2.5 stars This is a decent sushi restaurant. Went there with a friend for dinner last friday. I ordered a salad, california roll, futo maki roll, and a eel and avacado roll. My friend ordered the sashimi and sushi platter. The sushi was ok. Nothing really exciting. I think the rolls were cut too large and not well rolled because everything was falling apart. My friends sashimi platter looked good very fresh. Heres where they lacked stars... The service was bad... After we ordered and the food came out not once did anyone ask us how we were doing or if we needed refills. They never asked us if we wanted dessert she just brought out our check and left it on the table. Finally, we were going to split the bill. I was paying with credit my friend with cash. The lady didnt say a word took my credit card left with the bill and charged the entire dinner on my card. it all happen so fast i cudnt even stop to correct her. My friends cash was right next to my card and she didnt even ask or anything. Service sucks! Which is unfortunate because they actually have decent sushi :-/ read more

This restaurant has questionable business practices. They lie on their time estimates for when food will be ready for takeout. They make people wait and ridiculous amount of time to get the food and then they blame the delivery drive for anything that goes wrong. I will never order from this place again. read more

3 years later, just had an even worse experience. I am not trying to create an issue but just had the most absolute worst experience ever. Ordered a Shrimp tempura hand roll and a Spicy tuna hand roll to go. Came home (7 minute drive) and first had the shrimp tempura hand roll which was decent. Then take a bite of the spicy tuna roll and what in the world............ Does this place re-use old fish? You just KNOW when something is going bad. I swear, this spicy tuna was old, days old, SO fishy. You know when you eat something bad or it isn't good but you paid for it so you think "whatever" and eat it anyway? Well this is a situation where the food goes straight in the trash. I am not sure if this place has a problem with people complaining but we called them to let them know that the Spicy tuna was going bad. The waitress did not know how to handle the situation...she kept saying "bring back the spicy tuna hand roll and we will give you a new one". Um.....what? Bring back the one that is in the trash so you can make me a new one so I can repeat what I just did again? She said we had to bring it back to get a refund as well. No thanks. It's simple, the fish is BAD, customer calls to let them know. All they need to do is try it and they too will say WHOA and heave it where it belongs - garbage. the food was not bad but not good either. our waitress gave us crab rangoon and edamame to start. the crab rangoon didn't have any noticeable crab meat in it, just plain cream cheese inside. for my meal, i ordered the uni, the spicy salmon roll and the spicy yellow tail roll. the uni was good and for $9.50 it is definitely a dollar or two cheaper than other places that i've been to. the spicy salmon and yellow tail rolls though were very disappointing. they weren't flavorful and appeared poorly crafted. there weren't much fish in the rolls and it seemed like the chef just squirted some hot sauce in the rolls and called that "spicy". the sushi didn't taste fresh in my opinion. but sushi is sushi and i'll still eat it no matter what. my brother ordered the cold tenzaru soba and the chirashi bowl. they both came with a little miso soup and a salad. i thought the soba was kinda plain and didn't quite agree with my taste buds. the chirashi bowl though was the highlight of our meal. it had rice at the bottom and topped with a medley of vegetables and slices of raw fish. it was quite delightful and we both enjoyed it immensely. our waitress was pretty speedy in her service but then again we were the only table in the restaurant for quite awhile so it shouldn't be asking too much to expect that kind of service. 3.5 stars!! But I rounded up. I think I rounded up because the Chirashi Bowl was well priced and they have good hours. They close at 10 and they truly close at 10. They don't close early if they don't have customers. And they didn't try to rush me out even though I came in late. I think yelp nailed this place perfectly on the head. Its rating is a 3.5. I agree 100%. So my friend and I came in late, around 9:10 at night and they were still open! Yay! So we go in and it's a small authentic Japanese restaurant. We were sat and I looked at the menu for a bit. They had a lot of variety! So that was nice. They also gave out a few pieces of Edamame and two crab ragoons for us so that was nice. I also like how the meals came with soup and salad. I ended up getting the white Tuna platter. I will say though, I thought it was a little