This was my first time eating Sri Lankan food and it was a great experience. The food was excellent. I mean really, really good. Everything was bursting with flavor and textures and just thinking about it now makes me want more. The buffet was smaller than I'd expected but it's actually perfect. I think they do a larger brunch buffet, we had dinner. Seriously, every dish shined. They cooked egg hoppers to order so they were always fresh. I can't wait to go back. I could eat here once a week, at least. It is family owned and everything tastes like what I imagine home cooking would taste like in Sri Lanka. Soft spot! Being half Sri Lankan and visited a number of times, I can confidently say this place is authentic. I absolutely love this place and is my weak spot. I come here almost every week. This place is run by a Sri Lankan couple - both are extremely polite and hardworking. They have both a la carter and buffet on select days. They also cater to big orders. I have tried almost everything here and have had only praises and no complaints. A must try would be hoppers ( egg or plain ) with spicy chicken, beef, prawn or fish curry. Their vegetarian selection does not disappoint as well. It will be a very different experience if you haven't tried this kind of food. I can't believe that this wonderful Sri Lankan restaurant has been here for 27 years, and I just went to it for the first time. Loved everything about it, especially the huge selection of vegetarian options for every dish. The food is fresh, authentic, and utterly delicious, and does not use much oil to boot. Just about everything we ordered was wonderful, and the two people who run it (Lalith and Nisa -- apologies if I am spelling names wrong) are sweet and very kind. We ordered a bunch of things. My top favorites were the jackfruit curry, the string hoppers, the veggie lamprais -- and just about every one of the wonderful variety of veggie dishes they had. The gravy dishes -- Jackfruit curry, an awesome egg-and-potato curry, potato curry were soooo good. And the non-gravy veggie dishes were excellent as well -- the mango curry is an absolute delight, as were the green beans. Both the eggplant and beets were nice too, as were the hoppers, although I suspect those are best had fresh while at the restaurant especially since they are on the thin side. As one small example of how considerate the people who run Apey Kade are, Lali packed the foods in such a considerate way and put a little bit of doubled-up tape on the side of each to-go container, so it would be easier to open instead of having to spend frustrating moments trying to locate the edge of the tape...especially when you're hungry and the yummy smells are driving you nuts! read more

I called in concerned it would be too spicy for me and the nice owner told me that it is not hot spicy but flavor spicy and he kindly put a vegetarian meal wrapped in a banana leaf on the side for me. Pardon me as I do not know what this is called. Super friendly when I got there and WOW! This was one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted! SO MUCH FLAVOR! And, yes it was spicy but not too spicy and I am too hot intolerant. It was very flavorful! I would say it is a light medium/medium spicy with a lot of flavor! We did forget one kotthu (mutton) since it was a large order - :) The owner offered us free cup of milk tea after dinner, which was a pleasant surprise. I had the Beef Kotthu it was top notch and my husband had the Chicken Lamprais ( which is his all time favorite) and he said this was what he remembers having in Sri Lanka! I was visiting from Michigan and I wanted to take my friends to an authentic Sri Lankan Restaurant. It's hard to describe how delicious Sri Lankan food is without actually eating it since it's sort of like Indian food but it's wonderfully different in its own way. We were not disappointed! The couple that owns the restaurant are so nice and they were so helpful with picking out a variety of foods for my friends to try out. We came over during the lunch buffet but I wanted different items that weren't out so I ordered a variety of items off the menu. We all enjoyed fish cutlets, egg hoppers, coconut sambol, lunumiris (carmelized onions with spices), Dahl curry, jackfruit curry, potato curry, string hoppers, and eggplant curry. Everything was delicious and it tasted similar to how my mom makes it. My friends enjoyed it all as well. As a Sri Lankan, I highly recommend this place for anyone that wants to try out Sri Lankan food. It is a smaller space but there are more tables upstairs for dining in. After dinner we bought some iced coffee and mango lassi to go. They tasted exactly like they do in Sri Lanka so I savored it till the last drop. I