I have been coming here since 2014. If you are a student, you get access to so much here at the Anteater Rec Center (ARC): rock climbing wall, three full basketball courts, two fitness areas with free weights and machines, a dance studio, indoor running platform, mat space with punching bags (for wrestlers, grapplers, martial artists, etc.), and a perfectly warm outdoor pool. The great thing is that the ARC opens up at 6 am during normal hours, so you can get your work out in super early. It also closes pretty late, for those who like a work out at night. If you are a student at the ARC, I highly recommend trying the group fitness classes or the martial arts classes. Exercise regimen are just easier to maintain with a group, especially if you are just starting. Traditional Jiujitsu is taught by Ray, who is super chill and teaches you the fundamentals of self-defense. The Brazilian Jiujitsu class is taught by Harrison and Cheri, who are both upper belts under blackbelts Coach AJ / Coach Alex who teach at Valhalla Jiujitsu. They are extremely knowledgable, friendly, and know how to motivate a class and keep it fun. read more

The 4 stars are for the great staff! The staff is always kind and respectful. Also the student workers that are there are very knowledgeable about the gym itself. Briana was so kind in taking the time to explain how certain equipment and machines work. She was very patient and helpful to me. The front desk staff are always kind and helpful. It can get busy here at times. Pool is pretty busy on weekends that are sunny. My only complaint is that the lockers are a bit outdated and main lockers can use a bit more tLC. read more

What a great facility with lots of machines to work out on. I love that there is a rock climbing wall within the ARC. I believe climbing on it might have a price, but it also might be free now. Im most interested in checking out what else we can do here. There are cooking classes that are associated with student vs. member fees. The arc during the school year is always crowded, but I love the amount of equipment there is and the number of rooms they have. The only thing is the customer service is incredibly poor. The two times that I have come in and then ask for the workers to set up a badminton net it was obvious that they were reluctant and annoyed. Especially today. I came in today around 1pm and checked in. After coming in, I asked for them to set up a badminton court, and I could tell right away that all the three girls were annoyed. One of the girls that I was directly talking to asked, "Did you check yet" in a rude tone. Which is fair considering I came in and just asked for it right away. But even when telling them that my friend that was already in there checked, they still were annoyed and looked like they couldn't believe me. They only started setting up when another person came by to ask to set up the net. I get that it's just a part time job, but these workers have some attitude doing a job that they signed up for. read more

tl,dr: Great place! Tip: Bring friends if you plan to play badmin here. Likes: + Buncha stuff here! 2 workout rooms + other equipment randomly sprawled throughout the building. 3 indoor bball courts. 3 sound-contained racketball courts. A 10-lane 25yd swimming pool. A couple dance studios and a martial arts dojo, and a rock-climbing wall, but you have to pay extra for classes for those. A backcourt gym that can be altered between volleyball, 3 badmin courts, and soccer. Even a kitchen! + Helpful student staff. When I need help with a machine, they are able to accommodate. + Outdoors, they have an outdoor skating rink that you can play hockey in, some bball courts as well, and a couple fields for soccer and baseball. + Plenty of hand sanitizers and wipes spread throughout the place. + Huge parking structure. Always plenty of parking available. Just don't mind the walk. + They have efficient id scan entry, so you don't have to talk to staff or do much to walk in. Non-likes: - Absentminded student staff. Volleyball setup is at 6:30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays, yet the staff often procrastinates until around 7pm to change the Backcourt Gym, giving the badmin players more time, while taking time away from vball players. After ~2 months of this nonsense, I stopped reminding them. Maybe you should find a better gym closer to home. - Restroom stalls don't have stable shelves, only a slender moving shelf, so you're stuff's liable to drop. Particularly the upstairs men's large restroom stall, I put my bag on it and then it dropped on the ground. I wish they installed a table or counter in there instead. Like, what if you need to put a large sensitive bag down? - I love their rowing machine, but I wish they had more than one. - They have 4 stairmasters, but only 1 is both in great condition and has privacy. - The badmin presence is pretty bigoted around these parts. The players there mainly want to play with their own people. You know which one. As a minority, I end up pretty left out and ignored there. I keep trying to ask to play with them, and those you-know-whos keep making excuses, like "I'm tired" or "I don't wanna play doubles", instead of being upfront, "I don't want to play with you because you are not Chinese and you don't speak Mandarin." After all my pain, I guess the last dwindling thing I could ask for is honesty. At least it's better than Jim Crow era. If the situation was reversed, ofc I would welcome any minority. O whale, good thing my membership expires next month. Good riddance. - As for the Backcourt Gym this summer, they prioritized badmin over the other sports, favoring certain guests over everyone else. read more

