Artie's just reopened in the last month after a devastating fire and they are as awesome as always! Food is great, atmosphere is fantastic and the staff are just stupendous! Fridays and Saturdays are very busy and recommend a reservation. The bar is a happening place and Remi the bartender is a great person to take your drink order. This is the best out of all the GARs. The service is always impeccable. The food is phenomenal. The hostess' at the front always greet you respectfully. I generally enjoy Artie's food, but that is if you can make it past the gauntlet of the Hostess stand! My husband and myself went last night (in fact) to dine at Artie's and we were told by the Hostess that the wait would be 5 minutes and was given a pager. We sat in the space available for those waiting and watched 5 sets of 2 person parties enter the establishment after us, be given a pager as well- and all 5 sets were seated before us! Come on Artie's, with the prices you charge your can really choose better Hostess staff right? We wound up leaving after we saw the 5th set taken...! When my husband turned the pager back is as we were leaving one of the hostesses stated "Sir is there a problem?".....I should not have to tell a bleached blonde 16-20 year old that her customer service skills are lacking and that they just missed out on money- the clincher is the restaurant wasn't even that full and I could see empty tables (Ridiculous) . I said on the way to another dining experience- "I am not sure that I will even ever go to Artie's again"...and I have done the "call ahead" in the past and have still had to wait so there is really no excuse for the LACK of CUSTOMER SERVICE. read more

I went there with a friend Saturday night. Great place. The food was amazing. I had the beef ribs and my friend had the steak and fries. This was one of those restaurants that I've drove past a thousand times. Stopped in and grabbed a seat at the bar. The restaurant was definitely busy, but the bartenders made sure everyone at the bar didn't need anything which was a plus. So needless to say the service was excellent and food was tasty. I know I'm not the first to have misunderstood this: At first I thought my mom was saying, "lets go to Arby's!". I had to do a curious double-take, not because I dont like Arby's--I actually do like them--but just I never would expect excitement spewing out of a fast food chain's name. Regardless, clarifications aside, even though I'm not an American food enthusiast I will delightfully enjoy Artie's when I come around to Virginia. This is somewhere where you would consider "gourmet" American food! Totes on-board yo (do you say stuff like this here?!). Food: - Complementary Doughnut Bread: A little basket of doughnut-like textured bread. Very hot but deliciously moist. Totally a fan, especially since it makes quite a unique first impression. Love it. Take them to-go, like we did. My mom is inlove with these - Blue crab fritters ($9). You get three fantastic fritters. Such a delightful and slight Asian flare mixed into them. Crispy outside and comfort inside. Absolutely mouth-watering and perfect for a simple appetizer that just warms you up with a blast of flavors that mixes really well with the inner crab. Awesome. - Louisiana Pasta ($13): Extremely creamy and saturated with sauce. And I'm not kidding about saturation. It screams comfort flavors with the spicy creole cream sauce, but it will mask any other flavors from coming to the surface. The chicken, andouille sausage, tomato, and even scallions get lost in the pasta. If your tastebuds are okay with that, go for it! Wonderfully perfect al dente penne with just the perfect firmness. - Rare Seared Tuna ($17): A crazy concoction of roasted red peppers, arugula, caramelized sweet onion, potatoes, roast mushrooms, goat cheese & black olive vinaigrette. That's somewhat of a funky mixture of ingredients but they play really well together in the light vinaigrette that dances with the base of the dish. It's really light to the senses. The seared tuna comes out fairly rare, so be prepared! Just the outer thin layer is seared, which gives it a special texture but leaves the inner to be very sashimi-esque. I love my fish like that so it was delightful. Be aware that this dish is kind of small in portion compared to some of the other heavier entrees. Also note the goat cheese throws me off, so I put it aside, but if you're into it...then by all means... - BLACKENED PRIME RIB ($31-36) (Thurs, Fri, Sat only): Holy smokes, I dont know how to fully explain the magnitude of this prime rib explosion. Imagine around 32oz of this fatty piece of steak. 1/4 of it is juicy fat and the rest is just heaven mixed in with the fat. Getting it medium rare gives a very thin outer layer of cooked beef and the inner being beautifully rare. Every piece practically leaves you begging for more as the natural flavors allows there to be no need or any other sauces. Dig into your rather well-garnished and buttery baked potato, and you're set. Seriously, even their baked potato is not just any regular baked potato. DO NOT get the Asparagus as a substitute--they only give you three spears. Seriously, three. Pros: - Fantastic quality American food. I'm swoon? - Helpful and courteous staff? Just dont ask complex questions about beer. Our waitress didnt really know what an IPA was and kind of just said whatever...yikes! - Simple interior that shoves in a slight diner feel a few decades back. Still a bit more upscale. Somewhere in between. Cons: - A little pricey, but worth it! - Wait times can be ridiculous apparently. Get reservations if you're coming for dinner! Tips: - Free appetizer next time by filling out a receipt survey? HECK YES. - Make a reservation. Seriously. Oh man, places like this redeems my painful relationship with American food. I know as Yelpers we have refined tastes, high standards, and incredibly good looks. But sometimes (and you can blame it on your foolish friends if you want), you end up headed to the dreaded *chain restaurant*. Seriously though, I'll definitely admit that I like Coastal Flats quite a bit. And I do enjoy an occasional meal at Sweetwater Tavern. As a member of the Great American Restaurants chain, I was expecting the same solid fare from Artie's when we stopped in before going to the bowling alley in the same shopping center. We were first surprised by the long wait on a Wednesday night, but since we were short on nearby options, we stuck it out with Artie's. I took note that the menu looked pretty similar to the other GARs so I thought the meal should be just fine. My friend, mostly kidding around, inquired why out of the four soups, that day's soup (the New England Clam Chowder if you must ask) was the only one offered only once a week (the other three were the soup du jours for two jours). He simply wanted to know if that was a B level soup, compared to the others' A rating. After a few laughs and many assurances that this was an A+ soup (compared to the other A++ scores of course), three out of the four of us ordered the clam chowder. Big mistake. It was way too salty and honestly didn't taste like any clam chowder any of us had ever had... and it wasn't an improvement either. My Mango Chicken Salad just wasn't as good as when I've had it at Coastal Flats. Coastal Flats will never skimp on dressing, but this salad was completely drenched and the pieces of chicken were really unappetizing. If you're stuck in Fairfax and you haven't eaten in several days, I might head to Artie's. But if you have the misfortune to be there on a Wednesday, do not order the New England Clam Chowder. read more

