I wrote kind of a bad review but in retrospect, I go to A WIlly's maybe 4 times a year. I've been her 20 year. Yeah... I had a bad night. Maybe I've been there 80 times -- yikes time flies. Since then I have been going Fridays (pre 6 PM) to get buy 1 get one half off salad. You know what. Armadillo WIlly's is still solid. So I have updated my review. Ordered and shared a Texas trinity bbq plate with some Texas tots and Caesar salad. Meat was great especially the ribs but sides were just okay: tots were tasting very greasy and the salad had so much cheese and dressing it didn't feel nor look healthy at all. read more

Pretty much the best Armadillos in the Bay Area, the other two in San Jose comes in solid second. The ribs here are always cool juicy and nice and dried out. The pull pork was good and even the tri-tip which I prefer rare but was cooked well done was great and juicy too. The place was okay, looks like a typical western barn houses. The walkway to the front wasn't bad but the bathroom was okay, but those are just minor details. The drink was placed for easy access and seats were well spaced. As for the food, the quality as I said is the best of the Armadillo chain in the area. Nothing is burnt and if you see something burnt, the chef will make sure you are happy with it. I'm from Texas and I know real Texas Bar-B-Q. I think it's O.K. Its not the best bar-b-q I've ever had but for a Californian, I would say would be the closeset thing to Texas food as you can get. As far as the beer selection, they have Shiner Bock which is an excellent beer to have with the food. The paper towels for napkins are a great idea to make you feel Texan. Got here super early for dinner because the lines this last Thursday were super long and the wait was 1hr. We got here at 5pm and ended up waiting about 20mins which wasn't too bad but this place was still super packed. We decided to order the ribs, brisket, chicken with beans and slaw. After living in KC for about a decade it's good to find a decent BBQ place in the south bay. I tried the chicken/ribs/brisket combo with corn bread and beans. (I was really jonesing for some BBQ so I decided to hedge my bets). The brisket was really good, and the chicken was great. Perfect mix of smokey and sweet bbq sauce. The ribs were simply OK, but good enough I would get them again if I was really wanting some. The corn bread was pretty good too and bigger than I expected. A little smaller than a starbucks muffin (which is freaking huge). The beans were pretty standard fare. I prefer the sweet molasses style of BBQ baked beans and there were more the soupy bean/meat mix. Kinda bland but not bad. I'll probably get something different next time though. read more

After coming here several times for a year (around 20 times i would guess, once a month sometimes 2) i have a pretty solid understanding of each dish. Juicy/Lean Brisket 5/5: Of the 14 times i have ordered brisket, it has been moist, bursting in flavor, and not overly greasy 12 times. This is the one dish you can generally rely on in this particular Armadillo Willy's and is really only lackluster if ordered around 4-7, as it loses its juiciness. That or its a coincidence both time i ordered at that time it was dry. Ribs / Baby Back Ribs 3/5 : The ribs here are a majority of the time dry and do not fall off the bone or come close to it. The meat is on the tougher side and never really satisfies of the 11 times i have ordered them. There was maybe one good day for the ribs, other than that they are lackluster, their only saving grace being the delicious rub on the skin. Prime Rib 3/5: The prime rib here is decent, has a faint taste of blood you want from prime rib, has enough juiciness to be prime rib, but ultimately lacks flavor and anything special to be ordered often. Really lacks aggressive or subtle flavors and is just average Pulled Pork 2/5: The pulled pork here is rather average, often being outclassed by a Mexican restaurant i visit in terms of smokiness and flavor, which to be honest should not happen. The pulled pork here often is bland and does not have delicious fragment of burnt skin on them or the smoky juiciness that pulled pork should. I could get this kind of pulled pork by making it myself on a stove. Turkey 2/5: I haven't ordered turkey often but the times i did it was rather dry and lacked much flavor, granted turkey is a more muted flavor in general. However nothing is done to make the turkey taste like turkey and tastes more like overcooked and unseasoned chicken. Sides 2/5: The potato salad, beans, tots, and bean slaw are all lacking in flavor and substance. They add very little to the meal and do not feel like the supplement your BBQ experience at all. read more

