My husband read a news article about Asaditos Zulmyta and the background story of Illy, the woman who owns it. Of course he immediately reported about the new food target to his food geek wife as he often does with international food findings. I maintain a spreadsheet with 600 rows of Tucson food options and details, categorized to my liking, so it's big and rare satisfaction for him to find something I don't know about. I have eaten pupusas and Salvadorian food at other places and have made pupusas at home but the article intrigued me, especially because I liked the pupusas I have had in the DC area better than ones I have tried here in Tucson so far and was curious. As usual I was also excited for a spanish practice opportunity and the cultural aspect. Things got even more exciting when I realized they have clearly marked vegan and vegetarian pupusa options. They carry Vevan brand vegan cheese and have a few options for veggie pupusas with beans/ squash/ spinach/ Jalapeño. They are also flexible and made me one with Loroco (a Central American edible flower bud) and the vegan cheese. The pupusas come with Salvadorian tomato salsa and curtido -Salvadorian slaw. I will mention that it seems that they run out of items (Ithink they get a good amount of Doordash orders). They also sometimes don't have beans available that haven't been mixed already with dairy cheese so if you are set on a certain item I would contact them prior. They are very responsive on Instagram and Whatsapp though so one can always check in with them. I came on two different occasions. First on a weekday when a young women was working solo. I liked the pupusa dough, fluffy and soft yet crispy on the outside. I got the loroco and vegan cheese and wished there was more loroco in it. I didn't taste it enough here. The tomato salsa didn't seem like it was made from freshly grated tomatoes like I am used to and prefer and was more liquidy but the curtido slaw was really good. It was oniony and flavorful. They were out of the dairy free beans that day (only had vegetarian already mixed with dairy cheese) and I wanted to try it again on a day they have them. I honestly didn't really need the vegan cheese- I love pupusas just with beans too. The second time I came was Valentine's day and they were making heart shaped pupusas. They had the dairy free beans available and I ordered the bean and dairy free cheese pupusas but specified lighter on the cheese.This time the owner illy was here. She grew up in Juayúa and her mom Zulma makes some of the sauces she uses for grilled meats. A green one is vegan and she let me try some and I really loved it. Today's pupusa I think maybe was cooked longer and slower on lower heat because it felt slightly less fluffy but it was still good. This is a roadside style venue near a car wash place but they put up a tent cover, tables, heaters and some decor to make it feel homey. The food takes a little longer than I expected but I enjoyed sitting there and even meeting some interesting people. Since I make pupusas at home to my exact preference I am not their target client for regular visits but I could see myself swinging by once in a while for a quick pupusa and a Spanish chat. They seemed fairly flexible too in regard to preferences/ requests. For those with allergies and the like, the owner said they make their vegan labeled pupusas only on one side of the grill where they don't cook animal-derived ingredients. Not something I personally care about but just a note for those who do. For those who are looking for gluten free options: Pupusas are naturaly gluten free but they do serve bread products so I would check with them directly about cross- contamination. Great addition to Tucson's food-ing! My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! Food was great, had 2 pupusas. Best I have had since moving to AZ. Service was great. Next to a car wash but that doesn't take away from the food, service or location (they are moving about 5 miles north to 4004 N Stone in April 2026). This is worth a visit. It is authentic Salvadorean food. read more