had Dinner buffet and was disapointed. They charge $14.99 for lunch and dinner buffet. Variety of dishes offered is not enough, and the food didn't taste good. The buffet shouldn't be more than $9.99. They are overchaging the customers. I won't go back here for the buffet. Cutlets, rolls, patties are tasty but spicy and a bit expensive. Chicken Lamprais is tasty but too spicy and way too oily. Again too expensive $12.99, should be like $10.99. By the time you finished eating you have to drink lot of water because the food is too oily and eat ton of sugar to overcome the spiciness. I am giving two stars because the food is too spicy, oily and expensive. They need to reduce the spicyness so everyone can enjoy the food, and cut down the price so most people can afford to come and eat. read more

The BEST!! Really. And yes, I'm Sri Lankan, so I know the real deal. Lalith and Niza are a joy to see every time and it is well worth the trek to go to Apey Kade. My top fave is the eggplant curry and their Pol Sambol is legit! Ask for fried chilies to go with your meal, lovely nuttiness but not too spicy. They also always have a very inventive curry or two, like pineapple or cashew- get a scoop of that! If they have any on hand, make sure to take home a Lampries or two. This place was recommended by my Sri Lankan friend. When we walked in, we were greeted by the friendly owner and her family and seated as promptly. My first impression of the place was how much it smelled and felt like someone's home kitchen. Not knowing what to order, the owner had suggested the lunch buffet so we could sample a variety of dishes. The chicken curry and pineapple curry was amazing... and so were the variety of rice dishes. We also had their chicken kottu roti, which was prepared fresh in front of us. We ended this wonderful meal with some chocolate biscuit pudding and wattalapam (a cardamom infused egg-based flan sort of)... all to die for! Sunday Brunch Buffet is the best time to come if you want to try the most varieties of food according to the restaurant owner. They make everything from scratch, including the delicious and spicy sambals. Highly recommend the coconut sambal. It traditionally goes atop the home made vermicelli that is served for breakfast. I couldn't help but put the sambal atop everything. The delicious buttery coconut made me dig in despite the spicy bite from the bright red peppers. While I was dining an adorable little girl plopped down next to me and asked if I had tried the eggplant yet. In fact, I had been devouring the creamy, roasted eggplant with great pleasure. It had a slight tinge of sourness that was unexpected and tasty. The little girl declared "Its my first time eating eggplant. It is a little oily, it's ok to say if it's oily. I say it and if u think so it's ok." I LOL'd at her precociousness. She was so freaking adorable. The eggplant was not oily and absolutely perfect. We're are Sri Lankans living in Nor-Cal and this place was one of the highlights of our recent trip to So-Cal. "Apey Kade" is a Sinhala slang phrase that roughly means "our neighborhood shop". And I think that's what this place strives to be for the expatriate Sri Lankan. If other people like it - that's just a bonus. Food is spiced to a level that's almost as much as Sri Lanka - worked out great for us. There is no fancy ambience here, it's homely and small. But the food is great, prices way cheap for the labor intensive Sri Lankan items they serve, and the couple who own and work there are super nice and friendly. They had a health inspection 'A' rating displayed. The kitchen is literally behind the counter and it's self-service. So you can chat with the owners, make any special requests and watch as they make food. We walked in late Friday on a holiday weekend July 5th and ate a crazy amount of food from an all you can eat buffet of hoppers, string hoppers, and thosai. We got a fresh godamba roti on the house since they were making some for a koththu order. Some of the best thosai I've ever had and the coconut chutney/sambol like side was fantastic. I'm lucky to have family/friends who make hoppers and I think the hoppers here came close to theirs. There was an awesome spicy dry pepper chicken curry/stir fry too. We ordered a couple of tasty chinese rolls too. We chatted with the owners and since we had a cooler with us in the car we decided to take some food home the next morning. We got frozen lump rice packets, frozen chineese rolls and cutlets. They packed in zip lock bags and gave us dry ice on the house. We saw some fresh hot lentil vadai in their display and ate some and also took warm malu paan to eat in the car for lunch. Total bill was way, way, cheaper than bay area prices for this stuff.