Well, last time I was here, late evening, they were OUT of ribs and chicken, to my suprise. But, I soon learned their meats take hours to BBQ and they do not serve left over BBQ. Great food. Poorly run business. Came in Sunday @6pm. Knew what I wanted walking in the door. Two people at the registers. But both were bombed with phone orders and stupid DoorDash orders for 10+ minutes while I was at the register feeling like I was invisible. Don't People in the restaurant, in person, have a priority? This Sunnyvale location is pathetic. Just picked up food here tonight. Amazing that a Caesar salad takes so long to make while your hot food gets cold. I'm so disappointed in this place tonight while waiting on our food, dirty floors, bbq sauce area is dirty with sauce down the front of the dispenser, soda machine is out of 4+ flavors and the bathroom towel dispenser was out in men's room. I've had other meals there that gave me petrified tater tots and chicken that's was dry and very over cooked. Finally asked about our food after 3 other orders that were placed after ours and it was delayed because of a Caesar salad. I love the food. But your managers are in need of professional help and expertise. Let me explain. Three weeks ago I dined here for lunch. I ordered the ribs with extra meat. The cashier made a mistake and there was extra pulled pork on my plate instead of extra ribs. No big deal. I asked the kitchen staff to switch it out and they called the manager (a woman) who got into a total hissy fit, making a case that it cost $1 additional dollar. I would have paid it, not issue with me. She instructed the staff to correct it, but her attitude was horrible. She looked at me as if it was my fault and didn't say anything such as, "I'm sorry, we will take care of it". That is usually the appropriate response. I actually felt bad about the situation. Now is where it gets really weird. Today, I dined here three weeks later. I ordered the smoked turkey with extra meat and french fries. I sat at my table and watched ten, yes #10 people get their orders before me. I walked up to the kitchen line and asked the guys if they had my order. The lead guy looked up and said, "yes you're next". I got back and sit down. I see them serve five more orders, but not mine. I go back to the line and ask them what's going on. They looked like a deer in headlights and said they would work on my order. I got really mad and slammed my order confirmation electronic gadget thing on the table. Well that brought some attention. So this "manager" guy comes over and asks me what's going on. I told him what I just experienced and I need my food. I only have a limited time for lunch and the last time I was here they screwed up my order and made me feel as if I was wrong. I told him to get his GD kitchen in order. Yes, I said it! He then proceeds to lecture me on how fine the BBQ is at the restaurant and that 10 minutes or longer is not too long to wait for my order. I told him, you are wrong. If your food is not ready, then you need to instruct your cashiers to tell the customer that the turkey is not ready. I can deal with that. I woke up at 6:30 a.m. today, started working at 7:30 a.m. Your restaurant hours are 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. If you can't get your food ready, then you need to adjust your kitchen schedule. During this heated conversation my order became ready. I went to retrieve it. I walked back to my table and he followed me. I told him to leave me alone. He stated to me, "You don't have to come back here" I told him again to leave me alone. He continued to blather about and I told him a third time to leave me alone and to let me eat my lunch. He continued to talk to me admonishing me. I told him a fourth time to "get out of my face NOW". He then finally left. I could not believe it. This fool is a manager? He has no concern for customers. I finished my lunch and as I left approached the cashiers to ask them the name of this so called "manager". Kyree and the lady at the counter refused to give me his name. I couldn't believe it. I surmise the manager told them if I asked for his name to not give it to me. I told Kyree, "It's okay, if you don't want to give it to me, I'll add your name to my complaint to the owner." He then said, "His name is Anthony" and started laughing. This manager needs to be fired. And you need to clean house in this restaurant. I should send the Health Department in to see if there are any health violations, as well. This is not the end of this. I am reporting you to your Corporate office. read more

