It's been a while since we visited here, but my goodness it feels like eating at my grandma's (in the very best way). It's a little family-run shop that has so many gorgeous basil, begonia, and pothos everywhere. The whipped feta eggs are heavenly and, even though I don't normally love sausage, the kofte are so good and rich. The homemade desserts are gorgeous and we couldn't resist getting some tiramisu and torta pie. It's so chill and a great place to get a very late brunch (we went in at 1:30). Arber Cafe is an Albanian coffee shop and cafe in South St. Louis. We went there on a Sunday instead of going to a more well known brunch spot that was overcrowded a block away. We were pleasantly surprised with the excellent service, authentic food, and delicious coffee. We tried Byrek and the Arber breakfast which featured scrambled eggs with feta, Albanian meatballs, fried potatoes, bread, and homemade jam. Everything was absolutely delicious and plentiful. I'm so happy I decided to swing in today because my goodnessssssss this might be my new spot!! I've never had Albanian food, and I have to say my first experience was TOP NOTCH. The woman working the counter www so sweet and kind and really helped me with the menu. I ended up getting the Ali Pash and the Petulla as dessert. The cafe is family owned and very cute! Gives you a homey yet Mediterranean vibe. It's extremely clean and organized. The food is extremely fresh and homemade. It was also very affordable and a generous amount of food. The family is so welcoming and kind as well as very humble. Looking at the menu I was nervous if I would have enjoyed anything on it. However the quiche was so light and airy. The Mediterranean omelet was so fresh and light and the potatoes were extremely soft and delicious! It is a family owned and operated business and you can tell how much they care about the quality of their food. They are very flexible with customizations and levels of seasoning on their food. Just moved to south city so in checking out my new neighborhood spots I came to Arber for some coffee and treats. You guys- I am in love! Growing up where I did (in NY) there were cafes like this all over. Albanian, Greek, middle eastern, Italian- always small, with the matriarch running the show while the men sit huddled around a table or sometimes outside smoking. Arber is one of those very rare gems where you feel like you're stepping into a families kitchen to share a meal. Setting itself apart, Arber is impossibly clean and incredibly inviting. If my emotional gushing isn't enough to convince you, I am convinced they have the best latte in STL. Granted I haven't tried every single coffee shop- this is as good as it gets and I am kind of a snob in the coffee department. It is smooth, and perfectly steamed so that the milk imparts that slightly nutty flavor and you can actually taste it since the espresso is smooth and not overly acidic. No need to get vanilla or sugar added, this is perfection in a cup! The Turkish coffee was a little on the light side for me- I'm used to essentially chewing mine, but what I'm used to could also be very wrong. It could also be a result of them trying to appease filling a to go cup since I ordered it to go, which no one should ever do to Turkish coffee. The treats were so lovely! The Albanian kisses remind me of mini Alfejores (Argentinian cookies) and the baklava while wetter than I expected (take extra napkins!) was also richer than I expected. I can put my finger on what was different but it was a slightly deeper flavor. They have a small food menu which I now regret not ordering from, but won't be waiting too long to go back for. Lastly- I will say that the prices for the product are beyond reasonable. I got a latte, Turkish coffee, a cup of specialty cookies and 2 pieces of baklava for what you'd spend on a latte at a far lesser coffee spot. And you get kind service from someone who will even run out from behind the counter to help you with the door. This is a gem of a find and I cannot recommend stopping in enough. read more

I took my three teenage daughters and mother there for lunch today. We were introduced to the owners and felt immediately comfortable. We sat near big windows near the front which let in lots of natural light. Fresh herbs were growing in planters inside the windows. Nice! As you may imagine, telling three teenagers that you're passing by 5 McDonalds to go for Mediterranean fare was not immediately popular but they LOVED it and said "we're definitely coming back" several times. The menu was well done with a number of really great sounding items - but not too overwhelming. Prices were very reasonable. There were a few specials, one of which we ordered. The gryos were incredible - like we may soon return on a Amber-gyros-vigil.... We also enjoyed a Mediterranean omelet, a chicken parmigiana sandwich and byrek (phyllo with meet, cheese, spinach) For desert we had a torta (cake with toasted almonds and chocolate), baklava and petula (fried dough with honey and pistachios). Portions were all well sized. It was too good to have any leftovers and everyone had just the right amount to eat. We'd enthusiastically recommend Arber Cafe.
