First time here and it was just as good as I've heard others describe: great food and wide variety of seasonal selections, a lovely bar/cocktail collection, yummy appetizers and top-notch service. Not too busy on a Tuesday night and the entire wait staff was courteous, helpful and attentive. I had the seasonal seafood gapow and the serving was plentiful and delicious. The only thing I might change up next time is medium heat on the spice level as the mild was truly mild. You never know first time at a new restaurant but now I know! Our server, Cody, did a superb job with our table of 4 and our meal was nicely paced from pre-dinner cocktails through the final dessert and drinks over about a two hour time frame. The restaurant was quiet enough to carry on conversation and as we left I thought the outside patio looked charming for a future meal. We decided for dessert to spring for their Bananas Foster prepared tableside and that was fabulous! Overall, a quality dining experience right here in Leawood and we plan to be back again soon! We went here for brunch on a whim to celebrate my mom's birthday and I am so glad we did! Everything was great. Our service was timely & attentive. The patio area is BEAUTIFUL! Lots of greenery and flowers. We started off with the muffin & pastry basket and I think the blueberry muffins were the best I've ever had. We ordered the lobster roll, avocado toast, biscuits and gravy, and the seafood crepes. Everything was delicious, though I wasn't the biggest fan of the biscuits and gravy. It was a little too salty for our liking, but still good. The thing that made it so wonderful is that they did so many things to celebrate my mom's birthday and make it special. Love this place! I went here for lunch with my husband and our two small children. They don't have a kids menu, but our waiter Blue made them feel so welcomed and helped us out a ton to make sure they had what they needed and the table was kid proofed. She was awesome!! Red, the bartender, also was so sweet with them and gave them little cocktail decorations and Swedish fish, which made them light up! The kids loved the mac & cheese and fries. I love Bamboo Penny and seafood so was really looking forward to trying the new place. My experience started off a little awkward. I have them the name of the reservation and then waited for a response. Three staff members were looking at the computer and seemed to be figuring something out ... but didn't let me in on what was happening. I eventually found a chair to sit in while I waited. Then the hostess came over to me to seat me but didn't explain anything ... just asked if I wanted to say in the seat to wait. Awkward. As I reviewed the extensive menus I found the cute name for things took much time to read and decipher. The food server asked if I wanted a drink other than water while I was waiting but I was quite honestly trying to understand the drink menu offerings. While reading, my seat back was being kicked by a child or two on the other side. I asked our food server if the two of us could move tables to another one which was exactly the same seating size. He seemed to get nervous and couldn't problem solve and said he has to speak with the manager. However instead of resolving my issue he went to another table of guests. We did move however I felt perplexed at this point. One hour into our visit we had a drink and a salad. I was probably asked at least four times if I would like to order another drink. Eventually our entrees arrived which were quite spectacular. We ordered a side of asparagus as the entrees do not come with much in the way of vegetables. However, a side only included 4-5 small spears which we shared. For the price and portion of the entrees I would like to see some vegetables included. The space is beautifully decorated and modern and the music playing added to the ambiance. The food is delicious but don't go too hungry or you may spend a small fortune. read more

We love Bamboo Penny's so we were so excited to see that Aqua Penny's has opened. I made a reservation and would recommend doing that as more tables began to fill after we arrived. I loved the space and how well decorated it is. There is also plenty of outdoor seating. To start, I had the Pear Witch cocktail. I loved this drink! It was not too sweet and had a hint of lavender flavor. I would absolutely get this drink again. We ordered the baked shrimp and crab dip as our starter. This came with the house made crackers and bread. This dip was very good and had very creamy texture. It was best with the cracker (the bread was also good). For our main dish, we shared the crispy seafood platter. This was so much food and absolutely enough for two people. The scallops were by far the best. They were very large and had a very tender texture. The shrimp were huge and very juicy and flavorful. I would absolutely order this platter again! We also had the berry cobbler with a scoop of ice cream. I highly recommend getting the ice cream if you do order the cobbler. I tried this place so you don't have to. For an appetizer I started with a Trio of Spreads where you choose 3 out of maybe 7 or 8 options. I chose whipped goat cheese, pimento cheese and olive tapenade. It is served with lavosh, burnt crostini and cafeteria style sliced vegetables. The goat cheese had some odd taste, possibly dill? The pimento cheese was equally inedible. The olive tapenade was fine. At least they did not do anything weird to it. I suppose the chef just has a unique palate. And then the Salmon Wellington. Sounds delicious, right? The server could not stop talking about how great the chorizo makes it. I like chorizo, but in this dish it is overpowering. Even in bites that did not include it, all I could taste was chorizo. Also, it is plated as a fully enclosed pastry rather than sliced open as one might expect for an appealing presentation. Both cocktails I had were horrible. A Negroni is not for everyone, but for those of us who love them, the bitterness is a fundamental component. They replace the Campari with something sweet rather than bitter. I also was unable to drink a martini that was sweet rather than traditional, despite not being described as such. Service: My server was very friendly, but did not make any effort at accommodating despite seeing I ate and drank very little of anything. Additionally, he told me everything I ordered was his favorite. Perhaps he should cut back on that when his "favorites" are not consumed by his guest. There is an item on the menu with a name that could be triggering to many guests, and it seems the owners want to go out of the way to make sure folks know what side of a volatile issue they are on, making sure to give a strong slap in the face to those on the side of humanity. As for the clientele, I'd planned to sit at the bar, but three pretentious looking people were spread across 6 chairs, and the staff did not seem concerned to accommodate other guests. read more

