All pastries are freshly made back to back. They have a full assortment of every kind to choose from. We decided on a Morning Bun and a plain croissant. They were both soft and yummy. The croissant was very flaky and moist. The bun tasted similar to a cinnamon bun... but even better. My wife had a Vanilla latte and I had a Chai tea with a few accommodations. I fell in love with Arsicault the first time I was introduced. The assortment of baked goods including breads, quiche, croissants, cookies, loaves, kouigns, scone, vegetable galette and apple turnover. The coffee bar turns this bakery into a one stop shop with offerings of espressos, lattes, mocha, tea, cold brew and others. Sandwiches are also available, prepared cold. Within the UN Civic Center Plaza, it is a short walk from Civic Center Bart. Definitely worth a stop on your morning or afternoon commute to pop in, grab some bites then head back out or take a seat in the bakery and enjoy inside or out. The bakery is sectioned off by a gate, so it is kept clean and external to the traffic in the area. With their hours of 8a to 3p daily, it is a perfect breakfast, brunch, lunch, late snack spot. The service is always friendly with smiles and great service. The goods are constantly made throughout the day and replenished regularly. If you haven't tried this iconic SF bakery, you're missing out. Arsicault has some of the best chocolate croissants I've ever had. They're buttery, rich, and hefty, full of crème. You can order them with almond, chocolate or blackberry, but I personally think you can't go wrong. They've also got kouignamann and cookies which are both pretty good as well. One downside to this location is that it's a bit dirty and it doesn't seem like the staff cleans much inside, although they themselves are fairly friendly. read more

They're so flaky. But in a good way. Winner of Bon Appétit magazine's Best New Bakery in America (2016), this is still the gold standard a decade later. The devil on my shoulder wants to dismiss them as "donuts for girls", but the angel points out that the butter-heavy lamination means the items shatter in paper-thin golden flakes even though the insides are tender and airy. The almond croissant and a chocolate almond croissant were great. The must try is the Kouign Amann because it's sweeter and the caramelized sugar makes it chewy and flaky. The ham and cheese is the perfect breakfast sandwich that doesn't have a Mc in it. The coffee (they partner with local roasters Flywheel Coffee Roasters) was better than average. This location isn't as pretty as it could be. Scuff marks, underused space, dinginess, but having a working, clean bathroom, replenished inventory, and great service makes up for it. read more

Don't be intimidated by the line it moves quickly. Pastries are served warm which is quiet amazing when you bite into the chocolate croissant into some warm chocolate not to sweet and pretty rich. Omg the crunchy outer shell yet soft center of the Kougin Amann was amazing. Definitely don't skip this one. It was everything you hope a flavored, twice baked croissant will be. Buttery, flaky, shatteringly crisp on the outside, tender and chewy on the inside. The blackberry compote balancing the sweet almond paste, so even though it's very sweet, you still greedily want more. By contrast, the plain, chocolate, and ham and cheese croissants are light and airy, showering you with buttery flakes as you break them open. Service is efficient, trying to kept the line moving. I ordered a lot of stuff but the staff was really sweet and patient, offering recommendations when I asked. The display is helpful, with everything clearly labeled and super enticing to be honest. This time I tried the blackberry croissant and kouign aman, unfortunately the were cold by the time I got back (really can't blame them for that) but they were still delicious. If you've been to either location you know Arsicault knows how to do baked goods. Still the best croissants I've ever had. Sometimes there is a long line, especially at the other location, but this one is always fairly reasonable. Absolutely nightmare to find parking, but it's worth it. Best to come in pairs so one person can drive around and the other can go get it. I'm sure many transit riders come here and it is so good it is worth the bother.
