We were attending the Yelp Night At The Opera but we were there early so we decided to eat and since Asahi was near Neil Blaisdell Center we walked it instead of driving. It ended up being a good thing because parking was very limited outside. Before entering the restaurant I thought "ok maybe we should get our food to go because I don't think there's any sitting area" but I was wrong. When we got in there were dining tables but it was full. I never realized how busy it was. But we were assisted right away and had a table available for us. I noticed that even when it was busy the employees made the time to check if anyone was waiting in line and if there was the employees reassured them that they would get a table ready for them. For first timers we orders the Adobo Fried Rice and Combination Plate: Chicken Katsuya and Kalbi. Overall it was pretty good. The Adobo Fried Rice came out quick and the Combination plate took a little while. The facility wasn't the cleanest or the biggest but overall I believe that it's the service that out weighs the appearance of the facility. read more

This is a good local spot to go for some comfort food. The service is usually fast and the wait is very short or none at all. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are a nice size. I really like their homemade burger and their chicken katsu curry. Their Mac salad is really good too. They are known for their oxtail soup but I haven't tried it yet. Hands down still the best place for oxtail soup. Well... except my wife :) My dad used to take me to Kam Bowl ever since I was a kid. So when they moved to Ward and changed their name, I was really hopeful that the quality would remain the same. And for the most part it has. The soup has an amazing flavor. And don't forget the fried rice. I think they mince Portuguese sausage which gives it an deep rich flavor unlike any other fried rice I've had. Their burgers are also surprisingly good. I took a picture to add among the many pictures of Asahi's self proclaimed "famous" oxtail soup. I may post it but it would hardly be an advertisement as the portion was skimpy and the meat was very fatty. I added a lot of ginger, thankfully it was practically unlimited and the meat, admittedly was fall off the bones good. The broth was hot and redolent but with only a modest amount of Chinese parsley and onions. One star. The amount of soup was not at all huge as in some of the pictures I saw. And our table ordered 3 "big" bowls. It doesn't help that I make an OUTSTANDING pot of oxtail soup because I take the time to trim the fat off and add the shiitake mushrooms and mustard cabbage in at the last minute (neither of which are in Asahi's version.) I did get a peanut, yay. I'm sure they are flattered and tired of people taking pictures of their food but I did so not in a complimentary way. Fat, yellow fat clinging to the meat. A mouthful of fat on each bone. Yuck. I had to bite it off and spit it out. Happy doggy tonight. I'll upload that soon. Regarding the waitstaff: If I am waiting on a table that takes pictures of the food, I'd at least try to be upbeat, cheerful and helpful. I wouldn't be sullen, avoid answering direct questions and wait to be asked to refill empty water glasses. But I did tip a little over 20% because one waitress was pleasant and quick, the other didn't want to be there. The hairy, grouchy, tubby waitress (guess if she was the good or yucky waitress) when asked if the order of my fried rice had an egg on it (I was willing to pay more to have one) looked at me and said, "NO." Not a suggestion of how I could order to have eggs on it, nada. Just silence and she stared blankly at me. OK then, no egg. In her defense, she was kind of nice to a few other tables while we were there. The ones that knew how to order eggs on top of their fried rice. All told we ordered the oxtail soup which was a OK on the flavormeter, the fried rice which was OK but nothing special, the lup cheong fried rice which was OK, the kalbi which was OK only because it was grilled, the soft shelled crab salad which was quite good except the crab portions were from crabs a half dollar in size, aka "manini" portions. The romaine was crispy fresh though and the fish roe was salty and sweet and crunchy good. The watery, smooshy avocado seemed like an afterthought which should have been avoided. Added nothing to the dish at all. The dressing was vinegar, shoyu and oil which went well on my ginger and oxtail too. Because the salad was tart, fresh, bracing and acidic, it didn't need the "creaminess" or rather the insipid oiliness of the avos. Really, not a well thought out dish. Could have used some tomatoes, actually. We also had a hamburger steak and gravy which was OK and a hamburger on a bun, with french fries, and 3 sodas. The food was passable, moderately