I couldn't do 4.5 so graded on a curve as I eat a lot of good seafood when traveling Crab cakes were delish, the bisque was too. Service is fantastic and I like the redecorating they have done. I realllyyyyy wanted to like this place. I never write reviews but I felt it's necessary since they are a newer business and have higher prices than some. When I go out somewhere I expect if I'm paying over 200 dollars for the bill that I like the food better than my own cooking. We got the seafood tower. The oysters were good and so were the shrimp, but everything else. You could just tell it was de frosting. I would give that meal a 6/10 but it the other things we received that really disappointed us. The crab cakes were not cooked. Basically mush. The calamari was cold and not crispy, and the lobster mac gratin had absolutely no flavor and could not taste any cheese. This was all a 1.5/10 We also didn't receive our drinks until after our food came. To say the least I'm incredibly disappointed with not only the service but the food as well. This was supposed to be a birthday dinner and it was quite frankly a bust. Was recommended to check out Aqua Pennys and it was great! So happy our friends told us to check it out. Popped in for happy hour at the bar, Alex took great care of us and then we decided to stay for dinner! Oysters were great and the Ahi crudo was out of this world. Did the beet salad, crab cakes and truffle fries also and that did us in. Everything was delicious and looked amazing. Didn't get any pictures as we try to stay off phones while eating together. Some people next to us had grouper and the macaroni gratin and will definitely be giving that a go next visit, which will be soon. Great bar to dine at, drinks were delicious and service was perfect. I provided an extensive review regarding our dinner at Aqua Penny's and I noticed that while it initially posted, it is no longer there. I took my wife here for her 65th birthday and well we are regulars at Bamboo Penny's, this was our first time at Aqua Penny's. The two restaurants could not be further apart in regards to the taste and quality of the food. The appetizer, Penny's Puffs, tasted like cat food and for $14 we were given two puffs. The wedge salad came with blue cheese dressing, which was less flavorful than a commercial brand from the grocery store. The crab curry that I ordered at $44 had almost no crab in it at all and very little sauce. I don't understand how this restaurant is going to stay in business without many adjustments. My recommendation would be to stick with Bamboo Penny's. read more

First, let me say I do not eat seafood, but it was such a fabulous experience, I can't wait to go back. There aren't too many non-seafood options, that would be my only negative. It is a seafood place, so I get it. I sat at the bar with a girlfriend. They have a good happy hour and the service was amazing and attentive. They have weekly specialty cocktails and I still couldn't tell you what was in mine, but it was fabulous. It was there take on a margarita. It was clear and a little sweet (to offset the tequila). I wish they had it on the menu all the time! My friend got the shrimp cocktail and loved it. It was also fun watching finishing touches on some of the plates behind the bar. The restaurant was extremely clean and they were well organized with plenty of staff. Their patio has tons of flowers and makes for a fun atmosphere. I've worked in the restaurant business and there are a few things they're missing out to be successful. Went for happy hour and they made a drink with the wrong alcohol. Then did not have one of the happy hour menu items. They fixed the issues, but just didn't have the greatest experience. Went the next morning for brunch. They didn't have half the brunch items. Told us they had $5 bloody Mary's so we ordered one. Didn't have the oysters listed on the menu so.....ok went with a different one. Paid the bill and after looking at the receipt. We were charged $12 for the bloody Mary's. We asked and the server and she said we don't run that promotion any longer and we will make sure we don't tell any one else that. As we were leaving we talked to one of the people that worked there and mentioned the $5 drinks and she said they do have the $5 bloody Mary's and not sure why we were told that. The service is very slow so did not want to sit around and wait for them to try and figure this out. It's sad because I always hate to see a restaurant fail. I don't know when their lease renewal is up, but doubtful this place is gonna survive. I would not recommend. read more

I wanted to give a better rating, but it was hard with the issues we experienced. When we got in there the decor was so pretty to look at. It was very clean and open. We were very quickly sat at our table. We were offered water. I will say to begin with they do have a very big menu. They have a menu in the middle of the table which has drinks, appetizers and desserts. You also get a two page menu and it also comes with an additional insert which I'm assuming would be all their specials. Our waiter was very nice and polite. We started off with the Kilpatrick oysters and those were great. The barbecue sauce was not spicy in our opinion. One of the oysters were missing from the bacon but otherwise they were great. When it comes to the seafood, it was very well seasoned but the steak on the other hand is where the issues were for us. The steaks were not cooked properly and the butter that they put on top of the steak was Ice cold so it made the steak cold. The filet looks good on the outside, but on the inside, it was completely rare, still blue. Both of the meats lacked seasoning. The macaroni and cheese needed salt. The flavor of the sauce was your typical cheese sauce, but it needed more flavor. I advised the waiter that the steak was severely undercooked and she apologized and I let her know it was nowhere near her fault. And she offered to either re-cook it or, get me a new one, but I let her know that I was just kind of too disgusted to even eat anything and she said she was so sorry. She let her manager know he came over, who then asked the same questions and I just told him to go ahead and refire it and I can take it home. Well when I get it back in the box, they completely charred it so I was completely over the whole experience. I would say I would love to come back to this location because of all the hype that I've seen on social media saying to come here I am just not sure. I would say it's a great place for seafood as it does fresh andseasoned but for meat, I'm not too sure. I know my bad experience may be a one off, but having undercooked food is kind of a big thing safety wise. read more
