We were looking for a late night dinner as most places closed at 8 or 9 pm and we were very happy with our selections. No wait on a Saturday night and we got seated right away in a cozy booth with the view of the nice fireplace. The food was amazing. The pull apart bread and bruschetta were great appetizers choices. I had the blackened Caesar salad and the rest of our table got the 5 cheese Mac n' Cheese and the roast. Everyone was very happy. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. The views here are everything. Right on the bay, you can't go wrong with enjoying a beverage outside. The biggest issue was the quality of food for the price. If you're in Traverse City, this is the place to go. Be prepared to wait 3 hours for a table, no matter what time you arrive. The food is a little average, and most people go for a coveted spot at the Tiki Bar which offers amazing views right on the water. We ordered the locals favorite 'smoked white fish dip' which was not much better than a Deli white fish salad. We also ordered the seafood pasta dish which was lovingly adorned with garlic and fresh seafood. The view was fantastic, and made it worth the wait to gain entry. We really wanted to like our meal, But we felt restaurant was unfortunately overpriced and over rated. It's in a beautiful location with a great view, but unfortunately we were stuck inside since they only serve drinks on the patio. They did have the tables set apart but it just felt dark and copped up outside. Even if it were a limited menu it would be great to enjoy the fresh air with a snack during this pandemic. I had the whitefish tacos and they were the fishiest tasting tacos I have ever tasted. Definitely not worth the $18 for lunch. The avocado egg roll they served it with was delicious. My husbands French fries with his sandwich were cold and soggy. My boyfriend and I ate this last night. I ordered the whitefish, and he ordered the filet. His steak was overcooked, but he was too hungry to say anything. I, however, let my waitress know that the fish and mashed potatoes were both very bland and not good. She asked if I wanted something else, but at that point, we needed to get going. She then brought the bill over, and I was shocked to see she charged us full price for my meal that I hardly touched. I am a manger at a wine bar/ chop house and was very displeased. in that way, it was handled or lacked off being handled at all. I would never charge someone full price for something they took only a couple bites of And didn't enjoy. We were excited to try this place and only left unhappy and hungry. This was my second time visiting, and both visits were fantastic. I'm a creature of habit, so I started with the goat cheese app and had the filet as an entree each time. Filets don't always have a ton of flavor, but this dish was seasoned perfectly (also juicy, not dry). It was cooked just right, between a medium rare-medium. I had the lavender lemonade which was tasty (lemonade is from the gun), and my sister enjoyed her Bloody Mary. Since our 2nd visit came during COVID updates, here is what they do: Per Michigan guidelines, you are asked to wear a mask when not at the table. We were greeted by a very friendly hostess. She was very matter of fact about masks and requirements for where to wait. Social distancing is required so the bar has seats missing with reserved signs blocking people from crowding in. (Not complaining here, just stating what it is like.) Everyone working was incredibly efficient when this must be very difficult. Kudos to the staff for staying upbeat during these times. read more

Be careful of this restaurant. They have implemented a 3% surcharge with a small sign posted on the door and fine print on the menu then have the audacity to pretend it's not a unethical hidden fee. Food is already overpriced and claimed the 3% was to cover fluctuating food costs. Its unethical to have hidden surcharges that most people miss but instead should add it to the menu. If the greedy owners were worried about fluctuating prices they would print menus daily. Not to mention the swarm of fruit flies at our table while eating trying to land in the wine. On top of that with the doors open and no fans to keep the flies put of the restaurant there were black flies coming to our table too! Wait staff was friendly and attentive but manager was full of excuses for the hidden surcharge and the fly issue! read more

I know the wait here can get pretty insane on a busy weekend - I heard the hostesses tell parties that there would be up to a 1.5hr wait when I came. Luckily I was a party of 1 so I got seated at the bar immediately (perks of solo traveling!). I got the smoked whitefish dip and the panko-crusted whitefish burger with sweet potato fries since I wanted to try whitefish before I left the northern part of Michigan. For $16, the whitefish dip could have been better, and it honestly made me full enough so that I couldn't finish much of my burger by the time it came. The naan bread and flatbread crackers were a lot for the dip which was pretty salty, and adding on gherkins too to balance out the dip I guess. I did get free bread with basil and pesto sauce from the waiter at the bar serving me, which was nice considering there was a large party sitting right next to me at the bar so I was hanging off the edge of the bar while they took their time. The burger was standard and the sweet potato fries were pretty good. The fish in the burger was kinda dry though, and the sauces and tomato in the burger sogged up the bread a bit. I don't think I would've paid $17 for it. Overall though, my dining experience was decent. read more

