This is one of the better sushi restaurants in the area. However, compared to sushi in NY and San Francisco, it is not as good. Typically, the salmon, and tuna nigiri is pretty fresh. I have had a couple of bad experiences with the unagi where the skin was nasty. I also enjoy the spicy tuna roll and dynamite roll (shrimp tempura roll). The seaweed salad is also good. My friend ordered pork katsu and it was gray, colorless and tasteless. The cream cheese balls are very tasty! Typically, the service is pretty good and you get served right away. Overall-pretty good food but a bit pricey. read more

Arigato is my go to sushi place. Whether I'm with just one friend or a group (they have a nice large private room in the back for larger parties) the service is always great, quick but attentive, and the servers are friendly. The sushi is delicious here - I love trying out their special rolls as well as the old standbys. Also after trying so many sushi places in the area at this price level, I love that Arigato gets both the rice to filling ratio for their sushi right, as well as the rice flavor and consistency. The rice itself isn't gummy or overly sweet like some lesser sushi places I've been to in the area, that taste little better than the supermarket stuff. Additionally the fish portions on their nigiri and sashimi don't feel stingy like some other restaurants where you're lucky to get a fingernails worth of fish. I also love the variety of their menu. When I'm not feeling like straight sushi or sashimi I usually go for one of their bento boxes which have a wide range of options so you can't go wrong. You can choose boxes that include some combination of salmon terriyaki, bulgogi, tempura or different sushi/sashimi (as well as an awesome vegetarian box option). Most boxes combine about 2-3 main items (tempura, teriyaki, a roll, some sashimi etc) with the sides of soup, salad, rice, carrot and daikon pickles, and sometime shumai, so it feels like you're really getting your money's worth. (Honestly a lot of the time I split a box with my sister and come out stuffed). All in all this is my favorite sushi place in the area due to it's well rounded menu and great service. This is my favorite place to get sushi hands down. We always get something different when we go and everything is simply amazing. We go at least once every two weeks. The staff is friendly and the sushi is prepared fairly quickly. You are always greeted when you come in and you get a friendly thank you and goodbye when you leave. They serve you edamame and cheese wonton-like bites while you browse the menu. It's definitely worth trying once but it's worthy of becoming your favorite sushi place in the area. read more

Zero stars for this place. The owner takes advantage of senior citizens and overcharges them by sweet talking them. She pushes the expensive dishes and even when declined, she brings them out anyways and charges for it in the bill. The restaurant serves raw chicken and refuses to cook it more when requested. This place has really gone down hill. Been frequenting this establishment for at least 10 yrs but we have done take out ( due to Covid-19) the last couple of times. I usually spend $130 or more but doesn't seem to matter. Tonight, over an hour for sushi, sashimi & California roll for 2 and part of the order was still wrong. (Asked for no wasabi but got plenty). I would classify this sushi establishment as above average. I walked in the door and was greeted swiftly by very polite waitstaff. Coming from the west coast, I had low expectations of a sushi place in Virginia, but on my way in the door I asked a fellow patron if this place was any good, his reply: "You lucked out my friend. We've lived here for 6 years and this is the - only - place we get sushi at. We're very particular". His recommendation was solid. I ordered the Mexican Roll, White Tuna Roll, Rainbow Roll and Octopus Nigiri. $37 with tip was the damage and I thought the portions, quality and presentation were just fine. read more

Loved everything about this sushi restaurant! From the moment we walked in, Yoshi the owner aka Nevergetold, greeted us with a warm smile. The food was absolutely delicious. This is very comparable to Yoko in Oakton which is a few miles away, but the service isn't comparable. Arigato service is unmatched to any other sushi restaurants I've been to. I love sushi, and I don't think I have even given a place only two stars - but the chef's choice 15 piece sashimi plate had a not-so-fresh taste to it, and the vegetable tempura was less-than-average, the 6 piece serving included one thin piece that was seaweed, and one piece that was banana (yech!) She brought some of the sushi out on same plates (for different customers), so we had to eat off one plate. No big deal, just different she didn't split it. But rolls were great. This place is super good. This is the third time I've been here, and I will continue to go here. The service is good, and the food is even better. I went with my mother, and we started with the Arigato balls, and Shumai. The arigato balls were super good, but interesting. They were literally just fried balls with cream cheese in them. Yeah. The shumai was much better though. They were very hot, but after they cooled down they were wolfed down quickly. Very succulent and flavorful. For the entree, we ordered the 77 piece maki platter. Now, you might be wondering how two people at 77 pieces of sushi; it's because of me. I didn't have breakfast, and I was starving. All of the sushi on it was incredibly. My favorite is probably the fried soft shelled crab, or at least that's what I think it is. I didn't really like the spicy tuna, not because it was spicy (it wasn't that spicy), but I just didn't really like the flavor. Besides that though, I ate everything. We have been regulars for many years. We have tried many other restaurants for sushi, but this place has the freshest salmon, tuna, and yellow tail. Our go to order: Salmon Combo, Tuna Combo, Sushi Moriawase B with Cali Rolls, and Arigato Balls. Best miso soup compared to others. Was in Fairfax for a business evening and was in the mood for sushi. This place was fantastic. Cool decor and friendly staff, I enjoyed everything. I liked the dry erase sheet of a la carte items to choose from and had 2pcs of sashimi crab stik and a veggie delight sushi roll (cucumber, avocado, and fried sweet potato) with a house salad. All was served promptly and was mouth-watering. Now, it's no Sushi and Spice (Newport News, VA), but it's the best place I've found within a few miles of my house. I ordered the Philly Roll (I always have to order one), the Spicy White Tuna Roll, and the Eel Roll. The Philly was awesome (let's be honest, they're pretty impossible to screw up), as was the Eel Roll. The Eel one had eel, avocado, orange roe and eel sauce... simple and really great. As for the tuna roll - I expected cucumber or avocado or SOMETHING to accompany the fish - but it was just a hunk of fish rolled in Sriracha (sp?) sauce and rolled into a maki roll. It wasn't bad... just a bit boring - could have been great! The appeared to be really fresh, and everything overall was delicious. Service was decent, but we had 3-4 different waitresses even though we were only there for about an hour. They serve you these little wontons (free, one per person) of cream cheese and scallions that were great... you also get a teeny (like 5 beans) tray of edamame. Overall, I'd definitely go again because the sushi was pretty great and the prices were decent ($35 for my 3 rolls and my friends 2 rolls) and I took home leftovers :) read more

