For 11 years, Asia Express was my go-to Chinese food spot, particularly because it was conveniently located near my apartment and it's more like a mom and pop shop. You can get the lunch special for just a little over $5 bucks, which is white rice and any choice of entree ($1 extra for honey walnut prawns). My only gripe is that sometimes I'll get more rice than the actual entree, but I can't complain. Most of their staff have been there for a long time and are very friendly. Ladies at counter are nice, and the place is clean. This is my third time trying the orange chicken and it gets nastier each time, either it is over cooked or just old, it taste dry and hard. It's very nostalgic to eat at this place. I remember eating here when I was a kid in the 90's. I was craving express Chinese food (that wasn't Panda) and I remembered this place! I went a little crazy and bought 1 large chow mein, 1 large orange chicken, 1 large sweet and sour pork, 2 orders of hot and sour soup, 1 medium special spicy chicken, 1 large broccoli and beef, 7 egg rolls, and 1 large steamed rice. I went after the lunch rush so the food in the display looked half full. They asked if I could wait so that they could cook fresh orders and so of course I said yes! I waited only 10 minutes and it was definitely worth waiting. They put all my take out boxes into a box that was easy to carry to my car. I know this place is older than other restaurants but attention to cleanliness might spruce up the place. There's a lot of dust behind the POS cash register and considering it's a food service environment, things like dust shouldn't be allowed to accumulate. I'll be back though! read more

As previous reviews suggest. I've been a loyal customer for years despite the low quality food and raised prices. I still continued to support the restaurant that has kept me fed throughout my years growing up till now. But as of Friday 9/30/2022 I refuse to support this place anymore. That Friday I ordered as usual and they had a new lady who doesn't know my order. That's fine, but i usually get a large ice water which is the same water they give you in the small cup, I just pay extra for the large cup. Now for years it's been always 50 cents for the cup. And I told that to the new lady. She then double checked with the people in the kitchen and one of the other lady's comes out and tells me it's $1. I had told her it's always been 50 cents, she then tells me she has always been charging me $1 for the large water and it's been that way for years. That's what set me off. I've been coming around this place longer then she's been working here and she stood there lying to me telling me it's been $1 for years. Now I understand if they recently changed the prices (which they recently did in this past year for the food) but don't stand there and lie to me and say it's been that way for "years" when it definitely hasn't. She then offers me a "discount" for the 50 cent price, but told me that next time it's gonna be a dollar. I then was talking to my friend out loud about the price and the fact that it's just sink water they serve to me (which by the way, whenever they have a rude customer, they always talk crap in their language after they serve them, I've seen it for years (no seriously). Anyways I was talking to my friend and the new lady starts jumping into my conversation, and I go a bit back and forth with her. And from there I was gonna drop it. But these 2 older guys behind us ordering food who don't know that I'm a repeat customer and don't know what kind of BS there pulling on me says out loud "charge me the dollar, I don't care" basically taking their side. I then left and was yelling back at them. But left my friend inside, he told me the lady's threatened to ban us from the restaurant after that. And what I have to say about that is go ahead, they're the ones that are gonna hurt from us not coming there anymore. You think normal people would go to your restaurant more then once? I can't tell y'all how many times there's been hair in my food, but I just picked it out and continued to eat with no complaints, how many times the food was cold, but still ate it with no complaints. Even how many times I saw "black stuff " floating in the ice water they gave me (which is why I finally said something when they said there charging me $1 for it and I'm the bad guy) until now, never said anything. So Asia Express it was a good 15 year run, but I refuse to support and to spend another penny at your place anymore because of how the way you treated me....a loyal customer. By the way the water they serve you is water from the sink that's there. I saw the lady one time fill the pitcher up with water from the sink. Yep I've been drinking sink water and never complained either. I've seen it all from this place.... So please don't eat here. This place has declined so so much. I used to love coming here. Food used to be fresh. Service used to be good. I came in today and witnessed one of the ladies scooping food walk over to the cash register, empty the tip jar, count the tip jar, and then walk back over and start serving food again. I said, "Excuse me, why are you using the same gloves to scoop the food as you did to handle the money?" The lady serving food next to her says, "Oh, she's not touching the food." I said, "But she's touching the utensils that are touching the food!" I go here about once or twice a month, depending on how I feel. I almost always get a cup of hot and sour soup to go with my meal.. My normals are the pork chow mein, with any of the following: green beans with shrimp, beef and broccoli, orange chicken, sweet and sour pork. I've been working in Union City for a little over three years now...which is just long enough to make some sick of eating at the same chain locations. And when is comes to chain eateries, Union City is so saturated that it's oozing at the seams. In an effort to expand my lunchtime palette, I have tried a number of small independent restaurants, and Asia Express is one of them. I've dined at this location a total of five times, so I feel qualified to write a review of this establishment. My first two times going here, I thought I had found my new favorite chinese restaurant. They have cheap prices, a friendly service staff (always the same two ladies), and good variety of choices. Yet, the last three times that I've gone here, the place appears to be going downhill. The chow mein is extremely now, the bbq pork is way to fatty, and shumai is hard and barely edible. I almost feel bad for writing a non-favorable review of this place because they are always so nice to me when I go there. However, I have noticed that attendance at this location has dropped significantly. The last time I stopped by here for lunch, I was the only customer in the place, and after 30 minutes, it appeared that I would be the only customer. If I hear through the grapevine that this spot has improved their food, I might check them out again. But for now, I'm crossing this place off my list. read more

