Met my daughter here for lunch yesterday and loved all the food. We chose Ashoka because we were hoping they had a lunch buffet. Unfortunately,they shut down their lunch buffet during COVID and never brought it back. All the food at the other tables looked good so we decided to give it a try à la carte. We ordered chicken tikka masala, chicken vindaloo, and tandoori chicken. Since à la cart we als ordered two rice and one garlic naan to go with the curries. Serving sizes were good - not small at all but not huge either. Service was very friendly and consistent.. Tikka masala was thick and flavorful. Over the basmati rice was a perfect bite. Vindaloo was also juicy but felt that the sauce could have been a little thicker. Had also asked for super spicy vindaloo but it didn't feel that hot (but did make me sweat like crazy!). Tandoori was tasty but could have been juicier. Felt like it was precooked and warmed up versus being cooked fresh. The tandoori was a till very tasty though. Cost was a little on the high side since everything is à la carte (rice and naan extra). Three dishes, two rice and a garlic naan came out to $74 with leftovers. Lunch would have been $20-25 each if we only got two dishes instead of three. Overall we plan to return and try other menu items. The friendliness of the staff (I think she was the owner) alone would make us come back, but the food was yummy too! In fact, I think we will door dash some Ashoka for poker tonight! read more

This casual spot has a bit nicer atmosphere and ambiance compared to other similar strip mall spots. It's not a bad choice for a casual group dinner. It seems to be family owned and service was very cordial and friendly. They were definitely a bit busy so it took a while to get attended. Food was average. We tried the chicken tandoori, the samosas, veggie korma, and lamb curry plus a bread basket. All were fine but nothing stood out. read more

Ashoka is such a hidden gem. This family owned Indian spot has been around since 2012 and the moment you walk in, it genuinely feels like home. We tried the samosa chaat, butter chicken with the Ashoka bread basket, tandoori chicken, and onion pakora, and everything was so fresh and flavorful. You can really tell the food is made with care. The naan was amazing and the butter chicken was hands down my favorite. Every dish was comforting, rich, and perfectly spiced. Nothing felt rushed or generic, just really good Punjabi-style food done right. On top of that, the service was so kind and welcoming, which made the experience even better. The food is absolutely delicious! It was our first time and we will be back! We had the chicken and fish pakora to start. Both amazing! We had the assorted vegetable pakora too. It was fresh and tasty with the dipping sauces. We also had tandoori chicken, butter chicken, tandoori kabob, korma chicken, plain naan and garlic naan. Each dish was great! Ordered butter chicken and naan today. Both naan and the chicken had human hair in it. When I called them to let them know, the owner refused to accept that we had hair. His response was , it can't happen but if you come back I can give a new one. Why would I order food again from the place which had hair in their dishes. So disappointing. Lunchtime crowds at Subway and McDonald's in this plaza can make parking a challenge, but the food at Ashoka is definitely worth navigating the tiny lot for. I had a craving for Indian food so I decided to check out this spot in Pleasanton off of Stanley blvd and Bernal Ave. When I walked in, there was one person waiting for an order. I think the owner was in the back getting food. She then came out and asked what I wanted to order. I told her I'd be dining in so she grabbed a plate and utensils and gave me a menu. I was the only one dining at the time but later on more people came in. It looks like they had their regulars who would order for pickup and I think that's always a good sign. I ordered what I usually get at any Indian restaurant which is chicken tikka masala, naan and rice. She suggested the samosas so I had to order it. These did not disappoint! There were hot, flakey crust and inside was so flavorful of spices, veggies, potatoes and lentils. They paired very well with the sauces which were mint and a tamarind sauce. She suggested to mix them together and wow I loved it! Next came my main. They give good portions as I could not finish it all. It was your typical chicken tikka masala, I appreciated a little sweetness to it and of course the rice and naan complimented it just fine. I was plenty full to finish so I ended up having leftovers. I will definitely come back as the service was excellent, she is super nice and food came out pretty fast considering they had lots of to go orders. Total ~ $24 + tip This felt a little pricy for me as my usual spots are not ala cart for what seems like regular size portions. For and other places I've ordered chicken tikka at include rice with it. Again every place is different I was just happy to try a new spot as I love Indian food. I came in ordered my food and then took a seat. I thought it was strange I wasn't offered water and figured I would ask when the food came. My food came packaged to go, I was a bit disappointed granted I live about $40 minutes away. I said "oh it's packed to go?" The guy stated "Did you want to eat here?" I felt a bit embarrassed and slightly sad as I thought it was common knowledge people normally get the food to dine in unless they request it to go. Anyways I say it's ok I'll just eat in the car, although I didn't really want to but was still a bit embarrassed. He was nice and offered me utensils and a to go foam plate. I asked about sauces and he brought me 2 in the tiny to go sauce containers. Chicken Tikka: I asked for it to be Medium to Spicy and he said so Mild to Medium. I said " No Medium to Spicy." I received a Mild Chicken Tikka. The flavor was alright but I was a bit disappointed as I love spicy food and the tiny extra sauce he gave me was not enough. Rice & Garlic Naan: The were good no complaints. Mango Lassi: I was sadly disappointed as the Mango Lassi felt so liquidy and runny. I was very watery and I was hoping for a slightly thicker consistency. Over all I don't think I will be back. It wasn't bad but there wasn't anything great or amazing either. I'm pretty picky when it comes to curry, having lived in and visited places where there has been access to really good curry restaurants. Since moving to Pleasanton, we've been hard pressed to find a place that provides such flavorful curries, until now. My husband got the lamb, and we both ordered our curries med-hot spicy. We like things spicy, and most places don't take us seriously when we say we want it as spicy as we do, which is usually a 7/10 or 8/10 level of spiciness. Anyway, they hit the level of spice just right for me, but my husband felt the burn, but in a good way. We ordered the bread basket, which was a nice variety of naan. I'm Asian, so the portion of rice was a little small for me. The owner seemed very nice, and we will definitely be back. read more

This is the best Indian food restaurant in all of the east bay. Fremont restaurants are terrible so I decided to try this one in Pleasanton and was amazed by the incredible chicken tikka masala. Gobi Manchurian made or topped in Tomato ketchup!!! Never had this anywhere and never going back to this place ever again. It's a small place with 4-5 tables. Great location. We were a big group gone for lunch here. We ordered gobi manchurian , pakodas and a few other appetizers. All were a big turn off! For the main course we ordered - Paneer kadai , malai kofta , bangan bharta , goat biryani and dal tadka. The only things good were the malai kofta, bangan bharta and dal. Portions/Quantity of each were also on the lesser side. Service/ Staff - was great. One lady managing everything. Overall, was disappointed especially based on all the appetizers, with the tomato ketchup based Gobi Manchurian still topping the list. read more

Will post once we've tried the food. It smells amazing as it cooking. We took our normal order to guage how they compare to our previous local Indian food. We ordered medium spice for our taste. We showed up within a few minutes when they opened. So the service was good. I did notice that today I was the 6th order and it's only 5:20 pm. All the others were Grubhub or DoorDash. We took ours to go and as I drove home I was having smell anticipation. I took a picture of all of the food we had ordered. I was very happy with the value of our food. Both the butter chicken and pawn vindaloo were on point. The tandoori chicken was full of flavor and moist. We will be coming back again to try some our other favorites.