bit overpriced. Just a little. I would have preferred it to be 20$, but it was like 23$, or something around that. I also didn't like the taste of the white Tuna as much. Granted, I am coming at the end of the day, but still, the fish seemed like it wasn't kept at the right temperature throughout the day, so then by the time it got to me, the taste was off. :/ So that was a negative. I also wasn't too fond of the sushi rice. It wasn't fresh. Yes, I know it's the end of the day so it's not going to be as good as if you come early, but I have been to other restaurants in the area and I go in late and they are still able to have good sushi rice late at night. I also wasn't too fond of the nigiri white Tuna. Way too big of a piece and it just kind of fell apart. The maki rolls were really good though!! The maki rolls and the temaki was the best part!! I would go back just to order those! My friend ordered a Chirashi Bowl and it was well priced! I think it was 18$. It was pretty good. Different fish and nice variety. But the same complaints though, it wasn't super fresh. I think my big comment or suggestion to this restaurant would be, somehow find a better way to store the sushi rice and fish. Other restaurants in the area seem to execute this well, so I feel like this one should be able to as well. The service was just fine and normal. Only complaint would be, it took a long time to get our food. I was a little surprised by that.... I know it takes a while to cut and such, but we were the only ones there.... They did have a few to go orders but there were two sushi chefs. So I'm not sure why it took so long. Sushi is also better eaten fresh so I would have preferred that they brought out my platter when it was ready and not wait for the Chirashi bowl, but I understand where they are coming from by making my tuna platter wait for the Chirashi Bowl. I think if I come back, I'll just tell them to bring out the platter as soon as it's ready. All in all, the prices seemed reasonable on the other items on the menu. Meh. Pretty disappointed with this place overall. Food: I ordered the oyako don on a cold night and while the serving size was huge, the dish was overly sweet, and they scrambled the eggs and chicken and onion together somewhat haphazardly, so it looked more like scrambled eggs than a donburi. Not very visually appealing, but if the taste had made up for it, it would've been fine by me! My dish also came with a small salad and miso soup, which was nice, but both were average. Arigato gives your table free crab rangoon appetizers, which is a nice touch. My friends all ordered sushi and two of them weren't super pleased with the quality of the fish. Don't come here expecting authentic Japanese food. Service: Our waitress was fine to me, but pretty rude to one of my friends. She always seemed to be in a rush, wasn't particularly friendly and gave my friend a bit of a hard time when she asked for some hot sauce. They do not have a Yelp loves us sticker, though they do have some label guaranteeing safe food preparation or something like that (good to know), and here's why: The food isn't fresh. While they're generous with freebies- edamame, standard salad that accompanies most sushi meals, and fried dumpling stuffed with cream cheese-they leave much to be desired in terms of the quality of the food. It's rather puzzling because they seem to get decent traffic for a weeknight. You'd think that demand would create the need for food to constantly be restocked, but no. The edamame was sad and unsalted. The salad greens also seemed lifeless and tasted very bland despite the quintessential ginger salad dressing. The fried dumpling was blah. These lackluster snacks should have been an indicator of how the main course and sushi would turn out, but I decided to take a chance. Sure enough, both items were flops. The sansei udon was mediocre; the broth seemed like it could have come out of some packet. I would probably have been better off at Myung-Ga Gim Bap. The boiled egg on top was overcooked. My only solace was the chewy udon noodles. I also ordered the uni. Portions were generous, but the fish gonads didn't seem very fresh either. Halfway through the soup, I found a hair. Maybe it was my own. And maybe it wasn't, but I rested my chopsticks then. Like some others have commented, the service needs improvement. They only have two servers, presumably the owner and another woman. I was only greeted by the sushi chefs when I arrived; the other two paid no attention. And one of them told me to seat myself. Instead of at least coming to bring me some water, she went to a table that had already been helped to take their order. They could've waited just another minute because it seems rude to leave your newest customer just hanging like that. An unsatisfactory dining experience, which will not be repeated. read more

