit more pricier, I think it's around 20 dollars. I'm a sashimi person, so I always get the sashimi lunch special, the portion is more then enough for me, but when I'm super hungry, I get the steak with sashimi bento box. Essentially there will be five pieces of sashimi plus a 6 or 7 oz teriyaki steak, and on top of that you get to pick one side dish. I got some tuna dish last time. So yeah if you're super hungry and you're feeling like eating a lot of proteins then go for the teriyaki sashimi bento box. If you're feeling adventurous, then you can ask them for their japanese menu. Also their desserts are godly, the daughter of the owner hand made all of them, and I heard they're super good. But I never get a chance to try them cuz I'm usually full after the entree. read more

Double Spicy Tuna. All day everyday. Ando is as legit as it gets. It really is the best place to go for authentic sushi in Cincinnati and I am confident it could compete with sushi places in the bigger cities. From the fish, to the seaweed wrap, down to the rice, they do everything right. High-grade sushi relies heavily on the freshness of the fish but not only that, the quality of the seaweed wrap and rice matters a great deal too. A highly-skilled sushi chef knows to only use short grain rice, and thin, delicate Nori, not the chewy, store-bought kind that gets stuck in your teeth, to complement the fish. Without a shadow of doubt, Ando prepares each and every roll intricately and with mastery. For starters, my non-sushi recommendation is the Ikayaki (I may have misspelled or missed a syllable), which is simply grilled squid. You may choose to have it seasoned with soy sauce or salt. The dish sounds plain but what makes it special is that the squid comes out grilled to perfection and boasting of its natural flavors. For sushi I recommend the Yellowtail with Scallions, and the Super California. And of course you cannot leave this place without sampling the Double Spicy Tuna roll. Yes, it's expensive but it's worth every penny. And skip the soy sauce. (You're welcome) As previous Yelpers have pointed out this is not the place to come for "Americanized sushi." The rolls here are modest and subtle and you will not find one that is drenched in spicy mayo and sweet soy/eel sauce. There is a time and place to ask for extra spicy mayo, just not here or you will be disappointed. Nevertheless, I think the closest you can get to Americanized sushi at Ando is the Philadelphia Roll. Okay wow this is a long ass review but sorry I HAVE to tell you about the dessert. I had the pleasure of trying the mizu mochi or Japanese water cake. It is clear taro with a sweet red bean filling inside and literally looks like a giant dewdrop. It is delicious but it is not your typical dessert so I would only recommend this to the adventurous type. Finally, this place is BYOB. Heck, yes! The place is smaller in size but could accommodate a party of 8 -10 and there is ample parking. They tend to be busier on Friday and Saturday nights so I suggest you come early. The restaurant was in a very unexpected location in a little strip mall behind a Bob Evans, but when I walked in everything was well cleaned! I ordered the Sushi Combo Bento box that came with (my choice) a california roll, pickled deacon root, Japanese pickles, goma ae, chicken teriyaki, steamed white rice, a house salad, and soup. All for $14.95!! No shame here, but I practically ate the whole thing. I left a little bit of rice and a piece of sushi, and I'm just a tiny 20 year old girl! ...But, I have a pit for a stomach. So, if you can't eat as much as me expect some to-go boxes! My mom ordered the Lunch Salmon Teriyaki marinated in teriyaki sauce and grilled over charcoal served with a vegetable medley as well as steamed white rice, a house salad, and soup. All for $10.50! She said it was delicious! Everything was just so delicious, and the people who worked at Ando Japanese Restaurant were so nice making for an all around great experience! Ando was my go-to treat back when I lived in Cincinnati and it's still something I look forward when I come back to visit the city. This restaurant's small and cozy. so be prepared with a reservation during dinner on the weekends or you may be waiting a while for a table. You honestly cannot go wrong with whatever you order on the menu. They've got all your standard Japanese dishes including tonkatsu, ramen, and soba noodles. Their appetizers are a little more adventurous and they've even got a "secret" menu that you can ask for which I highly recommend if you can read Japanese since none of it is in English. Their sushi and sashimi is, hands down, the most fresh and best prepared in the city. Sitting in front of the sushi chef is a great experience as you get to see him effortlessly cut through all the fish. Every once in a while when I'm really starving I like to get the omakase which which translates to "I'll leave it up to you." It's a little less traditional as you do get to choose parts of your dish from a limited amount of choices but it's still atypical from the regular menu and amazing nonetheless. Very disappointed at their sushi. I ordered sushi here for take away. First, their sushi selection is extremely simple, and for a Japanese restaurant it is very disappointing. When you see sushi with creme cheese on the menu and the California roll their main thing, know that this is a very low bar. Great sushi comes in very elaborate rolls, with various ingredients, thinly sliced lemon, toppings, ... but this place is no better than sushi from a supermarket. Once I got the rolls, they were tasteless, absolutely tasteless. The ginger on the side was he best thing in the box. This place needs -5 in rating. Ando is behind Bob Evans in the little strip mall area right off I-71 and Pfieffer Road heading towards Blue Ash. I know this restaurant got good reviews, but I wasn't feeling it all that much, at least not the Sushi, which was my primary interest. The party I was with shared the Tuna, and Sweet Shrimp Nigiri. 2 piece Nigiri isn't enough for me, but the Tuna was good. We also shared the Salmon, Spicy Tuna, and Philadelphia rolls. I also enjoy Salmon rolls, but their Philly roll was lacking. In fact, on most of their rolls the rice wasn't sticky that evening, so I don't know what was going on. It happens though. The servers were nice, the atmosphere was inviting, but my palate wasn't impressed. I'd give them another try though. I was eyeing the Flounder, Scallop, and Super California...so I'll try those next time. Ando is worth a shot. read more