This review will probably end up with the other negative reviews in the "not recommended"section but I'm going to write it anyway. Disappointing to say the least. Waited way too long for a burger and fries (almost 30 mins.) and fries were cold and burger was like leather (supposed to be med. rare). I ordered a side of their formerly delicious coleslaw and it was bland, mushy and had one peanut in it. Over $60 for a family of three (my husband had pulled pork sandwich w cold fries and son had Trinity platter which included cold food and tough ribs. Came here for dinner tonight and showed up at 5:50 PM. The only meat they had available was turkey, cheese sausage and chicken. I understand selling out and your disclaimer in your menu, but at 5:50? Cashier said it would be an hour before anything was ready. Called back 30 minutes later and the response was still an hour. It's a bbq joint! This place let's you choose between juicy and lean brisket. That is a first for me and I love it because brisket was always hit or miss before. Their ribs are also nice and soft. You can tear the rip tips off the St. Louis ribs easily with your hands. Their tater tots were also nice and crunchy. read more

Went there with hubby this Monday night at 7pm for their "Monday Night "Eat All You Can Ribs" Daily Special. When we were in front of the cashier to order this, she tells us that they were all out. Now, tell me Armadillo Willy. How can you ran out at 7 pm when this is your daily special? You advertise the daily special to be available from 4 pm - 9 pm, so why ran out at 7pm? BBQ ribs are supposed to be your specialty and don't tell me you did not see this coming (i.e. running out). I think the truth is that YOU WANT TO MINIMIZE your loss on your ribs. And please, don't give us the excuse that your ribs are special and that they take a l.o.n.g time to cook. Are you telling me then that its BAD MANAGEMENT on your part that you did not expect that you will ran out of it? Also, the place was not packed at all. Please do us a favor by advertising your "Eat All You Can Ribs" as only for the first 5 customers! Armadilly Willy, you are not the only rib place. This place used to be really good. Now it is pretty inconsistent. Some days are very good, others not. The fries can be perfect - tender and crispy - or awful - burnt and soggy? Sometimes the burgers appear to have been precooked and rewarmed, charred and missing chunks. Best bet is to order the pulled pork if you want a sandwich. read more

I have been frequenting various Willy's locations for 30 years, first the Los Altos location, then Cupertino, and since I moved to Sunnyvale it has been this location. I have probably eaten at AW more couple hundred times over the years, so not a noob. Our experience last night at this location was outrageously bad. It was busy, but I have seen it much busier. We waited patiently to place our orders, and all went well to that point. But we had the nerve to order beer to go with dinner. Both of the young ladies working the order counter were too young to serve, so the one helping us tried to get one of the two people apparently allowed to serve to handle the task. They put her off so she asked us to step aside and wait. Over the next 15 minute, yes 15 minutes, she repeated asked them to serve me and they kept putting her off. They were too busy looking over take-out order, which no one had showed up to pick up, which was apparently more important than someone standing there waiting. After 15 min the male person who was apparently the manager on duty asked me what I was waiting for; I told him it was the beer the young woman had repeatedly asked him to serve. He then turned it to my problem: 'they are too young to serve' (yes, I know, which is why I have been waiting 15 minutes while she repeatedly tried to get the attention of both you and that lady to handle the task), 'I am busy' (yes, but busy looking at bags of food no one is picking up is not a good type of busy when other folks are waiting right in front of you), etc, then it digressed into his railing about how he had to (gasp!) multitask. I was the problem, in his opinion. He never did serve me the beer, the other person (a woman) who was allowed to do that eventually handled it. Then it was another 30 minute wait for the food. Yes, 15 minutes then 30, so 45 minutes after we ordered to get our food. The place was never more than 2/3 full; I have seen it at times when no seat was available and at those times the service was never that slow. I guess it is time to find an alternative place for smoked meats, at least until they can get better management. read more

Beware of rip off. The menu says the Small Plate includes a side, but actually only contains the meat you order ($10.00 for 4 tiny ribs). You have to pay $1.00 extra for any sides you want. The wait time is ridiculous and everything is overpriced. read more

i like the los altos location of armadillo willy's much better. that one looks so nice inside. the service at there is much friendlier. also, the food is a bit tastier and better presented there. i mean, i guess the recipes are probably the same between the two. like, the side dishes were pretty good at this one as well as the other, but the bbq ribs tasted much better at the los altos one. the los altos one has a full bar, but i don't think this one does. read more
