Nor did I ever think to mention to a florist that a birthday arrangement shouldn't have so many branches. Feels like the branches were unloaded to make it seem worth the price instead of actual flowers. Even worse, the response was something like "we like it". But, it was my money for My Mom. I ordered an expensive flower arrangement for my wife this past Valentines Day. But a medical emergency forced my wife and I to travel a few days before Valentines to go take care of our daughter in San Diego. I called them to cancel the delivery, they said they could not do it, but would deliver the flowers at a later date. Come Valentines Day, and they deliver the flowers... Learned it from my other daughter who happened to be home that day. I wrote them and I confess I was not in my best mood, with all that was going own. The owner herself responded, apologized and promised to deliver a new arrangement when we were back from San Diego. The flowers were delivered today, and they are even more gorgeously than the original arrangement. Piedmont Avenue has two shops dedicated to flowers and pretty things. One is just flowers (and good people for sure). Arjan is that and other things as well. I'd say these two establishments are complimentary, not competitive. Here you can get a beautiful arrangement of healthy fresh-cut flowers bound together by a delicate touch and a ribbon. Here you can also get little air plants growing on wood and a variety of other delicate tastefully arranged green growing things in cool pots and artsy containers. Here you can choose from a dozen or so greeting cards the normal-sized ones and minis by my favorite card artist whose name I cannot remember right now. I've been sending love to me Mum via this artist for several years now and when I go visit her they all are together on a shelf they are so pretty. I've been here twice now. Once for air plants and another for the Sunshine. I will come again, without question, for as they are so nice and I have many things for which to show my appreciation and the fine folk here lend a loving hand to this end. read more

My best friend moved to Oakland by herself, and we wanted to get her a special bouquet for her birthday. We ordered a bouquet from Arjan flowers, and emailed us the day before to say that some of the flowers in the bouquet weren't available, and that they would have to make some substitutions. We understood and were okay with that, and approved the substitutions. My friend sent me a picture of her bouquet, which I attached here), and we we were surprised and disappointed with the result. This was a $75 bouquet (+ $15 for delivery), and it didn't look great at all. I called the next morning and let them know how I was feeling, and sent them this same picture. They said that they were sorry to hear that we were disappointed, but they stood by their design 100%, and never once acknowledged that as a customer, my feelings were valid. They kept saying that we approved the substitutions, and that they "only changed the color," as if color isn't one of the most important things in a bouquet. They also blamed my friend's iPhone for the photo, and said it looked better in person, but I talked to my friend and she said it looked about the same. How embarrassing to give a gift that's this subpar!! They put it on us for approving the substitutions, saying that they did everything in the order correctly, blaming my friend's iPhone, and saying that the color substitution wasn't substantial. They also did put some extra ranunculus, which I understand are expensive, the final product was still filled with yellows and greens. The picture on the website has more contrast. I would have thought a florist would agree that yellow and green are next to each other on the color wheel, and aren't complementary colors. It would have been great if they'd at least acknowledged this, or thrown in some other colored flowers for contrast, but what we got was quite different from the image online. I'd give them a 2 for the actual design and a 2 for their customer service. I appreciated that they took the time to talk with me at all, but honestly they didn't offer anything to us, and we just spent almost $100 on a small, unattractive present. They just said if we ever go there again we should be more specific about what we want. The tone was polite but not compassionate. Wouldn't want to work with them again, since they aren't willing to let the customer's experience be valid, and may need more specific direction on what makes a bouquet visually appealing. read more

This is long overdue. I have been compelled to write this, but our experience was so emotionally disturbing that I felt I needed time to think it through. On May 10th, 2020 I recommended that my boyfriend go to Arjan Flower's for a Mother's Day bouquet. I had called a man who worked there beforehand to ask if curbside pick-up was acceptable being that there is a social-distancing policy amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. In the phone call, the man had welcomed us to come by and choose as they still had a variety despite the demand for flowers so late in the day. When we arrived, we had our doubts with whether or not we can go inside being that the shop was small but a woman said that we can come in. We started picking flowers and the woman helped us out. My boyfriend had pulled my sleeve to keep my distance away from the woman as I had gotten carried away with designing the bouquet. Seconds later, I recognized the same voice of the man we had been on the phone with yelling to us from the back of the shop "6 feet!" Within minutes the same man had yelled "6 feet homie!" and the woman and I designing the bouquet looked at each other confused. My boyfriend retorted back "Who are you talking to? I'm not your homie. Why don't you address me as sir or young man!" In seconds the man at the back said "We don't have flowers, leave!" and my boyfriend responded with "I'm just trying to buy flowers for my mom!" The man then put his hands up, pretended to walk outside and threatened saying "If he gets his flowers, I quit!" His manager from the back came out and yelled "Get out!" to us. My boyfriend continued arguing with the man at the counter and the woman helping us pick flowers was as shocked as I was. Moments later, the heated argument was taken outside the shop. All the while, the man my boyfriend was arguing with remained untouched. Before I knew it, his manager started calling the police and the man had instructed the woman to take pictures of our license plates. The both of us went inside the car and the man teased "We got your plates!" He continued yelling that the police can charge my boyfriend for 'verbal assault.' We left and I couldn't help but cry worrying about how deeply a non-violent dispute can escalate to a lawsuit because they are a white storefront in Piedmont and we are people of color. read more

