Fish & Grits Southern Style Fried Chicken Dinner

The food was absolutely delicious, seasoned to the max, and the ambience was very cool. The dishes took a little longer to come out, but the flavor more than made up for the wait. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Definitely worth coming back! TL;DR - Best meal I've had in Georgia.

Oh yeahhhhhhhhh. My bestfriend threw my 40th at Apache and everyone had a blast. As I am a self proclaimed Taco Tuesday Enthusiast, can you guess what day he threw my party on??? lol! The venue was super easy to find as it sits right on the strip. There is a paid parking lot across the street as well as there are a few spots on the street if you don't mind walking a block or so. Walking in, the ambiance is very homely. It has a cozy vibe with the dim lighting and oversized couches. The bar is vibrant and definitely an eye catcher in each of the rooms. The room you walk into has a kickback type of feel while the main room has the restaurant feel on one side and a classic mini speakeasy feel on the other side. The service itself is standard for a bar environment and the DJ was def on 1000. As I arrived hungry I was excited to order. lol. I opted to get two beef tacos and two jerk chicken tacos. Babeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. When I say yesssssssssssssss. I mean YESSSSSSSSSSS. These tacos were the bombbbbbbbbbbb. Freshly made, my tacos arrived hot and meaty. The fixings were fresh and balanced the meat to shell ratio without being too much. The flavor profiles were robust and the meat was moist. These tacos were done righttttttt and hit the spot. Now, I was told that the Taco Tuesday had a food vendor who made the food so I can't speak to the food made by the venue cooks, however, for taco Tuesday... I'll be back bi-weekly. The Vibe is a go. The Tacos are a go. The Fun is a GO!!!

The service was amazing the music was a little loud. Many idiots left while we were sitting due to, my guess is they may were thrown off by the live saxophone playing. But they missed out on a 1 of a kind experience and the best food you could imagine. My daughter and I both ordered chicken & waffles, my wife ordered Hong Kong French Toast with a side of bacon. The chicken was breaded perfectly and seasoned throughout. The waffle was perfect, crunch on the outside and soft inside. My wife said her Hong Kong french toast was a combination of brownie and french toast and was amazing as was the bacon.

Food was amazing! We loved the service! Such a great vibe! Thanks to our server Harry and the cook Barbara everything was excellent!

Apache XLR = Xtra Lame Revue My guy and I went for a night of erotic soul. The advertisement stated a BDSM demonstration that never happened (or at least not by 12:30am when we gave up and left.) The show didn't run smoothly. There was sooo much wrong. The DJ played good music but it wasn't sexy, erotic music so we never got into the "erotic soul" mood. Also, people walked in front of the stage while people were performing, and that was very distracting. Since when is walking in front of the stage okay? There were really long breaks (like 10-15 min) between acts. By the time a new act came on, they would struggle to engage the audience. That being said, there were some good poets, musicians and singers. And there were some kooks. One girl lip-synced her songs not very well and performed like she had Tourette's. The food was MID. Eat before you come. And the drinks were weak so pre-game. The menu had a notice that drinks were what they were so if you wanted something different to order a shot. A venue stating that their drinks are kool-aid is wild. The new Atlanta vibe is mediocre. Old Atlanta would never entertain such lackluster talents. And we paid $20 for parking. Never again. Never ever. At Apache on 3rd I always had a good time and loved the vibe of the crowd and the performers. But I never have to experience Apache XLR again. I loved the flowers on the ceiling though!

