Ordered the bbq bacon wrapped shrimp as a starter, and it was a little over cooked she said, so she brought us another one without me even saying anything. Prime rib was shockingly good as was the shrimp and lobster bisque. The seafood Alfredo was good, but nothing super special. I know the wait here can get pretty insane on a busy weekend - I heard the hostesses tell parties that there would be up to a 1.5hr wait when I came. Luckily I was a party of 1 so I got seated at the bar immediately (perks of solo traveling!). I got the smoked whitefish dip and the panko-crusted whitefish burger with sweet potato fries since I wanted to try whitefish before I left the northern part of Michigan. For $16, the whitefish dip could have been better, and it honestly made me full enough so that I couldn't finish much of my burger by the time it came. The naan bread and flatbread crackers were a lot for the dip which was pretty salty, and adding on gherkins too to balance out the dip I guess. I did get free bread with basil and pesto sauce from the waiter at the bar serving me, which was nice considering there was a large party sitting right next to me at the bar so I was hanging off the edge of the bar while they took their time. The burger was standard and the sweet potato fries were pretty good. The fish in the burger was kinda dry though, and the sauces and tomato in the burger sogged up the bread a bit. I don't think I would've paid $17 for it. Overall though, my dining experience was decent. read more

Unfortunately we wont be going back. This used to be my favorite place to eat in Traverse City, but nothing we had tonight was good. It wasn't bad tasting; it just wasn't good. Had the seafood pasta, and nothing seemed seasoned. I started with the French onion soup and it was fine. The onions were a little tough but the broth was good. My husband had the walleye and it wasn't good. He started with the shrimp and lobster bisque and it was ok. We didn't finish anything and definitely didn't want boxes. $102 is a lot of money for what can only be called at best, a mediocre meal. The view is fantastic but we went at night so we weren't able to enjoy that. Our server was adequate, though another server noticed our empty glasses and took care of refills. As poor as things have become, I feel confident Apache grill will not stay open. read more

Ambiance is unmatched because of the incredible view of the lake which can be seen from the deck seating or the floor to ceiling windows. Scallops and lobster bisque was perfection. Excellent views, but can only get drinks on the deck (food and drinks inside). VERY overpriced for what it was. Had white fish ($40+) that was mostly bread and very little fish, up charge for risotto that didn't have any flavor. The fresh bread was very nice soft and warm, served with whipped butter and basil oil that was far too strong. Needed a good cleaning, floors, tables and booths were visibly dirty. First time here summer 2021. I'm sure Covid has affected the way they run things but if this is how it still is/normally is I'd highly recommend avoiding this place. If you want to wait 3+ hours in the blazing sun only to find out that only ~1/3 of the menu you'd been looking at for hours is available then this is the place for you! Also, weirdly when we were there I don't think I saw one "adult" staff member... everyone seemed to be in their teens/low 20's(?) which was odd & a bit unsettling in terms of feeling like someone capable was at the helm. The hostesses did not seem to care at all whether we (& several other couples) ever got a table or were irritated/unhappy customers. Unfortunately this popular establishment in Traverse City has not adopted a system that works to seat guests in a timely manner. Reservations can not be made in advance, we tried making them 6 months ago and we were told to begin calling or join the online waitlist the day of our planned visit. We did so, however the phone just rang and the website wouldn't load once waitlist was clicked. So we drove here and were told it was a 2 1/2 hour wait for a table. Very disappointed that such a sought after dinner destination doesn't have a more reliable modern way to serve patrons. read more

Wow. What a great meal, experience and view! This place was packed, we decided to come here on a Wednesday night versus The weekend or Thursday because we knew it was going to be packed...heads-up... it was!! LOL. No problem, we just went outside and enjoyed a drink at the bar and then closed out and sat at a table on the waterfront. I actually like that the outback area is a bar only (not to be mistaken with their patio) as this gives you a very enjoyable place to wait. So enjoyable you don't even feel like you are waiting. Once we were called for our table, we were seated at a very nice setting as well. I ordered the pecan crusted Whitefish and my better 2/3rd's (boyfriend) ordered the Lake Superior Walleye. Holy freaking fresh amazing!!!! The cherry sauce that came with my whitefish was so good and I have never had a fish prepared in this matter and I want to have it again, probably everyday from here on out, lol. His Walleye was so tender and cooked perfectly. The seasonings on both fish and our sides were done perfectly. The service was excellent both at the outside bar and inside the restaurant. S.t.e.l.l.a.r. During Covid, you check-in outside, where the staff were pleasant and upfront about the waiting involved. Even a few would-be patrons who demonstrated Karen attitudes (if you know, you know) were shown great patience. Then, you wait at the tiki bar and on the docks. Perfectly pleasant for my wife and I, even with an estimated two hour wait, thanks to our server Kim. She was attentive, had jokes, and was working hard to make sure everyone was getting good service. The time passed quickly! One duck's official name is Betty-- just so you know. Inside, Austin was our server. That guy was professional, knowledgeable, and kind to us who'd been out on the dock awhile. The whitefish dip had great flavor while avoiding the pitfall of saltiness. The halibut and the whitefish entrees were the best my wife and I have ever eaten, bar none, cooked to savory perfection. Would recommend! I'd have waited three, four hours happily. read more