and fairly priced but the only outstanding item was the french fries. And I don't even like french fries. Pay $97.00+ for that meal again? Ahhh, ummm, nope. The clincher for me was that I think Asahi Grill is complacent with their reputation but didn't try hard to impress. Next time I'm really jonesing for some ox tail soup, I'll try Like Like or that bowling alley somewhere out West side. Some yelper compared this oxtail soup to the old Kam Bowl. Boy was I wrong. Tiny chunks of freezerburned ahi that smelled like fish. Some avo, some egg filler, and 7/8 rice. At 14 bucks that's some super expensive rice. Lucky my friend also got a chicken salad for someone else that never showed up so I actually had something to eat besides empty carbs flavored like rotten fish. Salad wasn't that great but at least it had some protein in there. My advice is if you are forced to go here order something burned to a cinder so that it's disinfected and unrecognizable. First ever visit. Expectations never really meet reality but that's okay at AG. I pictured a giant bowl of oxtail soup greatness. Quality over quantity I guess. I was satisfied with my portion of oxtail but a bit disappointed with the amount of rich, yummy broth. Any larger size, had they had one on the menu, would probably cost $20+, so I think I understand why they didnt have a bigger size. Omg! Adobo fried rice! Pork Adobo deliciousness fried rice with 2 eggs over easy! Supa Ono loa! And if you love Oxtail soup and ramen, like I do, their Oxtail Ramen hits the spot. Lighter broth than at other places but with a nice star anise flavor, lots of cilantro and green onion. Just enough Oxtail. Oxtail is fatty and rich so sometimes too much can be overwhelming and rich. Just the right balance. Lots of other local style noodle soups, Japanese style rice bowls and local food. A friend I was staying with on vacation took me here for something everyone has to try when they're in Hawaii: a Loco Moco. This is literally a hole in the wall place that I would have never known was there if I wasn't with my friend. It's all locals that go to it too, a sure sign of a good place. The Loco Moco did not disappoint either. I got the half portion size and it was still HUGE. Egg was cooked perfectly, gravy was amazing, and the patty? Mouth watering. So you might want to call ahead to see how busy they are, street parking is not much of an option. But it does have that old school feel to it since they have been around for sometime. They're known for their Oxtail soup and is my go to. My daughter always gets their fried rice, and my other half always gets their chop steak. Their fried rice & oxtail never disappoints. But their chop steak....it's good but their portion size is so little, my other half can eat, and their chop steak to him is like a appetizer. I always pass by but never got to eat here before. My room mate and I decided to stop by to grab a quick bite after work, since I hadn't eaten all day I was pretty excited. It's a pretty small restaurant located on ward, one where it's noticeable but still easy to pass by if your not paying attention. The waitress was nice and brought us water right away, and gave us some time to look at the menu. My room mate decided on the fried rice and I ordered the miso butterfish teishoku. It came with miso soup, tossed salad, mac salad, cold tofu, rice and pickled daikon. The wait was not too long at all which was surprising since I ordered fish. But I didn't complain. At first I was very excited to try this dish, and the first thing I took a bite of was my tofu since the miso soup that came out was waay too hot and needed to cool down. But I was very disappointed with the first bite. My tofu tasted sour. Then I tried my miso butterfish, honestly it was just okay to me I felt they drenched the butterfish too much in the miso and the fish had a weird texture to it. But it still tasted ok to eat since I was way too hungry to order something else. The other thing that I didn't like was the toss salad came plain and no one offered me any dressing. There was a bottle of what looked like vinegar soy sauce? I tried a little bit of it and it was okay tasting but would of appreciated if they asked or offered different dressings... despite my dissatisfaction with the food the service was very good because the waitresses were all really great at checking up on us, there was barely any wait times. Walked in and had to "wait to be seated" (per the sign at the entrance). Didnt wait at all, there was only 2 or 3 tables with customers on them. There was around 10 tables, give or take, so the place was decent in size. Place is older, typical "hole in the wall" or mom & pops type eatery. Sat down, looked at the menu which consisted of local & Asian foods. Price was average. I ordered the shrimp tempura teishoku, my