This guy is very rude and inconsiderate towards the people that he is not currently training. Though he may be qualified, his attitude towards the Arc students is sub-par and aggressive to say the least. For example, earlier today I saw a student working out on a machine in the right most room. In the middle of their sets, I saw him approach them and seeming to ask how many sets they had left. They motioned to someone else seeming to indicate they were going to used the machine next. He took over and kicked them off the machine entirely!!! I understand that he might have a regimen he has to follow but this isn't the first time he's been rude to people and just unfriendly in general. read more

I love this gym! The weightlifting areas with the newer equipment definitely gets more congested but that's to be expected with any school gym. Wow - it's been 7 years since my last review and I'm still here!! Membership is $336/year for "Young Alumni" = your first two years after graduation. Sadly, it's $420/year for us older alumni lol. Pro-tip: join the Alumni Association for $50 and pay $360 for ARC membership instead. I know you only save $10 but here are some other perks: http://alumni.uci.edu/membership/join.php. Don't chance it with the parking by the way, a lot of my friends who used to park far away (for free) and make the walk .. have been getting tickets so now we all just pay the $1/hour for parking or get the ARC parking only permit! read more

**This is strictly for the cooking classes that are offered at the ARC.** I took a cooking class the other day and it was so fun! Vanessa H., Azya C., Grace C., Joa K., and I heard about the class from Drew M. We were interested in the ravioli class, so we went. You can attend if you are a non-affiliate, alumus, or student. The fee for the class is quite reasonable. The fee for students is just $25! Sur La Table and TSpoons charges WAY more so it was nice to be able to take a class that didn't cost more than the shirt off your back. We were all given aprons (borrowed), recipe cards, and ingredients. We all started off by making the pasta dough and were given tips by Chef Jessica V. She's really informative and her style of instruction reminds me of chefs on the Food Network. Chef Jessica needs her own cooking show! We made 3 different types of raviolis: spinach & cheese with pink sauce, butternut squash with brown butter & sage, and Nutella & banana. It was really fun to make our own pasta dough and roll it out with the pasta rollers. We also assembled all of the raviolis by hand. We made the sauces, boiled the pasta and plated them. Then we cleaned up a bit and were ready for dinner. All were really tasty, but my favorite were the butternut squash raviolis. So yummy, I could eat them all by myself. I kind of wish we were able to have wine with our meal but it's UCI and I imagine there were some underage students in the class as well. His demeanor in the gym is always extremely professional, friendly, and courteous. As a student, I come here more than 5 times a week to workout and get in shape.. that's if I can. The powerlifter kids see themselves as roosters surrounded by hens in a chicken coup. They're Asshole, don't share the equipment and harass people to get off a machine just so they can use it. Alot of the equipment are always broken even though they charge us a fee in our tuition every quarter. It's also always packed, go before 5pm and between 7 and 9pm, otherwise you won't be able to workout. Staff here don't do anything and alot of the students aren't careful. I've had someone carelessly bump into my barbell while I was benchpressing and almost got seriously injured. Staff didn't care and do anything and that person is probably still using the gym carelessly today. But I mean, I want to workout so I choose to come here, I just have to live with it read more

The facility is very nice and clean but the management is extremely bad! While students pay a fee quarterly to be able to use this facility, for team sports like volleyball or out door score, the fields are reserved by other departments or for their clubs who pay extra to reserve. Then students who pay to use these spaces cannot book in advance and are asked to leave the spaces... They claim that during the morning and afternoon students can come in first come first serve basis to use the space but they don't mention that students has to work or go to class during the day and evenings are the times they can exercise... read more

