From someone who is Japanese, the food served here is not great. The fish used for the sushi and sashimi usually tastes a day old and the rice and seaweed is flavorless. I guess you are supposed to douse it in soy sauce. I also ordered the shrimp tempura bento box a second time I went there (only because my friend had chosen it for her birthday). The shrimp was a bit soggy and tasted like it had been frozen with a soggy breading to match. The salad was ok but the steamed shumai was also soggy. The service here is the only reason I am giving this restaurant a second star. There are plenty of other Japanese restaurants that serve better quality food. read more

MMM! Of all Japanese spots in Sunnyside, NY, this is the best. The bf and I stumbled upon this place last night and what a great find! They have a WIDEEEE selection of Japanese food from sushi to hot entrees to combinations to various appetizers and dessert. We ordered $58 worth of food, at least an item from each category named above and there was not one thing we were not satisified with last night. As per usual, Queens really delivered with excellent ethnic food. Ariyoshi is one of my favorite spots for lunch because they have fabulous lunch specials for $8.99 that are perfect if you skipped breakfast and could eat a while horse. The service here is superb, with constant refills on the water and green tea, prompt greeting and seating, and just super friendly wait staff in general. The few waiters on hand continuously circle the place and make sure everyone is satisfied while simultaneously giving you space while eating/conversing. The food is also impeccable. The lunch special which I usually order comes with dumplings, teriyaki chicken or pork, salad, and rice. It's neatly served in those cool bento box tray things. They are also one of the bedt Japanese places I have found with options for those of us with a seafood allergy. Overall, it's an easy trip from Manhattan off the 7 train, or a great stop on your way to Manhattan from Queens. Queens food at Queens prices. Can't beat that. read more

Readers, Please allow me to begin by saying that my family has been coming to Ariyoshi for 10+ years, as we live in the neighborhood. We've come to regard Ariyoshi as the neighborhood Japanese restaurant to go to when we're in the mood for decent sushi and other Japanese dishes. We have not and will not return to the restaurant ever again after what happened the other night. It was on the later part of the evening so guests were sparse. We were having a meal when all of a sudden to the corner of my eyes, I see a mouse scurrying between the tables. I jumped up and let the "manager" know immediately. The "manager" saw the mouse himself (the mouse kept scurrying by the wall trying to find its way) but he simply told that that it is not HIS responsibility and that he is not the owner. My family's jaws dropped. We were appalled. He wasn't fazed at all (maybe this rodent problem wasn't a new freak accident?) and just kept on his merry way. Meanwhile, the mouse is dashing around still on the floor of the restaurant. It's disturbing enough to see a mouse, let alone in a restaurant, let alone in a Japanese restaurant where they serve raw meat. I don't want to conjecture what's happening in the kitchen if the mouse problem was so bad it started to bleed into the restaurant floor. Look, New York is New York. Rodents exist. But in a restaurant, I expect that whoever is managing the place that day to show some concern for pests and not let it run rampant. The mouse eventually disappeared, no thanks to the restaurant staff. I will not return and I have relayed this occurrence to friends in the neighborhood about it. I cannot in good conscience let such atrocious behavior go unsaid. read more

The staff is very nice and doesnt mind explaining what certain dishes are. i highly highly recommend this place. Extremely not impressed with their takeout service. My boyfriend and I ordered some sushi. They got the order completely wrong. We walk back and explain the mistake. Instead of apologizing they interrogate us for 10 minutes about the SAME details about the order. Then they cancel the incorrect order, re-charge the credit card and throw out the "mistaken" sushi. This is abysmal customer service. They could've at least offered us the "mistaken" sushi gratis or just given us our order instead of re-charging the card for the $3 difference. ABSURD. The sushi was decent, but the service was utterly ridiculous. There are tons of great places in Queens, don't bother. read more

Guess we'll have to give this one another try after reading the other reviews. Our last experience there was just painful to stay through. There were kids running wild through the restaurant, knocking the backs of people's chairs and being loud. The food was not enough to distract us, it was so bland and horrible that we swore we'd never return. After the forgettable apps, I had the sushi and my husband had the noodles. Both things that we love. This place always seems to be packed, so obviously we are not ordering the right thing. The food isn't so good that you don't notice the bad atmosphere. read more

