I have friends and family members who had great experiences with Arukas Hair and I've been wanting to check them out too. I scheduled a haircut on their website with Wataru. Pricing can be found on their site when booking services. Overall, I loved my haircut at Arukas Hair! The salon is clean and welcoming. Wataru was very polite and I enjoyed chatting with him. I have difficulty clearly communicating how I want my hair to look, but thankfully I can trust Wataru to help me figure out what would work well for me. They also gave me a water bottle and an arm rest when I sat in the chair for my cut. My hair was washed, cut, and styled. My layers, face framing pieces, and bangs look a lot more balanced and refreshed. I appreciate that he didn't thin out my hair too much as requested and he always checked in with me before working on different parts of my hair. I've been searching for a new hairdresser in the Bay Area and recently booked an appointment with Yosuke -- and I'm so glad I did. From start to finish, the experience was incredibly relaxing. I especially appreciated the soothing hair wash, the cozy blanket for privacy, and the short head massage at the end. I could've easily drifted off to sleep! I explained to Yosuke that I have very fine hair, with more weight on the right side and some thinning at the ends. I have been going to Japanese salon everywhere because they are usually very good in taking the time doing the layers and thorough with checking the details after the cut. But this got to be the worst hair cut I have ever had. The cut was uneven and choppy. The layers were rough. I already pointed to the hairdresser that they were uneven when he finished. He fixed the couple parts I mentioned but didn't bother to check the overall cut. The next morning it looked even worse. Absolutely unprofessional. They did my hair for my wedding. They were willing to open at 7am just for me so I was very thankful for that so added a star for this review. So, it was my wedding day. The hairstylist kept talking about who is cheating with who and who is having affair with who in the Japanese community. I'm not writing the name of the stylist, but seriously this person ruined my wedding. Very negative vibe. Who wants to talk about cheating and affair with a bride to be on the wedding day? Unbelievably unprofessional. The outcome was horrible too. The stylist's overall skill level wasn't there. I could do the same hair style by myself. I really regret that I chose this place for my wedding hair-do. The experience I had with this hair salon on my wedding day still makes me so sad. If you speak Japanese and if you want to stay away from all the gossips around the Japanese community, this place is not for you. There is a huge gossiper in this hair salon. I've gotten a perm and cut from Arukas twice now, and I am probably going to come back. I had Kaz once and then Wataru the 2nd time, and they were both great. They worked quickly and were fun to talk to, and it was a really comfortable experience. Who knew you could get a perm, cut, wash, and style in only a couple hours? Wataru also made me laugh because he said he would cut my hair a little more because he knew I wouldn't come back in the recommended 6 months...and he's right. I had scheduled 2 appointments on one day one for myself and for my husband. When my husband had a meeting scheduled he immediately called the day prior 24 hrs + to cancel the morning appt. However they cancelled both appointments despite us calling to only cancel one scheduled that day. They also have preference for only online booking with no ability to change the appointment time. I understand the need to cancel and working in a rush but to cancel an appt not requested is a huge mistake that didn't work really come across as a genuine apology. It did really seem like a "it's your problem" Unfortunately not returning the online booking system needs to be updated to be more flexible and to adhere to their 24 he + cancellation. read more

Yosuke is amazing! I have been looking for a hair dresser in San Jose for a while now and wanted a quality hair cut since I haven't gone to a salon in years. First time getting a haircut at Aruka's. My hairstylist was Wataru. My boyfriend also got a haircut with Wataru. I showed him a picture of how I wanted my hair layered. He was super focused and cut my hair in detail. He also used a curling iron to wave my hair like in the picture while also teaching me how to do it the correct way. I loved the way it turned out! Got under lights and highlights corrected. Asako did a great job of giving me long layers and of dyeing my hair. The entire flow of the hairstyle is good and frames my face. I think I found my new favorite place. Due to COVID and my regular place (and basically everything) closed, I spent countless hours on Yelp and on the phone to find a place that is open. I managed to find Arukas near to my work place and made an appointment for Friday afternoon. They had some chairs outside and 1 client getting a haircut and another one getting his hair washed inside. I will not be lying, I was expecting to have my haircut outside as well, but that was not the case. I showed the hairdresser what I wanted and she was EXTREMELY