For me, Asanebo was always associated with a premium sushi spot with exceptional food. About five years ago, I visited for the first time and sat at the sushi bar, where they prepared live langoustines tempura-style--the heads were still moving while we were eating the tails. It was impressive, unique, and incredibly delicious. After that experience, I remembered it as an outstanding restaurant and wanted to come back regularly. Last week , I decided to revisit and relive that experience. Unfortunately, I left deeply disappointed. The restaurant is still expensive, but the quality and taste are no longer what they used to be. We ordered a variety of sushi--overall, they were okay, but nothing that created a "wow" effect. The biggest letdown was the albacore with truffle. In all the sushi restaurants I've visited, I've never seen truffle presented like this. We waited quite a long time for the dish, and when it finally arrived, I honestly thought there had been a mistake and that it wasn't our order. I even asked the server to confirm, and they assured me it was correct. The dish cost $44, and it was absolutely not worth it. The truffle had no aroma or flavor--it looked more like some kind of brown substance, as if it had been sitting somewhere in the kitchen for months before being shaved onto the dish and served as "truffle." Very disappointing. I was really hoping to rediscover the place I once loved and return on a regular basis, but after this experience, I won't be coming back.

The service and food is always top-notch at Asanebo. Elisa G, The Award Winning Yelper, me, and a friend of ours shared about 10 various dishes. Our favorite was the kinmedai, melts in your mouth fish. We also shared the Asanebo sake, nodoguro, mirugai, tuna, uni, sweet shrimp, scallop yuzu, grilled asparagus, kurodai, tai, homemade oshinko, and brussel sprouts with scallops. Our server was excellent, Fo, and so was Manatoro.

Finally got to come back. Valet $10. Still one of the best options for Japanese food in LA. Very thought out dishes w great quality ingredients. Service was very solid. Server knew all the dishes and her suggestions were spot on. Took great care of us. We tried a few cold dishes, salad, some fried yamaimo. Then finished with some sushi. They have an awesome selection of fish you dont find at other sushi bars. Hyu san seasoned and crafted each piece meticulously. What a treat. The brown tea homemade icecream was insane. Thank you so much!

This is one of the absolute best and must-visit sushi restaurants in Los Angeles. I made an early reservation for Friday night at 5:30 but arrived around 5:15. I was the only diner for almost an hour but had the honor of sitting at the bar in front of Chef Tetsu's station and he is seriously one of the nicest, most humble, and most talented sushi chef's in Los Angeles, in California, in the USA, in the world. I kept ordering dish after dish, fish after fish, because each and every item put in front of me was so fresh, unique, flavorful, and delicious. Chef Tetsu is very welcoming and happy to talk about all things sushi, Japan, his restaurant, staff, and more. His staff too are all so incredibly kind and attentive. I loved all the nigiri, each one with a complex and unique flavor profile. My favorites were the golden baby snapper, zuke tuna, marinaded salmon. The miso black cod was so soft, umami filled and delicious. The truffle was outstanding. The spicy tuna crispy rice was perfect. The yaki toro was seriously butter. The scallops were incredible. The ono handroll was excellent. Everything was sublime. Worth every single penny and every single second at Asanebo. I can't recommend this place enough

Teetering between a 3 and a 4 star review. Honestly, I've pressed 3 stars and then 4 stars a number of times lol Customer service 4.5 stars Food 3.5 First time here. Came for our anniversary. I had certain expectations from everything I've heard and read about this sushi spot. Sometimes it will exceed or meet your expectations and sometimes it will not. For me and hubby this didn't quite meet my expectations. I feel really bad for saying that because the staff was so friendly and the customer service was really nice, but I have to be honest. We started with a glass Asanebo sake ($20). The server was kind enough to split it in half for us, which was a really good portion. It was a full sake glass for each of us. That was very nice and appreciated. We started with the spicy tuna crispy rice, and the popcorn shrimp. Both were pretty good. The popcorn shrimp was outstanding! Fresh and hot and light. I almost ordered another order lol. Spicy tuna crispy rice is something I always order everywhere. This was good, but not mind blowing. We ordered the miso black cod to share. That was good but again not mind blowing. I've had better. Next we ordered a handful of Nigiri and a spicy tuna cut roll and a Toro cut roll with pickled radish. Everything was OK. Nothing bad, but nothing wow. I really had high hopes for this place. Quality did not match the price point IMO. I would come back, but it won't be for a while. There are so many sushi spots in Los Angeles. Like I said, the customer service was great! Everyone was so sweet and attentive. They came out with a refreshing dessert for our anniversary, which was beautiful and yummy.

As someone who genuinely loves sushi and enjoys Japanese cuisine several times a week, I feel pretty confident in sharing my thoughts here. Unfortunately, from the underwhelming service to the quality of the food, this experience was disappointing. In my opinion, it barely earns a 3.5 and certainly doesn't deserve a spot on the Michelin guide. Throughout dinner, our server was noticeably dismissive--treating us differently than their regulars and, at one point, only addressing my husband. For a place aiming to be high-end, this kind of service felt tone-deaf and outdated. And let's talk about the food. For a $400 bill, the fish simply didn't deliver. None of it tasted particularly fresh or flavorful, and surprisingly, nothing was imported from Japan. The salmon was from Scotland, the uni from Santa Barbara. Now, I love good Santa Barbara uni, but this was priced as if it were Hokkaido's finest. They also insisted their nigiri didn't need soy sauce, but frankly, if every piece wasn't topped with some garnish or sauce, I don't think they would've had any flavor at all. Overall, it felt more like style over substance--and for that price point, I expect both.

