The thermostat in our heater was cutting in and out for no obvious reason. We replaced the thermostat itself but the problem persisted. We called Ali at ARA and he was able to come out the next day. It turned out to be an incorrectly installed water catch basin such that one or two teaspoons of condensation would trigger the safety shutoff. It was fixed the same day. We have been putting off replacing our 35 year old furnace and air conditioning until a friend recommended ARA Heating and Air Conditioning because he was happy with the work they had done for him. We called ARA because we thought our thermostat was broken, maybe shorting out. Our heating came on only intermittently. Ali answered the phone when we called, set an appointment for the next morning, and showed up on time. Turns out, the emergency switch that shuts the system off in event of water had been installed in the wrong place and was affected by the water in the catch pan meant to catch condensation. Ali moved the switch to the appropriate place and we have had no trouble since. Since that first visit, we have had Ali install air purifiers. I did not have a good experience with this company. My AC died just prior to the heatwave back in early July 2018 and the temperatures inside my place reached 90-100 degrees, even at night. We had trouble sleeping at night as a result. In a mad dash to find a technician, I messaged multiple vendors on Yelp hoping to find someone who could come out and diagnose and fix my central air. After receiving multiple messages from companies saying they were too inundated with requests to come out, ARA Heating and Air Conditioning responded with the soonest availability, so I booked them. Ali came out a few days later and checked my AC. He seemed nice enough, but made an offhand remark that he would have never come out here if he knew I lived in Trabuco Canyon. I found this to be a bit odd because his Yelp page stated that he serviced this area. At any rate, he was able to identify that all the freon had leaked out of my system. Unfortunately, he was not equipped to perform a leak test and advised us that he could come back a week later to perform said test. We let him know that a week was a long time to wait due to how hot our unit had been the past few days. He said that the wait was necessary so that he could enter the attic later in the week, once it was cooler outside. He pressurized the system and suggested that, since the pressure was holding (according to his instruments), he could pump it full of freon in hopes that it would last us through the summer--then we could simply perform a full leak test in the winter when it was cooler. He also suggested introducing a sealing agent into the ventilation to plug up any minor holes that may exist in the system. When we asked him if this solution would work, he said "I don't know." Desperate for some relief, we agreed to this plan and accepted the risks. Big mistake. Three days later (and $425.00 sunk) all the freon in our system had already leaked out. To Ali's credit, he immediately sent out a pair of technicians to identify the leak. Unfortunately, the pair of technicians showed up 8 hours later than the time we had originally scheduled on the phone. This was inconvenient for me because I had taken the day off work to coordinate this. Regardless, the team he sent seemed professional. They immediately split up and attempted to identify leaks with the outside compressor and evaporator in the attic. They moved fast. Unfortunately, they were unable to find the leak. They recommended coming back later and performing a full pressure test to isolate the leak. This consisted of cutting the pipes outside and in the attic, welding them off, attaching valves, and pressurizing the system in multiple places to see if the leak was coming from the evaporator, compressor, or line set. I was quoted $450 for this test (Ali said it was a discounted rate since I had already spent money on the Freon and sealing agent which hadn't worked). I was also told that if the leak was in the line set, I would have to run a new set of lines up the outside of the building since they wouldn't be able to access the pipes in the wall. This sounded EXTREMELY expensive, so I called a different company to get a second opinion, despite the fact that I had already sunk $425 into ARA. Here's where it gets crazy...The technician from this other company was able to find the leak in 5 minutes...and it was a pretty significant leak. In fact, he knew exactly where the leak would be based on the model of the compressor and the prominent oil stains that were present on metal screen. His instruments were able to pick up the leak immediately. It was the outside compressor all along and the model had a known history of leaks (I looked it up on Google after he told me). I decided to replace the compressor. My AC has been good to go ever since. When you call a professional to diagnose and fix something as major as a central air conditioning system, there is an expectation for a certain level of expertise. I know that I accepted a risk by agreeing to pump freon into a system with known leaks, but I feel like this could have all been avoided if the technician from ARA had the tools necessary to identify the leak in the first place. I also believe that "I don't know" is an unacceptable answer when you are a professional in this industry. I feel like if I would have called the second company to begin with, I would be $425 richer and I wouldn't have wasted three weeks of my life waiting for my AC to be repaired during one of the biggest heat waves of the summer. read more
