One of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the Bay. Authentic, hot Hunan food. Servers are usually quick and always double check with us the spice levels after ordering. I would not come here if you can't handle spice because it is SPICY. I personally love numbing, tingly foods so I will always order with extra numbing oil. My favorite dishes are the grilled intestines, grilled spicy fish, and green pepper oil chicken. Sadly they removed the intestines from the menu. It's always packed and hot inside the restaurant. Visited Ping's with some friends and ordered a few dishes to share. Everything we had was delicious, and there wasn't a single plate that we didn't enjoy. The service was quick and attentive, and the restaurant itself was nicely decorated. The best thing we ordered was the Sizzling Yellow Croaker with Fried Garlics (9/10). The fish was super crispy, and the sweet, garlicky skin was incredibly addictive. I would 100% order this every time I come back. We also had the Shredded Cabbage with Sliced Pork (8/10), which was nice and tangy. The cabbage soaked up all the sauce, making every bite packed with flavor, while the pork provided a great contrast to the vegetables. The House Special Fried Rice with Pickle & Beef (7/10) wasn't anything extraordinary, but it served as a great base alongside the other dishes. The pickles were an interesting addition, as I've never had fried rice prepared that way before, but I definitely enjoyed it. Finally, we decided to try the House Special Spicy Frog in Stone Pot (6.5/10) since most of us had never had frog before. The flavor was outstanding, with a great umami depth and just the right amount of spice. The frog itself was a little difficult to eat because of the large number of bones, but the meat was tender and juicy. Replacing the frog with another protein probably would have made it more favorable, but I still enjoyed trying something new and didn't regret ordering it. Overall, Ping's Bistro is a great spot for outstanding Chinese food. Every dish we tried was enjoyable, and there are still so many items on the menu I'd love to come back and explore. The prices are on the higher side, but the quality and flavor make up for it. I'll definitely be back. read more

Thinking back on my delicious dinner at Ping's Bistro in Fremont, two things stand out for me: the delicious food, and the heat level. We ordered a variety of dishes, and all of them were fantastic. As my friend mentioned, a little bit saucier than you'd typically find in China, but still good. And we ordered everything extra spicy. The "Premium stir-fried beef with yellow peppers (with broth, Angus beef with brisket fat)" was a great saucy start to the meal, it had a nice sour flavor to go with the mild-medium heat and was very fresh tasting. "Husband and Wife Lung Slices" was good, standard and a smidge oily, but tasty. The tendons (there are no lungs, just beef and beef tendons) were cooked nicely, with just a hint of chew but tender. Again mild-medium "Stone Pot Flavored Frog" is where things started to get really good. This was one of the best dishes of the night, and the best frog I've ever had. So tender, with a nice crispy exterior, and so much flavor. This was delicious. If you've never tried frog, this is the one to get. A nice break from the heat was "Braised Pork Belly with Preserved Mustard Greens". I was told that this was a bit leaner than what you'd expect in China, but for me the meltingly soft, rich pork belly and chewy greens made into little mantou-tacos was great. It has a nice sweet/sour flavor and zero heat. Now, by far the spiciest dish we ordered was "Double Pepper Chicken Noodles". Delicious noodles, fresh chilies, great almost crispy texture from the wok, but this was firmly in medium-hot category. Everyone started to sweat and get runny noses eating this one. But the flavor was addictive. Some notes - the parking lot is big, but you may have to walk a bit. This is because this restaurant on a Saturday night was absolutely packed. I came around 6:30 and there were 9 tables on the waitlist ahead of me. I wouldn't say it moved quickly, and the area to wait in is cramped. So best bet is to come early or go wait somewhere else. They have an online waitlist that sends a text when your table is ready, so there's no need to stick around being jostled by people entering and exiting. Service was efficient. My friend ordered (in Mandarin) so I didn't follow what was happening, but the food arrived very hot and very quickly, and they nicely pack up your leftovers themselves. Overall - fantastic. I found some new favorites, had some good versions of things I already like, and while it certainly isn't cheap it was worth it. Oddly enough they added an 18% tip automatically. Fair enough, I would normally tip 20% for dinner but if 18% works I'm not complaining. Unfortunately the location isn't convenient for me and the food would be a bit challenging for most of my friends, so I probably won't be back soon. But anyone who wants some authentic and spicy and interesting Chinese dishes would be happy coming here. read more

