Yelp recommended this place to me because I typically enjoy Indian cuisine. One thing I always have trouble with when eating Indian food is the amount of dairy mixed in with the deep and delicious flavors. Talk about catch-22! Upon meeting the staff, I realized that this place was not your average fast-casual restaurant. Everyone was so pleasant and welcoming. Lots of recommendations from them and they were NOT pushy. I ended up ordering The Vegan Maharani burrito with avocado along with a Vegan Mango Lassi. I got the Cinnamon Crisp for good measure. Food: Flavorful. Clean-tasting. Cohesive. The burrito had the deep flavors you'd expect from Indian rice dishes - just wrapped up in a nice, crispy burrito! Definitely add pico de gallo and the spicy chutney for an extra layer of flavor. The mango lassi was creamy, sweet, with a tad bit of spice from the cinnamon. Delicious. I need a gallon for the house. The cinnamon crisp!! It's similar to a Mexican pan dulce, "Oreja". Since then I've gotten to know him and and the food here at Appus very well. I attended a Yelp Elite event here recently for the grand opening and the food is just as good at this location if not a little better. Def try the Maharaja burrito or the Maharani for you Queens. Went here for lunch and had the Saag Paneer plus the Indian Flatbread. Although they show pictures of this served in a nice china bowl, it was served in paper take-out containers. At first, I thought they had misheard when I said I would "eat here" but then I distinctly remember the server telling me to take a seat and they would bring it to me. The Sag Paneer wasn't thick like in most Indian restaurants but more like spicy spinach soup. The blocks of cheese were small and lacked taste. The flatbread was ok but the ones at Uncle Fung's at 7th and PCH are much, much better. The rice was also not very interesting. This meal cost me over $20 with tax, before tip, and without a drink. I could get much more and much better for a similar price at Kamal Palace's lunch buffet just a few miles away. I really don't know what the owners of this restaurant are thinking. read more

This is the exact place Long Beach needed. My daughter loves the Indian flat bread and she says the soup is delicious!! If it were up to her, we would eat here every night! I just love both Appu's Cafes (this new one "Tumeric Cafe" near CSULB and the original on Woodruff). The tacos are my family's favorites, but honestly each dish is so tasty and fulfilling. It's so easy to place an order and pick up a satisfying meal on your way home. Definitely try the curries with rice too. Saag Paneer is my absolute favorite and the Paneer Tikka Masala is addictive, both in the curry and taco form. You'll love the chef and his team. Some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. They remember you, and they are alway cheerful and you feel as if you just visited good friends or family. There is a real community feel here that is missing from many other restaurants. Plus, they go out of their way to make the food healthy. It's all these little touches that make me choose Appu's over other restaurants time and again. Definitely go. The bowls although tasty are tiny and not really a lunch portion . They should have two sizes - the current one a child's size and bigger one for adults .