See, the thing with the ARC is, that it was my first gym. I had never done any of that 24 Hour or LA Fitness prior, and that the ARC was the first gym that I had ever done. Hmm. I guess it all started back in freshie year when they had the "Late Night at the ARC" and you got the free drawstring bags. Then I got to do the World Record Attempt at the ARC Fields and I just realized how much I'd be coming here :P There's a lot to do here, and if you are a UCI student, it comes free with tuition. Well. I guess you pay for it with ze tuition hehe. Anyways, when you enter through the first time, you're gonna need to show your Student ID. If you are not a Student, they probably gave you an ID you can type in and hand scan prior. If you don't want to carry your Student ID, you're probably gonna wanna go upstairs and get a hand scan to save time. To your immediate left, you get a rock climbing area that you can use (I think you can use it free for the first time?!). To your front and right is the first training zone area, where they have all the ellipticals, weight racks, cardio, and mats. This area, as of 3/2016, is a no bag zone so you have to put your bag in a cubbie. If you go upstairs, you are going to have classroom studios, an indoor track, and a kitchen way in the back (and some classrooms where you can sneak in and dance!) Maintain the downstairs, and you have 3? full size basketball courts that you can shoot hoops. The other side are the lockers for the men and women, where you have the shower and access to the outdoor pool. Keep walking straight and you will have an equipment checkout area where you can checkout well..equipment and towels. You'll see the 3 racquetball/volleyball courts to oyur right. (Or is it handball? I never knew). The area across from that will be the volleyball courts/ archery area. :D Then that leaves you when a back staircase to the 2nd floor and then the back gym area, where you have more cardio, weights, and mats. See, this gym is huge and has a lot of different areas you can have fun at! I think I went most to the back gym area for cardio and weights, but there were times when I used the hand/racquetball courts to play..whatever that game is that it's called. I don't know how to play, we just hit the ball off the dang walls. This is a great gym to go to and I miss it so much when I am at 24 now, but it's okay. I'm glad I got to utilize it while I could. :) They also have a bunch of classes you can take, some with and without fees. Outside are outdoor basketball courts and a huge grass area for a lot of soccer or flag football games. There is a road that leads you back to VDC/VDCN area. Gym. Is. Great. I really wish my school gym was like this one. I don't go to UCI but I got in because I got sponsored by a UCI student...that and $5 haha. My first impression of this facility: WOW The first thing I saw was the humongous Rock Climbing Wall! I stared at it for the longest time. I went there to play basketball, and I was amazed how big the and neat the place was! 3 full basketball courts next to each other. Right above it, a running track! That is soo cool! Everything is indoors and it includes: 3 basketball courts, track, racquetball courts, volleyball, soccer, gym, class rooms, boxing, rock climbing wall. All the equipment looks pretty nice and well kept. People at the front desk are nice and friendly. By far one of the best gyms I've been to. I hope I can see Kobe next time I come! read more

So I got to go in and tour the place as this was where my boyfriend went to school and we were in the neighborhood so decided to check it out. And we got to go in to this gym after leaving a driver license at the front since we were just walking about and not going to use anything. Signed a form and then started to tour. First thing - this place is humongous! There was a track on the second floor and two sections for weightlifting, another hidden section for either volleyball or soccer and a swimming pool out back. I was so astonished at how many machines were about and how clean the entire place was. The rock climbing wall which you see, apparently you have to pay for its use. Quite a couple rooms for dance classes/fitness classes/martial art classes. If only I was a student again! read more

I love the gym here at school. The equipment here are pretty much up to date and there is a rock climbing wall here- how sick is that?! I have previously been to the gym at another school- UC Berkeley before because my cousin goes there and showed us around when we visited. My god. This gym is definitely better!!!! There was no trash on the floor or those smelly/sweaty air con smell that makes you suffocate while you are working out. There is a huge basketball court, swimming pool, recreational rooms, and etc. They also offer classes like jazz, hip hop, biking and yoga for a small fee if you're a student. :) I recommend doing the yoga class here because it is fun and calms you after a long day at school. I always come in the morning so it does not get too pack in here since everyone is in class. I like the gym here a lot! :) the only downside is you have to pay for parking if you want to drive over here or is a commuter. read more

Whoa! I didn't know people yelped the ARC ... This is the greatest gym ever!! I'm currently a member of LA Fitness, it's good, but not as nice as the ARC. I loved the raised track, 3 levels of bball, lots of new equipment, they pass out towels, big pool, and the big thing is that it's huge, so you don't feel "stuffed". Anyways, I wish I was still a college student, and regret I didn't use it more when I was an Anteater!! ZOT! ZOT! ZOT! Take advantage of the ARC while you are at UCI. It has so much to offer in terms of variety and quality of programs. There is so much to do at the ARC, like dance classes, basketball, rock wall, run on an indoor track. They have intramurals every quarter, the obstacle team building course, cooking classes, personal trainers, and even programs off campus, like full moon paddling. There is a reason why so many people come to the ARC, even if they are not UCI students. This is a great resource, UCI! read more