I really love the sushi here, it's delicious! The reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I can no longer eat here with my husband. He's allergic to fish and not big on Japanese food in general, but he loves their salads. We asked if it was possible if he could bring in a sandwich from Jersey Mike's (next door), while he ordered a salad and a drink (and I ordered sushi). They said "yes", so we started doing this on a regular basis. Then, randomly, they told us he wasn't allowed to bring in outside food (I believe the owner was there that night). Now - I suppose I'd understand if they had told us this from the beginning, but at this point they recognized us and knew our routine - the change in policy was a bit upsetting. Ah well, from now on for sushi I need to do take-out, and my husband isn't willing to give them another shot! read more

Actually, this is a 3 1/2 star review. I am not a huge sushi affectianado, but do like to explore new things. We have eaten here twice and It was good both times. Ambiance: Casual, clean, typical shopping center narrow and deep space, light and airy. Service: Good, attentive and professional Food: Yes, the cheese stuffed puffs are great. We had mostly rolls the last time, with the spicy tuna and the tempura shrimp especially nice. We did some special sampler hand roll shaped like 'cones' of sushi/rice that were in a stand and a bit over the top in presentation. My partner said she felt like when you get a silly tropical drink delivered to the table and you wonder if people are staring at you and thinking you are as immature as the drink. But it was tasty, although a bit hard to eat neatly. Drinks: I am not a sake drinker, so we only had beer. Anyway, they are friendly and consistent. If you want a casual and reasonably priced meal, I recommend Arigato. read more

Overall, very good. Besides the necessary fresh fish and wide variety on the menu, Arigato goes above and beyond with a friendly waitstaff and free snacks while you wait (some edamame and two arigato balls--basically fried wontons with cream cheese and scallions). I went here with one other person, and we ordered an appetizer portion of the arigato balls and four rolls -- rainbow, godzilla, yoyo, and mexican. This was plenty of food for the two of us, and we enjoyed the variety. The mexican rolls were listed as spicy but just had a medium kick to them... fine with me, since I'm a wuss when it comes to spicy foods. Although I wouldn't put Arigato on the top of my list for DC sushi, we will definitely be back when in Fairfax. read more

