First time I ever had Artichoke Basille's was in New York and it blew my mind. It was definitely in the top 3 best pizzas I've had in my life and so I had high expectations for this location. Happy to report that it did not disappoint. The slice was so creamy, huuuge, and indulgent. It's not something I would eat everyday, as it's extremely heavy but a great treat to have here and there. Stopped in because of the raving reviews & because I had a craving for pizza but didn't want to buy a whole pizza. I'm a lover of NY pizza & have been looking for something that can compare. The slices were huge which was a good start but the flavor was overpowered by the saltiness...and I mean, it was super salty. I had ordered a classic pepperoni slice & was left disappointed & sad because I really wanted to enjoy it. I wound up tossing it out (I know, I know, it hurt me too) because it was too salty. My first pizza experience here was mind blowing! I heard about this so much that I drove for an hour to get there my late night snack! And the drive was all worth it! They have don't have many options in vegetarian pizza but whatever they have is the best! I ordered a slice of Margarita pizza, it was huge and delicious. They do have other option of Artichoke cream. People who love cheese a lot would definitely love it. I took couple of bites from my friend's slice for Artichoke pizza, and it was melting in my mouth! I love this place. The first time I had this was when I visited a friend in Berkeley. He had bought a whole Artichoke Pizza to share with a handful of others. Since I visited the day after, my slice was cold, but amazing none-the-less. The cheesiness and artichoke-yness was in perfect combination. It felt like I was eating spinach and artichoke dip (minus the spinach) on a piece of dough. I made a mental note of this place and came up with a plan to visit. When I visited, the staff behind the pizza and cash register heated up my artichoke slice. The slice was the size of my face, and was only about $5.25 after tax. He heated it so that the cheese was ooey-gooey, slightly running, but was still hard enough to stay on the dough. It was fantastic. I ended up grabbing two slices to go. read more

My bf and I were able to quickly grab 2 slices here for lunch on Sunday. No lines, which is great! We sat at the bench style seating on the sidewalk and enjoyed our slices. We got a pepperoni and an artichoke. We really enjoyed the pizza here. The crust was on the thinner side, a *little* bit floppy because the slices are so big, but it still had a really nice crisp. We personally love pepperonis that curl up a little into cups and hold pools of oil (lol, healthy, I know), and these did exactly that. The artichoke is the namesake, so it's good obviously, but it is a little much as a whole slice. If you come here only for one slice, I would recommend not getting the artichoke since the flavor can get a little boring after 2 bites. read more

You really have to be in the mood for one of these, or else the richness is a bit overbearing. After your order your slice, they'll reheat it in an oven in front of you. Price & Portion: I think Artichoke Pizza is known for their large slices. I would say that a slice of pizza from here is comparable to 2-2.5 slices of regular pizza elsewhere, and that's if you're looking at a large. For around $4, I'd say it's a FANTASTIC deal. Service & Ambiance: The service is mediocre, they're just there to get the job done. Usually takes ~3-5 minutes to get your food if there is no line. But on weekend nights the line tends to go out the door and around the corner. The wait then is usually around 30-40 minutes. It's a small place, with limited outdoor seating. The store front is small and there isn't really a place to wait for your pizza to heat up. It seems like theres always a small line forming, but service is quick. I tried lobster bisque, artichoke and vodka scillian. The artichoke is the best and a must try. Lobster bisque pizza tasted like soup and vodka scillian tasted like lasagna. We found Artichoke Basille's on Durant Street. This is a college spot and in the middle of lots of late night eateries and bars. Lots of college kids roaming around so be prepared for crowds! They seem to specialize in slices and you pick the slices that you want and they pop them in their oven. The slices are huge and a little pricey! I chose the Artichoke slice and Margherita slice. The Artichoke slice is similar to an artichoke dip on top of a pizza. It may not sound appealing but I really liked it! The margherita pizza was also good but one slice is very filling. The crust is crispy and flavorful. My son had a pepperoni slice and meatball. He said both were very good. For four slices and one drink it was $50! I'm not sure I would come back since it's in an area mostly frequented by drunk college kids but if you happen to be in the area and want a good slice of pizza, come here! read more

