We stopped here on our way out of town, at the end of a long vacation, and the beautiful blue Traverse bay brightened up the restaurant, through some open doors and windows. The decor here was upscale woodsy, with a long canoe hanging in the back room. Food was good, though soups had a very thick consistency. Twice this summer my wife and I were trying to eat here when we were in Traverse City, but both times it was an hour and a half wait. This past weekend we were in town and decided to try again. The wait was long again but we checked in and waited. It was not worth the wait or the price. The $27 whitefish was dry, overcooked, and flavorless. My wife said her burger was okay and our friends ordered tacos, $17 for two tacos, and soup $10. The drinks were okay, two whiskey, fall drinks, but they were $12 each and nothing exceptional. There are so many great places to eat in TC. Don't wait 90 mins for below average, over priced food. We would like to give a second chance but it's a big risk for so much money. read more

Service and food quality have really gone down. For. The prices charge, the food overcooked and lacked flavor. It used to be our go to restaurant while visiting Traverse City but not any more! We had walleye. With rice and snow please. The rice was sticky rice that was so dry we couldn't eat. The best part of the meal was the cherry salad but the 3 dollars to ad a plate to share was unacceptable. If you want great service and food I wouldn't recommend the Apache Trout Grill! The service in the bar was almost non existent! He was more invoked in talk than checking to see if everything was ok or if we needed anything. He may have been a good bartender but never should be allowed to wait the tables in the bar. Rather than wait tables . He ignored the table. We won't be returning to Apache Trout Grill. Think twice before you go and spend money on food!!! Lastly, when we called him over to tell him the whitefish was mushy and not good. The bar is fun, friendly and makes a reasonable "new" old fashion (I chose the Knob Creek bourbon), serves nice local wines--my sweetheart enjoyed a pear shaped, citrus finished Bowers Harbor Vineyards 2015 Pinot Grigio--and has a short but acceptable national and international wine list for a local-favorite haunt. (Bowers is located nearby on the Old Mission peninsula.) The kitchen may lean a bit too heavily on its reputation and neighbors--but wait for the punchline. A new friend eating at the bar accepted an overcooked "Wagyu" style beef steak special. Medium rare became medium well plus. Oops. Stop. Note this: the manager overheard the question of preparation, did not argue with my friend when he said, "it's okay." He disappeared, had the kitchen do it right, and had it in front of my friend in minutes. Service. Dear reader, you know this is a bugaboo of mine. HIGH MARKS EARNED HERE. In the dining room our view was Lake Michigan prime just in time for sunset reflecting off the dozens of sailboats anchored in the bay. Max, the floor manager was at the table when needed and invisible otherwise. If you've read my reviews before you know of my fondness for halibut, the filet mignon of the sea. Walleye is the freshwater echo of that perspective. Ergo, the first rule of walleye preparation is: first do no harm. The Lake Superior Walleye with caper beurre blanch sauce was better than good without attaining greatness. The fish was fresh, firm and tasty. The light breading was not soggy nor flakey. The rice pilaf sound but not worth further comment and the asparagus spears just a touch too mature for my taste but prepared nicely al dente. All in, a very enjoyable evening. Four stars. Best meal we had while in Traverse City! The staff was great. The bartender, Fred, was very welcoming and very kind. Our server was also great! We had the lobster and shrimp bisque which was wonderful. My boyfriend and I both had the filet which was so tender and cooked to perfection. We have made several attempts to come here for dinner, but the wait has made us choose other options in the past. We came during the winter time and were excited to find that we didn't have a long wait. We had appetizers that were very good, but our server brought out salmon and flank steak and that were far from delicious. The salmon was flavorless and the medium steak we received was brown as could be. We ate the flavorless salmon but decided to speak up about our steak. The steak came back shredded and a mess, but it was cooked correctly. The potatoes were not cooked. The manager was kind enough to chat with us and offered us a dessert and let us know that we could come back not enjoying our appetizers, but he can assure us we would like our next meal. He confirmed that people usually have issues with one or the other. Extremely dissatisfied and we will not be returning to this establishment. *edit to review* the carrot cake that was sent home with us was also flavorless and less that desirable. We were told it was made in house. This place is overrated and overpriced. I cannot believe I was left with a bill over $100. I've had much better experiences in the area at half the price. My husband and I came in on October 16th for our anniversary. After reading some of the reviews we decided on the BBQ bacon wrapped shrimp, the Lobster/Shrimp bisque. Additionally my husband had the prime rib and I had the pecan crusted white fish. WOW!!! The ENTIRE meal was fantastic!!! Our waitress Kate made the entire evening special, including buying us our dessert when she found out we were celebrating. Apache Trout is now on our MUST EAT AT locations anytime we visit. Two days later and still craving the bisque we went back for lunch. I had a cup of coup with the traditional Cesar salad and my husband had the half sandwich special with soup. Again PHENOMENAL meal. It's over hyped. The location is 5 stars the patio and the drinks were wonderful they serve local Michigan wines and beer which is a plus. They do not take reservations it's first come first serve. The bread and pesto was delicious. We went on a Sunday and parking was limited. Some park across the street it's pretty dangerous. Was quoted 1 hour and 30 minutes got a table in 1 hour. I lucked out and got a seat at the bar, otherwise it would have been 1 he 45 min wait. That was at 7:30. By 8:30-9:00 the restaurant was fairly open. I started with the shrimp and lobster bisque. It was very thick more potatoes than shrimp and I didn't see any lobster. I had a cocktail that was good and strong. The waiter brought out ciabatta bread with herbs and olive oil. A great combination. For dinner I had the walleye. Three large pieces served with wild rice and veggies. I got the key lime pie to go which looks awesome. Waiting to Chow down on it later. read more