My expectations for this place were not very high but I came in with an open mind because a friend recommended it. Our dining experience started out relatively well, the waitress served us complimentary cheese rangoon and edamame, and promptly brought us our drinks. However, the remainder of our experience here was very sub-par. I ordered a couple rolls of sushi and found them both to be below average. The fish did not taste or look very fresh, which is all that really needs to be said about sushi. The seaweed salad, on the other hand, was tasty. The quality of service we received went downhill really fast. The waitress seemed to be in a rush and aggressively placed our dishes on the table. I simply asked her for a side of spicy sauce and she became extremely agitated by the request. Regardless, she brought it over pretty quickly. At the end of our meal, the waitress returned and made a very snide comment about how much of the sauce had remained. The comment was unnecessarily rude and made a few of us at the table feel awkward. I've never been treated like this in a restaurant before so needless to say, I was turned off by her demeanor. It used to be that I could come here and get a very good sushi and sashimi meal here, at a decent price, with great service. When I lived 10 minutes away, I used to come here several times a month until I moved to Loudoun County. I haven't been here for about 2 years but it was a great place that I could count on. Sitting down, you would immediately get edamame and those fried cream cheese dumplings, complimentary. However; now it seems that now you only get edamame; a bit disappointing but not a deal-breaker. What my wife and I noticed was that the menu seemed a bit larger, which is a good thing, but that the prices also got "larger." I thought that with the bad economy, prices should stay relatively the same, but I was wrong. I ordered a sushi/sashimi combo to share and we also got fried oysters. The soup and salad were still very good; miso soup was hot (temperature) and salty; the salad was cold, crisp, and the dressing was as good as I remembered. When the sushi/sashimi combo arrived, the presentation was not as polished as it was when I came here during 2002-2008. The california rolls didn't have tobiko (flying fish roe) surrounding all sides; rather, one part seemed a bit empty, and the nori was showing through the rice. It was a bit sloppy, IMHO. Some of the nigiri sushi had a bit too much wasabi. The sashimi was pretty good though; there was tuna, salmon, and another white fish. They all went down like butter, as expected. We then ordered an ice cream for dessert; at $3.00, it was a decent portion. While the food was not as good as it used to be, it was still decent. Service, while it wasn't poor, it wasn't good either -- there were only 2 waitresses, so it took a while to get your drink refilled. My wife and I came to the same conclusion: 1) The prices are a bit too high, for this quality of food, which is about average. 2) We probably won't be coming back. 3) We might as well make the trek to Mclean or DC for a) higher quality sushi, and b) better prices. I have been boycotting the place for more than a yr now even though I have to admit I do miss their seafood udon noodle from time to time. Well it is pretty much the only thing though. I usually have a lot of online conference to attend around lunch hours and I usually take it to go with 2 dollars of tip thank them for wrapping up everything. The very last time I ordered I specifically asked for the Korean pickle in case u are not aware or can't tell it is a Korean sushi not Japanese ones. I guess my English and Korean together was not enough to express wut I wanted was their pickle . So I guess it exhausted the whole restaurant to search wut I asked for. The moment I got in and explained they finally got it, I heard one waitress said out loud "shiba" in Korean. I am not a fan in Korean language but I know enough to know that is a f word. Sorry it does sound the same as the cute dog in that tear flooding movie with Richard Gere. Well Asian language could be ironic sometimes. So the other kinder looking not cursing waitress informed me formally it is the last time they would provide me with pickles for take out. The pickles are for dinning only. I protested and told them I usually add tip to compensate. Well it didn't help. Let us face is even if I dine in a 13 dollars noodle come up with 2 dollars (15% standard tip). I can't get their business sense or justification so I guess I could totally respect it by not patronizing it again. At least till this place goes belly up and some sensible new owner come around. Just some friendly advice guys, if u hear they say "shiba" out loud. They are not calling an imaginary loyal fluffy cute "hatchi" waiting outside a train station. We had several types of rolled sushi along with hamaruki and green tea and have no complaints other than, as you'd expect, the tab hits your wallet a little hard. Party of 5 ate for $68 before tip. This is for the online ordering ONLY I ordered online to go and our order was very screwed up. They gave us 2 of one thing and completely forgot the other. We called and they told us to come back so that they could correct it. The only reason why we did is because it takes exactly 1 minute to get there from my place. Now this part is half our fault, because we did not check to make sure everything was corrected before leaving the parking lot when we got our new order...but they screwed up AGAIN. I swear it was on purpose. But they were not very busy and when the online order is sitting in front of your face and you manage to screw that up TWICE, how can you expect people to come back? Sorry, Arigato, but you're not the only place around that does great sushi so we found a better place. One that can actually spell the word LIME on the drink menu (IT IS NOT SPELLED "LIM"). My favorite sushi place. I don't mind going a little far for this place, even though there are other sushi places that are closer. I hear complaints all the time about there is a better place for sushi, but people never say what the place is. The bento boxes are great, their sushi is pretty great, price is fair, and the service is great. I really like their sushi rolls also and their tempura is always nice and crispy. Dined tonight with my 2 1/2 year old daughter and one of my girlfriends. My daughter was not in a very good mood and they were very friendly and patient which I definitely appreciate. Noticed there were several other kids in the restaurant as well and they even have kids plates/utensils. Courtesy of IKEA because we have the same ones at our house. Anyway as a mother it's always nice to dine in a kid friendly environment and first sushi restaurant we've visited with a changing table. Guessing they're a newer Restaurant and it's FFX county so it could be code or they're just extremely accommodating. To the important part! We ordered the sushi/sashimi combo for $26 and the Bulgogi. Sushi was very fresh and the rolls were delicious. Def a competitior in the Bulgogi department as well. It's better than Honey Pig's. The complimentary Arigato balls are a nice touch. Arigato is one of my favorite little spots for lunch! They have a great selection of sushi, Korean, and Japanese dishes. Everyone gets a complimentary Arigato Ball to start their meal- this is a delicious fried dough with cream cheese and scallions inside. So good! It's hard to resist getting a whole order. My friends at work always get the sushi, but I'm partial to the chicken teriyaki or the beef bulgolgi. Both are served almost like fajitas, on a sizzling plate with veggies. Rice is served on the side. The bugolgi also comes with miso soup and salad with yummy ginger dressing. It's a great lunch, with tons of food, for a great price! When I splurge on extra Arigato Balls, I always have leftover food for later. The food is consistently fresh and tasty! The service used to be fairly slow, but it has improved significantly for our past few visits, with some new servers on board. This is a great place to try! Highly recommended. read more