I was extremely excited to visit ApacheXLR because I loved the original Apache and anticipated a similar experience. I was in for a rude awakening. My sister was in town from Dallas and we were looking for a vibe like a nice jazz spot something low key, so we had 3 options on the table a hotel rooftop, Italian restaurant jazz set or Apache. It was 5 of us going so Apache won and was the location we decided on. We looked at the website it said it was $10 advanced admission(via eventbrite) or $15 cash at the door, and 3 best options for parking was in the gravel parking lot across the street, if lot is full park 1 block up or on the street. Table reservations are suggested, however not necessary and only available for purchase online. We were going to get a table of course, which was $78 and did not include admission price. Paid for the table in advance not a problem, we were so excited to get our Sunday vibe on at this point. Location check, table reserved check, cute outfits and hair done check, we was ready! Get to the location and per website we went to park in one of the 3 best parking options (per their website), which was across the street in the gravel parking lot, told it was $20 for parking, now why is that not simply stated on the website? There were 2 lots across the street the one with gravel($20) and one paved with security($10-$15). I didn't understand why paid parking wasn't mentioned at all. We paid the parking fee and just decided to let it go at this point we were going in to have a great time and wasn't going to let that little miscommunication from their website bother us. We arrived around 8:15, doors opened at 8pm and as stated on their website if you weren't there by specified time your table was subject to be given away with no refunds. We go inside and greeted promptly, then was told the entry fee was now $20. Yes, of course we asked for Management at this point and were told they weren't at the venue. Ok, let's just stop right here for a moment. We were at an crossroads moment. Do we continue or turn around? From the information you were given up to this point what would you have done in this moment? Well, we chose to stay it was JUST $5 more dollars...right? We are seated at a booth table by the window, it was a nice space, art on the wall, great lighting, stage was in a good location as well. We were determined to have a great experience in spite of all the little hiccups on the venue's part. Our waitress arrives, great energy and positive disposition, she asked us for our drink order. We all asked for glasses of wine, she said we don't serve wine. Wine? Wait what? Were we being too fancy? Are you kidding me, so we should have looked at their drink menu on their website before deciding to come to this location. Honestly, who does that? Definitely looked at the food menu, didn't think about the drinks, everyone serves wine, right...wrong! Ok, we look at the drink menu and choose Lemon Drops $13 , we essentially ordered lemon water with a dash of vodka definitely a disappointment. I decided to get a cider(sold out) then chose a Miller High Life(sold out) at this point I was done. Waitress apologized and said they had a big party the night before and they were out of several items. Which is understandable. However, this whole experience was adding up to be a very unpleasant experience and we were still an hour from the show even starting. So, we were again at a crossroads moment, at this point what would you have done? Yep, you guessed it, we left. Money wasted, experience forever tarnished, and this review now written.

I was very impressed with this restaurant. We wanted to go to The Breakfast Club but they had over an hour wait and were glad we decided to give ApacheXLR a try. Everything was so good! The staff was very nice and attentive making sure we had everything we needed without being pushy. I had the French toast which was recommended by our server and it was the best french toast I've had. Not sweet but not too sweet without any syrup. Crunchy on the outside but still moist with the cream. I also got a side of potatoes which were to die for. Super crunchy and well seasoned. We're talking about coming back for breakfast tomorrow!

Me and my family visited from out of town. The vibe was okay and the server was nice. We were the only ones in there and it took us a while to get our food. The fish and grits were not good, not sure where they got the fish from but it was like frozen grocery store fish. Two of us ordered the fish and grits and we both were disgusted. I asked to change my order and was told that I couldn't, which was fine, however try to assist the customer in some kind of way. My cousin liked the avocado toast.

My goodness! I wish the owners of ApacheXLR could open up a location in DC so I could access this place more often. I came down to the A for my friend's series premiere that she is the executive producer, writer and actor for. Apache = Great experience. Great food, drinks, ambience and service. I ordered the fish & grits which I tried Geechie Boy Blue cheese grits for the first time. Check the photo to see the grits its natural color. HITTING. Like sooo bomb. Some of my friends sampled my food and thought the same. I also tried some of the other food options (chicken and waffles, spicy chicken sandwich, breakfast potatoes and so forth). I was at first bummed because I wanted the steak & eggs (super popular so they were out of steak) but I definitely enjoyed my meal and glad I went with it. Everything tasted so good and fresh. Three of us shared a mimosa pitcher (pineapple juice instead of OJ) and talk about being a little buzzlightyear, lol. Our server, Johnie was amazing. Super kind, gave great suggestions and made sure to get us all that we needed. The restaurant itself is pretty big and has a lot of cool artwork as well as a band setup (I think they have live music sometimes). I def recommend and will return whenever I'm back in the ATL

went here for brunch, it was fairly close to our hotel and we were able to make a reservation for 11:30. We were a little late but we were seated immediately. Love the aesthetic as well as the art. We were seated and greeted by our waitress with an amazing Afro! We ordered the chicken and waffles and the fish and grits. The food was good besides a few minor details. So the chicken and waffles were good but the chicken was slightly over cooked. Also my fish and grits was appetizing but I was definitely confused on the fact that my fish was fried in chicken batter. It was slightly confusing for I am a person that was expecting my fish to actually look like fish instead of the chicken the other person got. Overall it was a solid experience. read more

We went for brunch and it was super yummy and the live music was great! However, you can definitely tell this place isn't primarily a brunch place, as we had some drinks served in plastic cups. They also moved back my reservation by 30 minutes without notifying me, but ended up being able to seat me not very long after my original reservation. We got the french toast and the apache breakfast and they were both great! I also got a mimosa which was good. read more