Had white fish ($40+) that was mostly bread and very little fish, up charge for risotto that didn't have any flavor. The fresh bread was very nice soft and warm, served with whipped butter and basil oil that was far too strong. Needed a good cleaning, floors, tables and booths were visibly dirty. Unfortunately we wont be going back. This used to be my favorite place to eat in Traverse City, but nothing we had tonight was good. It wasn't bad tasting; it just wasn't good. Had the seafood pasta, and nothing seemed seasoned. I started with the French onion soup and it was fine. The onions were a little tough but the broth was good. My husband had the walleye and it wasn't good. He started with the shrimp and lobster bisque and it was ok. We didn't finish anything and definitely didn't want boxes. $102 is a lot of money for what can only be called at best, a mediocre meal. The view is fantastic but we went at night so we weren't able to enjoy that. Our server was adequate, though another server noticed our empty glasses and took care of refills. As poor as things have become, I feel confident Apache grill will not stay open. read more

First time here summer 2021. I'm sure Covid has affected the way they run things but if this is how it still is/normally is I'd highly recommend avoiding this place. If you want to wait 3+ hours in the blazing sun only to find out that only ~1/3 of the menu you'd been looking at for hours is available then this is the place for you! Also, weirdly when we were there I don't think I saw one "adult" staff member... everyone seemed to be in their teens/low 20's(?) which was odd & a bit unsettling in terms of feeling like someone capable was at the helm. The hostesses did not seem to care at all whether we (& several other couples) ever got a table or were irritated/unhappy customers. S.t.e.l.l.a.r. During Covid, you check-in outside, where the staff were pleasant and upfront about the waiting involved. Even a few would-be patrons who demonstrated Karen attitudes (if you know, you know) were shown great patience. Then, you wait at the tiki bar and on the docks. Perfectly pleasant for my wife and I, even with an estimated two hour wait, thanks to our server Kim. She was attentive, had jokes, and was working hard to make sure everyone was getting good service. The time passed quickly! One duck's official name is Betty-- just so you know. Inside, Austin was our server. That guy was professional, knowledgeable, and kind to us who'd been out on the dock awhile. The whitefish dip had great flavor while avoiding the pitfall of saltiness. Wow. What a great meal, experience and view! This place was packed, we decided to come here on a Wednesday night versus The weekend or Thursday because we knew it was going to be packed...heads-up... it was!! LOL. No problem, we just went outside and enjoyed a drink at the bar and then closed out and sat at a table on the waterfront. I actually like that the outback area is a bar only (not to be mistaken with their patio) as this gives you a very enjoyable place to wait. So enjoyable you don't even feel like you are waiting. Once we were called for our table, we were seated at a very nice setting as well. I ordered the pecan crusted Whitefish and my better 2/3rd's (boyfriend) ordered the Lake Superior Walleye. Holy freaking fresh amazing!!!! The cherry sauce that came with my whitefish was so good and I have never had a fish prepared in this matter and I want to have it again, probably everyday from here on out, lol. His Walleye was so tender and cooked perfectly. The seasonings on both fish and our sides were done perfectly. The service was excellent both at the outside bar and inside the restaurant. Steak burger topped with TC bourbon glaze, bacon, white cheddar and haystacks My other son had the Slow Cooked BBQ Ribs, were good! French fries and coleslaw. Full order. Half order Myself I had the Rainbow Trout which I liked very much and would order it again. Unfortunately this popular establishment in Traverse City has not adopted a system that works to seat guests in a timely manner. Reservations can not be made in advance, we tried making them 6 months ago and we were told to begin calling or join the online waitlist the day of our planned visit. We did so, however the phone just rang and the website wouldn't load once waitlist was clicked. So we drove here and were told it was a 2 1/2 hour wait for a table. Very disappointed that such a sought after dinner destination doesn't have a more reliable modern way to serve patrons. read more

Went out for a nice date night and loved every minute of Apache Trout Grill- once we got inside. Seriously, on a Monday night at 5 PM there was not a single parking space open, and there is no street parking. But once inside- whoa! With the gorgeous view outback, we enjoyed some drinks while we waited for our table. They have a limited beer menu (which is my drink of choice), but they had a wide variety of local wines and cocktails made with local spirits, including TC Whiskey. Their bread starter was also served with local Fustini's oil and vinegar. For dinner, I had the seafood pasta. It was loaded with shrimp and scallops and had a great spicy kick. We have been here a few times now and this place is worth the 2 hour wait times! My husband got the twin filets topped with Fried Boursin cheese and it was to die for. I had the seafood linguine which was very tasty as well and would definitely order again. We always get the whitefish dip because it is just so good.