This wasn't very fresh tasting, or looking sushi. In particular the tuna looked almost like raw beef. And some of the other fish on my sashimi combo was very fishy tasting. I really like the white tuna more than regular tuna. Does that make me racist? At any rate, we decided to try this place after balking at Sushi Prince's hour-long wait. We now have a new, affordable sushi place in Fairfax. The white tuna is great and so is the sea bass. Make sure to try the Mexican Roll. read more

I came here for lunch on a weekday and called my order in. They had my order ready when I arrived which was nice. I ordered a chicken curry thinking it would be like real authentic Japanese curry but I was wrong. There were hardly any vegetables and chicken in the curry. Mostly watery brown curry soup which was disappointing. I think the box curry I make at home is better than the one here. After eating here with my wife, we can confidently give Arigato four thumbs down. Besides the place just having no personality, the sushi here is terrible. I've eaten a lot of sushi from grocery stores and Arigato was worse then any grocery store sushi I've ever had. Lets review: Salmon skin roll. Well, it certainly was much crispier then other salmon skin rolls I've had in the past, but that's what happens when you burn salmon skin - it gets crispy. It also ends up tasting like a cigarette butt. The "Mexican" roll wasn't very Mexican, nor was it very good. Old spicy tuna with cucumber and "crunch" which translates to panko crumbs. Maybe they call it a Mexican roll because the old tuna will give you diarrhea? The dragon roll was somewhat tasty, but I'm a sucker for deep-fried cream cheese stuffed anything. But as far as sushi - shouldn't your rolls have some flavor besides melted cream cheese? Maybe a fish in there instead of cream cheese, rice and batter? The fotumaki roll had no flavor at all. Not sure how you can have pickled vegetables with no flavor, but they managed to figure it out. Spicy tuna roll. Now this was just plain gross. The fish was obviously old, it smelled old, and its oldness even managed to overpower the Sriracha sauce to subvert the heat with old stinky oldness. This roll left a bad taste in my mouth, literally, a fishy old ammonia flavor that stuck with me long after we left. We should have sent it back, but we've never been comfortable doing that. The Eel Handroll was actually good, but it should be since it's the one piece of sushi that they didn't have to do anything to prepare. It comes out of the package with the sauce all ready to go. We have been to this location a few times in the past and it never wowed us, but after spending $50 on bad sushi last night, we can cross Arigato off the list permanently. read more

We've eaten here many times, generally take out but we've eaten in as well. We've always had good service and the wait staff has always been polite and attentive. I've got to say, I've never had a bad piece of sushi here. It can be a bit spendy, but good sushi generally is and the prices certainly aren't outrageous. My wife generally gets cali roll, avocado roll, something that's fried with seracha sauce and other similar stuff. I go with ebi, unagi, yellowtail and generally a tuna roll. Now that we're in Gainesville the lack of any really good sushi restaurants has us missing our Arigato. read more

Felt this review was long overdue, since my parents seem to love this place. For northern VA, this is your typical sushi joint. Nothing really special, family ordered a sashimi plate, along with two plates of random nigiri selections. Not bad at all, and pricing was definitely reasonable as well. This place is nothing special though, average in nature when it came to the food. Free miso soup as well as a salad when you order an entree plate was nice. I also had an order of hot sake and I wasn't really pleased. Then again, this was just an average sushi joint. I would recommend heading out to Vienna for some good sushi if you plan on staying within northern VA, such as Sushi Yama. read more