What an unexpected treat this was for my husband and I for Sunday brunch. From start to finish, it was great. Drinks: excellent Bloody Mary with the perfect amount of kick. Food: fish and grits. Y'all. The gravy. A must order! The waffles are delicious and their take on French toast is so unique. Crispy on the outside and *just* underdone on the inside. Chef's kiss good. Atmosphere: exposed brick, local art, and great background music. Very eclectic, warm, and vibrant. Staff: attentive, so friendly, and they thought I looked like a young Heidi Klum so yeah, I'm a fan. Put this on your visit list...we plan to be back for the live music and events. read more

A HORRIBLE brunch experience, after having to wait 15 minutes I was able to place an order at the bar, for drink I was served a horrible, pre-mix made bloody mary, and after having to wait over 45 minutes in an empty restaurant the food was brought to me at which point I had already asked the staff to cancel my order, not only was the shift manager super rude and arguing, they wouldn't cancel or take back the order they also insisted that I pay full price of the food I had not consumed PLUS 18% GRATUITY. Being a local and a neighbor I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND AGAINST THE RESTAURANT! read more

Found this cafe when the popular Atlanta Breakfast Club's wait was 2 hours. Amazing food and great service! Don't let the outside discourage you. The inside restaurant area is bright and modern. The lamb chops eggs benedict was perfectly cooked and seasoned. Our server was very attentive and friendly. A+ experience! read more

I visited Apache XLR last Sunday for my birthday brunch. My fiancé made reservations for us weeks in advance. Although, we were running a little late for our reservations, they were very accommodating. Once we arrived, we were seated by the hostess and greeted by our waiter, Duke. I thought there was live music on Sundays, but he said it was only on Saturdays. However, they did have a R&B playlist playing, which was good. We started off by ordering drinks, which we ordered a Hennessy margarita and a spicy pineapple margarita. The drinks were decent, but I wasn't a fan of them being pre-mixed. For entrees, we ordered the chicken and waffles and the French toast (half order) with a side of boneless fried chicken breast. The French toast and the waffle was good, but the chicken could have been cleaner. There was a lot of yellow fat still on the chicken, which made it inedible for us to eat and enjoy it. Also, when my fiancé made the reservations and prior to going to the restaurant, he let them know it was my birthday. They said they do something for special occasions (i.e. bring out a cupcake with sparklers), but it didn't happen for me. When he inquired, Duke said the chef was already gone. Duke did bring me a birthday drink, but I think that's a detail that should have been remembered without having to remind the restaurant, especially when you've made them aware prior to during the reservation and called the day of. Overall, Apache XLR was okay, but there are some kinks that need to be worked out. read more

First off, the owner was in the back cooking. To me that shows a wonderful business where an owner does that! The potatoes were heaven sent. Literally will dream about it everyday! We came for a Saturday brunch at opening(10am) and had made reservations, which on that day were not necessary but are definitely recommended. The service was great. Our server was very helpful. The art on the walls is fabulous and the food was too! The menu had so many tasty sounding choices we couldn't decide, so we each got something different to share. The chiaquiles were solid, the waffles were light and fluffy ( group favorite), and the fried chicken was great with a little maple syrup in the batter. The breakfast potatoes were a hit, too. All the eggs were cooked correctly, i.e., over easy, etc. The Bloody Mary's were very flavorful, and the coffee was good. The salmon & Mac & cheese came out separately, but we mixed them together, and it was so flavorful. read more

Weekend brunch is the best here. The service is awesome and I love the live music / jazz element here! Today it was a flute player but they've got all sorts of outstanding talent acts that come in. The art and interior is also wonderful. Lastly the food, I've gotten the Chicken and Waffles and the French Toast. Both are very very yummy and highly recommend stopping in to try. read more

Excellent service. Excellent food. You MUST eat here for brunch. We had joined the waitlist at another breakfast spot near by but after nearly 90 minutes of waiting (after we were told it would be an hour) we found this gem! Chicken and waffles was phenomenal as was the Hong Kong French toast. It was so good and the service was so amazing that we made reservations to eat there again the next morning. Actually found this spot on Yelp for a Saturday brunch. We were visiting Atlanta for a concert, and waiting for our time slot for the Coca Cola museum. ApcheXLR is a 10 minute (tops) walk from the Aquarium/Coca Cola venues. It's a small spot and it looked like all the tables were not occupied not because of a shortage of customers, but staff. Although we snagged a reservation on Yelp, we had to wait 5-10 minutes longer until a table opened up. The hostess and our waitress were VERY friendly. All the food being served looked AMAZING and it was hard to make a choice. My hubby and I both ordered the "All Apache" and not only was it delicious, but soooooo much food. The coffee was a coffee lovers dream, except that it was served in a paper cup. Please get mugs to keep it warm and reduce waste. read more