friendly and knowledgeable. She understood exactly what I had in mind and was always asking me along the way if I am comfortable with the length or if she should go a bit shorter. She was not overbearing and she gave me a GREAT haircut. I will 100% come back again. I wish I could remember my stylist's name. Well, if I love it so much, you might wonder why not 5 starts. With COVID still pretty much a thing, the salon had absolutely no hand sanitizer at the register nor did they clean the chairs after each person. When I got in, a man was having his hair washed in one of the 4 chairs they had, when he was moved, I was put on the same chair. They did not clean it, nor did they opted for another empty chair. Similar thing happened with the main chair in front of the mirror. The only COVID-friendly thing they did, was wearing masks. Fairly disappointing in that part. read more

My first haircut here was February 2020 with Konami, who had helped reshape my flat shapeless lob. A gentle hair wizard, she cut life and bounce and shape into my hair which I thought was gone. While she no longer works at this location, my first experience at Arukas was a great one, and enough for me to return. COVID and constant tying having thrashed my split ends, I scheduled the second of my biannual haircuts with Rei. She was very sweet and attentive, not to mention stylish and cute! After asking what I wanted to do with my hair, we looked at some photos, she provided suggestions and asked more questions. All I knew was that I wanted it short, and she asked if I wanted to change up my style. I said yes, and the rest is history. It's been a month and I love my haircut more every day, something I didn't know was possible. I can't wait to visit again to see what Rei's magic hands can do (color? airwave? digital perm?); I trust her with my hair more than I trust myself at this point. It hasn't been this shapely or healthy in a very long time. The shop has two main rooms and is spacious, bright, and relaxing. I received my haircut in the smaller room by myself and it felt very safe and clean. Prior to sitting for my shampoo, Rei sprayed and wiped down the chair which was much appreciated. For a women's long to short haircut with shampoo, head massage, cut, and blow dry, and style, I found that the price was worth. The search is over. A friend recommended this place to me, and after seeing good reviews here and on other review sites, I booked an appt for balayage and haircut. I ended up tipping them a fair amount out of respect for their time, but I don't think I'll ever come back (if you're a staff reading this comment, I'm very bad at expressing negative reviews face-to-face, but I definitely cried about the "balayage"). The only positive thing was that this was the fastest coloring service I had ever experienced; I have past shoulder-length hair and was in and out of the salon within ~4 hours. The haircut was just ok; I think it might have been better if I had a style in mind and a picture to show. I thought the layer cut was a bit uneven on both side. The balayage was absolutely horrible...I showed the stylist a picture of what I wanted but got nothing like it in return. To be fair, what I wanted was closer to highlight than balayage according to the picture. However, I ended up getting a combination of these...with awkward blocks of lightened hair... I ended up going to another salon to fix this bad hair job the next day, and was told that I had hair breakage from a bad bleach job I've seen ok dye jobs from this salon on IG so I guess try it at your own risk...but I'll be mourning my $$ and bad decision for a while read more

I decided that I wanted to get bangs on a whim, but I was very paranoid about it not being cut the way I wanted. I didn't know any good hair salons in the bay and wanted my bangs to be the thin, wispy korean-style type, so I searched for Asian hair salons and found Aruka's Hair. I was still hesitant but from the limited number of pictures on their Yelp page, it seemed like their style was very Asian aka just the style I wanted, so I thought this might be the right choice. I came in around 6pm on a weekday with an appointment and there was only 1 other customer in the store. Konami was the one who cut my bangs and she was very kind, receptive of what I wanted, and did a wonderful job of cutting my bangs EXACTLY the way I wanted. She was also very gentle and made every cut with precision. It took about 10-15 mins for the cut + blow drying bangs + styling with a straightener. I was very happy with the result and it turned out to be only $12 for bangs only. Parking is not bad because there's a garage in the plaza where the store is. I made a last-minute appointment on their website and it was confirmed by text the day before my appointment. My stylist was Marsa. I showed her pictures on my phone. She copied them onto her phone and referred to them during the cutting process. There is somewhat of a language barrier but we got by through hand gestures and some English. Just don't expect it to be a chatty experience. In fact, with what appeared to be a full staff with customers, the salon is at times pretty quiet, aside from the jazz music playing in the background. The ambiance is