I came here for the sushi and had a dragon roll and a california roll which both are americanized. I have an upset stomach today had to keep it cooked. So I have to say something to those people complaining about the wonton soup, the crab rangoon and your philly roll. First of all this is a japanese restuarant. Why would you go to a japanese restaurant to order chinese food? Wonton soup and crab rangoon is chinese. Secondly, crab rangoon is not a real chinese food, crab rangoon was invented in the united states just like general tso (deep fried chicken with sauce) chicken and sweet and sour chicken (Mcnugget with a sweet and sour sauce) was invented in the united states. It is not chinese food. Thirdly, philly rolls was invented in the United States just like Dragon Roll and California Roll. In Japan, there are no philly roll and california rolls, those are specially made. If you want to try real japanese food and rate it as real japanese food with the raw tuna, the raw salmon, the shrimp, and have sashimi and chirashi, then we will talk about whether your ratings are really valid. The philly roll by the way is not real sushi, it is a maki roll. Just like what I ordered are Maki rolls. It is not nigiri sushi or chirashi sushi. The food here was normal as other japanese restaurants. The food took 20 minutes to come out, but that's normal! You're asking for food to be prepared from scratch. The food was good. After moving from San Diego I've been hard-pressed to find a sushi restaurant that holds up to the standards of some of my favorite places there. Virginia is not known for the great sushi bars and the few places that I've been to so far have been less than stellar. Arigato Sushi is a big step in the right direction. The owners are (I believe) Korean and the restaurant is decorated in [mostly] Japanese decor with some Korean handmade lamps for soft lighting. It's really a very attractive restaurant and a very comfortable atmosphere. We sat at the bar since it was fairly empty and we wanted to be close to the 2 chefs. The chefs weren't as attentive or engaging as I'm used to, but they were at the very least Asian and to me that meant that there was a better chance of the nigiri being cut right and the rolls being put together correctly. It also implied that there would be some knowledge of the fish that we would be eating and the possibility that they might make some recommendations. Well, I was wrong about that last part, but our chef DID know how to pack rice correctly, give correct portions of rice:fish, and make a pleasant presentation. The yelllowtail nigiri that I ordered was nice and buttery. The salmon had a nice texture as well. The rolls that we ordered were the butterly roll and the ninja roll, but were attractive and well-made, and tasted very nice. Not once was there a fishy smell or taste from the food or in the restaurant in general. The quality overall was very good it surprised me after being disappointed by other places that I'd been to. The only issues that I had were with the wait staff/manager. When we were seated and our drink order taken my cousin's chopsticks were taken away with the menu. Our plates were taken away before we were finished with our ginger, and when our plates/drinks were delivered my cousin found herself having to lean back while the waitress/manager reached in front of her to get to me. It wasn't poor service by any means, but a little more training couldn't hurt. Overall it was a nice experience and I will definitely be going back. Maybe we'll buy the chef some sake next time to get him to be a little more engaging. EDIT: most of the poor reviews that I've been reading were posted on a Wednesday which means that the critic probably ate there Tuesday night. If there's one thing that I've learned about sushi restaurants is that you usually don't go there on Tuesdays and expect it to be fresh. We used to drive all the way to Towson, MD (north of Baltimore) to visit Sushi Hana because we absolutely loved their sushi. Not any longer! Arigato has just as much variety in our own backyard. My fiancee used to live in Japan and he made the comment that he didn't have sushi so yummy overseas. Be sure to try the signature "Arigato Balls" and "The Lion King Roll" and you won't be disappointed. Not overly crowded and ample parking. Open later than most restaurants in the area and the takeout is just as fresh as eating in. read more

This restaurant has questionable business practices. They lie on their time estimates for when food will be ready for takeout. They make people wait and ridiculous amount of time to get the food and then they blame the delivery drive for anything that goes wrong. I will never order from this place again. read more

I went here the other day around 5:30pm and we were the only customers in the store. The service was average. The place was fairly clean. The menu consists of some Korean dishes and some Japanese dishes. We ordered the chirashi and a couple of a la carte nigiri and a crazy roll. The chirashi portion was very small with too much pickles, mushrooms, and imitation crab meat and not enough sashimi slices. The a la carte sushi...the hamachi (yellow tail) was sour. I have never tasted sour fish but this one definitely tasted weird and I could not eat it. Much improvement necessary! read more

The service was good and the sushi was good. The cream cheese balls were the money! Some of the sushi isn't described very well though. I ordered two rolls based on the description and they came out deep fried. NO WHERE in the description did they mention anything fried.
