My daughter and I had a fantastic experience at Hep Kat last week, where we were encouraged to "play dress-up" by a very friendly woman in the store who had blonde hair and glasses (whose name sadly escapes me). She was very knowledgeable about the stock and was able to make recommendations about which brands require a size up and seemed to understand my daughter's delight for 1960's mod immediately. This was by far the best clothes shopping experience I've ever had. I came in to browse the cute selection of vintage dresses. First, I love how most of the dresses have POCKETS. Next, the sales associate (I should have gotten her name) was so welcoming! She instantly came over and encouraged me to try the dresses I was eyeing but also picked out a ton she thought might look good on me. As I was in the dressing room, she kept bringing me even more dresses to try on without pressuring me to purchase anything and kept the feedback light and honest. She also gave me tips on how to wash the dresses and a bit about the designer. It's super hard for me to find dresses that fit, make me feel good, something I can wear at and outside of work, and has POCKETS! I am usually so frustrated when I'm clothes shopping because the clothes never fit right, but I'm so thankful for my experience here and the lovely associates for helping me find a cute, vintage, and high quality dress I can wear. She encouraged me to keep clothes shopping fun, and helped me keep a tracker on my husband while I was in the changing room. read more

Awesome place to check out. They got vintage clothes and accessories along with pop culture wearables to boot! They got vintage dresses including wonderful flapper dresses! It is on the pricey side but they were so nice to let you wear some of their clothes. I was eyeing their Doctor Martin's boots and unfortunately they don't carry my size. My family comes out to SLO once a year and we usually come downtown to shop. I like stopping in this store to look around and I've found some really cute things here before. But my most recent visit here wasn't as pleasant as before. Usually I come in looking for accessories, but when I was here this past weekend I had a few sales associates encourage me to try on dresses. After finally giving in I made it clear I was only going to try on the ones I picked but the sales lady had literally picked 5 dresses for me to try. Even after I chose a dress I picked myself the sales people were still trying to push other accessories and products on me. The whole time I was there I felt like they were trying to make my decisions for me. Which dresses to try, which size to wear, etc. I REALLY like this store, but keep your guard up if you go in. I was initially drawn into Hep Kat by the bright patterns in that 50's style I love so much. I found a great dress, and I liked it but it wasn't really ME. I was a bit pressed for time so I was reluctant when a sales woman (Sam) offered to show me a different dress that she thought would be a good fit. As soon as I zipped up the dress and saw my reflection, I melted. I don't think I've ever found something as well-fitting and figure-flattering in my 25 orbits around the sun. I was very impressed not only with the size of this tore and it's selection, but with the high level of friendly service I received. I located this store after seeing them listed on the Rock Steady clothing website as a retailer and decided to go during my recent visit to central California. I was very pleased at how many great vintage repro lines they carry, including Voodoo Vixen, Rock Steady, hell bunny, and stop staring! but was surprised they didn't know who Miss Candy Floss was. I was very happy to find the staff had grabbed extra items for me to try on, 2 of which I ended up leaving with: a gorgeous voodoo vixen dress and FINALLY some swing trousers that fit well, and the mint fox dress from Heart of Haute. Clothing here is SO Incredibly flattering! If I had an unlimited bank account I would buy all my dresses from here. They're incredibly well-made as well, well worth shelling out extra money. I shelled out on a polka-dot number that has been worn by many a friend/sister and it still has a good century or two of mileage left in it. ;) I've also been quite happy with their salon for eyebrow waxing. I used to be a huge fan of this shop despite their ridiculous prices! I've even purchased dresses from them in the past, but lately every single time I step into the store I'm treated with the worst customer service imaginable. The older lady with shorter hair who appears to be a store manager or possible owner treats customers with so much disrespect and truly makes me uncomfortable. She goes out of her way to comment on every single thing you do, glares at you if you even look at a dress and will even straight up insult you. I've never felt so upset after a shopping experience and I'll definitely never return. They've lost a paying customer and browsing through the reviews here I've noticed I'm not alone in my negative experiences! I used to recommend all of my friends to this business but now I'm doing the opposite. I'd rather order the exact same dresses online for half the price then give my money to that witch of a woman. read more

Had the best time shopping here. I couldn't decide between two dresses in the same color and got help not only from the staff but from other customers too. I ended up getting 2 dresses and wearing one of them out to a dinner I was headed to. Not only are the options here awesome but the prices (which people have complained about) match the quality. Go to Forever 21 if you want a cheap dress that won't hold up after a couple washings and wears. These dresses are extremely well made and have pockets!!! read more