Pro: most of the food was very good- the mac-n-cheese left something to be desired. Cons: we were not seated on time due to what appeared to be the staff was not ready (set-up). The show did not start on time but ended early, cramped seating, service was slow. Only a few very good ( worth the money) performers. It is very annoying to have people across the room recording video with a light constantly in your face, it made it hard to enjoy the performers. IMO, only go for the food. read more

This place is DOPE!!! I am so glad that we decided to come here for brunch after the aquarium. The walk wasn't bad... but the vibe here is tremendous! There is art on the wall that makes my spirit sing... of course that could have also been me singing along with the live music. If I come back to ATL, this will definitely be a stop! I'm giving Apache five stars for the yummy food, but ALSO their amazing hospitality! I was in Atlanta for business, so my schedule did not afford me to eat a meal while watching a live music set. Myself and two colleagues walked to the restaurant from our hotel at the exact hour and minute Google said they were open. The restaurant was empty, but the staff were ready for us and created us warmly! I unfortunately can't remember the person's name who served us but she went above and beyond in making recommendations and sharing about the uniqueness of the menu. One of the chefs from the kitchen even came out to see if we were pleased with our selections! I enjoyed the fried catfish with purple grits, and never had catfish battered and fried the way the way they prepared it! It was crispy like buttermilk fried chicken! And I completely devoured their Brussels sprouts!! I like Brussels but they can often be a hit or miss for me, but not these!! Definitely hit up Apache, show them some love and experience them love you right back! read more

Found Apache when we tried going to the popular Atlanta Breakfast Club. The insane wait at ABC had us look for another option and Apache was just about to open for brunch so we tried it. We were the first ones to arrive and sat in a beautifully painted room by a local artist. Our waitress was friendly and service was good. The food options had us excited and did not disappoint. I had the lamb Benedict and it was one of the beat Benedict options I've ever had. My girlfriends chicken and waffles were amazing (claiming they were the best she ever had as well). This spot deserves a chance and should be considered a top brunch spot around downtown. read more

I do have to say...this place has some amazing chicken and waffles. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. The coffee is kind of nasty though...but hey, it's caffeine. The interior is a little interesting..seems to be a brunch place by day and bar by night, but the vibes dont really fit. Our server was nice and friendly though! It's a little hard to find the entrance. You gotta walk through a yellow door if i remember correctly. read more

Happened to be walking by and saw a waitress come outside and we decided to try their brunch out. Customer service was AWESOME from entering to leaving!! Food was delicious!! We both got the All -Apache (eggs, waffle, potatoes, grits and bacon. We also tried a half order of their Hong Kong French toast. Everything was so good and flavorful and big portions! We didn't get any alcoholic drinks, but almost everyone else did and they looked good! The vibe was awesome too with great music playing. A DJ was setting up as we were leaving. Went here for brunch last Sunday! Got the french toast but it was personally way too hard for one of my friends who got the same dish and I. One friend got the chicken and waffles which I tried a piece of and were decent and another got the fried fish and grits. The grits were good-- and purple!! I don't like fish much so that was just okay to me but overall the customer service was decent and I love the live music. Only thing I'd really complain about is the leaking vent that seemingly needs to be cleaned or replaced above the waiting area. read more

The owners opened Apache Café for lunch at 11:00am on Monday April 9th 2001. Having spent the entire night awake in order to finish café recipes, they served just one table that day. You may want to call first, because the tables usually go fast. If you get there early you can get a table of 4, and I don't think there is a minimum. I've never had to pay a minimum and I've been going there over 5 years now.

By 2:10 we were told they were waiting on silverware. I inquired if we could be seated and have the silverware brought over due yo the extreme heat and not wanting to wait outside longer. We were finally seated and able to order. We ordered a mimosa carafe for the table and I ordered the salmon and grits. The. Mimosa was great and the salmon and grits were amazing. I would definitely order it again. We spoke with the manager regarding our waiting experience and they offered to comp the mimosa which was nice. Despite the experience with the heat I'd be willing to return.

