Stopped by Anh Hong Vietnamese Restaurant and ordered the bun bo hue. As someone visiting from out of town, I have to say this was definitely better than the versions I've had back home. The broth was rich, flavorful, and had a nice level of spice without being overwhelming. The portions were good and the meats were tender, making for a satisfying bowl. The restaurant itself is no-frills, but the food speaks for itself. Overall I'd come back the next time I'm in the area to try some other dishes. Come here for the authentic Vietnamese dishes. The Bun Bo Hue is unreal! The broth is delicious with just the right amount of spiciness without overpowering the flavor. Fully loaded with the meat at a generous portion size. The accompanying herbs are also so fresh and plentiful. I love veggies in my soup, so the more the better for me. The mom and pop restaurant is truly a gem and hospitality is spot on. They treat you like family but giving you the space to enjoy your food. The food comes out fresh, because all made to order. Decided to grab pho for lunch. Read a lot of great reviews on this place. Really great flavor and plenty of meat in the bowl. They don't have fatty brisket which is ok but you can customize your bowl with the cuts of meat that they do have. I overheard someone ordering egg noodles instead of rice noodles. I think I'll try that combo next time. I imagine parking might be hard since it's within chinatown. I just walked as I live in the neighborhood. We always normally Cook Vietnamese food at home but when we are out and about and want Vietnamese food we come here. Came here for a pho fix and this spot did not disappoint! The pho was super tasty, and I really appreciated that they had Thai chili peppers available--I like to mix those with fish sauce and lime to make a dipping sauce for the meats in my pho and for the raw meat served on the side. It hit just right. My girlfriend got the pork chop, and she loved it. Their homemade nuoc mam went perfectly with it--great balance of sweet, salty, and tangy. We also tried the summer rolls, and they were fresh and flavorful. That peanut dipping sauce? Honestly one of the best I've had--so creamy and addicting. Bonus points for being open really early (love that!) and the restaurant itself is nice and cool inside, which made the whole experience even better. Authentic Vietnamese I suppose coz people spoke Vietnamese and the tv had Vietnamese fruit channel on lol, like they're speaking in Vietnamese explaining everything about dragonfruits for one whole hour. I don't think I can even watch that if I understood Vietnamese lol. Anyway the food. The food! We tried their Bun Bo Hue and bun rieu and both were delicious! Savory and with depth. Between the two I liked the Bun Bo Hue a little better but you can't go wrong with either. I was surprised even in their bun rieu they put porks blood and pork knuckle as well, alongside with the Vietnamese ham, soft tofu and of course a lot of fresh herbs which I greatly appreciated. Their egg rolls were delicious too! Good flavor with plenty of herbs and rice noodles. The dipping sauce could use more garlic. The server spoke perfect English so it wouldn't be a problem ordering here without speaking Vietnamese. The food also came out in a timely manner. As for environment, it's an Asian restaurant in Chinatown, so don't expect anything modern modern or sparkling clean, hey but sometimes that's where you gotta go to find good food. When a restaurant is filled with people of the same ethnic background as itself, it's a clear indicator the place is legit! That was the case at Anh Hong--my fourth stop (my third was Pho To Chau, but nothing new. Still good!) in my Pho Quest. The whole place was nearly full when I arrived, and eventually filled up with immediate turnover while I was there, and this was a Monday. All Vietnamese. I'm part French via Vietnam. Does that count? I couldn't say the same for other places. In fact, the other places I've been to were basically empty. Ahn Hong is located along North King Street, near River Street. It's in between Golden River Vietnamese Restaurant and Kieu Vietnamese Restaurant. Just a bit down from Kekaulike Street. I just park at the Chinatown Municipal Parking that you enter from Ala Moana Boulevard. It's all metered parking. Inside was clean and bright. Yes, Combination Pho again! My first sip of the broth, it was clean while rich in flavor with the taste of herbs and spices. The broth was close to one at Pho To Chau. "Is this better??? Better than To Chau??" was what entered my mind after having the broth, and I believe it might be. Every ingredient in the pho was exceedingly fresh. From the bean sprouts, culantro, basil, rare steak, tendon, cilantro, and etc. This is the only place where I could taste the cilantro (I abhor it), and found it acceptable. All the beef was tender and tasty, and prepared very well. Even the beef meatballs tasted better here. Everything was precisely portioned. The noodles were slightly more skinnier, but had a nice firmness and texture. The broth temperature was just right. Slightly extra warm to better cook the raw vegetables. The large size was the perfect amount for me. The saté sauce was very good--a nice balance between spicy and savory. Overall, Ahn Hong might be my favorite now. Not just because there were a lot of Vietnamese eating there, but also the food was just spot on. Everything was very fresh and very well prepared. Inside, the environment looks clean, new, and spacious. There's supposed to be a convenient restroom, but I didn't check it out... Another perk of this restaurant is the complimentary "tea water". It may not sound like much, but on a warm July afternoon, it is refreshing! It's like a watered down barley-ish tea with ice. It's unsweetened and not bitter... Just right! Service was quite good! Dear Daniel had to ask for the little chopped chili peppers that usually come on the side. Other than that, I have no complaints. I ordered the #14 which is BBQ pork and Spring Rolls on vermicelli. It's my "go to" dish because it has some of everything: fresh veggies, fried Spring