The Anteater Reaction Center honestly has everything you could even ask for at a gym. They have all the equipment that you need if you need to workout with plenty of equipment to go around. Of course there are busy times between 5 - 7 but even then with a little patience you can get your workout in in no time. Personally I have been a big fan of the ARC basketball courts. I have been coming here since my third year as a student and now that I am an alumni I continue to come back. It provides a lot of competition to improve your game play or even get better. I've also heard that the courts at other gyms do not compare to this one. All in all, this gym probably has the best price for your membership with all that they provide. It has a rock climbing wall as well as lessons. They have schedule time for sports like badminton or volleyball. They even have intramural sports for students and faculty to compete against each other. Along with classes to learn skills such as cooking, the arc has it all! This place is awesome and offers a wide variety of activities. There are so many different types of machines. With two fitness rooms, there's definitely enough of everything to go around. There's also a indoor track upstairs. There are basketball courts and racquetball courts, and during certain times of the day, they can also be converted into volleyball and badminton courts (check on the website for times!). There's dance classes from hip hop to jazz dance to ballroom dancing, martial arts, etc. There's a pool and a HUGE field in the back for outdoor sports. There's rockclimbing (fee to join). You can also join the various sports clubs that are featured. You can get messages here, learn how to cook, etc. etc. Lockers, showers, a smoothie bar. The possibilities are ENDLESS! UCI students just need to swipe their ID card, or they can also register their hand print so they dont even need to bring their ID card! Visitors need to pay a $5 fee, I think. If that isn't enough to convince you how awesome this place is, Kobe Bryant also works out here. At the beginning of every school year during Welcome Week, he shows up during Late Night at the ARC. To UCI students: make the most of your tuition fees and use this place as much as you can! read more

All UCI students (& anyone living in the area) should take advantage of this great recreation center. The ARC has so much to offer! An indoor track, two weight rooms, lots of machines & equipment, plenty of courts (basketball, racquet ball, volleyball, etc), and lots of exercise rooms & studios, a heated pool and more! The equipment here is definitely useable for both beginners and pros. There are instructions on them and all adjustable. Both the free and paid classes here are worth it. I love love love the dance classes here (hip hop & belly dancing are both extremely fun!) $35-$40 for 10 weeks for classes here are cheap in my opinion. Plus the instructors are always super nice and have lots of experience :3 The facilities here are always well kept and clean. Never have I had a bad experience here a except for parking tickets. Always have a pass or buy one! A great place to tone up, get fit, & stay healthy in any way you want - if you get bored just try something new. read more

This place has almost everything: Rock climbing, 2 weight rooms 4 multi-purpose rooms, a matt room, olympic size pool, outdoor tennis, 4 basketball courts, and a 2 layered giant field to host several games. Programs offer from rock climbing, dance, to even cooking! My most enjoyable spot is the indoor track. It's definitely a different feel from what I am use to with the outdoor track. There are also machines there against the window which has a pretty awesome view. Advice: * Beware of traffic hours (evenings). It gets super busy such as weight rooms or multi-purpose rooms. * $5 for guests (must have an affiliate) * If you're up for an outdoor workout. Love this place! It's a little smaller than the ARC at UC Davis, but this place has more upgraded equipment and floors. Gets REALLY crowded the first couple of weeks during the quarter when everyone makes the "I'm going to really try and get in shape this quarter!" promise, but quickly dies off after that. Since I am not a UCI student at the moment and must pay for membership, I can't say that I mind that much at all. I've taken a few group exercise classes here such as studio cycling and tidal wave and I've loved them! With two weight rooms, a circuit area, track, cardio equipment everywhere, raquetball, badminton, pool, rockclimbing wall, volleyball, indoor soccer, and other activities, this place offers a variety of activities for a reasonable price! read more

I never actually thought about reviewing the gym but I did for SLIB, so why not this as well? I used to frequent this place a lot more during the summer and a lot more when I didn't have 24 units each quarter. I guess that I better make use of my days at the ARC before it ends this coming summer. Parking is a hassle right now because they're constructing a parking structure, so I usually bike or walk there. There are lots of facilities you can use (paid and non-paid). Some paid ones-- certain classes (yoga, pilates, dance, rock-climbing, private tennis lessons, cooking lessons, private swim lessons,etc) and some free drop-in ones (abs and thighs, etc). Since being at UCI for almost four years, I have witnessed the expansion of the ARC and I must say, it's a great place to work out at! This gym impresses me to the point that I expect all gyms to be like this! I'm definitely going to miss this place when I graduate. :( read more

