Went to Berkely for a concert and my friends who went to UC Berkely said Artichoke is a must try. We ordered two slices of the artichoke pizza to try and it was so good. You wait in line and pick out which slices/pizza you want. They bake/heat it up in the oven while you wait outside as there is no seating, it's more of a grab and go type of pizza shop. They then hand it to you fresh and steaming hot. The pizza is in the heavier side, which a white sauce, artichokes, and lots of cheese. It is a very creamy pizza, but if you live artichoke it is a must try. I understand why this is one of the late night spots for students. Really miss the NYC Artichoke pizza and this is the next best thing!! The signature Artichoke slice is creamy and rich and delicious with that unique artichoke flavor. When you ask them to heat the slices, the cheese is perfectly heated and gives that amazing cheese-pull effect. The Margherita pizza is delicious too though not as unique in flavor compared to the Artichoke. Portions are huge and well beyond the usual pizza slice size! Compared to NYC Artichoke Basille's pizza, I'd say the crust is thicker and the Artichoke flavor less intensely rich thick and oily. However, an exceptional option in the Bay nonetheless! Service is great, they toasted up our pizza and gave a generous amount of Parmesan and red pepper packets with our pizza. Ambiance is more "authentic" to the NYC aesthetic, and they have a lot of shaded seating and standing eating areas outside the shop. Overall, if I'd never had the pleasure of experiencing the NYC branch, I'd definitely be giving this location 5 stars!! Artichoke's, as most of us call it at Cal has been a late night staple for many years at the top right corner of Asian Ghetto located on Southside in Berkeley. Depending on when you swing by, you can be greeted with a line out the door, or immediate service which comes with about 5-10 minute wait. The food has always been delicious, decently sized, and with super fair pricing. Typically, this is the place I enjoy going to after a night drinking with friends. You have the leisure to take you order to go, or if enjoy your meal right outside as they have a sitting and standing area right at the corner of the block. Like I said, depending on when you arrive, we usually dictate your wait time but also the experience you have right outside. It can be noisy when school is in session, or if it's a weekend in the summer. If you happen to come on a weekday chances are, it'll be pretty chill and you can enjoy yourself alone or with company. I've never had a bad experience here and the food is always outright delicious. It's an easy 5/5. read more

It was my first time to the well-loved Artichoke Basille's and it did not disappoint! The star of the show was definitely the Artichoke pizza. I went to visit my daughter who's a UC Berkeley freshman for lunch, she said let's try out Artichoke Pizza! First off let me say the customer service was top tier for a pizza spot. I was so undecided on what to get so I asked the guy taking orders ( He had to be the Owner because he was great ) what's the BEST and he said all of them lol. I said okay let me try the Pepperoni of course, the Margherita since it's popular, and the Vodka slice. He heated them right up and we had a huge box within minutes. When I opened the box I was shocked at how the slices were still huge and looking delicious after being heated in the oven. He even threw in a few Artichoke slices for us to try!! Wow what a nice guy. So we took the pizza outside and tried them all. I can honestly say each slice was delicious, extremely flavorful and worth the money. Chabot had their first day today and I think UC too - and so the street was full of students eating pizza late at night. They must know whats good?! The restaurant itself is very personality packed although with little seating. Decorated walls and tiny tiles on the floor. The main focus is the pizzas of course on display. Artichoke, thick crust, basil and so many more options. I got a basil as it looked lighter than the signature pizza with white sauce. It was put in the oven and the transaction was quick efficient and friendly. Pipping hot pizza served on two overlapping paper plates. Outdoor seating was plentiful and the crowd friendly. I wasn't a fan of the cheese somehow - seemed not to be of the quality I'm used to from North Beach in the city. Somehow it didn't melt the right way or something. The cheese would schlip and schlide over the sauce. Messy - or maybe I just need more practice eating pizza? On a more positive note the sauce was fine and the thickness of the crust was good too. No bubbly crust as I'm a sucker for though. The worst part of the pizza was the crust. It seemed more like toast. Double baked heavy duty. I'm a bit forgiving but I'm no stranger to by the slice at midnight and the others do it better. Value was ok. I think a bit more expensive than Tony's in the city - and I think if your going to be as pricy as the best you really have to live up to that to get that last star. Overall, you have to be from the neighborhood. Better options would be Cheeseboard or Paxtis/LittleStar but those take much more time. read more

Seriously - it's 930 at night and no one would be able to convince me that this pizza was cooked as recently as even 12 hours ago. Too hard and disgusting to eat. Just much different then what you expect college pizza on a budget to taste like - Berkeley has morphed from a free spirited dream to something a little more commercialized over the years - It's still charming, but with a little less mom/pop appeal. I ordered a slice of their artichoke ($5.94). It's a slice of pizza toppped with spinach cream sauce over pecorino romano + mozzarella cheese topped with artichoke hearts and spinach. Wow was this slice of pizza decadent. Whew! I could only manage a few bites before I threw in the towel. The other slices looked promising and kinda a good value for under $5 bucks. August 2024, Move-In Day for our newest Bear. We finally finished and were walking to the Cal Student Store to get some Cal Merch. While walking, we spotted this Pizza place. We were actually kind of hungry and the pizza looked good. We walked in and were greeted by the friendly staff. Since it was our first time at this place, we decided to get 3 different slices. We got the Vodka Sicilian Square, Margherita Slice and Artichoke Slice. The Vodka Sicilian was there version of a deep dish pizza. It was very good and fulfilling. It seemed like it was a focaccia type crust. Thick, but not dense. The Margherita slice was good. You can taste the basil and the crust was nice and crisp. The star of the trio however was the Creamy Artichoke slice! It was not like any "common" pizza slice. The sauce was really good and creamy. I really wanted to order another one to go, but I didn't want to carry it around while we were strolling around. But I will be back for that Artichoke Pizza! Most likely a whole one next time haha. It took around 10 minutes to get six slices of pizza. I definitely underestimated how huge these slices were! Although they are big, the crust of the pizza is still crispy and able to hold up the hefty amount of sauce on the top. I originally had tried this in NY and was happy to stumble upon this here in CA! You walk in and the pizza options are behind the counter. You can order by the slice or a whole pizza, but they'll heat it up for you and in a few minutes you'll have a toasty warm pizza! I would definitely recommend trying the artichoke pizza bc it's their signature! It is creamy so for those who are lactose, be aware! But the crust is crunchy and a good thickness in my opinion to hold the cream sauce with pieces of artichoke! There is street parking only, but we didn't have too much trouble finding parking on some of the neighborhood streets. They do have TVs so the game was playing when we walked in, and occasionally have live music as well! It literally tastes like Alfredo/pesto pasta flavor and garlic bread flavor! It was soooo good and the cheese was amazing!