Rolls, grilled pork, and boiled noodles. That's carbs, fiber, and protein - all in one bowl! How rare it is to have a viet restaurant that serves different noodle soups and every single one is a good. So good that we were there 3 times during our trip and have been telling everyone it's a must stop in Honolulu. Loved the Bun Bo Hue that I have been craving for weeks. This place has the authentic Bun Bo Hue with pig feet and blood pudding. The banana flower condiment was also sooo good. Not many places in the town serve with the banana flower so I am so thankful that they do. The service was nice as well. We were a little skeptical about the tea flavored water because I didn't know if it was because it wasn't washed properly. It was this faint flavor or soy or barley tea so I wasn't too sure. Anh Hong is easily the best Vietnamese restaurant in Chinatown. I'm from the Bay Area so my tastebuds for authentic Vietnamese food is admittedly pretty snobby. My brother and I arrived around 11am on Sunday morning and was greeted by the sweet lady owner. There were other guests situated already so she sat us at a table closest to the door -- being mindful of social distancing us from other diners. I ordered their Bun Rieu (Crab and Tomato soup) and my brother ordered their Bun Bo Hue (Vietnamese Spicy Beef Soup). The soup for both dishes were piping hot when brought out from the kitchen and the appropriate noodles were used for each item (yes, using the "right" noodles are especially important in Vietnamese cooking). The flavors were stellar and as close to "home" as it's going to get while in Oahu. Be sure to ask for all the appropriate condiments so you can bring out all the authentic flavors for each specialty noodle soup. Two and a half stars. Was forced to try another pho place because my favorite one in aiea is somehow closed. Decided to try this one because I had already tried the other pho places around there and didn't care for any around Chinatown area. Eh, walked in and found that a big party had just left. I was seated right away and pleasantly surprised that they served coconut water instead of regular water. Ordered spring rolls, summer rolls and a beef flank and brisket. The appetizers came pretty quickly then the pho came out. To begin with the appetizers were quite different. The summer rolls come with a piece of char siu inside with the shrimp. The rolls were rather tightly wrapped and smaller. The spring rolls were ok. The meat inside had a different taste to it but I enjoyed the fixings that came with it. Lots of basil and cucumber which I always appreciate. The pho on the other hand was a different flavor than I expected and ever tasted. First of all I noticed that they might have cooked some beef in the broth for it's cloudy. I do not like the taste of cooked blood in my broth. I like my broth clear as possible. Secondly I took a bite of a nice piece of beef but it honestly had a strange after taste that I didn't care for at all. I just ate the noodles with the vegetables I put in it but left all the beef and the broth. I always get disappointed when it comes to a different pho taste that I'm used to. It has a sweeter taste to it which I don't care for. However I might be not used to a different style of pho. I am figuring out that probably which place the cook comes from is the way they cook the pho. The taste is different from different parts of Vietnam I am sure. I didn't care for this one but a lot of Vietnamese customers came in speaking the language and seem to be regulars so they're used to that pho. The people are hard working and courteous and the place is rather clean. I just have my own preference but honestly I'm sure others might want to try for a different taste. read more

My s/o and I were craving Vietnamese food and we're glad we found Anh Hong. We were in Chinatown to get a head lei (flower crown) for me and as we were walking around we were drawn to such an amazing scent. We literally followed the scent and found out that it was coming from this restaurant so we decided to try it out. I got brisket pho and my s/o got bun bo hue. This place is seriously one of the best Vietnamese restaurants we've been to. I'm not a runner. Exercising and I are like oil and vinegar, we don't quite mix together. Despite my apprehension about exercise and therefore running, I've had multiple runs to Ahn Hong to make sure that I grab takeout during my lunch break. Despite it being a pretty far spot from my workplace, I'm always happy to take a dash for their food because it's my favorite Vietnamese place on the island! I'm always looking for the holy grail in terms of menu variety and taste, but Ahn Hong is my #1 choice for flavor and dish selection thus far! While it's not uncommon for me to find items too salty, plain and not having any depth, high prices and other disappointments, I've never found anything at Ahn Hong to not be worth it. Instead, it's more likely that I ate elsewhere and wished that I took a run to Ahn Hong for my meal! Having to run to get takeout means that I've rarely enjoyed a sit-down meal here. Although parking is sparse and not the cheapest downtown, you're in for a treat if you dine in. The complimentary flavored water is the perfect thirst quencher since the restaurant is always on the warmer side. I'd also suggest dining in so one can explore the other shops and restaurants in Chinatown. No running needed so long as you remember to feed the meter! I rarely come across Bánh Xèo and had a good laugh to see it marketed as "Vietnamese Pizza." I attempted to order it multiple times but was always told that they were out. It appears that the recent menu change no longer lists it. Looks like I need to run elsewhere if I want a craving for "pizza" the Vietnamese way. My boyfriend ordered himself the Bun Reiu which is not easy to find in Hawaii. I wanted something light so I ordered the bbq shrimp with vermicelli noodle salad. Bun Reiu broth was delicious, my boyfriend devoured the whole bowl. My shrimps were huge and loved the salad and crispy garlic chips in my bowl, the fish sauce it came with was mild which I prefer.