Came here with a buddy after a Six Flags trip since it was on the way back home. Called to get a reservation same day and got seated at the sushi bar. We found street parking not too far but the area can be a little tricky. The sushi bar sits about 8 ppl and they also had some tables as well. I always choose the bar if I can cuz I love interacting with the chefs. We both opted for their sushi omakase course and it did not disappoint!! The best experience was probably with the sushi chefs and manager. They were absolute hoots and were just an absolute great time. The sushi itself was also to die for. I loved the sea bass miso soup, the fish was buttery and melted in my mouth. I pretty much loved all the nigiri except for the mackerel which isn't general is not really my favorite. They were all seasoned perfectly with really great accoutrements that paired well with each fish. We even got some dessert and the staff was nice enough to include samplers of all their different handmade ice creams when we couldn't decide which kind to get. And it was all delicious. I honestly cannot wait to come back again, I would rank this top 3 of sushi places I've been to when you contemplate the quality, price, and service/experience. Loved it and honestly can't wait to come back again.

Best sushi experience of my life!!. Got the 2nd tier omakase ($180 pp) and worth every single penny. The quality of the ingredients is second to none. You can taste the freshness! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Highly recommend sitting at the bar.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Chef Hiro was awesome!

This place sucks so bad. Had my birthday dinner here and it will be a birthday I won't forget in the worst possible way. Actually even got sick later while I was sleeping and had to rush to the bathroom. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Horrible vibes in a tight area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The Japanese servers are rude and the food for what it was really did not taste good and was extremely overpriced. Crazy how this place has a following but I guess they've never experienced good sushi.

we had a reservation for this place and it was absolutely 10/10! the service was top tier and we had our own little cubicle of where we ate so it felt like almost private. me and my partner were struggling with our fussy baby and the waiters/waitresses made us feel so comfortable telling us it was okay and not to stress or worry about the baby crying. i really appreciated it and made the experience even better. the food was amazing and definitely worth the price! loved the halibut appetizer !!

The food was absolutely fantastic. Every single piece in the $140 omakase was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. We also ordered the wagyu, which was rich and perfectly done. I left completely full and satisfied. No complaints about the quality or taste of the food. But for a group of five with drinks, the total came out to around $1300. At that price, I expected more than just great sushi, I expected a full experience. Instead, the whole thing felt rushed. All 14 pieces were served in groups of seven at a time. Not a single piece was presented on its own. There was little to no explanation of what we were eating, and that took away from the depth and intimacy an omakase experience is supposed to offer. Also, they were pretty insistent about not using soy sauce, which felt unnecessary. If I want to use soy sauce, I should be able to. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's one of those small things that adds to the overall vibe. So while the food was top notch, the pacing and lack of attention to detail in the presentation really held it back. I might recommend it for the flavors alone, but if you're looking for a slow, memorable omakase experience, this one doesn't quite deliver.

How much is omakase lately? I know the prices have changed since the last pic uploaded into yelp of the menu.

    160. Not worth it. They rush you like it's fast food.

    Are there any Vegan options?

Yes. They have a veggie roll and they have various appetizers that are vegan. The Himachi Tomato is vegan. Also, Mushroom Risotto and various grilled vegetables. Basically, you can make it work.

How many pieces are in the omakase A?

    12...

How much is an omasake? We're planning on going in lunch time. Will you be full afterwards?

Omakase A is $95.. Omakase B is $145ish. OR you can just do straight Omakase. however many fish you'd like. I had 12 pieces and it was $85.

I wonder how to make reservations if they don't have an answering machine?

A line of happy sushi chefs greet customers coming and going in the front. its funny since from the outside, the restaurant looks so unassuming from the street level. The food was excellent and I give 5-stars for the hot entrees like chicken teriyaki (5 stars) and the miso black cod appetizer (4 stars). Wife felt the miso was a bit too heavily sauced but I liked the rich flavors. We replaced the default rice with sushi rice and the sticky texture and vinegary flavor was well worth it. The Brussels sprouts and mushroom appetizer was also full of umami (4 stars). I got their nigiri combo with spicy tuna roll. Very good with fresh fish toppings (4 stars). I did not see an omakase option on the menu, but maybe that's off menu when price is not an issue. Went around a couple times and finally found something. Everything we ordered was delicious. Food came out promptly and the staff was very friendly. They have indoor and outdoor seating and prices were reasonable. Menu has a lot of which is kinda overwhelming.

The standout for me was the hamachi sashimi--it was unbelievably soft, buttery, and literally melted in my mouth. The service was outstanding from start to finish. It was my husband's and my first time there, and everything was delicious. The staff, servers, and chefs were so friendly and fun. I especially loved seeing how they interacted with their regulars -- they even knew them by name. Overall, it felt so welcoming and was a great experience. We will definitely be returning!

Everyone was friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout the meal. The food was good, but I don't think it justifies the $54 per person price. They had a nice selection of appetizers, and I especially enjoyed the gyoza and the spicy tuna on crispy rice. I wasn't a fan of the calamari, though. It was heavily breaded, and I would have preferred more calamari and less coating. The creamy rock shrimp was also a bit too sweet for my taste. I also didn't care for the cucumber salad. Whatever sauce they used just didn't pair well with the cucumber. Most disappointing, for $54/person they should offer carpaccio. Not worth the price for sure. The sushi rolls were just okay. There weren't as many different options as I expected, and a lot of the rolls were very similar with only small variations. They also used quite a bit of rice, which made some of the rolls feel filling without adding much variety. One thing I did like was that most of the specialty rolls came with only four pieces instead of the usual six or eight. That made it easier to try more items without getting full too quickly. Overall, the fish tasted fresh, but the rolls were pretty average. For the price, I don't think I'd come back. I'd rather go to Zeppin Sushi in Encino, where I think you get more value for your money. That said, the staff was wonderful, and they definitely made the experience enjoyable.
