I was able to share the deliciousness of Appu's Cafe with my girls this past Sunday. I've tried just about everything on the menu and can honestly say it's all yummy. Vegan Mushroom Masala, a Maharaja bowl with Avocado added, a basket of Roti, the taco trio of the 3 versions (vegan mushroom, saag saneer, Paneer) and Vegan Mango Lassi & Lemongrass Chai to drink. I can't say enough about the food. Delicate soulful flavors and delicious turmeric rice. The salad on the tacos was yummy and flavorful. Try your favorite and then go back and try something new, you can't go wrong. The service is cordial and quick enough; always welcoming and willing to help with dietary restrictions and suggestions when you just can't make up your mind. Ambiance is ok, the space is utilitarian but has a nice vibe and even just after opening during our visit was quickly filled with hungry happy diners. One thing I have noticed after a couple of visits, you are asked what's good from new comers. Let me just start by saying how grateful I am for this entire culinary experience. We went to Appu's THREE times during our week long stay in LA. At first it just to be appeared a great place for vegetarians like us, a place to fill our bellies; little did we know that we'd walk out of here with even fuller hearts. Their story, their food, our gracious host Chef VR, everything was just absolute perfection. Chef and his family started this restaurant for their wonderful Nanny who'd been with them for so long and because she's an amazing chef herself and makes really good Mexican Indian fusion cuisine. She is present at the cafe if you go before 12pm everyday. Chef VR has learnt and perfected (he'd disagree with me here haha) nourishment through veganism. Coming to the food, we ordered SO MUCH food over the three days that we were here. Listing them for easy reference, we got: 1) Saag Paneer Tacos 2) Desi Quesarita 3) Mix and Match Tacos 4) Maharani Bowl 5) Maharani Burrito 6) North Indian Thali (dessert included) 7) South Indian Thali (dessert included but the thali has limited availability) 8) Vegan Mango Lassi 9) Lemongrass Chai (Hot) The reason it's called Turmeric Cafe is is because they put turmeric in everything due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Literally everything! And it tastes DIVINE! I was so excited by the food that I forgot to click most pictures but that's just a testament to their clean, healthy and insanely delicious food. Chef VR was extremely kind and generous in his approach with us where in one of our visits he gave us complimentary samosas and on the other, he was testing a south indian thali for a future event and offered it to me for around the same price as the north indian thali even though it wasn't officially on the menu yet, all because he knew how I loved south indian food. All the food we had was perfectly flavored and nutritionally balanced. They cafe uses only the most natural and organic ingredients. Their samosas are baked and their desserts are flavoured with traditional jaggery. They use coconut milk in all of their dairy based dishes. There are no deep frying or refined sugar health scares here. Not under Chef VR's watch. I will always cherish the memories I made here. Chef VR is nothing less than family anymore. He sat with us and engaged in such spirited conversations with us, it felt just like home. I cannot wait to go back and indulge in all the love and warmth again. Thank you for having us! read more

When we arrived, I was a little put off by the menu, as there were some traditional Indian dishes, as well as tacos and burritos. However, the tacos and burritos were made with an indian flare. I ordered the Paneer Tikka Masala and my partner chose the Vegan Mushroom Masala and we shared a Bread Flight. (The Masala's also come with rice.) The staff were very friendly and outgoing and the food was really fresh and flavorful. There's plenty of parking and it wasn't too crowded. The dishes here are aromatic, creative and richly flavorful. These plates are a healthy choice greatly enjoyed by my family and friends. Today I tried the baked NOT FRIED samosas in a gorgeous garbanzo soup topped with a strawberry tamarind chutney. The crunchy strips of garbanzos were a tasty addition. Thoroughly enjoyed my first taste of Appu's. Highly recommend for those who live near or afar.

I was thrilled to hear Appu's was opening an official storefront and so close to my house. I was going to be in that plaza yesterday around lunch so I decided to try the online ordering - it was really easy and each dish had a description and picture so I knew what I was getting. Also since it's their own website there's no markup like Postmates and GrubHub. My order was ready on time and the perfect temperature. The staff were super friendly and the place was immaculate inside I tried the Mushroom Masala with turmeric rice and it was delicious. Enough for two lunches. I also added a chai and flatbread both were delightful. The icing on the cake is they use environmentally friendly packaging on all of their to go orders. I mean how great is that??? Pretty excited to call this my new lunch spot. read more