Super cool, hip pin up girl style clothing store. The prices were a bit shocking ($170) on the dresses compared to what I've ordered online but they had a great selection! Quite a few of the dresses, tops, skirts that I liked seemed to lack my size (maybe in between restocking days?). I did end up walking out with an adorable red pencil skirt for a good price and look forward to adding it to my collection. All in all, I would love to see this store make its way to Mpls and would definitely shop there again and again! read more

I love Hep Kat! They know just how to find you the perfect dress to flatter what curves you do (or don't) have! And you're guaranteed to get tons of compliments in dresses from here. My advice is: listen to the sales girls. They know what they're talking about when they tell you that you need a Large when you're usually a small, or whatever the case may be. Some of these brands/materials just fit differently... So listen to the experts! You don't want to be looking like you're stuffed in a sausage casing when you've just paid $150 for a new dress. I love that they bring you heels to complete the look, once you're in the dressing room they keep the dresses coming, and often find a style you wouldn't pick out for yourself but ends up being the perfect one! If you need a nice dress for an occasion, or just to feel like a million bucks for no reason at all, bring someone who's opinion you trust and head to Hep Kat, or just ask the sales girls because they don't earn commission and will tell you the truth! You'll walk out proud of your new outfit, and it will last for many years (I'm still regularly wearing a dress from 7 yrs ago and it looks/ feels brand new) and love all the dresses/skirts I've bought since then as well. read more

Stopped in on a whim while trying to kill some time before our Tolosa winery tour and SOO glad we did. I'm a busty and curvy woman who has recently fell in love with pin up clothing simply because of how well it fits my body. (And my husband loves it, too!) I found a few dresses I thought I'd love and the shop owner threw in some others she thought would look fab. I was scared to try on her suggestions as they were more pencil-style and I was used to more outward flowy to not show off certain "bad" aspects of my hips and abdomen. However, they fit like a glove and all in the right way! We couldn't decide on 1 dress so we bought 3! The killer for me was when she said she had size 11 and 12 try on shoes and had those sizes in the store for purchase!!! BE STILL MY BEATING HEART! Spotted this place from the street corner heading up to Luna Red and made a beeline for it the next day--looks are deceiving, you might think this is just a hair salon trying to make some extra bucks by selling vintage reproduction clothing but SURPRISE!! They have a full-on boutique for all your punky, rockabilly, pinup, greaser, hot-rod, vintage queen needs to rival Bettie Page Clothing and 23Skidoo in the Bay Area. In fact, I was pleased to see they carry Bettie Page and Stop Staring! in a variety of sizes since both brands run extremely small and most stores only carry up to L (which is a S for most people in Stop Staring!, truth talk). It looks like just a few racks up front, but head to the back on the right and you'll find dresses, separates, men's and kids' clothing galore! Better quality than 23Skidoo in Campbell and more selection than Bettie Page. My very patient roadtrip companion and I basically tore through the racks and I slammed into one of the dressing rooms to try on everything in the store. Several dresses were wonderful, I came out with one I was very happy with (now that I am going full-time 1940s with my wardrobe) at a price that is very competitive with both Bettie Page and online retailers. It would be nice if they had a sale rack to peruse, for sure!! The saleswoman was very complimentary in a non-obtrusive way, she tried to get me in a pair of wildly impossible spike platform heels but I resisted out of sheer prudence. If you appreciate timeless clothing, this is THE place to go. I've been to both the salon and the clothing store and they're both pretty good. I absolutely love their clothing! it's well made, classic and flattering for a curvy figure. The staff is extremely eager, knowledgeable and helpful and they don't work on commission, so any help they offer is genuinely because they love clothes. A little pricey, but worth it for styles that are timeless and quality that lasts. The salon has generally been hit or miss. I've gotten one AMAZING hair cut here, one mediocre and one that made me want to cry. Same with the eyebrow waxing. I had one girl do a beautiful job and one girl actually rip my skin off and pretend like it didn't happen. Overall, I highly recommend the clothing store, but feel unsure about the salon. read more

I was lucky enough to get an appointment with Stefani at the Ink n Iron Festival last weekend. After numerous bobby pins, I had the most amazing updo I have ever had! It didn't stop there. She did my make up as well! She and the other people from HepKat were so accomodating and totally talented! I happened to be in the area from Arizona. I found this place on yelp and spent a full two hours in complete bliss trying on half the store! I am a very petite woman 4'11 at 103 pounds and found these dresses to be a great fit for me... I loved the quality and the customer service! She helped me find like styles to my original choices.