She will use non-ripe berries and other pops of nature that create some of the most unique arrangements you've ever seen! Can't say enough good things..if you're in the area and need flowers or want a pick me up.. this is the place! I seriously came in a week or so after my wedding to cleanse my palate of some serious basic bitch flowers supplied by my florist near my venue. they were awful and I couldn't stop wishing I had at least got a bid from Arjan and wondered what she could have done for our wedding instead! Mina is wonderful! She created all the reception flowers for a friend's small wedding. She was able to work with you regardless of your budget (big or small). She was easy going, calm and very creative. The shop reflects this, it's small but tasteful and has everything from plants, pots, flowers and anything and for any occasion. On the wedding day, Mina was one of the first vendors to arrived and left only after she ensure she placed every last corsage/boutonniere on the wedding party. She created a corsage for the flower girl in a pinch as it was not even part of the order. Her arrangements for the reception was gorgeous and elegant (pictures included). Even on a very limited budget, she gave the bride what she wanted. She decorated the guest book table, the sweetheart table, added flair to the cake table, and provided the flower girls with all the dried lavender for the ceremony. She offered her excellent advice on the placement of the arrangements. If you want no worries for your events, select Arjan and trust Mina. I was so pleased to find this corner florist on fun Piedmont Ave! The selection and beautiful textures make me think I'm in a fairy land. You will be sure to have an unusual, magical bouquet. I was there on a Saturday and Bill and Amy were very pleasant and helpful without being salesy. They knew the names of the flowers and how long they would last (which was accurate because I'm writing after the flowers lasted more than a week). They even gave me a cup of water to get it home without wilting. I got most of the flowers for my wedding bouquets from here in December. It was beautiful but I had someone else arrange them because the owner can be unfriendly so that is the only reason I'm taking away a star. I'm a huge fan!! This is my ideal type of flower shop- more of a Salon dedicated to flowers, arranged in beautiful containers on lovely tables, lavish textures, colors, scents, and selection, with doors swung open wide and only one refrigerator in the back of the shop behind the counter- in sharp contrast to typical American flower shops, which i find to be quite sterile and ugly. I have very specific floral design tastes having worked on farms, in the cut flower industry, and in some florist shops myself. Hands down Arjan Flowers would be my choice for gifting, getting, and events for which I wanted to purchase flowers. She has lovely and amazing orchids, too- very unique and spectacular blooms that she finds at the SF Flower Market. I went in recently and asked for a $25. bouquet, with hyacinths as the main flower. (It was Spring, when they are in season and readily available, also cheaper at this time). I sort of held my breath because I didn't quite know what $25 would get me here. I was delighted! I assure you, the bouquet was spectacular in every way. I presented it as a gift for a special Birthday girl, but indirectly, trying to impress her Mother, and I think I did! I'm sorry to say I had a bad experience at Arjan--particularly disappointing because it started with such promise. I was at lunch with friends on the street and passed by the shop, which immediately pulled me in with its gorge, unique, and well-curated tablefuls of flora. As soon as I walked in the door I knew I was ready to drop $50 on a bouquet for my dining table that would wow all my houseguests. The woman behind the counter stayed silent, so I waited--I figured she'd get to me in a minute and put together an awesome arrangement (the store was otherwise empty). So I waited. And waited. And waited. Loitered by the counter. Looked at her curiously? ...waited... And then I was pretty far over it. Interest wilted on the vine, if you will. I was over trying to buy some flowers in a place that didn't have any interest in selling them to me. So I started to leave...and as my back foot crossed the threshold, I heard her say "Sorry." I have visited Arjan a number of times, and every time, I have been knocked out by the quality and variety of extraordinary flowers that Mina is able to find. The other day I brought a friend in to see the shop, and I was able to get a nosegay of violets! I have not seen violets like that for about 30 years. The dahlias are stunning, and she had variegated dogwood branches, olive branches with olives on them, narcissus and you could get a little bunch of forget-me-nots! And she had a new variety of scented rose that was gorgeous and smelled like heaven. Maybe 3.5 stars. I was walking down Piedmont Ave yesterday and popped into Arjan to get some flowers to bring to a dinner party. I had the owner help put something together for me. There wasn't a huge selection of flowers, but perhaps that helps with keeping the flowers fresh. The arrangements on display in the shop were sophisticated and modern. I think that they can do some nice quality designs. My only comment was that they filler blossom type flowers that I got for my bouquet were not that hearty and were wilting the next day. And like all florists... significantly more expensive than buying bouquets from Whole Foods/Safeway/TJs. I've recently been reviewing a handful of florists. I like Arjan's style. That's just preference, and hence 4 starts. Based on quality of flowers and price, maybe your average 3 stars. I'd definitely recommend checking it out though! read more

SO AMAZING!!! Okay- So I can up with a brilliant idea for some friends of mine and needed to execute it in less than 24 hours. It was complex, it was goofy but I was certain that they needed a beautiful floral arrangement WITH slips of paper with inspirational quotes. Mina was amazing, she came up with a few ideas to make my vision possible, all long distance. I ordered by 2 yesterday afternoon, emailed the quotes to her in the evening and she managed to deliver a great arrangement, beautiful pot with a bowl for the quotes.