Giving 1 star for the size of the sloce because it was bigger than normal slices but it's also very expensive. The service was actually split so giving another star for the man at the register because he was nice but the blond short man making the pizza was rude! I asked the man in front a question and the guy in the back yells at me and seemed agitated by my question (asking if they had something available on their menu that I didn't see). Settled on this place for dinner because my friend said it was "pretty good" but tbh it's more like "just okay", unless you're drunk or got some munchies. At least the pizza slice is big and filling and worth your money. I still wonder if they gave me a smaller piece because I'm a smol girl- since they cut their pizza slice by slice and definitely NOT equal at all. It's okay, the slice was still bigger than my face. I just didn't have a good experience because I ordered and the guy forgot about it. :( What they do is ask a few people at a time which type of pizza they want and make them pay for it. These people then wait for their pizza slices to be popped into the oven for however long before it being taken out and served. The guy putting it in the oven can at least remember the order of pizzas he puts in but apparently not everyone's orders (maybe cause that system is weird af!). So I was very sad when my friend who ordered after me got his pizza and I didn't get mine. The cashier then said someone probably took my meatball when he was handing out pizzas- BUT UM NO!!! Because I was standing there the whole time hungry and waiting for my pizza slice!? Sadly went outside to check on my group of friends who all had their pizzas and EATING them to see if they had mine when I already knew the answer was no and came back to the cashier asking if there was a meatball in the oven. First time eating here. Was passing throughout town, and it came highly recommended from a local friend. I had a slice of the Artichoke, with Alfredo sauce? It was an 8 out 10, which is saying a lot for a shop that sells by the slice. 5 STARS based on quality of food, cleanliness of the lobby, and quick service. 3 STARS for the staff, specifically the cashier who didn't understand English very well, and the staff's inability to answer the phone, followed by a joke "we're to busy to answer the phone", when the store was not busy at all. 4 STARS overall rating. Really sad to see their crab pizza is no more, I would've gladly paid the price no matter what, but sometimes life doesn't work out that way. Their classic artichoke pizza is still hella bomb though and I would gladly drop by when I'm in the area just to pick one up. I'd walked or driven past Artichoke Basille's on my way elsewhere, but Joan C's review last month brought it to my attention and today I drove over to pick up 4 slices, 2 for Alan and two for me for dinner tonight. I found parking down the block and walked up. When I realized how huge the slices were I immediately downsized my order to one apiece, Vodka Sicilian for Alan and artichoke for me. The man behind the counter was very patient w/ my dithering. He started to heat the artichoke slice, but I told him we had a pizza stone at home and would heat it there. I picked up a salad at Kensington Circus Pub to go w/ it and when it was about 6:30 we preheated the oven to 400° and cooked the slices for about 10 minutes. Even w/ one slice each it was too much and we didn't finish either slice. The Sicilian was heavy, thick and bready, almost like focaccia w/ a tomato based sauce presumably containing vodka, the artichoke a huge wedge, the crust on the thicker side of thin. Both tasted good, but the artichoke, in particular, was very greasy and on the salty side, w/ fewer pieces of artichoke than I had anticipated. It's good pizza, but not great. We're unlikely to drive across town to have it again, particularly now that Cheeseboard has reopened. read more

Two words. Cold Pizza. Ya'll have a massive pizza oven that probably runs at hundreds of degrees and our slices got put in this said hot oven...and yet my pizza feels and tastes like it's been in sitting around in the cold air for hours....oh wait it has. Pizza dough itself is pretty authentic NY style. The flavors of the pizza toppings though we're just non-existent. The Margherita was so bland and ugh COLD as I said. The Artichoke had slightly more flavor but it was way too creamy for my liking and the flavor was so one note...cream...cream...and more cream. Not really any artichoke, garlic, or anything flavor. And even worse...COLD. And no I did not run around waving my pizza to cool it off. We ate quickly at the counter by the windows. Sorry guys your first spot out of NY needs some MAJOR help. read more

This place is a Berkeley classic! I decided to try it for the first time and it was definitely an indulgent pizza. I was expecting more of an artichoke flavor, but got more of a creamy soup kind of vibe. The pizza dough is really good though, very light and fluffy. But dang, this pizza is HUGE! Almost the size of your face. TLDR: I wish there was more artichoke flavor or something artichoke. It was more like a can of cream soup on pizza. Delicious, oily pizza after a night out drinking. Stays open late and the staff are friendly. On a Tuesday night, this joint was opened at 130 AM. We got a slice of crab, artichoke, and Margherita. We were a bit skeptical of the crab pizza... Considering crab can go wrong in many ways, but to our surprise- it was our favorite!! Delicious, sweet flavor with a nice thin crust. No sogginess at all, which is also surprising because it was after 1 AM. Even during late hours, the guys are tossing dough and making fresh pizza. The artichoke pizza was also very surprisingly good!! It had a cream-based sauce.. Which gave the artichoke great flavor. The Margherita wasn't too impressive.. So, I was thrilled when they opened a restaurant in California. SERVICE: The restaurants are small, with minimal room to stand and eat. The pizzas are often pre-made to the extent they finish cooking your slice/s, when you order. FOOD: Crab and margherita pizza are both good. Sometimes, the crab can be a little salty. However, the artichoke is the must order (I mean, it is literally in the name). It is not your traditional pizza. There is no tomato sauce, cheese is not the primary ingredient, and there are no toppings to add. Rather, it is essentially rich, creamy, and thick artichoke dip on a pizza crust. The BIGGEST slice of pizza I've ever had. $7 a slice?? Yea, because there like 14inches long!! I ordered one slice of the famous Artichoke and a slice of Pepperoni for safety with a drink. Be careful with going later in the day, the pizza does sit out and get warmed up in the pizza oven as you order. I went early so I felt more confident about the Pizza. Nonetheless, the slices were bursting with flavor, especially the Artichoke. They were warmed to perfection, dripping with cheese, and simmering with oil. Never have I had to pick pizza up with two hands. Next time I'm not wasting a slice on pepperoni, I want to try other flavors. The drink I ordered was small and overpriced(they charge for refill). Luckily the manager gave me a free refill before I left! There's no seating inside, it's a grab n go situation. A little bit of outside seating but people leave there trash and it's not very clean. Delicious option for pizza in Berkeley. I was a regular customer of the NYC locations, and they are still a requirement for any visit to the city. This location is good, and the quality is amazing for California pizza! New Yorker's be ware, they are not the same as NYC. The turnover in NYC is so high that the pie is always fresh, that's going to be tough for anyone to match when selling by the slice here, so it's not really a fair comparison. The crust ends up a little thicker and harder on the slices, and it seemed like my slice had been out of the oven for a while. read more

Looking at their website, it is the same franchise as the Artichoke's I remember having in NY. Though these were mostly regular triangle slices. They had a couple of square slices. I remember the ones in NY are square slices. But I got the giant-iest slice of artichoke pizza I've ever gotten - even bigger than Costco, which are usually huge too. They have all the pizzas all ready and sitting there but they'll heat it up for you in the oven. My artichoke slice was creamy and oh so delicious. It was so big, I couldn't even finish it so I took a third of it home. I reheated it the next day and oil was spilling off of it. So fatty. Haha. Bf had the pepperoni and sausage.
