This eatery has been around for a while, been always consistent in its high quality and therefore become a magnet for that hungry craving and adventurous foodie. Of the handful of Sri Lankan establishments in the SFV and its vicinities, Apey Kade provides the largest selection of staples, main dishes and those addicting appetizers called "short eats". Be it the fish roll (also called a Chinese roll), the cutlet, the patties, masala vadai, the scotch egg or the bacon & egg pastry, to name a few, everything is good here. For the mains, they have meals for string hoppers, hoppers, godamba rotis, pol roti and more. Let us not forget the ubiquitous rice and curry, the banana leaf rice packets and the lumprais. Important to note, for those that question it, Sri Lankan curries have a very different aroma, flavor and taste profile than food from any other country. The offerings here, are fresh and cooked with high quality Sri Lankan spices and ingredients. The pol (coconut) sambol is a must, it is intoxicating. Apey Kade is helmed by a delightful husband (Lalith) and wife (Niza) team, who are the culinary trifecta - owners, chefs and servers, at this small and cozy restaurant. Their humor, warmth and Sri Lankan hospitality, enhances the culinary dining (or to go) experience, that makes you desire to come back here, again and again.

I was comfortably surrounded by locals, which always makes me feel like I've found something special. I sat at a small table for two by the window. The lighting was warm and sunset-like--bright enough to read the menu and feel alive, yet ambient, like the height of golden hour. The space felt sophisticated but still chill and low-key. It was airy, almost like dining inside a series of curtained cabanas. The service was excellent: attentive without being stuffy or haughty. When I asked for recommendations, I received confident and specific answers. The food arrived fairly quickly, and my appetizers came out with perfect timing, giving me plenty of time to enjoy them before my entrée arrived. I ordered the Mackerel Croquette and the Shrimp Kurrypanada. I enjoyed both. The croquette was mild and flavorful without tasting fishy. The shrimp kurrypanada had deep flavor, and there was shrimp in every single bite. I give both a 7.8/10. Next came the Mango Pineapple Lassee. Perfection. Not too sweet and not too thick. I almost drank the entire thing before my dinner arrived, but somehow managed to hold back. By the end of the meal, though, every last drop was gone. 10/10. For my main course, I ordered the Deviled Chicken. It tasted like Sri Lankan soul food--deeply spiced and tossed with fresh tomato, onion, and bell pepper. Smoky, spicy, and absolutely phenomenal paired with the fried rice, which was lighter and airier than Chinese fried rice while still holding its own flavor-wise. I give it an 8/10. Overall, this was a wonderful dining experience. Great atmosphere, excellent service, and flavorful food. So yeah... I left here feeling like I had just returned from a solo trip to Sri Lanka.

Yet, a food and culture that is centuries old, so unique, different, yet tasty, spicy and unforgettable. It is immersed in the history and culture of its people. LA and NY are the only cities with several Sri Lankan restaurants. It is still not enough, because our city food writers, in the major publications totally ignore to highlight or even praise Sri Lankan food. Why is this cuisine not on the top 101 LA Restaurants list? When I come to Kandy Kaffe, I try to set up my schedule to be at their Saturday Buffet. I am not a big eater. But I like buffets for one reason. For me, they are like self serving tasting menus. That is the crux. This restaurant has a large selection of Sri Lankan favorites and staples. Freshly prepared to order Egg hoppers are dynamite. String Hoppers and curries take you to another place. Numerous meat and vegetable selections. Service here, as always, is caring, friendly and nothing short of excellent.

I decided to go with the Mongolian hot bar I piled on cabbage, all vegetables with one egg and house sauce. I tried the fruit the watermelon and cantaloupe wasn't sweet, however, the honeydew was really yummy. They have a boba drink station I tried the passion tea it was good. My boyfriend tried their desserts he liked the three layer mouse cake. I wasn't aware the Restaurant in LA charge a 10% service fee when I saw it on the bill I immediately was going to question it however, I googled first and basically the restaurants have to post it before charging you. When we walked in we didn't notice the signs on the wall if you don't pay attention you will miss the notice as you walk in. The 10% is to help the owner offset gratuity and healthcare for the employees so you have no choice but to pay it even if you didn't see the posting on the wall. They also have a sign to say a tip is not required because of the service fee.