I have only had lunch here and it is one of my go-to places for a quick lunch during work. They are extremely fast and I have never waited more than 10 or 15 minutes for my sushi, even when the restaurant is packed for lunch. My boss always gets the udon which he loves. I've had it before and it's your standard udon but in a really large portion! I've had the sashimi special and salmon lunch entree which are both really good. For being in Fairfax, the fish is extremely fresh and colorful. The bento lunch boxes are also a good deal. My typical lunch consists of a house salad, which is much bigger than other sushi restaurants, a spicy salmon roll, and a spicy scallop roll. They have just the right amount of spice and are so yummy. Their spicy scallop roll is one of the best 8've ever had. They don't chop up the scallop into tiny pieces. Instead they slice it, so each piece of the roll has a big piece of scallop! All the rolls my coworkers have had here are great. They're a good size and I feel he sushi is very simple, which in my opinion is good. They don't go too crazy on mayo, fried toppings, etc, I just went there for lunch today and already I want to go back as soon as possible! They have a really quick carry-out service also! read more

Very good! It was late in the evening when we went, and we were quite pleased in their promptness with sending out our sushi. Having said that, it was put together in a bit of a sloppy manner, which made it a bit difficult to eat. Still, it was just what we were in the mood for. This place offers some nice lunch specials! One of which I just enjoyed today... the bento box C came with rice, california roll, shrimp and vegetable tempura, and bulgogi... along with the usual salad and miso soup. I was impressed. I've been here before and sat at the sushi bar for a couple of rolls and didn't think that much of the experience, but this bento box is where it is at!! Not saying that the rolls are bad, but I just don't think I've hit the sweet spot yet as they have been pretty mediocre so far. I'm also not the first to say that the little fried dumpling filled with cream cheese and scallion are pretty awesome. The seaweed salad is pretty great as well. 11/6 - wanted to try the ramen. Glad I did, but it was nothing like the stuff that knocked my socks off in San Diego, CA. I've heard that it is difficult to get good ramen around here, so the hunt is on! Perfect cold weather food. Wouldn't put this on my list of places i plan on returning to. The experience was far from pleasant in general. The place was practically empty when we arrived, which was about 5:45 p.m. dinner time. That automatically wasn't a good sign. We were seated by a waitress who was the only staff besides the cooks. She was fairly pleasant initially, but unfortunately that changed very quickly. Was not very accommodating for special requests. A friend i was with ordered some spices and the waitress was very crude when it came to bringing it and not all of it being used. It was very distasteful in my opinion. She brought us complimentary cheese rangoon and edamame, which was a nice start to our meal. I ordered the miso soup and seaweed salad as appetizers. The miso soup was alright, i've had better. It lacked on the miso. The seaweed salad on the other hand was very tasty and was probably my favorite part of the meal. I also had the Dynamite Roll (shrimp tempura) and Spicy Unaki (eel). 99% of the time, fantastic sushi fresh and great. Been going here for years (16+) and we've had disappointments but overall so good. I suspect certain sushi chefs are better than others and schedules matter. But compared to other sushi places this one is 99.5% reliable vs competitors 70% reliable. So dependant on the daily quality of the fish it's a challenge to be 100 all the time. read more

First time trying this restaurant and I had a good experience ordering take out via Ubereats. The price is reasonable and the sashimi tasted fresh and not fishy at all. I have a weak stomach and have 80%-90% of getting upset stomach after eating sashimi but luckily I didn't this time. We ordered the udon noodles, tonkatsu, sashimi deluxe, and the chirashi bowl. I loved the sashimi deluxe, and my husband enjoyed his chirashi bowl with gochujang sauce, while my noodle loving toddler devoured her noodles and tonkatsu. Having recently just had a baby, I haven't had sashimi for about a year and was really looking forward to be able to enjoy it again as it's one of my favorite foods, and this place did not disappoint at all. Each piece of sashimi was huge, so huge that I wish they cut it thinner so that I could eat each piece in one bite instead of two or three bites. I will definitely be coming back for more! read more

I am frequently all over Northern VA for one reason or another, so when I am in Fairfax, I eat at Arigato. The fish is always fresh, the restaurant is clean and presentable, and everyone is very friendly. A few years ago I got into a scary car accident (walked away fine) and my mom offered to take me out to eat and relax and try to calm down to process it all. Since we were nearby Arigato, she took me there, and they offered me tea and some soup on the house so I could unwind, and were very accommodating while we were there.