I have patronized Artie's since the late 1980s and it is disappointing that the last few times I have been there management's attention to quality and, in particular, customer service has fallen to an unacceptable level. A while back, a plainly inebriated waiter spilled a tray of drinks on my six year old child and myself. Management's solution was to offer a free dessert. I refused that offer and watched the manager's apologetic tone become one of resentment and initial resistance when I insisted they cover dry cleaning. The meal was not comped. Two weeks ago, I took my mother to Artie's for her birthday. She was enjoying her meal until she found a small rubber band in her food. The server took it back to show her manager who then turned up at the table with a new meal and claiming that the rubber band was actually a cross-section of a scallion. Neither my mother nor I had any appetite and did not want or need a new meal. I told the server we were too full for dessert and requested the check. She returned a few minutes later to tell us her manager had authorized a complimentary dessert. When I thanked her and refused the offer she handed me the check. We were charged for both meals. Those are last meals we will have at any Great American Restaurant (the chain the holds Artie's and other restaurants in the area). read more

Where do I start? This place is amazing. Despite some of the previous reviews I read, customer service was actually great and on point! Absolutely no issues there. OK here goes the lowdown: me and my hunny were celebrating our anniversary and a very important one at that, so we decided to go to a fancier place and treat ourselves. I told her to order anything she wants, so we each got an appetizer - the infamous blue crab fritters and the fried calamari. Simply put - both were superb. Amazing flavors, decadent sauces, extremely fresh seafood. Next, our entrees - prime rib special and baby back ribs meal. The ribs were perfectly smoked and literally fell off the bone and we are VERY particular about ribs. My prime rib was IMMENSE and fit for a 500 lb Medieval KING and I mean that literally. I wasn't expecting it to be that huge. That'll last me for several days. The taste was yummy.....perfectly seasoned. My only non - food related issue and this is VERY minor, is that the temperature in the restaurant was set on Alaska. It was immensely COLD. So I suggest you bring a big jacket if you go anytime soon. Other than that, awesome place that I will treat my hunny to once in awhile. Oh and their warm white chocolate bread pudding.....words can't even express my infatuation with the rich delicious peace of heaven that was on that plate. The best I've ever had in my entire life. The family and I were craving for Artie's famous aussie rolls. So, we head over to Artie's for brunch. No, we didn't go to Artie's just for the aussie rolls! Well, maybe... As always, the aussie rolls were yummy (extra butter is a must!). It just melts in your mouth..ahhh. Service at GAR restaurants is typically pretty great, but I would have to say that at Artie's it is better than any of the other restaurants. Maybe it is because the employees are intoxicated by that delish fried chicken. So, the fried chicken. It is a bit spicy, super crunchy, and never dry. I really enjoy eating it with the maple bacon syrup that comes with the waffle for a touch of sweetness. Now, the syrup. If I could being home that syrup in the tiny little glass pitcher it came in, I would. The syrup has the right amount of bacon without being too salty while still balancing the maple flavor. The fluffy waffle that comes with it is also icing on the cake. Always made perfectly. Their free bread basket is dangerous. You will want to keep munching on that carrot cake bread thing. That is my personal favorite whereas my sister and brother are addicted to the doughnut sugar covered ball things (Ozzie rolls?). All in all, a great brunch experience. It is pricey here, so I like to reserve coming here for special events or when you want to treat yourself. I recommend coming early as it gets crazy busy on the weekends. read more

I was in the mood for some sweet potatoe fries, I Yelpd "sweet potatoe fries" and this restaurant popped up. Oh how I wish this place had an ocean view!! The placement of this restaurant is very ODD. It's on the back corner of a strip mall, a couple doors down is some form of goodwill store, but all profits go to INOVA hospital (Odd) and then on the other side of this restaurant is the back side of all the other odd ball shops in this strip mall. Inside is another story, I kind of felt like I was on a ship (hardwood everywhere) and there's photos of ships all over this restaurant. Their bread's yummy, but the butter was even better! I really wanted to order the cobb salad, but the hubby made a good point for me to order something more than a salad for dinner. So I ended up ordering the smoked salmon w/parmesan potatoes and asparagus and he ordered the ahi tuna w/arugula salad and potatoes. I ended up liking my hubbys dish more than mine. My dish was very rich and creamy and his was light and tangy. And of course I ordered a side of sweet potatoe fries, which were perfection! Next time I come here, I'll make sure to come on a mon/tue b/c those are the only days they serve beef bbq ribs: I'd love to try that! read more

Just had lunch for four there. Great food, wonderfully presented, and superb service by Fallon, a young lady who was very attentive and extremely pleasant. I had Louisiana Pasta, which had great flavor and a really nice sauce to go along with the chicken and sausage with peppers. The others in my group enjoyed their dishes, too: grilled tuna and field green salad; hickory grilled chicken breast over angel hair pasta; and mango chicken and spiced pecans (another salad). My wife and I often go to the sister restaurants (Mike's American Grill and Silverado), which we also enjoy quite a bit. Oh, this place was just soo good. ORGASMIC. That's a better word. Came here with the folks, my brother and some family friends. Sampled some very good wine and ate an absolutely fantastic dinner. I recommend their Salmon - possibly the best salmon I've ever had in my LIFE - Short Smoked Salmon Filet - marinated, smoked and wood grilled, served with parmesan potatoes (to die for), jumbo asparagus and Dijon cream.. The Caesar Salad, also DELICIOUS. Great service. When we wanted a bag for our many to-go boxes, and they don't have to-go bags...the waiter went through the trouble of raiding the kitchen, for anything he could give us. Artie's feels like I'm eating at a grandparent's house. The nautical theme, dark wood, and dim lighting makes me think that there is a cigar room off to the side with a fireplace. But I digress. The fam had dinner here this past weekend. The menu seemed like all the same stuff at the other GAR which was disappointing, but the food was good as usual. I ordered the salmon and asked for the dijon sauce on the side and I liked it better that way. Everyone else ordered either the filet mignon or rib eye, and they all seemed pretty happy with their meal. It's always tough going out with the whole family because of the language barrier, but the waiter was really patient and never looked frustrated which was much appreciated. One thing that is annoying with GAR is their reservation system - they won't take reservations during certain times, like 6 PM when we wanted to have dinner. We had to call ahead before we left the house to see how long the wait was. Usually it's not a problem and they are pretty accurate, but it makes it a little stressful planning-wise when you have to be somewhere after your meal. read more

