Luv this store!! I've been going there for years!! The owners recently renovated their store. They are the sweetest couple!!

Don't live in Oxnard but have passed by this market several times over the years without stopping by. Big mistake. There's a reason they've been around for as long as they have. Went in for the first time today and was amazed at the variety of items offered. They offer staples for preparing Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese cuisine as well as delicious snacks, drinks and desserts. Staff is so kind and helpful. Was carrying heavy bottle when cashier offered to hold item at register until I was done shopping. Needed help finding a particular item and another cashier led me to the item and explained the differences between the the particular items they had. I'm far from an expert in Asian cooking of any kind, but I feel a lot less intimidated knowing that there is such an awesome, expert, friendly store in the next city! read more

If you're looking for a quick place to pick up Asian staples, but don't want to drive all the way out to LA, this is place to go. It's a little mom-n-pop store that has been around for a while. The selection can be quite minimal, but they do pack a lot into their little store. Dry goods, snacks, beer, seafood, a little produce area, and Japanese mochi. read more

I love this place! They have so many delicious food items and the staff are always so pleasant and polite. I'm sad to see them closing due to a misinformed and ignorant customer. However, I want to thank them for remaining open as much as they have and serving their community. Small market but carry the best selection of Asian food/sauces/seasonings! My go to for job tears (Japanese barley), fried garlic, chili and garlic sauce, dried fungi and other fun goodies! Jenny is always so helpful, and I appreciate I can call her to check in on availability of my staple/hard to source Job's tears - the best grain of ever and so versatile! read more

This place is a Gem! My husband and I were looking for a spice that we needed for a Japanese dish we love. This adorable shop took us back to a time that we lived in Japan. Kind of scary looking from the outside because the windows are blocked with cardboard, but it's a cute little market that has a good variety of Japanese items. Most of those shopping there were older ladies that spoke Japanese with the owner(?)/cashier. It's small but is one of the few Asian markets around that I've seen with fresh noodles in the refrigerated section. I specifically went looking for a Menlo lumpia wrapper supplier closer to North Oxnard but they didn't have any. Good variety of ramen, though! read more

Great little one stop shop! Hidden gem for sure. Came by to pick up gas burners for Shabu Shabu and materials for gimbap. Owner was the absolute sweetest! I had pictures of what I wanted to cook and she helped me pick out all the ingredients. So many cute Asian things to choose from! Oxnard / Ventura have pretty good range of ethnic grocers ~ Indian, Viet, Thai [if not Chinese] and an Island Pacific supermarket ... I don't know how the independent family-owned shops like Asahi get by. Asahi is shoe-horned into a pretty tight space in what is nominally 'downtown' Oxnard, such as it is. Nonetheless, traffic not an issue & parking is easy. Yes, a wee bit higher prices than elsewhere but nowhere else has such nice range of quality Japanese & Korean foodstuffs, cooking utensils & interesting geegaws. If proprietors speak a lot of English they have yet to let it on to me, but nonetheless no trouble communicating. I like this place a lot. read more

Wow! I was blown away by the selection of goods - so many of my Japanese pantry staples and favorites, plus a great many other items. If I'd known, I would've put a cooler in my car so I could stock up on freezer & refrigerated goods as well. I've been to this market twice and each time the ladies (I believe Korean, but speak Japanese?) are VERY nice and accommodating. Once the lady even let my sister and I in early to shop (quarter to 9). They have plenty of stock on a lot of snacks and basic ingredients for Japanese and Korean dishes. I just wish they had more of a meat/pork/seafood selection. Looks like they have sushi grade seafood, but that's about it. I've made Ramen and planning on making katshu and curry from the ingredients I purchase at this store. It looks like this place has been around for a while as well, because the surrounding area is mostly Latino based, and this is one of the few Asian establishments. read more

Ok, funny this is in the middle of what seems like little Mexico. They have nothing else Asian around there and when I got out of the car a bunch of Mexicans across the street were just staring at me that made me a little nervous. Not to be racist or anything...just an observation. I have been shopping at many different Asian markets wherever I moved and it's usually located in a little run down part of the town but this is by far the worst in my experience. I wouldn't go at night... So, the store is very old, somewhat dirty (looking) and dingy. They did have pretty much everything to satisfy your every Japanese culinary needs. The frozen section is a little small and didn't have much choices as to frozen fish, shell fish, etc. but they had the basics. They are well stocked in a vast variety of shoyu (soy sauce) and all sorts of sauces. The dried ingredients includes seaweeds (wakame, konbu, and nori), shiitake mushrooms, katsuobushi (fish flake), noodles, soup bases, and spices. Another large section consists of the packaged snacks. There is a small section of fresh vegetables but they didn't have much left when I went. They also have some household goods and serving dishes, pots, and utensils, etc. I was happy to find natto, ajitsuke nori, katsuobushi, chinese hot paste, shichimi tougarashi (7 flavor chili spice), zasai, green onion (4 bunches for $1) and takuan today and it cost me less than $40.00. read more

A bit pricey but by virtue of being being the only decently stocked Asian market in Ventura County, I don't mind paying the premium. Its a much much easier drive then.. lets say, the closest Mitsuwa. Asahi Market is essentially a big fish in a small pond. Possibly a medium sized fish in a tiny tiny pond haha. The store is small but it has everything that I love from my childhood in Japan. I can get all the random snacks I ate growing up. Calbee potato chips... Check. Royal Milk Tea (in a Japanese can)... Check. Ridiculously smelling dried squid... Check. In addition, Asahi has more then just snacks. The range of items they sell is actually pretty large. It ranges from various fresh sea food such as octopus and salmon to different kinds of tea to kitchen, beauty, and other miscellaneous items. So if your ever in need of some sort of Japanese or Korean item, Asahi Market would be a good place to check before deciding on taking the long trek to LA. read more