A beautiful view and restaurant. Service and kitchen are mediocre, so wouldn't recommend. We put our names on a list and we're seated close to estimated time, but waited over an hour and 15 minutes from when we ordered for entrees. A gluten-free (listed as an option on the menu) walleye entree ($43) was served without the crab sauce and a scoop of cafeteria-style mashed potatoes and side of peas and carrots. Unironically. Drink order completely left out. Server was unapologetic and defensive when this was mentioned. The cherry salad tasted like cherry pie filling and was basically inedible. Went out for a nice date night and loved every minute of Apache Trout Grill- once we got inside. Seriously, on a Monday night at 5 PM there was not a single parking space open, and there is no street parking. But once inside- whoa! With the gorgeous view outback, we enjoyed some drinks while we waited for our table. They have a limited beer menu (which is my drink of choice), but they had a wide variety of local wines and cocktails made with local spirits, including TC Whiskey. Their bread starter was also served with local Fustini's oil and vinegar. For dinner, I had the seafood pasta. It was loaded with shrimp and scallops and had a great spicy kick. We have been here a few times now and this place is worth the 2 hour wait times! My husband got the twin filets topped with Fried Boursin cheese and it was to die for. Food took forever to be served and was cold . Needed to be sent back to be warmed. For an extremely expensive experience ( 3% toll, non tip is added because of "incresed prices ". It's at the bottom of the menu in fine print) Bread was tasteless. The seafood fettuccine had 4 tiny shrimp and 3 tiny scallops and lots of noodles. Ridiculous for how expensive this place is! Appetizers wildly over priced and barely adequate. On the positive note the service was ok and friendly and eager to please. Bottom line. Went here as recommended by a friend. We arrive for a late lunch and were able to get a table close to the window and the amazing view of the lake. We had been nibbling so didn't go all out but I'd did have the lobster and shrimp bisque in addition to the ahi tuna and avocado salad. It actually was more than I could eat and my companion ate the remainder. Both were very tasty! I'd love to come back and have more bisque and try something more substantial on the menu. We have been here several times, and our experience is always very good. We love being on the water, and we recently appreciated the gorgeous bay view while sitting outside waiting for a table while enjoying a drink. We were there for a late lunch on a busy day, but our waiter was friendly and very attentive. My wife went with the seafood bisque while I got the Apache burger with sweet potato fries. Her chowder was flavorful and hearty and the serving very generous. My burger was large and skillfully prepared and presented. Went for dinner last night with two friends. The waiter was awesome, my meal was a disappointment. I ordered the Salmon Cesar Salad. He put it down and I noticed right away there was so much browned lettuce in my salad, at first I thought it had a special sauce on?it??? In the end I ate around the 20% of brown lettuce because I was hungry. It the scheme of things, yes it could have been worse, but when I spending over $20 for a salad, at a nice restaurant, I would think they would take a little more pride in their product. Amazing! Do yourself a favor and get the lobster and shrimp bisque. I tried to buy a few gallons from them but apparently this place is too classy. The wait is long (still totally worth it) so show up before your girlfriend/wife get hangry. They have a couple bars, tables, and live music out back while you wait. Try not to fill up on their delicious olive oil and balsamic vinegar because the white fish options here are excellent! Last time I was there we ordered calamari and two drinks and it cost $50. The food is fine but dramatically overpriced. The outdoor area is OK although it's right on the shores of Lake Michigan, which is one of the reasons it's very popular. If it's a summer evening and you want to go get a drink and sit by the water this is one of the places to go. some of the wate stuff is very good and others not so much. We ate here on the last night of our vacation in TC. We were told there would be a 30 minute wait so we sat outside and ordered drinks from the tiki bar and watched sailboats coming in. After only 10 minutes we had a table! My husband and I ordered a cup of the shrimp and lobster bisque to share and it was heavenly! Even better - the ciabatta and pesto that came to the table before our entrees. We ate a truckload of that stuff!! Amazing. I ordered the salmon with wild rice and chef's veggies. It was good, but nothing spectacular or memorable. My husband had the whitefish sandwich and he said the same thing. Nothing was really WRONG with our food, but nothing about it blew our minds. I believe it's worth the trip from California to Traverse to dine here! Had the Pecan crusted white fish and the pan seared Walleye, both of them outstanding. The bacon wrapped shrimp was our appetizer, plenty good. Great wine selection, also tried a couple of cocktails, all excellent. A very popular TC destination! During the summer season and weekend evenings, be prepared to wait usually an hour or more, as they do not accept reservations. Beautiful outside area to do so, right on the West Bay (pictured below). Reason we give a 4 (vs 5) star rating is because the hostesses at the entrance are usually less than friendly, and seem distracted/uninterested/curt at times. Once past the wait, however, the food is well-prepared and delicious! Servers do a great job! This day, we were there for lunch. French onion soup (mine prepared without the bread crouton, just cheese on top) can't be beat in TC! Pictured are the grilled Caesar and the side salad, just so you can see how nice these simple sides are. Hubby says panko-crusted whitefish sandwich was a "6" on a 5-point scale!