While I've had better sushi and terriyaki, I'm giving Ando 3 stars for their food and an extra star for their service. The sushi's ratio of rice to fish was off. Rolls had a good flavor but seemed like to much rice and not enough fish. Of the 4 different types of sushi we had 2 were ok and 2 were good. BBQ eel was very tasty, as was the fatty tuna sashimi. But the soft shell crab which we usually loved seemed to be lacking. I don't believe there was a whole soft shell crab in the roll and if there was it was the smallest crab they could find. The spicy tuna roll was also a bit disappointing. We also had the beef terriyaki dinner. Flavor was good, but meat wasn't that tender and there was a sparse amount of vegetables. At $24 it wasn't a value. In conclusion find some rolls that hit the mark and come back for the service. I always love when you can tell a place is mom/pop owned and they are interactive with the business. read more

Took my girlfriend here for date night on a Saturday. I've learned to always make reservations in advanced if going on a weekend. Smaller restaurant but the food is consistent and flavorful. The sushi is always very fresh. Miso soup was good but the house salad wasn't anything special. We ordered spicy tuna, futomaki, and the dragon roll-all super yummy. Domo arigato & どうもありがとう Ando is the best Sushi & Sashimi & Japanese place in Cincinnati. It is authentic Japanese place, not an Americanized Japanese place. Even if it is so hard to find a fresh sashimi grade fish in Cincinnati, they have access to really good fishes. Even if this place was 50miles away from my home, I would go at least once in a month. I have to preface my review by saying we only tried a limited portion of the menu while we were there and I plan to go back to sample other items. I had heard great things about Ando and had been meaning to go for quite some time. We came in around 7:30 on a Saturday night without reservations but they were able to seat us at the "bar" which ended up being a great experience for us. We ordered four different rolls between two of us - the Spicy Tuna, The BBQ Eel, Shrimp Tempura and Rainbow. I will admit that these are very basic rolls and not what I would have typically ordered. All of the food was beautifully prepared and the fish was very fresh. The main reason for not giving more stars was due to the eel roll. I found over seven small bones while eating the eel roll. When eating unagi I know it is common to find small bones, however several of the ones in our roll were rather large and prevented me from enjoying the other rolls. I also found the shrimp tempura roll to be very bland. It was not bad by any means but was lacking flavor entirely. I noticed quickly upon ordering our sushi that we missed the mark on what to order here. Many people had the bento box, Nabemono or plates consisting of sashimi and nigiri. I've also heard you have to order the Omakase dinner, which I hope to do next time I visit. As for the service, it was excellent. We brought two bottles of wine which they opened and consistently refilled. Everyone was incredibly friendly and attentive. We really enjoyed speaking with the sushi chef. He was not bothered by all of our questions and provided great suggestions for our next visit. read more

It is hands down the best Japanese restaurant in the city!! My boyfriend and I have been to Ando several times and haven't had a bad thing on the menu and have always received the best service! I'm definitely recommending this restaurant to all my friends and family! read more

I never actually got around to eating here as the waiting area was far to small, the wait list involved signing up on a white board (a fact you expected to divine through the gods of food without instruction from anyone) and in general the staff seemed unhelpful and detached. Since it was so hard to figure out how to get a table I figured I should leave and give fair warning to others. The food looked delicious while I was looking longingly from the waiting area crushed between several other people, but I don't know if it's worth the effort. Maybe try an off peak visit? read more

After moving here recently, I was excited to try some of the sushi restaurants around town. A lot of people online recommended this one, so we went ahead and tried it. I guess you can't really expect much since we are in the Midwest but I just don't see the prices really being worth it...I remember paying $20 for a rainbow roll that was just "okay"...I'm used to paying $12-$15 per specialty roll with it being really tasty. Sashimi was nice but like I said, overpriced for what it is. I would overall just say it was meh. read more
