This is the ONLY place in Oxnard that sells almost everything you would need to make traditional Korean cuisine. They carry things from tteok (rice cakes), danmuji (pickled daikon radish), doraji (bellflower root), and much much more. I shop specifically for Korean foods here, but they do have Japanese products as well. I just found this jem, even though I've driven past a thousand times. The owners are so so so nice, helpful, and friendly. It's open 7 days a week until 7pm. I mean it's not H-mart, but it certainly does the job. Stop by if you are shopping for any Korean or Japanese products. Certainly saves a drive to Los Angeles. I will continue to shop here from now on. read more

Came in from out of town and found this store to attempt our first home sushi making night! Had a list of ingredients to find and one of the workers assisted in helping us find everything we need and also make great recommendations of products to buy to make our sushi the best! As a child, my Japanese mother frequently shopped at Asahi Market for the wonderful Japanese dishes she used to prepare. Now that the Japanese market in Ventura closed, I was hopeful I could find ingredients for these same dishes at this market. I was pleasantly surprised I could find many things and was so happy to find the noodles needed to make sukiyaki. I also saw they have quite a few Japanese items that I normally have to drive to Los Angeles for...yay!!! read more

This place is good for buying all of your Asian products. Good selection and prices. They also carry sashimi grade fish, but you have to order ahead of time to make sure you aren't left out. We just moved to Ventura and I thought I'd have to drive back to L.A. to find Japanese groceries. Delightfully surprised at what we found at Asahi. My favorite easy-cooking brown rice (Sukoyaka Genmai) all ingredients for Shabu shabu dinner, furikake, genmai tea, etc! Japanese snacks and treats for grandkids! When I was tasked with making three Korean dishes for a retreat, I was sure I'd have to make ingredient substitutions because I wouldn't be able to find some things. A friend suggested Asahi Market and they had EVERYTHING I needed. Wow, I was truly impressed. Store clerks were willing to help me find things I had trouble finding, and I DID have to ask where almost everything was. Some labels were in Korean only. Definitely will return!!! Yay. read more

Perfect location. Nice people working there.....however. Like other said, it is more pricey than hitting LA downtown for your items. But that being said, I spent well over 70.00 there, and over HALF the items were expired. And I don't mean expired by a few months, we are talking expired by about two or more years. I was very surprised. The items were canned, jarred and/or dried items - such as sauces, condiments, nori and other items. The thing is, we all know store owners are aware that there are expired items on the shelves, they are the ones purchasing, tracking and stocking the shelves. It is hard to get asian groceries in Oxnard! I usually have to go once a month to LA to pick up food. But this place has just the essentials to tide you over. Pretty much have all the essential stock or basic items to build upon a good variety of asian foods - Chinese, Japanese, Korean recipes. Reasonable prices. I live in camarillo and had trouble finding asian ingredients at my local stores I looked this place up on yelp and tracked it down, walking into the store i was instantly amazed by the selection, the ingredients look fresh the meats look delicious and the employees were super helpful. this place is a total diamond in the rough, if you love asian cooking or even love to try new things this is the place for you, really reasonably priced as well. The market is not fancy, but it is clean and the staff was very helpful. The nice lady working at the register went out of her way to help me find the Meiji Karl Cheese Curls that I cannot get where I live. Being able to bring the Meiji back to the midwest made my trip to Oxnard a complete success. read more

A good little Japanese market to go to if you're just picking up a few missing ingredients or some pre-packaged convenience food, not so much if you're shopping for a main course. I have stopped by this market twice and I like it very much. They have everything I need, and it's close by, because seriously I would hate to have to travel far to get a last minute time or any other of the products. The only downside is the area is kind of... Not so nice... And the store is kind of not so nice looking as well. Also they really don't have a lot of fresh food available (like fruits or vegetables), but they do have meats and lots of other products. So def a plus if you need some asian products, and they do have quite a variety. It's why I keep coming back :) read more

Stopped in at this market today on a whim and was really excited by the great selection! I was able to find a few staple ingredients as well as some yummy snacks. Best of all, they have quick cooking boba pearls and boba straws which I have had a very difficult time finding in stores (and they are priced well too at $2.99 a bag and $.99 for the bag of straws). This is the second review i make on yelp. Had to re download this app just top write this review. I've never been racially profiled until today, from the moment i walked in with my co worker this guy was already following us around when we had only gone for some noodles. We grabbed the noodles while he was watching us and proceeded to purchase them. When he charged us first of all there was a ridiculous 10 minimum bs rule so we grabbed some ice cream. Then the guy asked for an id to pay with a debit card.... the first time he's ever asked for one since I've been shopping here. When we explained to him that we had just came from work and didn't have it but knew our pin number that nobody else knew. My co worker only speaks Spanish so he tried to communicate to him in Spanish and rudely said I'm not Mexican i don't speak Spanish in this mean face. My co worker also tried to tell him he would come back with an id and the store guy said i don't like your kind I'm not selling you anything leave my store............ Last time i shop in this store and i hope many more give him reviews like this. read more

This is probably the only Japanese food market in Ventura County. They also sell Korean, Chinese and some Filipino foods. It's been there on the corner of 7th St. and Oxnard Blvd. for decades. The store is small, but packed with merchandise. Parking is good. If you need a particular item for a dish, you need it, and it beats driving to L.A. They sell many canned items, dried items, teas, frozen fish and snacks. Their fresh meat selection is limited. Lots of sauces, vinegars, and hot sauces. They sell the biggest variety of sake in Ventura County. The have sake from Japan, California and Hawaii. The also sell fresh asian produce, featuring nicely sized items. Prices aren't that bad. Many of the grocery items are considered specialty items and are usually shipped from the Los Angeles area. read more

I'm so glad Asahi Market is still around after all these years! I first became aware of the place back in 1977 and I only get over there once every two years or so, so it's great to know that they have a loyal following keeping them afloat. With giant grocery stores throughout Oxnard, now, it is very refreshing to see this small family-owned market still in operation. I went there today and I've never seen such an extensive variety of Asian sauces offered in a single market anywhere in Ventura County. Asahi Market is a very small corner market on the main drag through old downtown Oxnard where one might not always feel safe at night, so I would advise going in the daytime. Also, please don't expect a fancy store interior or high-end fixtures. It's not that at all. The place has a long history, however, and I'm grateful that they are still around. I usually buy mochi ice cream at Asahi Market but they were out of the red bean kind that I like best. If you want an Asian sauce, though, they are really stocked up at the moment. read more

this tiny little market is smack dab in the middle of downtown oxnard. its a small kinda dirty looking shop. but sadly this is the only semi-korean market in ventura county. they must know that because they are EXTREMELY overpriced. but beggars can't be choosers. oh how i miss zion in san diego. read more

Asahi market is a nice small japanese/Korean market in ventura county.... I think the only one. For how small the place is, they seem to cram a lot of stuff in there. We wanted to make Oden (a Japanese fish cake soup) and they had everything we needed. The korean couple that own it are very nice and seem to know everything they have in store. They usually always have the green tea kit Kat bars, and sometimes have other random flavors. I recommend this place for a quick fix on something you need, as it's obviously not as big as some other places in LA. read more

I really really like this market. It's small but I found all the things I was looking for to make miso and curry. They have allot of snacks which is awesome. I was hoping to find a store that was similar to 99 Ranch Market and Marukai in Gardena but I haven't yet. They don't have much produce which kinda bummed me out. The lady there was SUPER nice and took everything out of the basket for me when she rung me up. All in all I do really like this store and I will definitely take the trip if I need to stock up on my Asian ingredients. read more