I love Sweetwater and Costal Flats. The quality is always excellent, and the service stands up well to massive crowds. We decided to try Arties, expecting pretty much the same. The menu was pretty much the same. The quality was a little lower, but not devastatingly so. The delicious short smoked salmon salad seemed to feature a slightly lower quality piece of fish than at Coastal Flats or Sweetwater. My chicken Cesar was covered with a confusing breading-like substance that erased all possible healthiness from the dish. The biggest problem is I kept wondering what was supposed to be special about Arties. Sweetwater has a beer menu. Coastal Flats has lots of seafood. Arties has....model boats?...a terrible parking lot? I see no reason to choose Arties over it's super-wonderful siblings, unless you are really into model boats. read more

Not so Great American Restaurant... I'm always wondered about a chain of restaurants, Great American Restaurants that all have the same menu with a bunch of different names. You would think there could be some consistency and in this case, there isn't. From my experience, the Costal Flats (Costals Flats ?) in Tysons and Fairfax are the best, followed closely by Sweetwater, also in Fairfax. Arties is well below those three, An undercooked burger, oversalted fries, and badly seasoned Tuna made for an uninspired meal. Not bad but not as good as multiple visits to the three restaurants just mentioned. The only saving grace was it was better than Silverado in Annandale. My recommendation is if you can make it to Arite's, driver the extra few (or fewer, depending on direction) minutes and head for Sweetwater. read more

Located just off Fairfax Circle & Old Lee Highway (next to a bowling alley in a run-down strip mall), this is a "family-style" restaurant which means be prepared for lots of kids whenever you happen to go (!) I've read maybe a dozen reviews and am in shock since no one has mentioned the most fabulous thing on the menu: the "crab fritters." Now before you get the wrong idea,- these are not deep fried nasties which their name would indicate. They are more like Manna from Heaven! They are light, airy, delicately encrusted (broiled or baked...not sure which) crabmeat morsels with some kind of magical batter (needle -thin baked shavings of dough?) that holds it together but you can't see it and it totally enhances the crabmeat itself! (Note to Yelpers: if anyone knows what or how those light crusty shavings are made,- puhleeez! let me know!) I've never had anything like it and trust me,- they are to die for!!! They come as an appetizer with a most unusual (spicy) sauce which you may want to ask for on the side (instead of providing the back-drop "pool-on-the-platter" as presentation). If these could be duplicated in a classier setting they would easily command double or triple their $16 price (for 3 slightly larger than bite-sized pieces). The rest of the menu was unremarkable. It's American cuisine which you can get at lots of places. (I would compare the "fritters" to the rest of the menu as a shiny new Lamborghini to a parking lot full of Toyota's! ...the "Toy's" are fine but they are not the ultimate TOY if u get my drift!) It is WORTH the trip out to Fairfax just to experience this one perfect creation! (I always get a couple of "to go" orders to enjoy later @ home but nothing beats fresh-from-the-oven!) read more