This place had a variety of different noodles, sauces, snacks, ice cream etc. They also sell kitchen supplies and bowls to cook your stews in like traditional Korean places. First off, had this been any other major city, this review would be a completely different story, but since it's in Oxnard, I am ever so grateful for this store. I used to buy my ingredients for sushi @ the Fuwa market, but on my last visit, I noticed a significant increase in Filipino foods & a decrease in other Asian items. That particular time, I was looking for miso, udon noodles, & shimeji mushrooms. Nowhere to be found, so I was forced to venture into new territory, & so glad I did! I'd seen this store often on my drives, so I held my breath & drove over (Yes, I wanted those ingredients THAT badly! lol). They had everything I was looking for & more. The only minor problem was that they didn't have my mushrooms, so I ended up buying shiitake mushrooms instead. Not to brag, but my dish turned out delicious nonetheless. In addition to what I was looking for, I bought some rice paper (will attempt to make spring rolls in the near future) & even found my favorite green tea mochi ice cream, pleasant surprise =) I've been back several times & have had a consistently good experience. It has all the basic Asian cooking items, including items for Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, & Filipino dishes. Pretty well stocked. I give it such a high rating for its variety & friendly staff. The ladies that work there are very sweet. Most importantly, I thank this store for allowing me to expand my culinary world. Who knows how far I'd have to drive around to gather ingredients if it weren't for this place! read more

We hosted shabu-shabu dinner for the hubs birthday and realized last minute we didn't have any of the barbecue (dipping) sauce. They have it. Plus more asian goodies!! Sooo happy for this store. This market is so cool in that it is obviously a family run business. It is local and the owners are more than glad to help you with anything you need. I can't say enough good things about this small Korean market. They had the opportunity to get me to spend more money than I needed to to make a dish I was cooking, instead they guided me on cooking techniques and offered me other cheaper options for the same result. Love having a supplier of Japanese foods/ingredients in the area. They have all the basics and then some.

Around here, you can't be too picky about getting an asian grocer and for as long as Asahi has been standing, I'm pretty happy with it. I get most of my bento cooking supplies here, though they don't have every thing. Some things are pricey and others are fairly cheap, so you can expect to pair in between fair and slightly expensive. Though, with gas the way it is, it may be more worth it than going down to LA. If you need asian goods, this is probably the first place you want to look before expanding your search. read more

Good thing I noticed the expired date on the Korean sausage before I bought it. Unfortunately that's the only one they have. I just opened the brown rice I got this morning purchased last week, and it's stale apparently I didn't check the date before purchasing it, it has a date back in August, that expired 4 months ago. I would check the date on everything I buy from there, or I need to find another place to shop. read more

I have been shopping here for the past six months or so, and every time I go in, it just gets better and better. Thousands of specialty food items from all over Asia, especially Japan and Korea. Authentic stuff, no cheap American-made knock offs. Recently the owners installed fresh new hardwood flooring which gives the place a huge upgrade. Recently "rediscovered" this place and I'm so glad I did. My tastes have evolved since last time I was here, probably 20 years ago. I get my Ramen and Udon ingredients here now,and there are enough cool, strange things to add and experiment with to keep it fresh. Sauces, dry ingredients, tons of noodles, deep red Sushi grade Tuna and thinly sliced Sukiyaki style beef and pork for my soups and noodle dishes. They even sell seeds of various Asian veggies and greens (Thai basil.) As well as utensils necessary for authentic preparation. The owners are really sweet and are eager to help with suggestions on cooking techniques and ingredients. Seems I have to go there at least once a week now. Golden Chicken Inn across the street, Sabor and La Gloria a couple of blocks away insure I hit a couple of favorites while I'm in the neighborhood. read more

It's one of the few (only) asian markets in the area. The plus is that it has a lot of the Asian products that others places do not have, but it's kind of expensive (actually really expensive) compared to the likes of 99 Ranch, etc. But the owners are super nice and the availability of the products make it a plus if you can't make it out to LA. Had a craving to make mochi at home, so I gave Asahi Market a call and they confirmed they had what I needed. The outside of the building looks a bit tattered and worn, but don't be turned away. This store has tons of Asian groceries that you can't find anywhere else within a 40 minute drive. While prices may be cheaper at a large Asian store, there isn't any such store close by, so the prices here are more than justified when you take into account the price of gas to drive to a larger store. That being said, the prices here are fair and the service was friendly. I asked for different ingredients a few times and was personally walked by an employee to their various locations. Very helpful staff and good selection of staples, plus fresh vegetables! If you need fresh ramen noodles, come here (they sometimes run out so you might want to call first). They have so many sauces and snacks, too! I even got a little ceramic grinder for ginger and garlic in the shape of a blowfish (SO CUTE). Excellent for Chinese, Korean, and Japanese pantry items (probably good for Thai and Filipino, too, but I haven't explored cooking those cuisines much--yet). So grateful there's a place where I can get red bean ice cream, decaffeinated genmai cha, and decaffeinated sencha, too! read more