I really wanted to like this place but unfortunately it wasn't my favorite compared to some other places in the area. My friend and I were looking forward to the intestines but unfortunately they don't make it anymore. We diverted and ended up getting mapo tofu, pork belly, and chogqing chicken. If I were to sum up my meal in one word, I can do it easily: salty. Every dish I've tried today was incredibly salty. Though I prefer my food a little bit more flavorful, Ping's Bistro really shot every single flavor up. The Steamed pork belly with preserved vegetables was served first, and without a doubt, is one of the spiciest. It's a good size for sharing, but the preserved vegetables on the bottom was mushy and came in a very small portion. Though supposed to be a part of the dish, seemed to be thrown in just for some extra flavor. Though I selected mild spiciness for the Spicy Boiled Fish, it was still REALLY spicy. Maybe it's my spice intolerance, but this dish lights a fire in your mouth. Also, this dish is mala, so it numbs your mouth. Some people may enjoy this sensation, but it's a pass for me. The fish was really soft and tender though. The fish was my favorite part of the Spicy Boiled Fish. Not only there is fish underneath, it was surprising to see other ingredients like lotus, vermicelli noodles, and much more. The salted egg covered pork was extremely salty and oily. I was surprised to know it was boneless, and I felt like the salted egg crust is too thin, which let the taste of the pork overthrow any type of salted egg taste. The Country Style Sautéed Pork with Eggs and Black Fungus was again one of my preferred dishes, though it was extremely oily. I really liked the egg, black fungus, and bell peppers in this dish. The eggs and black fungus were soaked with flavor and the bell peppers balanced out the heaviness. The pork was also alright, but more on the tougher side. If you were to come to Ping's Bistro, I would advise you to order the Country Style Sautéed Pork with Eggs and Black Fungus. The floors were really sticky, but other than that, everything was alright. The water was poured messily, but I guess it's no big thing. The staff were really quiet and avoided interaction. When they serve your dish, they never wait an extra second before they leave for any questions or requests. They just drop the dish and zoom away. From my review, just remember: saltiness. I'm not convinced that I'll come back again, but I'm glad I tried it out. read more

My friends and I came for a late lunch around 1 PM. After ordering, all four dishes arrived extremely quickly--within about 5 to 10 minutes. We ordered the Chongqing-Style Spicy Chicken, sautéed eggplant with string beans, steamed pork belly with preserved vegetables, and the boiled spicy fish fillet with pickled cabbage. Overall, the food was delicious. Our surprise favorite was the eggplant dish. As you'll see in the photo, the spicy chicken looks buried under chili peppers, but there's actually a generous amount of chicken underneath. My family are not into spicy foods but it looks like this place serves lots of spicy food. Good thing they were able to accommodate not spicy on all our orders. So, that's a big plus with my family bcuz we have been places where they can't adjust how spicy the dish is. Love the decoration of the place, very modern feel with the murals style walls. Went in with a group and ordered a proper Hunan feast: dry pot with cabbage and dried chili (干锅), a whole grilled fish smothered in garlic and chili oil, a spicy braised pork belly hot pot, a light egg drop/veggie soup, and rice on the side, all with a house dipping sauce. Portions were generous -- plenty for the table with leftovers. Standouts were the grilled fish (crispy skin, deeply savory sauce, not overly oily) and the braised pork -- tender with a good balance of fat and lean meat, nicely spiced without being one-note. The dry pot cabbage was a great palate cleanser between the heavier dishes, and the soup rounded things out nicely. Good spot for a group dinner if you like bold, spicy, authentic Hunan flavors rather than Americanized Chinese food. Service kept things moving even with a full table of dishes. Today's order: Sliced pork in spicy garlic sauce with cucumber 10/10 Eggplant with grind peppers 10/10 Sautéed eggplant with string beans 9/10 The pork and cucumber in spicy garlic sauce is incredibly delicious! Served cold and it's surprisingly refreshing. The sauce is more like chili oil and also has bean sprouts inside soaked up in that chili oil. I loved everything about this dish. Never had cold eggplant before but wow it was really good with lots of flavor and the green chili's in there are super spicy! I've gotten several of their dishes such as the spicy beef, spicy ribs, mapo tofu, sautéed shrimp, crawfish, spicy boiled fish, and more! The service is great for a Chinese restaurant and I would put it in the same class as Western restaurants and service. The prices are a bit high and it's definitely gone up quite a bit in the past few years. But the food is so good! The restaurant is a bit small so you might have to wait for a table. This place had a long wait line on a Saturday night. After the meal, I feel that it worth the wait because the dishes that my party ordered were so good. My favorite were the lotus root soup and the steam eggs entrees. The other 5 dishes are good too. Prices are towards the expensive side, but the portion was big.