ARC! How I miss you and love you, especially now that I know how sh*tty basically every other gym out there is. Now that I've graduated and moved away, I will even pay $10 a visit to visit you, if necessary. It's beautiful, top of the line, bright lit, clean...gorgeous, actually. Well ventilated. Good classes, beautiful pool, jacuzzi, nice track above the basketball courts so you can watch the games below. Great system where you can just plug your headphones into the elliptical...no dealing with the radio stations. Because until recently...who carried a radio just for the gym? Hellloooo...iPods? But yeah...lucky OC people. Lucky lucky lucky. They provide the towels, too. Two weight rooms, even cooking classes and other random stuff upstairs. A roller hockey rink in the back! Pump & Sculpt is the best class! This center is so spacious. It has all types of equipment and classes, swimming pools, tennis courts, basket ball court, fields, tracks, climbing wall, etc. Reasonable membership for faculties and families. Highly recommend! Honestly, this review might be 11 years overdue; since I first was introduced to the Anteater Recreation Center back in 2002. But then again, Yelp hasn't existed that long either, so I guess I'm not as late as I first thought. Anyhow, after first coming here when I was a college freshman during an open house during zero/welcome week, I immediately knew why UC Irvine didn't have a college football team. That money and location that could have been spent on an arena and supporting a team, went to a baller gym. Even over a decade later, it's still impressive and arguably the best college gym in the area, reinforced by many of my friends who went to other universities. A few of my friends who didn't go to UCI would typically ask if I could check them in as well, whenever they visited me at my apartment/dorm. The acronym of the facility, ARC, is appropriate for this massive structure, as it evokes the ark of Noah and all the stuff he jammed into it many eons ago. This facility has many memories associated with it for me. I met several future good friends and roommates here, had friends work here, strengthen relationships, and had business school functions here in more recent years. There's just about every intramural activity and outdoor activity you can think of on the grounds of the ARC. There's ropes courses, baseball diamonds, large swimming pools, weight rooms, dance rooms and classes, a suspended indoor track, soccer fields, rock climbing, several basketball courts, racquetball, tennis, archery, yoga, rowing/sailing, badminton courts, and table tennis (a personal favorite). There was also a smoothie and snack bar. There was cardio equipment strewn about the place as well...where ever they could fit it. They basically had everything but skeet shooting. And that's only because people could die in that sport. They recently built a MASSIVE parking structure here. I swear, it's one of the largest parking structures you'll find here. It actually now obstructs the view of the ARC from a couple blocks down on Campus Drive. Back in the day, I walked here from the Middle Earth dorms with various friends on a dirt path we affectionately named "Rape Road," as there was no pavement, no lights and no real security. Later, I either drove myself and a group of friends from my second year on, or I ran here (thereby getting my cardio in and not spending any time on that once at the gym). I used to visit everyday here during my peak. Occasionally, I went twice a day. Part of it was because you had nothing else to really do in the idyllic setting of Irvine when out of class, or your friends wanted to go at various times during the day. Definitely the well-maintained facility itself was a big draw. It was open late and opened every day as well. Now, I only visit the facility once a year for my business school's annual softball tournament. What a drastic shift. Therefore, if you're a current undergrad or grad student or staff member of the UC Irvine community, be sure you take advantage of this place. Otherwise, you're really missing out on one of the school's crown jewels (not to mention your tuition already pays for its operation). read more

God I miss this place. Truly one of the things I miss the most about not living in Irvine is the ARC (by the way, that list is extremely short). I survived today... you probably wouldn't have guess what I did today. I was walking on thin wire 50 fts up on the air. No, serious...literally, I was up so high in the air and just one word I can describe it, that is "Petrified". I visited the Odyssey course with one of our director and my other co-worker weeks ago, came to ask all the details and check out the course, and went back and convince the whole team to participate in this program as our team building activity. So, what is "Team UP"? It is a high ropes course which stands 50 feet tall and stretches 360 feet long. A high ropes challenge course, that has three towers and two levels, which provides teams and groups of all kinds the opportunity to participate in teambuilding experience led by trained facilitators. I must went insane to think it would be a piece of cake for me since it didn't look that scary from the ground. I was wrong.. today is THE DAY... We started off by doing some games on the ground and got used to some team building techniques and strategy, and did the walk on the wire in the ground school. So far so good..only little glitch, while I was trying to tap on the director during the game, he fall, and I fall over him, but for some reason, most of the people thought I push him down. Bad start, the rumors will spread quickly in the office tomorrow. =P (I swear I'm innocent) Then we got our gears ready and start to climb on the giant cargo net to reach the starting tree house for the first level of the rope course. My whole body froze as soon as I need to step my feet on the wire and hook my lobster claws on the wire. There are many game rules that we need to follow and we were giving no instruction about how to get across from point A to point B.. each group need to come up with a game plan to help each team mate across.. First level took us about 2 hours and all the team members survive the first level without any injury. In the afternoon, only six of us wanted to continue and finish the second level..more then 50% drop out rate.. haha.. and I think I just went mad and wanted to finish the whole course regardless how much I was afraid of height. I think this is a great experience for the whole group, and something very unusual that I would do once in my life time. Now, my whole body is aching and shaking.... god probably can't blame me if I call in sick tomorrow.