We were told more grits would be brought out, but they never came. Another person in my party ordered the Southern seafood pasta, which had literally one piece of spinach in it. When she asked about it, the server responded that there was "more spinach coming." At that point, it became clear that Barney's is selling the illusion of luxury in order to justify premium prices for subpar food and service. It really was a TikTok trap after all. To make matters worse, when the check came, we were charged an additional $1.50 for eggs that already came with the meal. The explanation was that the eggs "came from the shell." Others in my party were also charged extra for liquor on top of the listed menu price for their drinks. Overall, I absolutely did not enjoy my experience here, and I will not be returning. Oh, and that other party that was visibly irritated with the wait had to wait even longer because there was a hair in their food.

My roommate and I attended the Open Mic Poetry night on Sun., Dec. 1. We arrived promptly at 7. The $7 cover charge was not too bad, but they only take cash at the door. We tried to park in the adjacent pay-to-park lot, but a dude (carrying a large hedge-trimmer, randomly enough) ran after us, waving a large hedge-trimmer. He then asked us not to park there and that parking in the alleyway was free on Sundays. A slightly frightening interaction, but helpful nonetheless. Unfortunately, the poetry did not start until 9:30 (2.5 hours after we had arrived). Most people ate dinner there. We were first-timers, so we thought it was more of a bar than a restaurant. The plantains were great, though, and reasonably priced, too! The fries, however, sucked. Tasted like frozen dollar store fare. We tried to order hummus but they were out. Sad. The lady next to us said it's her favorite appetizer there. The poetry was enjoyable. Some acts were good; others not so good. Such is the nature of Open Mic night, I suppose. It seems like most of the speakers were regulars though. The restroom situation was interesting---NOT in a good way. 3 single, dirty stalls for the whole place. So, plan your lavatory stops in advance (for girls, anyway. There was never a line in front of the men's stall. haha) and bring hand sanitizer. Also, there was a manually rotating art display during the poetry recitations, which was cool. I wish they had told us more about the artist(s), though. Apache in Atlanta delivered a memorable dining experience with a cool vibe and incredible talent all around. I ordered the fried pork chops with spinach and mashed potatoes, and let me tell you--the chops were seasoned to absolute perfection. Juicy, flavorful, and cooked just right. The mashed potatoes, although unfortunately cold, still had good flavor. The spinach balanced the dish nicely. Drinks were solid, though it did take a while--nearly 30 minutes--for my Red Bull to arrive. Service overall was just okay, but not a deal breaker. The atmosphere more than made up for it, with great live entertainment and a chill energy that's hard to find elsewhere. They also offer a military discount, which I greatly appreciate and salute. One suggestion: the seating could be more comfortable, but that could just be my body talking. Overall, I'll definitely be back. Apache gets my respect for flavor, vibe, and honoring service members. We stumbled upon this place for brunch when the popular place down the street had a two hour wait. And we are SO happy we did. This is a unique spot with a beautiful wall mural and chandeliers in the dining area with tons of natural light. I would recommend sitting here and not in the bar area/ Perfect brunch vibes. I ordered the chicken and waffles and they were phenomenal. The waffles were crispy enough on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside. Apache used to be a staple in Atalanta, now it's a gimmick. Don't come expecting the artistry of Old atl. It's just about money. Cover charge, plus money to sing up for what is supposedly called "open mic". Why I'm the world would anyone pay $50 just to preform at an open mic night event. Honestly this place is disrespectful to the original Apache and should change its name. Apache used to be a place to catch a vibe now mostly it's trap and rap hasn't been a vibe the whole night. My girlfriend and I went there just to order some jerk wings, and we were told that we had to pay a 7.00 cover charge each even tho we didn't want to go pass the entrance. Then the bartender had a nasty attitude and told me I couldn't order flats only, which is a lie because I've ordered flats only before. I was just given a bad vibe from them both.. It was Art Mondays 10/27/14 and honestly if the lady wasn't so rude at the door, we may have stayed. As a place of business, you can't treat people a certain way. The Bar Exam goes down tonight and every 3rd or 4th Friday at Apache Cafe. The Bar Exam is Atlanta's definitive open-mic, talent competition and showcase I host events regularly at Apache Cafe (The Bar Exam, Sound & Lyrics) and what i love most about Apache is the diversity of people that attend the events and the positive and enthusiastic energy that i get from the artist i meet. 1st Sundays at Apache Cafe are the worst. The Host Corey Whitehead is an egotistical joke. He pesters you the whole show to buy his artwork. But claims its in major tv shows. Lost-and-found items should be returned to their rightful owners without expectations of payment. I hope ownership takes this matter seriously and reviews how situations like this are handled in the future.
