We were at the kitchen counter and the head chef/owner talked to us a lot while he was at the pass finishing dishes. He was not overbearing, where it was annoying. He was very friendly. He asked a lot of questions and we returned the favor. He went around talking to other tables too. Besides him, the rest of the staff was very pleasant and accommodating, including the chefs doing the cooking! It was one of the best experiences I had in regard to the staff. I have included what I ate below. Everything was timed out well too. Our Bread ($8) - This was a cheddar bread with ranch butter. This was very good. It came out extremely warm. The ranch butter was light and paired perfectly with the soft inside and slight crisp on the outside of the bread. Cucumber ($16) - This came with salsa Macha, pickled jalapeno, and cilantro. This appeared extremely fresh. There was a slight kick from the jalapenos and/or salsa. It all went well together with one another. Ricotta Gnudi ($17) - This came with pea, basil, country ham, and Marcona almonds. The gnudi had an unreal texture. The almonds were a nice added touch for some crunch. I did not really think the ham was needed. Potato ($17) - This came in a brown-butter cheese sauce with shallots and pickled mushrooms. This was my favorite non dessert dish of the night. The cheese sauce was unreal with tons of flavors, while the pickled mushrooms combined with the crispy shallots made for a superb pairing. Fried Chicken ($16) - This came with two large chicken pieces with a white BBQ sauce. This was brined in Earl Grey tea. The skin was crispy as anything, and the chicken was cooked to perfection. It was moist with great color. The white BBQ sauce was one of the best sauces I had in a while. I do not have much experience with white BBQ sauces, but this was tremendous. The vinegar could really be tasted and paired well with the hot crispy skin of the chicken. Halibut ($47) - This came with white beans, chermoula, and black garlic. The halibut was cooked perfectly, and the chermoula was ideal with the slight crisp from the large beans. There was also a nice crunch from crispy brown rice it seemed like. Key Lime Pie ($16) - This was with a homemade graham crust, white chocolate, and a basil meringue. This was my favorite overall dish of the night. The crust was one of the best I ever had. It was so buttery and had a perfect thickness to the key lime filling. The little meringue pieces on top was an ideal topping. Will I go back? Obvious.

Won't be rushing back.

We were traveling through Traverse City today and a friend had recommended the Apache Trout Grill. So, we thought we would try it. We were initially told that our wait was going to be one hour to only one and a half hours. So, we were pleasantly surprised that we were seated only forty minutes later. The atmosphere in the restaurant is comfortable and inviting and we were sat at a table next to the windows overlooking the western shore of the Grand Traverse Bay. So far so good. Our waitress, Kennedy, greeted us and took our drink orders and gave us a few minutes to peruse the menu. Kennedy then proceeded to take our order. We ordered shrimp and lobster bisque as well as French onion soup. This was the start of the trip downhill. My wife tasted the shrimp and lobster bisque and said that it had a "smoky" taste. I tasted it and immediately said that the soup was scorched. So, after waiting quite some time for Kennedy to return to our table, I finally asked another waiter if he could send our waitress over. He indicated that he could address our problem which was of course the scorched soup. After that, the manager came out and apologized and asked if we wanted the soup and we deferred. She did indicate that the soup would be removed from our bill. She also implied that she would provide a complimentary dessert. So, we moved on with the rest of our meal which came way to quickly as I had not even finished my soup course. We certainly cannot complain about any of the other food. I had grilled halibut with asparagus and mushroom risotto. All was good, especially the halibut. My wife had a whitefish sandwich which enormous with onion rings. She said that it was good as well. I would say that our drinks were not replenished very quickly and it seemed that we were somewhat avoided. At the end of the night, Kennedy provided us our check. And guess what? It still included the cost of the scorched soup and still had the cost of two desserts that we ordered. So, the manager obviously did not communicate her idea or implication that one dessert would be complimentary. Anyway, we contested the cost of the scorched soup and that was removed. But nothing else was done to our tab for making any adjustment. We made payment and left what I would consider a generous tip for the service that we received along with the responsiveness during the night. Also, one other thing to mention is that there is an automatic 3% surcharge on you bill to cover escalating expenses. I understand that the cost of everything has gone up. But why not just change the cost of the menu items to reflect those changes. May it is too difficult or costly to reprint menus? Not for certain, but it seems "awkward" to me. But I paid the surcharge in addition to our tip. Was really disappointed din what could have been an otherwise pleasant experience. But not terribly impressed and would certainly consider other dining establishments in the area before returning. read more

We've been long-time fans of Apache Trout Grill during visits to Traverse City, always loving the atmosphere and stunning outdoor views. Tonight's visit, however, left us feeling very disappointed. We were quoted a 1-hour wait but ended up waiting over 2 hours. While I understand delays can happen, the slow pace at the outdoor bar made it more frustrating. There was only one bartender outside, and it took over 30 minutes just to get a drink. The saving grace during the wait was the outdoor entertainment, the singer was absolutely amazing, and that helped pass the time. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for the long wait. We ordered the trout dip appetizer ($21), and the portion was shockingly small for the price. My whitefish sandwich had an overly "fishy" taste, and my husband's French dip was overcooked (burnt) and chewy. He sent it back, and while it was removed from the bill, it was still a major disappointment. We've always made Apache Trout Grill a must-visit when in TC, but after tonight, I honestly can't imagine a day when we'd return. read more

Since I live here I have eaten there many times over many years. I understand why it is a popular place to eat and enjoy a beverage and view outside, especially for tourists. But I have reached the point where I now only eat dinner there when out of town guests specifically ask to go there. Wednesday night mid-May our guest wanted to eat there. We were greeted nicely and seated at a table near the glass with a nice view. The atmosphere in the big open room is very nice. From the onset, our waitress was very matter of fact, somewhat condescending and everything seemed hurried. Over the years I feel more and more that the Apache Trout Grill has morphed into a restaurant where turning tables is the goal, especially in high season which I understand. My husband and I travel to Traverse City a few times a year for the amazing wine. In our most recent trip we came upon the Apache Trout Grill. I am so excited to say that we love this place. The local wine (specifically Bowers) and laid back atmosphere will require us to add it to the agenda every time we visit. I highly recommend the meatloaf and pork taco. The location of the place is and food was good. The service on the other hand - not so much. The waitress we had was middle aged and had a rude and bad attitude towards us. She didn't check on us much, said rude things at the table etc. The manager to whom we talked to was very nice and was apologetic, it's too bad the server had to have a bad personality and character towards us - otherwise it would've been a better experience. read more

The beef filet was very superb and the western bar b cue shrimp was very impressive as a starter. Grab a drink on the deck before eating. It was also good as leftovers the next day :) Our server was very attentive and kind. We came in within an hour of closing and never felt rushed at all. Beautiful place to see the sunset over the harbor.

It just had that simple balance of fatty fragrance and crunchy bite. The Seafood Omelette ($26) was also really, really nice. The portion of seafood was genuinely generous: I counted at least three scallops, four shrimp, and mouthful after mouthful of lobster folded into a provolone béchamel. Scoop up a piece with the toasted focaccia and it's hard to imagine a better way to start the morning. Service was prompt and the room was cozy and unpretentious. We'll definitely want to be back to try the lunch and dinner menu.