I usually get it with orange chicken and broccoli beef. The orange chicken is flavorful but not super tangy, a lot milder than Panda Express fare. The broccoli is occasionally overcooked but that's OK. Downside to this place: they can't really speak English very well, but they try their best. What can I say about Asia Express... I've been coming to this place for years. When I need a quick Chinese Food Fix, this is where I go to because it's on my home and only about 5 minutes from there. I've been seeing the same 2-3 women working behind the counter for years and you still have the same Chef working the same wok for years. It's like this Chinese Resturant is located in a time dimensional rift where the only thing that changes is their price. But lets just talk about the food. It's better than Panda Express but by far not the best Chinese Place I've been too. They've been offering the same options since I first found them. They offer all of your regular Fast Food Chinese Options so don't be expecting any specials. Usually they have both a Chicken and BBQ Fried Rice and Chow Main option and then about 8-10 food options. Over the years I've tried all of their options and have settled on the BBQ Pork and the Lemon Chicken. The only thing worth noting is the Lemon Chicken and the sauce. But even that is about average. Prices here are about average, you can get a 3 item combo for about $5. So if you're looking something that is a quick fix to your Chinese Food urges, this is a good place to come to. I've been to this place maybe 2-3 times with one of my friends... she loves the place, I don't. The ladies that work there are very nice, but the food isn't that great. Everything is deep fried and then covered in some sort of glaze sauce, the chow mein is super oily, egg rolls were cold like they've been sitting, and the fried rice is blah. I'm also not really a fan of eating food that been sitting in a metal tray over a hot water bath either... My first love... During my 1st job at the now closed Fashion Tune (clothing store) on Decoto, I was introduced to this yummy restaurant by my co-worker. Sure, as a 17-year-old, the greasy food was perfect in any teen's diet, but this local place never let me down as far as taste and budget. Now 10 years later, and I still manage to come back... Lemme tell you about what made me swoon.... 1. Pork fried rice: Sweet, salty, spicy...all the tastes minus bitter. Perfectly blended with green onions and egg! 2. Spare ribs in black bean sauce: Tender ribs, delicious by itself, even better when poured over white rice. 3. Lemon Chicken with Garlic Sauce: Crispy chicken but I love it with the sweet garlic sauce (no the lemon one). They also have Garlic Chicken, but the Lemon ones come without bones. 4. Also, being located next to a dollar store does not bode well for the place either. So, I hesitantly walked in, thinking that I will check out their steam tables to see if the food looks all right. I was pleased with what they had to order, so I picked my selections for two 3-item combo ($4.79). It should be noted that fried rice or chow mein counts as one of your items. I tried to include a number of different selections, including pork fried rice, chow mein, orange chicken, mushroom chicken, shrimp with green beans and special chicken wings. They were mostly pretty good. I liked that the chow mein tasted very good and is chewy. The mushroom chicken even had black mushrooms. The special chicken wings were a bit too saucy and since the wings were chopped in half, the bones sometimes mix in with the meat. We paid and took our food home. 10 min later as we started taking our first bites we realized how terrible the food is. Bland, old, oilily. Sadly all I could eat was the egg roll and a few bites of orange chicken. Upon my first bite of chow mein and rice I spit out the food. I couldn't tolerate the taste plastic like. I used to go to this place every week when I went to Logan. It was our favorite spot. They gave you lots of food, it's inexpensive and the food is hella good. So yes, it's not the most fabulous chinese joints but it's a good hole in the wall. I moved back home and I'll come by every so often. I always get the same thing...the "asia express" - fried rice, chow mein, side dish and egg rolls. My favorite is the shrimp string bean and their house hot sauce is the bomb. They give you so much food that I always have left overs. Oh i gotta mention that their won ton soup is under $3! What a deal. And it's yummy! It's been over 10 years and they've never changed. This place is really small kind of dark and certainly looks a little dirty but the food they have is super super super yummy. They serve the food just like at panda express except it is so much better and they totally have the best potstickers I've ever had. Probably my favorite Asian take out place. They make the wontons for soup early in the morning and you can see them make it sometimes. I am all about fresh food so seeing someone make it at a table doesn't bother me in fact it makes me feel good that its not just coming from a bag somewhere. They occasionally give out extra egg rolls or other appetizers when you order around $20 with or without the coupon. Pork Fried Rice - Generally very good. Sometimes it does sit out but it's generally not the case. This moves pretty fast and gets changed out so the rice isn't stale 95% of the time. Pork Chow Mein - Very good, not packed with onions like some places (99 Ranch comes to mind) to fluff it up. BBQ Pork - Some are a bit fattier than I prefer but they have lean pieces too and its complete pieces so you can pick which you want them to cut up. Broccoli Beef - Nice amount of sauce. The broccoli is cooked but not limp. The beef isn't super tender and sometimes gets stringy; average beef quality. I'd say its around par take out quality. Mushroom Chicken - Above average, not stellar but definitely memorable. The chicken is cooked well (not dry) and the mushrooms are soft. String beans with Shrimp - decent amount of shrimp and the string beans are cooked well with a nice sauce. Probably my favorite dish, other places seem to have over cooked green beans so they get mushy, this place doesn't have that problem. Fried Fish - Good. The fillets are cooked well but seems a bit dry sometimes, better than oily though which is why I get it here versus other places. I'd much rather have a little dry occasionally than oily, usually. They have other dishes but those are the ones I generally get. The only bad thing I will say about this place is the food doesn't keep well. I would say eat it while its hot because its definitely not one of those Asian places that still taste good cold, nor does it hold in the fridge for days like super processed take out.