basic but the staff is friendly and very appreciative of their clients. I was very satisfied with the haircut Marsa created for me. The cut also includes a shampoo and blow-dry. Loved my experience here at Arukas! I listened to the reviews on Yelp and requested Wataru and I'm so happy I did! I knew I wanted 前髪 again and Wataru delivered and then some! He was super nice and informative about everything I was concerned about. Due to covid I wasn't able to cut my hair and it grew out so long and dead that it was apparently weighing down my whole head and I thought I was losing hair but Wataru reassured me that I had a normal amount of hair! He also taught me how to curl my 前髪 correctly because 前髪 is so hard to maintain (for someone like me) and it was just super fun! The whole experience was great and I could tell he wanted the best for my hair and not a lot of people are so considerate like that! He helped me achieve my hair goals and more! When I expressed my concern about being unsure of the different types of perms, He took the time to fully answered all my questions and told me his professional opinion after accessing my hair. I think I finally found my go-to hair salon! Asako cut my hair and she is the sweetest. I was given hand sanitizer when I came in, and both the chair and the hair washing station chair were wiped down right before I sat down. I only needed a clean up (it had been over a year since my last haircut, and it's not like I'm going anywhere anytime soon, so nothing fancy needed), but Asako was knowledgeable and answered all my questions about airwave perm. So definitely getting that next time :) The mini head massage I got during the shampooing was also one of the best I've had, for sure. My hair feels so much better and healthier now. P.S. They even have clean pens for signing credit card receipts! One container for clean pens and one for used (so they can wipe them down before the next customer). I finally decided to share this hidden gem... it's quite hidden, in the same business center as Le Boulanger and Happy Lemon...hidden in the back. But this makes is quite peaceful to enter, with a chill vibe. Kaz was my stylist this time and he did a wonderful job. I got a cut and digital perm again at this salon. Showed him some photos, he went to work and I loved the results. He's very focused, yet always make sure I was comfortable in the chair and when hair washing. I always knew about this place because it was right next to Happy Lemon, and I worked nearby in the past. I finally got a cut here back in February when my friend gave me her appointment because she was afraid the language barrier would be an issue. I took a chance, and was very satisfied with the service and results. Due to quarantine and salons being closed up until recently, my hair had grown out of control and it was time for a long overdue haircut. This time I made an online appointment through the website 2 weeks in advance, and picked Kaz Asada who cut my hair previously as well. Social distancing and COVID-19 prevention protocols were enforced here, at least from what I experienced during my visit. There was an outdoor waiting area under a tent with chairs 6ft apart. Upon entering, each stylist station was 6ft apart and they wiped the chairs with alcohol prior to seating. The front desk (where you pay) also had a gigantic bottle of hand sanitizer as well as separate pen containers for "clean" and used pens. Kaz-san is friendly, polite, and even remembered me even though I've only been there once, 7 months ago! He asked permission to give a head massage during the hair wash, as well as whether I was fine with him using the hair straightener on my hair (for styling after the haircut). I brought my own picture of the hairstyle I wanted and provided some adjustment requests to the length/layering. He followed the picture and my requests very well. Throughout the haircut, he also confirmed the length several times. If you're looking to try this place, I recommend you booking with him! Some reviews commented on the limited English spoken by the stylists here, but I don't see it as an issue at all. I was able to communicate fine, and was satisfied with both of my haircuts. Bringing a picture of the style you want may help. Overall, I'm very satisfied and impressed with the level of quality and service at Aruka's Hair, and I will definitely be back. This place is a gem and I was hesitant to write a review in fear that it would get too popular. The hairstylists here really have a keen eye for detail and a very Asian aesthetic, which is exactly what I was looking for. Sometimes with Western salons, it can be hit or miss because they are less familiar with Asian faces and aesthetic which is why I specifically looked for a Japanese hair salon. I used to live in Japan and am so admirable of the inventive techniques and styles they have. Arukas did not disappoint. I did not have to explain much and my stylist knew (and achieved) exactly what I was looking for. He kept checking throughout the process to make sure everything was perfect and even. This hairstyle suits my face shape and has actually feminized my face (which is typically a bit longer and has sharper features). Another plus is the pricing.