My go-to sushi place. They have some of the best sushi in Queens and for great prices. The staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Every time I come here I'm immediately greeted by someone and taken to my table. They have awesome lunch and dinner specials. I usually go for the chicken teriyaki dinner with some sushi sides. Meh is right. I usually hesitate about eating at places with pictures of the food on the menu and yet I succumb to Chinese take-out, pictures everywhere, and it's delicious. So, the point is, you never know. However, as an area newcomer, I was slightly disappointed with this place. It didn't seem very clean or tidy and was also dark and lonely, perhaps because it was just a Wednesday night. Second time here and would definitely have to agree that the first time was better. I came here on a Saturday evening, but it wasn't busy at ALL! (Literally 4 groups including us seated) The waiter first off directs is to sit in a corner by the window far away from everyone else and it felt like we had to TRY to get their attention for literally everything. Especially even the check, literally took them about 40 minutes to give us the check when asked....Frustration. BUT on the other hand, when we did get in contact with the waiters, they were actually super nice. In fact, we had like 3 waiters(maybe they got confused on which table to help and what not..) The food was pretty decent, had their ramen the last time and quite liked it. I would also recommend the dumplings for appetizers. This time I ordered the Salmon Teriyaki, which was pretty good! I have been eating here for 20 years and have always enjoyed the food and the service. I had a terrible experience today when a patron at the next table was watching a movie on their phone aloud. I could hardly believe it. After I complained, our server did tell them to stop and they did but then at the adjacent table a child was given a phone game to play at the table, with all the beeping. While I can't exactly blame this on the restaurant; if this is how people are going to behave at this establishment while dinning out then I will not be returning. If the public is unable to conduct themselves appropriately then rules need to be put in place to prevent the destruction of the ambiance. A friend and I decided to come here yesterday for dinner. PROS: -The atmosphere was great! Perfect setting for a date or for a dinner with your friends. It wasn't too noisy but it was lively at the same time. -The staff there were kind and patient, unlike many other places where they have staff that turn their nose down at you. They always smiled and answered your questions. -The prices were decent. Not cheap but won't put a dent in your wallet either. -I ordered the Special A, which was a bento box with a California roll, chicken teriyaki, your choice of side, and salad. What I liked about the chicken teriyaki was that the sauce wasn't overwhelmingly thick like most other places. I asked for it spicy but I guess the waiter forgot to write it down because it wasn't spicy..but I digress. I enjoyed the chicken teriyaki! -The dessert wasn't complimentary like at other Japanese places but they're worth the money. The red bean ice cream was just okay, but the green tea mochi ice cream was out of this world! -The unagi don (eel over rice) my friend ordered was well-prepared. I usually find that a lot of places pick cheap, fatty cuts of eel but at this place, the cut didn't have annoying pieces of fat in it and the seasoning was just right! -Close to the 7 train. CONS: -I was very disappointed with the sushi..I'm not sure what it was about it that made me feel it wasn't up-to-par with the other sushi places I've eaten at. -I feel like my meal should've came with rice..but it didn't. I'm not a huge rice eater, but still. VERDICT: I would come here if I was close-by or really wanted Japanese food, or (as my friend said) if I didn't want to venture all the way out to St. Marks for some decent Japanese food. First a disclaimer: I have only had one dish and one dish only from Ariyoshi. So if you're looking for an opinion on anything than their chicken teriyaki, stop reading. My mother and I have been coming to Ariyoshi since 1988, when they were still a tiny, tiny restaurant right next to the movie theater. And since then, they still have the best chicken teriyaki than anywhereeee else I've had in NYC. We returned after a long hiatus and it was just as expected: excellent. For this alone, I give them five stars for I always end up licking my plate clean and have never been served by a staff member who wasn't super friendly in 24yrs and counting.. I ordered the Vegetable Yaki Udon $8.50. It DID NOT taste like anything pan/wok/stir fried. Total disappointment. My wife put it well: it seemed that the person making it had zero concept as to how this dish is supposed to taste. It tasted like everything was steamed with some sweet watery broth on the bottom. Again, a complete disaster no-no for any fried noodle/lo mein enthusiasts out there. The second big disappointment was the Vegetable Udon soup $8.50. We both agreed that it tasted-at least to us- like the typical commercially available MSG-loaded soup base that often come in fresh udon packs. The other items ordered -Beef Negimaki $12.00 and Chirashi $14.25-were okay. Oh, and the draft Sapporo tasted really fresh. Also, one of the kids working there was kind to ask us how we liked the food and we told him, just like in passing, that the pan-fried noodles were not what we expected. The fact he interacted with us earned them a second star. All in all, I don't think we'll ever be back to this Ariyoshi. read more

Ariyoshi is probably my favorite Japanese restaurant in Queens, definitely the best in Sunnyside. This is real Japanese, and for really good prices, too. The sushi is fine - fresh enough, generous enough - but I come here for the other items. Natto spaghetti, chasoba, yudofu, etc. etc. - all things I've never seen on any other menu in this area. The extensive menu changes seasonally. This time of year, try the grilled eel dish, which comes in a cold broth filled with cucumber and wakame and is about as close to a perfect summer dish as it gets. read more

My boyfriend and I LOVE Ariyoshi. It's our go-to spot when we're craving Japanese food in Queens. We make the trip from Forest Hills, which is a 15-20 min drive, and do not mind the distance at all...if it's to eat at Ariyoshi! We've even been to Ariyoshi two days in a row. Here are the following reasons I love this place and consider it my neighborhood spot even though I don't live in the neighborhood: - Service: Always excellent service. The wait staff is attentive and friendly. - Cleanliness: The restaurant is nothing fancy but it's clean and well-kept. I hate using restrooms at restaurants but Ariyoshi does a good job at maintaining their facilities. - Food: Is the food here as great as the food in Japan? No way. Is it authentic Japanese food? Probably not. But it's still delicious and inexpensive for when you're craving some rolls and udon. They have a great deal that is on all day: One bowl of shrimp tempura udon and a bowl of chicken over rice for $12. It comes with ice-cream too! I always order the deep fried squid, gyoza, spicy tuna roll, spicy scallop roll, and spider roll. I always leave satisfied!