husband ordered a small oxtail soup and reg kimchee fried rice, both my boys ordered ramen: 1 shoyu & 1 miso. Food came in a timely manner, almost all at the same time. But we soon realized that they forgot our kimchee fried rice, after a few water refills & checking on us. I asked and was told they didnt make it, so we just said no need make um. I enjoyed my 5 med sized shrimp tempera with 3-4 veg tempura, mac salad(not so good, bland) green salad, rice, miso soup, and pickled radish. My husband liked his soup very much that also came with rice. My older sign thought his shoyu ramen was good, but my younger son felt his miso ramen was lacking a bit (his words were soup was kinda watery). Our bill came out to approx $58 before tip. I've been told that this place was known for their oxtail soup and found the perfect opportunity to try it as the weather had been full of cold winds and rain. The restaurant itself has a very "homey" and "old" feeling to it so it is definitely a casual type of ambience. There wasn't a wait at all, even on a Saturday night at the peak dinner time rush. I saw a lot of people order either their oxtail soup or their fried rice so I'll have to come back for the fried rice. The servers were friendly but I think we were visited maybe once during our entire time. My boyfriend and I both ordered their oxtail soup which is about $16 a regular sized bowl. (Mini size is available). However, they seem to value quality over quantity because the portion size for the price seemed a little smaller than what I was hoping for. The upside to this though, was that the soup was DELICIOUS. It was warm and full of flavor and just had something "extra" that made it stand above other oxtail soups. I also really liked the freshly grated ginger which isn't like the typical store bought ones served at other restaurant. All the homemade aspects really contributed to making the dish as great as many people claim it is. I have also tried this place for breakfast and I would recommend it if you are looking for a casual place to eat! I am one of those people that finds a favorite dish at a place, then I end up getting the same thing all the time, even though I would want to try something different. At Asahi Grill, it is always the fried rice with egg. For the price, it is pretty tasty. Once in a while I'll also throw in a side of bacon or portuguese sausage when I'm in the mood (wait, who is never in the mood for bacon!) The downside is that there can be inconsistencies with the quality of the food, fried rice sometimes isn't as tasty, and bacon is a little underdone/soggy. But for the majority of the time, it comes out ok. I normally do take-out, so I call in the order, and it is ready pretty quickly (5-10 min). Calling it in also helps with the parking situation, since there are only a limited amount of stalls and most times I've gone on the weekend in the morning, the lot is full, so I double park, and run in and out of there quickly. I believe she only refilled my water at the end of our meal. Food: Of course, i have gotten the oxtail. Large...but not as big for almost $15. The broth had a similar flavor long time ago (with the help of my favorite ginger). The meat was fall off the bone, but there were so much fat on the meat chunks, i felt i was being scammed. The boyfriend got the chopped steak with fried rice and gyoza. Gyoza was eh, it reminded me of the frozen gyoza. And his entree was just okay. Not the best, but definitely not the worst. Good is ok. Oxtail soup is not too bad, not a lot of peanuts but a forest of parsley. A lot more oxtail meat in a small serving than I expected. Rice is old and tough, like grandma style after the whole day in the pot. One interesting note: the ginger in the jar on the table is chock full and so fresh you'll scald your nostrils just lifting the lid! +1 for quality. I'd take Aiea Bowls oxtail soup over this in a heartbeat. Service is still uneven and kind of disappointing. It's Saturday night, why wouldn't you have one of your better shifts working? Asahi grill has become a regular breakfast/ lunch spot for my wife and I because you know what you'll get and they are really consistent in the taste of their foods. There are quite a bit of favorites we have here and while the food is not fantastic it is good. Of course the oxtail soup is always a favorite and the daily specials are pretty good, but I think the fried rice is one of the best dishes served here. My wife had her favorite lup cheong fried rice with Portuguese sausage this time and it didn't disappoint. The sausage was perfectly browned and the dish came with 5 thick slices. I had the adobo fried rice with link sausage. The fried rice was just a tad mushy but the flavor was great. I like my fried rice on the dry and fluffy side but I would order this again.
