We had three or four companies inspect our fireplaces and they diagnosed many different problems and offered to fix them for between $5,000 and $12,000. Ross from Ashwipe came and fixed one problem for free on the spot, explained how we could fix another ourselves for about $30, and said there weren't any other problems. On our home inspection the inspector said we might need a new chimney liner. I read plenty of stories online of less reputable companies doing an inspection and then charging thousands of dollars to install a chimney liner you don't need. Ross from Ash Wipes isn't like them. He is friendly, on time, and most importantly honest. My first experience with Ash Wipe was when I needed a chimney cleaning in my new condo. Everything seemed to go okay so this year when I wanted my dryer vents cleaned I called Ash Wipe for the job. This second experience was not as good. I expected the tech to clean the vent where the lint trap is. The tech said that they don't do that but I could get a brush that would remove the lint. The tech also told me that my dryer vent wasn't connected above the ceiling and he suggested that I call a repair man. Today I had the repairman out. It cost me $95 to basically learn that the guy from Ash Wipe who did the dryer vent cleaning doesn't know what he is doing. The repair guy went into my attic and couldn't find a thing wrong and he even removed some lint that Ash Wipe's service didn't get too. I might call Ash Wipe the next time I need my chimney cleaned but I definitely won't be calling them to do other services. read more

Hired for routine cleaning and inspection; Very efficient, and they noticed that the way our damper lever was mounted was wrong, so that it was at risk of slamming shut -- something that had in fact happened once, and required some scrambling to re-open as smoke came into the house! They found it to be a mistake of the builder -- they had mounted the metal slot that the lever passes through upside-down, so the teeth could not grab properly. Ash Wipe fixed it for free. Ross is such a refreshing breeze in this business world! We consider ourselves extremely lucky to be referred to him by our real estate agent, Andra O'Neil, when we needed a second opinion about our chimney during the process of inspection for sale of our house. The buyer brought in a local chimney company with a free inspection for them. The estimation from this inspection costed $12k+, which included the stainless steel lining for the flues from top to bottom(for our 2 story house) with limited life time warranty and all kinds of repair work. Ross came to examine and patiently explained to me what that inspection report was referring to. And his conclusion was "all good, except need to apply some silicone seal to a minor line of crack of the crown plus routine cleaning" which costed $175. He also graciously offered to answer any question the buyers may have. We need more people like Ross-honest, with integrity! We can't thank him enough! I have not yet had Ross for chimney service but did schedule an appointment with him for chimney inspection and installation of chimney caps. The reason I'm posting this review is that he very much impressed me when I spoke to him on the phone and I already wanted to rate his CUSTOMER SERVICE AS EXCELLENT. I had the impression that I'm dealing with an honest and humble person who isn't interested in gouging for money. He even offered to look at photos made during a prior inspection of our fireplace which yielded a hair-raising repair estimate. Ross cautioned me to be weary of any such "fix" and said that he will stop by to check the fireplace himself. And once I emailed him the photo, he responded promptly and said it wouldn't be a big fix. This, versus the aforementioned estimate from another place ! He was booked two weeks in advance and was honest about having to charge me a nominal fee for coming out. Which is fair - it makes sense. When someone offers a "free inspection" and then overcharges for repairs, it ends up costing you in the end. read more

Would recommend. As first time using this type of service, I searched the net and found positive Yelp reviews for Ash Wipe. I called and left a vm and Ross, the owner, called back within a day and filled me in on services available and costs. We set up an appt for two weeks out on a Saturday. In the meantime, I also called two other places and one was twice as much and I never heard back from the other. Ross/Ash Wipe showed up on time and was courteous and efficient. Although he comes equipped with ladders, a truck, and presumably other equipment if needed, he brought in his vacumn and supplies and cleaned from the fireplace hearth. He put down a drop-cloth first. Using the vacumn and extension brushes, he did a quick and efficient scrub of the chimney. He did a visual inspection of the roof and chimney cap from the ground with binoculars. He did not see any signs of issues so did not go up on the roof. I got to talking with him about his sign on Milwaukee Ave that has been there for many years as well as some of the other chimney sweeps I had talked to or left messages. He commented that there are a few unsavory people out there and they overcharge people by scaring them into services they don't need. After talking with Ross, it was my impression that he is genuine and straight-forward and offers his service at a fair price. I paid $135 for a basic cleaning.