Plenty of seating available since we dined around 3:30pm, but we're sat in a side room that looks like part of a Big Boy or diner instead of one of the empty tables in the lovely main dining area. We were accommodated when we asked to move. The lobster bisque was cold and had no lobster in it, just shrimp. The flavor was good though oddly thick. The Cobb salad came without the boiled egg and when we asked, after a wait we're told they need to cook more and it never came. Asked for cream with the coffee and had to ask twice. My husband and I dined here on a Sunday night while visiting Traverse City for an anniversary trip. They do not take reservations, but we wanted to eat at a restaurant on the water so even though we were told the wait was an hour and 45 minutes we decided to stay. We found seating outside overlooking the water and enjoyed drinks from the tiki bar while we waited. That was the best part of the evening. The food was very average. I ordered the whitefish with rice pilaf and garlic green beans. The fish was just ok. Edible, but not memorable. The rice pilaf turned out to be wild rice that I'm pretty sure was Uncle Ben's from a box, and the green beans were flavorless and rubbery. My husband had tenderloin which he said was also just ok. The location is very nice. The dining room looks out over the bay. There is outside seating in nice weather. The interior seems more like a steak joint but it's fine. The food was good but not necessarily worth the prices. But the server was very good. Maybe it's a Traverse City thing but we had some of the best service during our week in town. It's hard to rate a place with such EXCELLENT food such a low rating. We arrived 2 hours before closing not anticipating a 2hr wait. Not a big deal as the tiki bar on the bay was a great way to socialize the time away. Once we were seated, that's where the rating began to drop. The server was rushing us through our dinner choices assuming since they were close to closing. We ordered an appetizer, only it didn't come. The server blamed it on the kitchen...saying the station printer ran out of paper so it didn't get made. That could be the truth...but there was no apologies. I can't tell you about the food or the service since we could not be accommodated in a reasonable amount of time. We had a group of 14 people and called early in the day about our group. They told us that they would not do a reservation, but the wait time would be 45 minutes to an hour. When we all met in 4 separate cars and found parking, they said the wait would be 2-1/2 hours at least. That was past the kids bed time. We will not be going back. I would not recommend this place to anyone trying to eat with a large group or with kids. We were very excited to try it, but I guess it isn't happening. read more

Overall this was just okay. We went on a Wednesday afternoon so it wasn't too busy and parking was fine. My mom and I each ordered the Apache Margarita which was extremely good, but everything was kind of downhill from there. Our waitress didn't list the specials like the other waitresses did, and poured like a cup of oil in the pesto that came with the single piece of bread. I got the lobster bisque for a starter and that was pretty good, but the cheese and meat sampler was pretty subpar. The whitefish dip was not very fishy, crackers were boring, and the creamy cheese was a weird choice when the dip was already creamy and cheesy. My mom had the whitefish and it was definitely not worth the $30. Steamed broccoli, (probably uncle Bens) rice, and a fried piece of fish that was just okay. View was excellent, drinks were excellent, but food and service made this a less than stellar evening and definitely not worth the $75 bill. read more

We recently ate dinner here when visiting the area. We've been there several times in the past and have always enjoyed the service, the ambiance and the food. The ambiance and service were still great, but the food has definitely gone down hill. Not sure if it was just a bad night. But there were 5 of us and no one was thrilled with their food. I had a caprese salad that you would think was hard to mess up. It was drenched in the balsamic glaze, which for me made it almost inedible. Someone else had the fried perch and several of us tried it...definite thumbs down on that. Mediocre sums up everything we had and that's being kind. Highly recommend The Farm Club on the Leelanau Peninsula which was superb. read more

My family and I enjoyed an excellent dinner experience at Apache during a recent weekend vacation to Traverse City. The space, service, and food were all exceptional. The classy rustic interior includes a gorgeous view of West Grand Traverse Bay from virtually every seat in the house, with the exception of the bar. The staff was kind and seemed very knowledgable in regard to dishes and wine pairings. I had the shrimp and lobster bisque (highly recommended!) to start and the lake superior walleye for a main course - both were absolutely delicious. The bread service served with main course was also very good, especially the homemade pesto that was prepared fresh at the table. I looking forward to returning when the opportunity arises. read more