Good service and the food is fan-freaking-tastic. I can only speak for their brunch but considering it's part of the GAR chain, I'm sure lunch and dinner here is good too. If you are impatient and hate waiting (like myself) make sure to CALL AHEAD so they can get you a table as soon as you get there. Waiting sucks, especially if it's a busy time, you just need space up there and with people coming in and out, space is not something you really have. LOVE their French Toast with their fruit sauce thing, I get it every time. Eggs Benedict is awesome too and you must get a mimosa, yum yum yum! Waiters are super friendly but I feel that after they take your order, it's hard to get their attention if you need anything else. Just depends who you get, it's just more times than not I've experienced this lack of attentiveness. Another downside, if you don't have GPS or know where this place is, it can be annoying to find. When you do find it and come during busy time, parking is annoying too. Overall though, love this GAR, not one of my favorites (guess I don't feel the boat theme going on or the general layout, doesn't scream "fun" to me) but still a good spot for brunch. read more

Have a friend from out of town, client, family member? It has a quasi-yuppie feel, always elegant and clean and service warm and hospitable. The Aussie buns are amazing, its as if they sprinkled magic powder on these delicious little buns. the moment they enter my mouth it was as if i entered a fairy tail filled with sugary sweetness. For my entree i ordered the Filet Mignon topped with Hollandaise with home fries and a side of asparagus the Mignon was cooked perfectly as i ordered medium rare. my meal was not ruined as it would've been at the cheesecake factory. the home fries were pretty good too, but not the best I've had. Arties is a quaint little family restaurant that i enjoyed. the service was excellent and very friendly. it was very clean even the bathrooms were very nice. i will be coming back for some Aussie buns so Arties beware i'm coming for your buns!!!! read more

If you like Sweetwater Tavern- you'll like Artie's If you like Coastal Flats- you'll like Artie's If you are tired of both... you'll hate Artie's Seriously? Same exact menu, but 7 different restaurant names and all in Northern VA? Great American Restaurant, what have you done to my Artie's? I was introduced to Artie's back in the 90's and it was an eye opening experience to American food. If you are born in an Asian family, you would know that every celebration and family gathering take place at none other, but a chinese restaurant somewhere in Maryland. For us to eat at an american restaurant, it has to be amazing and there, we were introduced to Artie's. 15 years later, i thought it would be fun to do a wedding shower for my sister there, just somewhere that of remind us of our childhood and sure enough, my expectation were shattered as soon as i saw 'Crab Fritter' appear on the menu. And then i went on to read the rest to realize that it was the exact same dishes as Sweetwater Tavern which is only 1 mile away from our house. Worst of all, i made reservation for 12 and when we arrived, they had reserved 2 tables for 6 that are 3 feet apart from each other. We can't even pull tables together because they are bolted down to the floor. Note to self: Always do your research. The sense of overwhelming sense of accomplishment and knowing that all that dedication has finally paid off is probably indescribable. You're on top of the world and it has to be pretty damned satisfying. I've never climbed Everest. But, I, too, have faced a mountain. A heaping, never ending mound of meat in Artie's Blackened Prime Rib served only Thrus, Fri, and Sat. nights. Its a deliciously cooked slab of meat, bone-in, and oh so juicy. Yea, so I ordered it rare and there were a few stares of horror as I was shoving red flesh into my face and had my eyes roll back into my head. It takes a bit of dedication to finish this bad boy off....but sometimes instincts take over and a meat feeding frenzy ensues. I've been here twice and I know what you are already thinking. Yes, YOU... elitist Yelpers. Its a chain restaurant. The absolute horror! How can a non-hole-in-the-wall be worth out time at all? Well...its food is delicious. I've been here two years running for my wife's birthday, and we're thinking about going again and bringing the in-laws. Again. The prices are a little expensive, but the digs are pretty respectable. The service is on the spot about everything from bringing the food out promptly, refilling drinks, and just seeing if anything additional is needed. However, all these attributes would warrant a solid 3 stars, the 1/2 a cow I gorged myself on bumps it up to 4. They take reservations. Make use of that. Parking can be a bit tight, even out in Fairfax, so make a note. read more

I had the crab cake entree with poached eggs, biscuits and home fries. Personally, I could've done without the biscuits.. but overall, the dish was satisfying. read more
